Student Retention And Persistence In University Certificate-First Programs, Troy Martin, Randall Davies
Faculty Publications
While access to higher education has grown over the past few years, significant barriers exist for nontraditional students attempting to prepare for and complete postsecondary education. For these students, the traditional methods for acknowledging student achievement do not always work. This research explored the impact of earning professional certificates on nontraditional students’ confidence, motivation, and persistence. Specifically, this study evaluated the matriculation rates between two cohorts of students who participated in the online PathwayConnect program. The mixed-method study found that matriculation rates for students who were encouraged to earn a certificate increased compared to those who followed a traditional path. …
In-Situ Chlorine Gas Generation For Chlorination And Purification Of Rare Earth And Actinide Metals, Mark H. Schvaneveldt
In-Situ Chlorine Gas Generation For Chlorination And Purification Of Rare Earth And Actinide Metals, Mark H. Schvaneveldt
Theses and Dissertations
Rare earth and actinide metals, critical to security, medicine, and the economy, have been processed through methods such as solvent extraction and electrorefining. To minimize radiological waste and improve yield, a 'chloride volatility' process--also known as the chlorination and volatilization process (CVP)--has been proposed and demonstrated for processing rare earths. The process takes advantage of the low vapor pressure of rare earth chlorides (<700 >°C), CaCl2 was added to LaCl3 to lower the melting temperature. LaCl3 electrochemical behavior has not previously been studied in CaCl2. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were applied to LaCl3 salts in CaCl2-LiCl …700>
On Continuity Of Multiplication In The Fundamental Group, Eric Steadman
On Continuity Of Multiplication In The Fundamental Group, Eric Steadman
Theses and Dissertations
For a topological space X, the fundamental group can be topologized as a quotient of the path space with the compact-open topology. For one-dimensional or planar Peano continua, the fundamental group with this topology is a topological group if and only if it is semilocally simply connected. In particular, we demonstrate that the group operation is not continuous in this setting.

Fabrication And Characterization Of Dna Templated Electronic Nanomaterials And Their Directed Placement By Self-Assembly Of Block Copolymers, Dulashani Ruwanthika Ranasinghe Weerakkodige
Theses and Dissertations
Bottom-up self-assembly has the potential to fabricate nanostructures with advanced electrical features. DNA templates have been used to enable such self-assembling methods due to their versatility and compatibility with various nanomaterials. This dissertation describes research to advance several different steps of biotemplated nanofabrication, from DNA assembly to characterization. I assembled different nanomaterials including surfactant-coated Au nanorods, DNA-linked Au nanorods and Pd nanoparticles on DNA nanotubes ~10 micrometer long, and on ~400 nm long bar-shaped DNA origami templates. I optimized seeding by changing the surfactant and magnesium ion concentrations in the seeding solution. After successful seeding, I performed electroless plating on …

This work presents a process to determine the preliminary optimal configuration of a concentrating solar power-coal hybrid power plant with low solar augmentation, and is demonstrated on a regenerative steam Rankine cycle coal power plant in Castle Dale, UT, USA (average DNI of 542 W m−2). A representative plant model is developed and validated against published data for a coal power plant. The simplifications that lead to the representative model from a coal power plant model include combining multiple feedwater heaters, combining turbines, and using a mass-average calculation for extraction steam properties. Comparing net power generation and boiler …
Isogeometric Reconstruction And Crash Analysis Of A 1996 Body-In-White Dodge Neon, Kendrick M. Shepherd
Isogeometric Reconstruction And Crash Analysis Of A 1996 Body-In-White Dodge Neon, Kendrick M. Shepherd
Faculty Publications
Isogeometric analysis (IGA) has attracted attention from academia and industry because of its high-fidelity results, ability to represent geometry exactly, and potential to streamline the engineering design-through-analysis process. However, one of the greatest challenges limiting the scope of IGA is the ability to rapidly convert CAD geometry into a set of splines suitable for engineering analysis¾particularly for a wide set of shapes of industrial relevance. In this presentation, we describe a new, mathematically rigorous, potentially automatable framework using Ricci flow and subsequent metric optimization through which surface geometries can be rebuilt as sets of watertight, analysis-suitable, boundary-conforming semistructured NURBS patches. …
Using Narrative Cycles To Advance Teacher Educators’ Emotional Work And Practice In An Era Of Affective Polarization, Ramona Maile Cutri, Eric Ruiz Bybee, Erin Feinauer Whiting
