Trace elements in 15 walleye (Sander vitreus) tissues taken from the Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado corresponded to many metals of worldwide concern and were the same as those released into the Arkansas River from decades of mining at Leadville, Colorado. Therefore, analyses of walleye stomach contents, gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum; a dietary prey item for walleye), and tissues of walleye were compared for an increase in, or a deficiency of, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb. Tissues were compared as couplets but also evaluated with tissues clustered into 6 functional groups. The trace elements were found …

Surface erosion sediment transport from upland areas (UA) to riverine floodplain (RF) at Gilgel-Gibe catchment scale (GGCs), Ethiopia was affecting future water-food security. This study aimed to simulate the effect of streamflow surface erosion/sediment transport from UA to RF on water management at GGCs, Ethiopia using SWAT+ integration with RUSLE. The integration of RUSLE with GIS RS was used to simulate surface erosion from UA to RF, while QSWAT+ has been used to simulate the effect of streamflow sediment transport to help identify the priority area for water conservation planning. Sensitivity analysis, calibration, validation were performed using SWAT+Toolbox hydrological model …
Transforming Swat As A Tool For Fast And Economic Flood Risk Mapping In Large Basins, Adnan Rajib, Krutikkumar Patel
Transforming Swat As A Tool For Fast And Economic Flood Risk Mapping In Large Basins, Adnan Rajib, Krutikkumar Patel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There are numerous model coupling frameworks that integrate hydrodynamic and hydrologic models to produce flood inundation maps; however, most of them come with high computational complexities and costs. Recent advancements in hydrogeomorphic, topography-based inundation mapping approaches can provide parsimonious ways of addressing these computational challenges and therefore are suited for scenarios requiring rapid decision making and situational assessment. Despite such opportunities, research to coupling these topography-based approaches with a hydrologic model to instantaneously generate streamflow and the corresponding flood inundation extents across large river networks is still in infancy. In this work, we attempted to fill this gap by coupling …

E-Pra: Participatory Rural Appraisal Using Satellite Imagery On A Flexi Sheet [Online], Nishant Kumar, Pavan Matham, Shravya False, Peter False
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Efficiency of rural infrastructure projects in developing countries is suboptimal. This can be improved through participation of rural communities at every stage of the program i.e. planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Though participation is required at every stage, it is most important at the planning stage. To ensure this, a participatory method known as participatory rural appraisal (PRA) is most often used. A key step is to map and plan resources utilization using as medium either ground, paper, or GIS. However, most often, it only follows the ‘inform’ step in the participatory ladder. In the present paper, an innovative PRA …

Assessing The Groundwater Vulnerability To Nitrates And Pesticides Within The Geospatial Decision Support System Landsupport, Marialaura Bancheri, Alessia Perego, Giuliano Langella, Daniele Lezzi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This work presents how to assess the groundwater vulnerability to both pesticides and nitrate within the geospatial Decision Support system (s-DSS) of LandSupport, though two new web-based, freely-available dynamical tools, named the pesticide fate tool and nitrate fate tool. The pesticide fate tool is based on the extended transfer function model (TFM-ext), specifically expanded to consider the transport of reactive solutes, i.e., pesticides. The nitrate fate tool is based on the coupling of the ARMOSA model, used to simulate the crop growth dynamics and the consequent nitrate leaching within the most biological active zone (i.e. the rooting depth of the …

The H2020 project COASTAL develops evidence-based policy recommendations supporting sustainable development at the land-sea interface. Key to this process is a powerful approach that combines stakeholder engagement, scenario analysis and System Dynamics (SD) modelling, which was tested in six coastal areas. One of these areas is the Oudlandpolder, a region between the Belgian coastal cities Oostende and Zeebrugge and the more inland situated city of Brugge, where a Framework Agreement has been signed recently to enable more differentiated and climate-proof water management in the region. The implementation of this agreement takes place through, amongst others, a land development project investigating …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Thanks to the advancement of technologies of the last century, today it is possible to talk about Digital Twin models (DT). They want to accurately reproduce through high-fidelity computer models the state of evolution of a generic physical entity. The aim of DT is understanding, simulating systems behaviors, and evaluating them under changing boundary and initial conditions. This contribution illustrates the digital twin model of GEOframe Soil Plant Atmosphere Continuum Estimator (GEOSPACE). It is the ecohydrological model of the GEOframe system and it aims to simulate the soil-plant-atmosphere interactions to study and analyze the complex processes that occur in the …

