Analysis Of Potential Application Of California Environmental Quality Act (Ceqa) Exemptions To Investor-Owned Utility Wildfire Mitigation Plans To Accelerate Fire Prevention And Mitigation Efforts, Anastasia Telesetsky, William Siembieda
WUI Fire Institute
Wildfire poses an existential threat for California. Five of the six largest wildfires in California’s history occurred in 2020 and 2021 including the first fire to ever impact over 1 million acres. Between 2014-2018, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) identified electrical power generation as igniting more fires than lightning strikes. In response to electrical utility assets igniting wildfires, the State of California has mandated that investor-owned utilities (IOU) develop Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMP) that include a spectrum of mitigation and prevention efforts including undergrounding of utilities, hardening of electrical assets (e.g., converting wooden poles to …

Prefabrication And Modular Construction: Cm 214 Residential Construction Learning Module, Matthew V. Keeth
Construction Management
The residential construction industry in the United States has certainly stuck to the conventional methods of stick-built construction nationwide. What if there was a better way? This project seeks to educate future Construction Management students about a smarter, more efficient, and sustainable method of homebuilding: Modular Construction. Distinguishing the difference between prefabrication and modularization is a necessary standard. Prefabrication is defined as the process of manufacturing the essential structural components of a home at a factory off-site. The large scale structural components of a home are then transported to the jobsite for easy installation. In addition, Modular Construction is defined …

Electrical Engineering
The Hybrid AC/DC house is a sustainable alternative to preexisting residential power systems. The implementation of a DC bus in current homes will allow inefficient DC-AC and AC-DC conversions to be circumvented. This provides a direct path for current to flow to DC loads from DC sources such as solar panels to minimize power losses. In doing so, this will give users the ability to power their homes strictly from renewable sources and substantially decrease reliance on the utility. For this purpose, the hybrid AC/DC house is also designed in such a way to be entirely grid-independent to provide power …

Low-Cost Uav Swarm For Real-Time Object Detection Applications, Joel Valdovinos Miranda
Master's Theses
With unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, becoming readily available and affordable, applications for these devices have grown immensely. One type of application is the use of drones to fly over large areas and detect desired entities. For example, a swarm of drones could detect marine creatures near the surface of the ocean and provide users the location and type of animal found. However, even with the reduction in cost of drone technology, such applications result costly due to the use of custom hardware with built-in advanced capabilities. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is to compile an …
The Efficacy Of Orange Lane Delineations In Highway Work Zones, Neetu Kaur Sidhu
The Efficacy Of Orange Lane Delineations In Highway Work Zones, Neetu Kaur Sidhu
Construction Management
With over 100,000 crashes in the work zone per year, it is essential that we as builders discover and implement innovative solutions to maximize field crew and public safety in high traffic areas. A recent trend in the Heavy Civil Construction industry has been the implementation of temporary fluorescent orange striping in active highway work zones. When traditional white or yellow lane markings are removed, a faint residue is left behind and as construction crews repeatedly shift lanes, multiple overlapping removal scars begin to create confusion for drivers that leads to an increased risk of crashes. To eliminate this confusion …

Urban Planning: Post Pandemic America, Tess Houseman
City and Regional Planning
Today’s urban planners have little to no experience dealing with pandemics as the modern focus in the field has turned away from infectious disease and public health and realigned itself with modest, long-term, encompassing health goals. Considering this, this analysis will focus on two historical case studies of past pandemics and what took place in their planning aftermath. The information garnered will then be used to hypothesize what new changes to state general plan guidelines may be warranted to mitigate the impacts of future pandemics.