Using Narrative Cycles To Advance Teacher Educators’ Emotional Work And Practice In An Era Of Affective Polarization, Ramona Maile Cutri, Eric Ruiz Bybee, Erin Feinauer Whiting
Faculty Publications
‘Affective polarization’ refers to the amount of negativity that people feel for those who belong to a political party other than their own. This self-study reports on our particular use of a narrative cycle model and documents its validity as a tool for doing the emotional work of exploring contradictions in one’s practice without the pressure of engaging in public emotional discourses. We focused on the contra- diction between our intention to teach anti-oppressive teacher edu- cation and inadvertently silencing students who exhibited affective polarization. Our narrative inquiry analysis documented patterns of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that we assert …
Precision Maritime Localization And Landing With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Alexander Jordan, Matthew Kent Rydalch, Tim Mclain, Michael Williamson Tabango
Precision Maritime Localization And Landing With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Alexander Jordan, Matthew Kent Rydalch, Tim Mclain, Michael Williamson Tabango
Student Works
This paper presents a highly effective method for UAV precision shipboard localization and landing using Real-time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK GNSS). To assess the feasibility of RTK GNSS for this use case we explicitly exclude vision-based localization techniques which are most often presented in the literature. Instead, the methods presented in this paper use only RTK GNSS with an inertial measurement unit aboard the landing pad to estimate the state of the boat and the relative position of the UAV with respect to the boat. We use a continuous-discrete extended Kalman filter combined with a complementary filter for …
Is There A Relationship Between Religiosity And Infidelity? A Meta-Analysis, Meghan Maddock
Is There A Relationship Between Religiosity And Infidelity? A Meta-Analysis, Meghan Maddock
Theses and Dissertations
Infidelity in romantic relationships is common and has been associated with relationship dissolution and strain on individuals. Most religions teach that infidelity is harmful, and some researchers have suggested that, in the aggregate, more religious people might be less likely to report infidelity. However, research has been mixed, with some studies finding that more religious people are less likely to report infidelity, other studies finding that more religious people are more likely to report infidelity, and other studies finding no relationship. To clarify seemingly contradictory findings, I conducted a meta-analysis of the infidelity-religiosity relationship with 38 studies and a total …
Dónde Están Les Latinxs? A Content Analysis Of Latinx Representation Across Three Clinical Disciplines, Haley M. Hinkle
Dónde Están Les Latinxs? A Content Analysis Of Latinx Representation Across Three Clinical Disciplines, Haley M. Hinkle
Theses and Dissertations
Latinx, or Hispanic/Latino, minoritized groups experience a broad spectrum of mental health challenges, disparities, and risks at a disproportionate rate compared to both their non-White counterparts and compared to other minorized groups in the U.S. (SAMHSA, 2015). They also experience a number of cultural and individual strengths associated with their values, practices, and resiliencies (Leyva et al, 2022; Gennetian et al, 2021; Calzada et al, 2020). However, given the substantial percentage of Latinxs who live in the United States (18.7%), the mental health needs of this minoritized group are not sufficiently addressed in social science literature, as a number of …
Adolescent Religious Identity And Body Esteem, Megan Gale
Adolescent Religious Identity And Body Esteem, Megan Gale
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents experience a key developmental process of identity formation and try to understand who they are and how they feel about themselves. While research has found religiosity to often predict increased body esteem for religious adults, little is known about the association between religiosity and body esteem for adolescents. Using an Identity Theory lens, the current cross-sectional study (n=1,693) examined the relationship between adolescent religious identity (religious salience and belief being a child of God) and body esteem, mediated by one's attachment to God. Three structural equation mediation models examined 1) overall relationships; 2) relationships by gender; and 3) relationships …
Communication About Pornography And Relationship Quality In Different-Gender Couples, Rachel Ann Augustus
Communication About Pornography And Relationship Quality In Different-Gender Couples, Rachel Ann Augustus
