This study explores the relationship between loneliness and approaches to social media in relation to college students at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Understanding why and how individuals engage with social networks can provide avenues into which they can establish online habits that are beneficial to their overall wellbeing. Qualitative data was gathered from interviews with two members of faculty and staff as well as four students, their responses recorded and interpreted as an essay film. Respondents expressed the need for awareness and mindfulness when approaching social media by periodically assessing their own activities and feelings while …

Mitigation Of Corrosion Under Insulation (Cui) Of Carbon Steel Of Different Insulating Materials: A Literature Review And Testing Analysis, Michael Alexander Lowes Jun 2017

Mitigation Of Corrosion Under Insulation (Cui) Of Carbon Steel Of Different Insulating Materials: A Literature Review And Testing Analysis, Michael Alexander Lowes

Materials Engineering

Equipment often found in refineries may be enveloped in insulation and weathering jackets to maintain internal processing temperatures. In many cases moisture from the environment will penetrate the weathering jacket and infiltrate the insulation, leaching corrosive ions to the surface of metal equipment, effectively creating a corrosion cell. The goal of this project is to investigate different insulating materials for their ability to inhibit corrosion under insulation (CUI). The inhibiting mechanism utilizes water ingress that leaches ions from the insulator to bond with the surface metal and create a passive layer, inhibiting any further corrosion. This study will follow ASTM …

Design Of A Process To Implement An Annual Community Fundraiser For Sprout Up, Katherine Lynette Phillips, Kimberly Nicole Walter Jun 2017

Design Of A Process To Implement An Annual Community Fundraiser For Sprout Up, Katherine Lynette Phillips, Kimberly Nicole Walter

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Sprout Up—in San Luis Obispo—is currently a non-profit organization that teaches free environmental science education to first and second graders around the San Luis Obispo area. Due to recent circumstances, Sprout Up will soon be losing its non-profit status, and therefore they will be losing their funding as well. Their problem is that they need a stable annual fundraiser that will help the organization continue to provide free services to local elementary schools as a Cal Poly club rather than a non-profit. Multi-criteria analysis techniques were used to determine what would be the best solution to their problem and found …

Addressing The Existence Of Overcrowding In The Cal Poly Rec Center Exercise Rooms, Josue Alvarez, Robert Hemphill

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Cal Poly’s Rec Center is a facility that has been extremely popular among students ever since its initial creation many decades ago. Despite its popularity being a positive quality in most ways, it does ultimately yield a certain issue for the users of the facility; the issue of overcrowding. This senior project aimed to analyze the problem of overcrowding at the Rec Center and improve upon its most critical areas of impact. Ultimately, we identified the Rec Center’s exercise rooms as the most impacted area, with the issue of equipment unavailability being the largest factor. Thus, we designed alternative equipment …

The lesson plan focused on the three sub-disciplines of soil science; physical, chemical, and biological. Activities were created to correspond to the three sub-disciplines. Alternate activities were created to allow …

Contactless Charging Adapter, Kevin Nguyen, Emmett Stetz, Joseph Pacheco May 2017

Contactless Charging Adapter, Kevin Nguyen, Emmett Stetz, Joseph Pacheco

Electrical Engineering

Currently, most cell phones utilize wired adapters to charge, which cause a minor hassle when one frequently needs to unplug and replug their device whenever they pick it up to use while it is charging. The charging adapter is a pad that phones can be placed on to wirelessly charge the device. The charging adapter consists of two components: the wireless charging platform to supply and transmit the power, and the wireless charging receiver for phones that do not already have an internal receiver included, specifically targeting newer generation iPhones that utilize a lightning port (i.e. iPhone 5, 6, 6s, …

The Morro Bay Fauna: Evidence For A Medieval Droughts Refugium On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Deborah A. Jones, Kacey Hadick, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Judith F. Porcasi, William R. Hildebrandt Apr 2017

The Morro Bay Fauna: Evidence For A Medieval Droughts Refugium On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Deborah A. Jones, Kacey Hadick, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Judith F. Porcasi, William R. Hildebrandt

Social Sciences

A robust collection of mammal, bird, fish, and shellfish remains from an 8,000-year residential sequence at Morro Bay, a small, isolated estuary on the central California coast, shows a strong focus on marine species during the Middle-Late Transition cultural phase (950–700 cal B.P.), which largely coincides with the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA). Previous studies have provided modest evidence for increased fishing and rabbit hunting during the MCA in adjacent regions, but the Morro Bay findings suggest a distinctive marine-focused subsistence refugium during the period of drought. Specifically, the sequence shows striking all-time peaks in marine and estuarine birds, fish NISP/m3, …

Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell Apr 2017

Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell

Master's Theses

With the prevalence of computing, many workers today are confined to desk within an office. By sitting in these positions for long periods of time, workers are prone to develop one of many musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to prevent MSDs in the long term, workers must employ good sitting habits. One promising method to ensure good workplace posture is through camera monitoring. To date, camera systems have been used in determining posture in a clean environment. However, an occluded and cluttered background, which is typical in an office setting, imposes a great challenge for …

Got Culture? The Lack Of Diversity On Cal Poly’S Campus And The Attempts To Raise Cultural Awareness, Alice Jang Mar 2017

Got Culture? The Lack Of Diversity On Cal Poly’S Campus And The Attempts To Raise Cultural Awareness, Alice Jang

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In this paper, I will argue that the community of minorities at Cal Poly has been the driving factor in recruiting diverse students to the university. Despite lack of encouragement and assistance from the school, various ethnic student organizations have independently hosted events and programs to spread culture onto a predominantly white campus. After analyzing various cultural organizations and their activities on campus, Cal Poly’s cultural clubs have clearly made a bigger impact on the lives of minorities than the university administrators have. This paper will focus on Asian-American organizations because they make up the majority of the ethnic student …

Cal Poly Football: A Cornerstone Of Student Achievement, Michael Langberg

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The paper examines the history of the Cal Poly athletics program and how Cal Poly fits into the institution of modern college football. This paper explains how the athletic programs at Cal Poly increase student morale and explores some of the reasons why college football is held in such high esteem by both students and fans alike. To gauge student response, I look at past student publications such as The Polygram and Mustang Daily, focussing on their reaction to athletics.

Digging Deeper: Uncovering The Aftermath Of Kristin Smart’S Disappearance, Kailyn Pope Mar 2017

Digging Deeper: Uncovering The Aftermath Of Kristin Smart’S Disappearance, Kailyn Pope

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will discuss two major components of past crimes at Cal Poly: the attentive student response to Kristin Smart’s 1996 disappearance in light of possible shortcomings of authorities, and how events such as these have shaped campus safety policies and regulations since the 1990s. Kristin Smart’s disappearance, as well as other criminal acts against students in the 1990s and beyond, brought the Cal Poly student community together in solidarity year after year with programs such as Take Back the Night. Even though the red handprints, indicators of areas in which someone had been sexually assaulted, have been removed from …

The Minds Of The Dissidents: Cal Poly Student Unrest During Robert E. Kennedy’S Presidency 1967-1979, Brigette Sadowski Mar 2017

The Minds Of The Dissidents: Cal Poly Student Unrest During Robert E. Kennedy’S Presidency 1967-1979, Brigette Sadowski

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

During Robert E. Kennedy’s presidency at Cal Poly from 1967 to 1979, Cal Poly experienced many protests on several different topics, but all ended peacefully, without incident. I argue this is largely because of the peaceful mindset of the student body, faculty, and administration to keep the peace, making Cal Poly a more conservative campus compared to other California Universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University. For students, such as those involved in SNAP, violence was not a means to an end and one of their key goals was to educate rather than yell …

An Educational Video: Cal Poly Dairy Calf Management Procedures, Katie Nicole Vierra, Anthony Joseph Ferdinandi Mar 2017

An Educational Video: Cal Poly Dairy Calf Management Procedures, Katie Nicole Vierra, Anthony Joseph Ferdinandi

Agricultural Education and Communication

In particular, dairy production in California is ranked one of the top five states in the United States that produces approximately 40 billion pounds of milk per year. California’s dairy industry is not only the largest milk producer in the nation, but it is also the most financially prominent in the agricultural industry. This industry lead is merely because of its careful management practices. The way calves are raised depend on the resources used, the natural environment present, and the operation of the dairy farm. Essentially, there are numerous ways to care for a cow and calf. However, the aim …

Produce Meets Pinterest, Lauren E. Tomasello

Agricultural Education and Communication

The purpose of this project was to examine Tanimura & Antle’s (T&A) Pinterest analytics. The author will determine if using the site was beneficial for T&A’s marketing plan. T&A has a strong influence in social media marketing and has added Pinterest to the list of platforms they utilize in 2015. Analytics are useful in gauging the effectiveness of content, so analyzing T&A’s Pinterest use will provide measurable marketing tools.

The number of followers is important, but does not indicate the overall success. Therefore various metrics were measured to see who T&A’s audience was and what they were like. The findings …