Risk Modeling Of Pathogens In Captured Rainwater: Application Of Qmra To Human Exposure From On-Site, Non-Potable, Fit-For-Purpose Reuse, John M. Johnston, David Demaree, Santosh Ghimire, Michael Jahne
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Rainwater collected on suburban and municipal properties from rooftops and stored in barrels and cisterns is a potential, alternative source of water for non-potable uses such as vehicle and equipment washing, in addition to potable use with an appropriate level of treatment. As good stewards of public resources, homeowner and municipal use of rainwater benefits cities by decreasing stormwater flow from the property to sewers and also decreases reliance on city drinking water. But is roof-collected rainwater safe to use, and what standards exist to evaluate human health risk? Because the water isn’t normally being ingested, protozoa and bacterial pathogens …

The Gaza Strip - Palestine, like any other section of the Mediterranean, has a distinct and substantial water shortage; nevertheless, the problem in this area is more obvious and serious, and it is linked to water quantity and quality. The Gaza Strip's only source of water is groundwater, and agriculture consumes more than 70% of all groundwater extracted. New work has begun to develop sustainable technical and economical solutions to cope with the non-sufficient existing wastewater treatment plant effluents' quality for reuse. The paper evaluated the organic matter and suspended solids removal efficacy of Slow Sand Filter (SSF) designed to …

Transboundary waters are vital to the sustainability and survival of human communities on the U.S.-Mexico border region, a nearly 2,000 mile-long arid zone in North America currently affected by climate uncertainties. We focus on the Rio Grande–Hueco Bolson (RG-HB; also known as Rio Bravo–Valle de Juarez in Mexico) water system, which is essential for the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez region. Water management in the region is characterized by limited and dwindling water supplies, increasing demands for water from multiple sectors, and a segmented governance system spanning two U.S. states and two countries. The region faces several drivers of change, including climate …
Personality-Dependent Responses Of Elk To Predatory Pursuits, Rob Found
Personality-Dependent Responses Of Elk To Predatory Pursuits, Rob Found
Western North American Naturalist
Personality in wildlife has been linked to several ecological processes including mortality risk, facultative migration, and behavioral plasticity. In this paper I examined the relationship between personality and antipredator tactics exhibited by 20 wild female elk (Cervus canadensis) in Jasper National Park, Alberta. Two observers conducted 106 separate chases designed explicitly to resemble predator pursuits by wolves, the main predator of elk. We quantified and classified elk tactical responses during each chase. Elk with “shy” type personalities responded to 84% of predator-resembling pursuits by employing speed-based tactics to outrun pursuers or rejoin conspecifics. Elk with “bold” type personalities …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The study of the impact of human activities on a non-humanly modified landscape is confronted with an essential need to define the initial state before farmers arrived. Particularly, vegetation cover (biomass but also vegetation type distribution) is hard to reconstitute once we postulate there is no such thing as climatic vegetation. Here we present the first steps of a reconstitution of a self-evolving vegetation cover of the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales (also, Roussillon) - an area cultivated since the 5th millennium B.C. To simulate the vegetation state at the neolithic period, we first classify the 94 tree and bush species …
Cooperative Adaptive Climate Policies: An Application Of The Emodps Algorithm To Deal With Multiple Objectives And Deep Uncertainty In The Rice50+ Integrated Assessment Model, Angelo Carlino, Paolo Gazzotti, Massimo Tavoni, Andrea Castelletti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Integrated assessment models have been always heavily criticized for their simplified treatment of uncertainty. Indeed, future climate impacts, the capability of countries to adapt, and many other assumptions on the socio-economic and climatic system remain hardly quantifiable and largely unknown, strongly affecting the suggested course of actions, especially under the traditional perfect foresight assumption. In this work, we extend the EMODPS algorithm to implement self-adaptive and multiobjective climate policies in RICE50+, a cost-benefit IAM that accounts for 57 autonomous regions. The obtained policies coordinate agents’ behavior in a cooperative setting under deep uncertainties in the socio-economic and climate components of …

