Creating The Foundation For A Startup: Design And Implementation Of A Database System For An Electrical Bicycle Rental Company, Alejandro Martinez

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

BoltAbout was started by 4 Cal Poly students, and their COO is a fellow Industrial Engineering student that I met during the first half of the senior project series class. He presented the project to me and I decided to work with him in developing this new database for his startup company. BoltAbout’s customer base is growing and current operations are not fit to meet the demand of a growing company. More specifically, their data management system can’t be used by all current employees to perform essential tasks such as rental processing, bicycle and equipment organization, and customer data analysis. …

The Civil Rights Movement At Cal Poly Compared To Other Universities Across The Nation, Brett Barcellos Mar 2017

The Civil Rights Movement At Cal Poly Compared To Other Universities Across The Nation, Brett Barcellos

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

At Cal Poly, demonstrations for the civil rights movement were not very common but when they were, they made headlines. The war in Vietnam far overshadowed the civil rights movement at Cal Poly due simply to its demographics at the time. The population at Cal Poly, as well as the surrounding areas, was lacking diversity, making the civil rights movement less of a priority for many. Perhaps if the civil rights movement was taken more seriously during its time of relevance, more African Americans would have became inclined to attend Cal Poly and get involved in what was happening. However, …

Blaming The Victims: The Telegram-Tribune And Mustang News’S Coverage Of The Disappearance Of Kristin Smart And The Murders Of Rachel Newhouse And Aundria Crawford, Jacquelyn Morris

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The cases of Rachel Newhouse, Aundria Crawford, and Kristen Smart are vital in evaluating how the San Luis Obispo media—specifically, the San Luis Obispo County Telegram-Tribune and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo school newspaper, Mustang News—have treated cases of violence against women in the past. On a larger scale, looking at the cases of these three women will reveal how missing female college students were treated by the media in the 1990s and if this treatment has changed in recent years. In the cases of Kristin Smart and Aundria Crawford, the Telegram-Tribune followed the predominant trend of media outlets by …

How Cal Poly Athletics Maintained Success On The Chopping Block, Jenna Noce

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In April of 1990, Cal Poly’s President Warren J. Baker and a handful of administrators decided that due to the athletics program’s $95,000 deficit during the 1988-89 fiscal year, a task force would be put together to help determine the future of sports at Cal Poly by a November 1990 deadline. President Baker would ultimately make the final decision when it came to the future of athletics, but he wanted input from members of the Cal Poly community. The task force was comprised of Mustang Booster members, executive directors of organizations such as the Cal Poly Foundation and university relations, …

A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez Mar 2017

A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper examines Cal Poly’s response to the 1973 Rehabilitation Act in the decade that followed. Cal Poly’s response, while passionate, was still mediocre as compared with other campuses within the California State University system. Cal Poly’s efforts to create an accessible campus fall comfortably into the timeline implied by federal legislation and national trends, although the fact that 11 other California State Universities established organizations to provide services for disabled students shows that Cal Poly was far from a leader among its peers. This is not to say that Cal Poly’s response to the issue to disabled students was …

Sexy Robots: A Perpetuation Of Patriarchy, Ashlyn Des Roches Mar 2017

Sexy Robots: A Perpetuation Of Patriarchy, Ashlyn Des Roches

Communication Studies

This feminist critique looks into the way that gender, specifically females, are portrayed in some of Hollywood's top films involving Artificial Intelligence: Blade Runner, Her, and Ex Machina. These movies work as a perpetuation of patriarchal ideologies while maintaining the objectification and hypersexuality of women as normalized behaviors. Additionally, while some forms of empowerment are conveyed, the features illustrate women merely on a spectrum of extreme behavior; due to Heuristics and Cultivation Theory, these misrepresentations can be associated with women outside the surrealist realm of the depicted artificially intelligent worlds.

Aortic aneurysms are the 14th leading cause of death in the United States. Annually, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ruptures are responsible for 4500 deaths. There are another 45,000 repair procedures performed to prevent rupture, and of these approximately 1400 lead to deaths. With proper detection, the aneurysm may be treated using endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Understanding how the flow of the blood within the artery is affected by the aneurysm is important in determining the growth of the aneurysm, as well as how to properly treat the aneurysm. The goal of this project was to develop a physical construct …

These interviews were used to further the information already available in the literature, while also attempting to fill in the research question gaps.

After the data was …

A Rhetorical Criticism Of Waiting For Superman, Jordan L. Baxter Mar 2017

A Rhetorical Criticism Of Waiting For Superman, Jordan L. Baxter

Communication Studies

This project analyzes the documentary Waiting for Superman in order to better understand the rhetoric surrounding public education in America. I perform a close textual analysis of the documentary and explore the rhetorical strategies the film uses to persuade its audience. Through my analysis I argue that Waiting for Superman employs rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos to successfully characterize the public school system as a failing institution. This failure is largely blamed on teachers unions who are vilified throughout the film and shown to be preventing progressive reforms from passing. Lastly, through the use of identification Waiting for …

Transitioning College Media From Print Focused Business Models To Digitally Focused Business Models, Celina Oseguera

Journalism

The noticeable downturn in print advertising indicates a need for change in the news industry business model. College media is not immune to this decline and need for change. A change in business model calls for transitioning to an alternative system that does not primarily rely on print products and advertising — a digitally focused business model. Many college media organizations around the United States have started to pursue this type of model, changing the way they produce and present news in the process. Taking into account the state of print focused business models in the general and collegiate news …

Investigation Into Feasibility Of Off-Grid Small Dwelling In Slo County, Sam Labberton

Construction Management

The trend towards green, sustainable living has grown more and more in the housing industry each year since before the turn of the century; solar in the last decade alone has grown by 60% (http://www.seia.org/research-resources/solar-industry-data). Living on a grid that runs on unclean sources of energy already has led us into an environmental disaster some call irreversible. This paper takes a detailed look into the feasibility of a small, off-grid, dwelling that utilizes modern technology in order to live more modestly. In conjunction with great advancements in solar technology along with energy storage such as deep cycle lead-acid batteries, on-site …

We Are All Noah: Tom Regan's Olive Branch To Religious Animal Ethics, Matthew C. Halteman Feb 2017

We Are All Noah: Tom Regan's Olive Branch To Religious Animal Ethics, Matthew C. Halteman

Between the Species

For the past thirty years, Tom Regan has bucked the trend among secular animal rights philosophers and spoken patiently and persistently to the best angels of religious ethics in a stream of publications that enjoins religious scholars, clergy, and lay people alike to rediscover the resources within their traditions for articulating and living out an animal ethics that is more consistent with their professed values of love, mercy, and justice. My aim in this article is to showcase some of the wealth of insight offered in this important but under-utilized archive of Regan’s work to those of us, religious or …