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars have begun to suggest factors that explain and influence the association between pornography use and relationship outcomes but further work is still needed. Communication about pornography is one variable that may be influential but it has yet to be considered in this way. Using a dyadic sample of 713 different-gender couples, I used Actor-Partner Structural Equation Modeling to analyze associations between pornography use (male pornography use, joint pornography use and female pornography use) and relational quality (from the perspective of each partner, respectively), associations between communication about pornography and relationship quality. Communication about pornography was also considered as a …

The Experience Of Friendship As A Characteristic Of Intimate Relationships: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer Griffith
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the construct of friendship, specifically how intimate partners experience friendship in intimate relationships. 45 participants were interviewed one-time (for a total of 60-90 minutes) and asked about their experience of healthy and unhealthy behaviors, including friendship, in committed relationships. Research questions included: how participants define the concept of friendship, behaviors that perpetuate friendship in intimate relationships, perceived benefits of friendship, and what a lack of friendship in their relationship looks like. Participants were asked about friendship generally with the hope that information on the research questions would be …
Behavioral Indicators Of The Therapeutic Alliance In Relation To Dropout In Couple Therapy, S. Celeste Esplin
Behavioral Indicators Of The Therapeutic Alliance In Relation To Dropout In Couple Therapy, S. Celeste Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Almost half of those who start therapy drop out early (Thalmayer, 2018). When therapists work to improve the therapeutic alliance, clients are more likely to stay in treatment and chances of recovery improve (D'Aniello et al., 2018; Escudero & Friedlander, 2017). However, the existing research comes almost entirely from client self-reports of the alliance. Little research has examined what occurs during the session. There has been no research to determine what specific therapeutic alliance behaviors are related to early termination. The current naturalistic study sought to discover if behaviors that strengthen or diminish the therapeutic alliance are related to early …
Method And Interpretation: Gadamer And The Limits Of Methods In Qualitative Research, Jared C. Parker
Method And Interpretation: Gadamer And The Limits Of Methods In Qualitative Research, Jared C. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Qualitative modes of research have been working their way into the mainstream of psychological research. Unfortunately, social psychology has largely resisted this trend, despite the particular utility of qualitative research for investigating social phenomena. Curiously, as qualitative research becomes more widely accepted in psychology, much of the discourse surrounding these approaches has revolved around the procedural dimensions of qualitative inquiry. Specifically, it has focused on developing, describing, and defending various codified approaches to qualitative data analysis. Recently, this methodological paradigm has come under some criticism, with scholars critiquing codified methods as leading to shallow, superficial, and formulaic research. Others have …
Exercise As A Predictor Of Change In Self-Reported Marital Satisfaction And Behaviors Of Couples In Therapy, Emily J. Nelson
Exercise As A Predictor Of Change In Self-Reported Marital Satisfaction And Behaviors Of Couples In Therapy, Emily J. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies looking to link physical exercise with beneficial couple outcomes have had mixed results, showing benefits for females but not males in some instances, and even negative effects for males in one instance. However, these studies used self-report data for exercise which may suffer from reporting errors. This study analyzed how daily exercise, measured by participants wearing accelerometers, impacts marital satisfaction, positive behaviors, and negative behaviors in a clinical population. The data was analyzed using multilevel models to determine how time spent exercising impacted individuals and their partners in terms of relationship outcomes. Results indicated small but significant relationships …
Selecting And Optimizing Origami-Based Patterns For Deployable Space Systems, Diana Stefania Bolanos
Selecting And Optimizing Origami-Based Patterns For Deployable Space Systems, Diana Stefania Bolanos
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the design difficulties encountered when designing deployable origami-based arrays. Specific considerations regarding thickness accommodation, deployment, and parameter modifications are discussed. Patterns such as the Miura-ori, flasher, and hexagon are investigated, with emphasis placed on pattern modification from zero-thickness to finite-thickness. Applying origami principles to form engineering solutions is a complicated task. Competing requirements may create confusion around which pattern is most favorable for the space array application. Implementing origami into a finite-thickness, engineered system poses challenges that are not manifest in a zero-thickness model. As such, it is important to understand and address the limitations of the …