The provision of reliable, safe, affordable and continuously supplied drinking water is essential in the development of cities. To ensure sustainability, efficient use of water resources, and health assessment of such critical infrastructures as water distribution networks (WDNs), the improvement of monitoring/verification systems with the collection of reliable data at a reasonable cost is an impending priority. This paper seeks to facilitate the health assessment of WDNs assets, using the ground penetrating radar (GPR) as a reliable and powerful non-destructive method for capturing information (radargrams) from the subsoil, and through improved interpretation of those images. This paper uses a multi-agent-based …
Variables Selection For Improving Clustering Multiview Processes, Xavier Angerri, Karina Gibert
Variables Selection For Improving Clustering Multiview Processes, Xavier Angerri, Karina Gibert
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In December 2020 the INSESS-COVID19 report was presented, as a result of a project to support data-driven policy-making in the COVID19 crisis in Catalonia. Reporting territorial results, focusing the prototyping situations of the Basic Areas Social Services (BASS) in terms of the kinds of impact of COVID19 confinement on social vulnerability was necessary. Nevertheless, groups with several BASS of similar profile was searched. Individual reports at BASS level were precluded, as multivariate analysis of relationships raise the risk of violating statistical secrecy, thus putting at risk the anonymity of the participants as well as their safety when vulnerable populations are …
Modelling Urban Growth And Future Urban Climate In Indian Cities With Local Climate Zones As Land Uses, Tomas Crols, Jente Broeckx, Inge Uljee, Shu Yang
Modelling Urban Growth And Future Urban Climate In Indian Cities With Local Climate Zones As Land Uses, Tomas Crols, Jente Broeckx, Inge Uljee, Shu Yang
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The urban heat island effect leads to higher temperatures in cities compared to rural areas. The combined effect of climate change and strong urban growth will as such have a massive impact on human health in growing large cities, especially in tropical or humid regions. Climate models usually do not take urban growth into account or do not have detailed data on the specific characteristics of the urban area. Most land-use change simulations are driven by functional land uses (e.g. residential land, commercial land, agriculture), while an urban climate model rather needs more information on climate-relevant surface properties such as …

Identifying Leverage Points To Enhance Climate Resilience In Coastal Social-Ecological Systems, Lena Rölfer, María Máñez Costa, Louis Celliers, Sergio Rosendo
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Enhancing the resilience of complex coastal social-ecological systems (SES) to climate change requires transformative changes. Yet, there are knowledge gaps on how best to achieve transformation. In this presentation, we propose a conceptual framework for assessing governance performance in SESs and identifying leverage points - where a small shift may lead to transformative changes in the system as a whole - for improving governance performance to enhance climate resilience. The conceptual framework combines three different methods: measurement of different forms of capitals (capitals approach), Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) and a leverage points analysis. Governance processes contributing to different forms of …
Designing A Knowledge System For Managing Deep Uncertainty?, Joseph Guillaume
Designing A Knowledge System For Managing Deep Uncertainty?, Joseph Guillaume
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Much of the literature on decision making under deep uncertainty has its roots in decision aiding and systems analysis, and therefore focuses on planning. Work on adaptive planning, resilience, and signposts and triggers, however, begins to cross into the realm of implementation, encountering issues with organisational and institutional change. Implementation relies on a supporting knowledge system that ensures that knowledge is available when a decision needs to be made, and knowledge is updated over time. This presentation explores what such a knowledge system might look like, centred around a knowledge base that acts as a boundary object facilitating conversations about …

