Hyperglycemia In The Critically Ill: Consequences And Treatment, Laura E. Ridge
Hyperglycemia In The Critically Ill: Consequences And Treatment, Laura E. Ridge
Food Science and Nutrition
Hyperglycemia has long been recognized as a common occurrence in the critically ill, even without a history of diabetes. During times of stress or injury, normal glucose metabolism is altered because of changes in endocrine secretions and peripheral insulin resistance, resulting in stress hyperglycemia. Although hyperglycemia is a normal part of the stress response, it has recently been recognized to be associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Furthermore, insulin therapy has been shown to decrease mortality and improve other patient outcomes. However, many questions remain unanswered concerning the efficacy of insulin therapy. It is still unclear how tight glucose control …

Design Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Chamber Prototype, Anthony M. Kendig
Design Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Chamber Prototype, Anthony M. Kendig
Master's Theses
Within the field of microbiology there is a group of bacteria termed, anaerobic, because of their aversion to oxygen. Clinical and industrial interest in these bacteria has made the use of anaerobic systems necessary for widespread testing and research. The glove-less anaerobic chamber has become the premier method for successful cultivation of anaerobic isolates. A prototype anaerobic chamber design contains new features and different anaerobic techniques formed around additional specifications given by microbiologists. Through testing and discussion of the anaerobic systems of this prototype, the design is evaluated based on its anaerobic performance. The three chamber systems that maintain the …
Prevalence And Correlates Of Vitamin D Status In African American Men, Marilyn Tseng, Veda Giri, Deborah W. Bruner, Edwards Giovannucci
Prevalence And Correlates Of Vitamin D Status In African American Men, Marilyn Tseng, Veda Giri, Deborah W. Bruner, Edwards Giovannucci
Kinesiology and Public Health
Background: Few studies have examined vitamin D insufficiency in African American men although they are at very high risk. We examined the prevalence and correlates of vitamin D insufficiency among African American men in Philadelphia. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional analysis were 194 African American men in the Philadelphia region who were enrolled in a risk assessment program for prostate cancer from 10/ 96–10/07. All participants completed diet and health history questionnaires and provided plasma samples, which were assessed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. We used linear regression models to examine associations with 25(OH)D concentrations and logistic regression to estimate …
Designing A Microbial Prolyl Peptidase Delivery System For The Treatment Of Celiac Disease, Matthew J. Shurtleff
Designing A Microbial Prolyl Peptidase Delivery System For The Treatment Of Celiac Disease, Matthew J. Shurtleff
Master's Theses
Celiac disease is an autoimmune enteropathy resulting from the ingestion of gluten and gluten-like proteins from wheat, barley and rye in afflicted individuals. Indigestible gluten-derived peptides rich in proline residues are known to be responsible for eliciting the inappropriate immune response characteristic of the disease. In this investigation, surface level expression of prolyl peptidase activity by genetically engineered probiotic lactobacilli was postulated to be a possible treatment for this disease. Plasmid-based reporter vectors were constructed utilizing a novel, homology-based cloning technique to assess the expression and localization signals from the S-layer protein gene of Lactobacillus acidophilus. These plasmids were mutated …

Effect Of Starter Cultures On Lactobacillus Acidophilus Survival And Gene Expression In Yogurt, Elizabeth W. Ng
Effect Of Starter Cultures On Lactobacillus Acidophilus Survival And Gene Expression In Yogurt, Elizabeth W. Ng
Master's Theses
Probiotics, especially Lactobacillus acidophilus, strains have increasingly been incorporated into food products as dietary adjuncts due to their purported health benefits. Dairy products, especially yogurt, are frequently used as probiotic delivery systems. To realize therapeutic effects, it is important to consume a high amount of probiotics. However, maintaining a sufficient amount of viable probiotics in yogurt throughout the shelf life has been a challenge as starter cultures have shown to possess some deleterious effects on probiotic survival. The main objective of this thesis project was to determine the extent of antagonistic effects imposed by yogurt starter cultures (Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. …
Development Of A Laboratory Protocol For The Micropropagation Of Monterey Pines (Pinus Radiata), Año Nuevo Stand, Karen E. Wells
Development Of A Laboratory Protocol For The Micropropagation Of Monterey Pines (Pinus Radiata), Año Nuevo Stand, Karen E. Wells
Master's Theses
Monterey pine (Pinus radiata), a native tree to California and two Mexican islands, is important both ecologically and economically. Outside native stands, Monterey pines are grown for landscaping in California and on plantations around the world. Pitch canker, a disease caused by the fungus Gibberella circinata Nirenberg & O’Donnell (Fusarium circinatum Nirenberg and O'Donnell) is threatening the survival of Monterey pines. The disease currently affects Monterey pines in many parts of the world including the native stands. No effective chemical or biological control is available but some Monterey pines show resistance to the disease. The purpose of this project was …