Atomic Layer Deposition And High Sensitivity-Low Energy Ion Scattering For The Determination Of The Surface Silanol Density On Glass And Unsupervised Exploratory Data Analysis With Summary Statistics And Other Methods, Tahereh Gholian Avval
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing importance of hand-held devices with touch displays, the need for flat panel displays (FPDs) will likely increase in the future. Glass is the most important substrate for FPD manufacturing, where both its bulk and surface properties are critical for its performance. Many properties of the glass used in FPDs are controlled by its surface chemistry. Surface hydroxyls are the most important functional groups on a glass surface, which control processes that occurs on oxide surfaces, including wetting, adhesion, electrostatic charging and discharge, and the rate of contamination. In this dissertation, I present a new approach for determining …
Neuroticism's Ties To Relationship Satisfaction: What Behaviors Matter?, Alexyss M. Lange
Neuroticism's Ties To Relationship Satisfaction: What Behaviors Matter?, Alexyss M. Lange
Theses and Dissertations
In multiple studies, neuroticism and romantic relationship satisfaction are negatively related to one another. Yet, the exact behaviors that link neuroticism to lower relationship satisfaction are unknown. Our seven-day daily diary study (N = 246) identified specific, everyday behaviors that might mediate this association. After establishing positive and negative factors using exploratory factor analysis, we examined whether positive or negative behaviors (and sub-categories of these dimensions) mediate the relationship between neuroticism and relationship satisfaction. Our results showed that negative behaviors mediated the relationship between neuroticism and relationship satisfaction but positive behaviors did not. A subcategory of conflict tactics mediated the …
The Effect Of Csr On Attitudes Towards Outward And Inward Fdi: A Cross-National Comparison Of Citizen Perceptions In The United States And Kenya, Lindsey Walker
The Effect Of Csr On Attitudes Towards Outward And Inward Fdi: A Cross-National Comparison Of Citizen Perceptions In The United States And Kenya, Lindsey Walker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study runs a survey experiment in the United States, the home country, and Kenya, the host country, to understand how CSR (corporate social responsibility) affects views towards MNCs (multinational corporations) and FDI (foreign direct investment) from a business and political standpoint. When analyzing the combined CSR treatment that pays no attention to CSR type, I find little effect on perceptions of FDI and MNCs in both the Kenyan and American sample, besides for how the Americans saw positive spill-over effects of CSR to mean the MNC was a good company in a variety of ways. When the CSR treatment …
Quantifying Protein Quality To Understand Protein Homeostasis, Hsien-Jung Lavender Lin
Quantifying Protein Quality To Understand Protein Homeostasis, Hsien-Jung Lavender Lin
Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are the center of all biochemical reactions in living organisms. Proteins need to be present at the right time, in the right place, with the correct concentration and have the right shape to carry their designated function. Protein homeostasis is when all proteins in the proteome are in functional balance, and such balance is maintained by synthesis, folding, and degradation machinery. When protein homeostasis is lost, organisms start to age and develop diseases. To truly unveil disease mechanisms and provide more efficient means for treatment and prevention, we need a holistic understanding of the mechanism of protein homeostasis. Currently, …
Measured Spectral, Directional Radiative Behavior Of Corrugated Surfaces, Kyle S. Meaker
Measured Spectral, Directional Radiative Behavior Of Corrugated Surfaces, Kyle S. Meaker
Theses and Dissertations
Spacecraft thermal control is entirely reliant upon radiative heat transfer for temperature regulation. Current methods are often static in nature and do not provide dynamic control of radiative heat transfer. As a result, modern spacecraft thermal control systems are typically 'cold-biased' with radiators that are larger than necessary for many operating conditions. Deploying a variable radiator as a thermal control technique in which the projected surface area can be adjusted to provide the appropriate heat loss for a given condition can reduce unnecessary heat rejection and reduce power requirements. However, the radiative behavior of the apparent surface representing the expanding/collapsing …
Reconstructing Historical Earthquake-Induced Tsunamis: Case Study Of 1820 Event Near South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Taylor Jole Paskett
Reconstructing Historical Earthquake-Induced Tsunamis: Case Study Of 1820 Event Near South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Taylor Jole Paskett
Theses and Dissertations