Integrated Participatory Scenario Modelling Of Air Quality And Emissions In Urban Areas. Recent Research From Madrid, Spain, Richard Hewitt, Juan Balea Aneiros, Charlotte Astier, Eduardo Caramés
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Global cities are attempting to address problems of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from motorised transport through strategies that seek to reduce vehicle circulation and promote sustainable mobility. However, to put such strategies into practice without compromising citizens’ wellbeing, negatively impacting businesses, or generating unintended environmental consequences is a major challenge. Trade-offs and complementarities between transport, energy and land-use need to be considered in an integrated way, and buy-in must be sought from a wide range of stakeholders. Poorly designed policies can lead to rejection from citizens or parts of the political spectrum. To address these aspects together, new …
Improving Water Distribution Network Data Extraction From Rawgpr Images With Multi-Agent Techniques And Machine Learning, Gemma Stanton, David Ayala-Cabrera
Improving Water Distribution Network Data Extraction From Rawgpr Images With Multi-Agent Techniques And Machine Learning, Gemma Stanton, David Ayala-Cabrera
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Concerns around climate change, disaster resilience, and digitization underscore the importance of reliable and affordable information about critical infrastructure such as water distribution networks (WDNs) in order to prevent/mitigate potential negative effects. For instance, lack of data from WDNs enables problems such as leaks to persist undetected. While manual and destructive detection methods exist to monitor the health of WDNs (e.g., impact echo, laser scan, among others), these methods lack the power to provide comprehensive data for continuous modelling, operation, assessment, and maintenance. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) offers one non-destructive testing method that is inexpensive and easily operable; however, the …
Finding Diverse Future Scenarios For Complex Systems, Patrick Steinmann, Judith Verstegen, George Van Voorn, Arend Ligtenberg
Finding Diverse Future Scenarios For Complex Systems, Patrick Steinmann, Judith Verstegen, George Van Voorn, Arend Ligtenberg
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Complex systems such as cities, energy grids, or the global climate have many possible futures. Narratives of decision-relevant futures (scenarios) are a common tool for making the complexity and uncertainties of complex systems humanly interpretable. They can present contrasting plausible futures, summarize alternative pathways, and serve as foils for evaluating policy options. However, the effectiveness of the policy evaluation depends in part on selecting a set of scenarios that captures the full diversity of the system’s plausible future developments. Here we show an optimization-based approach for generating scenarios that are specifically designed to be diverse, plausible, and comprehensive. We establish …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is dramatically transforming our lives and the environment. The Urban Water Cycle (UWC) management is a key part of this transformation, which encompasses the development and application of new elements of automation and monitoring as well as the use of AI’s and data mining as knowledge management tools. The research analysing the so-called “digital water” tends to perceive AI in water as overwhelmingly positive. An embryonic literature unpacks the more problematic aspects of AI in water; however, it remains overly superficial with respect to the broader socio-political implications of this transformation. The paper performs a critical overview …

Integrated Modelling Of Landscape Suitability For Carbon Offsetting From New Forest Planting. Case Of Scotland, Uk, Andrea Baggio-Compagnucci, Paola Ovando, Richard J. Hewitt, Roberto Canullo
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is considerable interest worldwide in offsetting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through new forest planting. Yet existing policy is poorly informed by inadequate data, with landscapes assumed to be spatially homogenous, and little consideration given to different yields (and hence carbon captured) across tree species. Few studies examine the effect of the changing climate on the evolution of projected planting schemes, and differences between mechanised and less-mechanised planting approaches are rarely considered. In this contribution we present an integrated modelling approach that aims to address these shortcomings for the case of Scotland, UK. We model spatial variability in landscape suitability …

Improved Understanding Of The Relationship Between Modelcomplexity And Calibration Performance Using Exploratorylandscape Analysis Metrics, Siwei Zhu, Holger R. Maier, Aaron Zecchin
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
It is well-known that model complexity has an impact on the features of error surfaces of environmental models, which has impact on model calibration performance. For example, increasing model complexity results in an increase in the number of local optima of error surfaces, making it more difficult to identify globally optimal solutions. However, previous attempts at identifying these relationships have been ad-hoc, generally relying on graphical, lower-dimensional representations of higher-dimensional surfaces to identify relevant features in the error surface. This makes it difficult to determine the relationship between model complexity and model calibration performance in an objective fashion. In this …

A Survey Of Wildfire Spread Prediction And Risk Estimation Methodswith Machine Learning Techniques, Sergiu Dascalu, Rui Wu, Andrew Munoz, Shanyue Guan
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Wildfires can be very dangerous and destructive. In 2021, states in the USA particularly affected by deadly and damaging wildfires include California, Oregon, Montana, Washington, and Arizona (statista.com, 2021). Worldwide, countries recently affected significantly by devastating wildfires include, but are not limited to, Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Greece, India, Spain, South Korea, and Turkey. Thus, two important research questions are “how to predict fire spread behaviours?” and “how to evaluate wildfire risks?”. To answer these questions, in this paper we conducted a survey of recent methods and approaches that are based on machine learning techniques. For the first research question, …