We build on the method introduced by Ringer, et al., applying it to an 1820 event that happened near South Sulawesi, Indonesia. We utilize other statistical models to aid our Metropolis-Hastings sampler, including a Gaussian process which informs the prior. We apply the method to multiple possible fault zones to determine which fault is the most likely source of the earthquake and tsunami. After collecting nearly 80,000 samples, we find that between the two most likely fault zones, the Walanae fault zone matches the anecdotal accounts much better than Flores. However, to support the anecdotal data, both samplers tend toward …

An Acoustofluidic Scanning Nanoscope Using Enhanced Image Stacking And Processing, Geonsoo Jin, Joseph Rich, Jianping Xia, Albert J. He, Chenglong Zhao, Tony Jun Huang
Faculty Publications
Nanoscale optical resolution with a large field of view is a critical feature for many research and industry areas, such as semiconductor fabrication, biomedical imaging, and nanoscale material identification. Several scanning microscopes have been developed to resolve the inverse relationship between the resolution and field of view; however, those scanning microscopes still rely upon fluorescence labeling and complex optical systems. To overcome these limitations, we developed a dual-camera acoustofluidic nanoscope with a seamless image merging algorithm (alpha-blending process). This design allows us to precisely image both the sample and the microspheres simultaneously and accurately track the particle path and location. …
Enabling Successful Human-Robot Interaction Through Human-Human Co-Manipulation Analysis, Soft Robot Modeling, And Reliable Model Evolutionary Gain-Based Predictive Control (Mega-Pc), Spencer W. Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Soft robots are inherently safer than traditional robots due to their compliance and high power density ratio resulting in lower accidental impact forces. Thus they are a natural option for human-robot interaction. This thesis specifically looked at human-robot co-manipulation which is defined as a human and a robot working together to move an object too large or awkward to be safely maneuvered by a single agent. To better understand how humans communicate while co-manipulating an object, this work looked at haptic interaction of human-human dyadic co-manipulation trials and studied some of the trends found in that interaction. These trends point …
Simulation And Localization Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Leveraging Lie Group Structure, Easton Robert Potokar
Simulation And Localization Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Leveraging Lie Group Structure, Easton Robert Potokar
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have the potential to dramatically improve safety, quality of life and general scientific knowledge. Our coasts, lakes and rivers are filled with various forms of marine infrastructure including dams, bridges, ship hulls, communication lines, and oil rigs. Each of these structures requires regular inspection, and current methods utilize divers, which is dangerous, expensive, and time consuming. AUVs have the potential to alleviate these difficulties and enable more regular inspection of these structures. Furthermore, there are significant scientific discoveries in the fields of geology, marine biology and medicine that AUV exploration of our oceans will enable. Since …

Field-Based Selenium Partitioning Coefficients And Trophic Transfer Factors For Cutthroat Trout Fisheries From Four Montane Lakes, Colorado, Usa, Scott J. Herrmann, Del Wayne R. Nimmo, Lynn M. Herrmann-Hoesing
Western North American Naturalist
Most studies of selenium (Se) bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in freshwater habitats have focused primarily on lotic and lentic sites in regions of elevated selenium. In contrast to previous reports, we proposed investigating Se partitioning from water to subsequent trophic levels in oligotrophic montane lakes using concentrations in water, sediment, periphyton, and filamentous algae, and also in the stomach contents and tissues of cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The indicator values for the level-one (water to particulate) partitioning coefficients (Kd values) or enrichment factors (EFs) were as high as 1,641,000 …

Trace Elements In Walleye Tissues And Dietary Components From An Impoundment Located Downstream Of The Leadville Mining District, Colorado, I: Hg And Se, Scott J. Herrmann, Del Wayne R. Nimmo, Igor V. Melnykov
Western North American Naturalist
There is a paucity of studies focusing on how total mercury (THg) and total selenium (TSe) concentrations vary in walleye tissues and prey organisms from a reservoir that is downstream from a major mining district and whose basin consists of Cretaceous sedimentary Se-bearing outcroppings. Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado is fed by water from the upper Arkansas River, which has been polluted by trace metals and metalloids since mining began in 1859. Pueblo Reservoir is the only mainstem impoundment on the Upper Arkansas River and is located about 251 km downstream from the historic Leadville Mining District. Nearly all the contaminated …
