Carl Hansen's Concept Of Christmas, David Iversen
Carl Hansen's Concept Of Christmas, David Iversen
The Bridge
As one of the major Danish-American immigrant writers
of the early 20th century, Carl Hansen wrote short stories,
sketches, and one novel, co-founded (with Oscar W. Lund)
The Christmas journal Julegranen, and published Dansk Jul i
Amerika in 1909. This paper will focus on three stories,
published in Landmrend: Fortrellinger by Dansk Boghandel
in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1908, which have Christmas as a
theme. The three stories are: For 30 aar siden (30 Years
Ago"), Bowlegged Joe ("Bowlegged Joe"), and Gamle Hans
Nielsen's sidste Jul ("Old Hans Nielsen's Last Christmas").
What follows is a brief look at "Carl Hansen's …

"A Little Oasis In The Desert": Community Building In Hurricane, Utah, 1860-1930, W. Paul Reeve
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study of the mechanisms employed in the community building process of Hurricane, Utah. It traces the roots of the town's early settlers beginning with their arrival in southern Utah in the early 1860s through the founding of Hurricane and the establishment of its social order. This pioneering period largely ended by 1930.
Hurricane's founders were the remnants of the Mormon Church's failed Cotton Mission. Original U.S. census research shows that by 1900 close to half of the mission's colonizers abandoned the challenging desert of southern Utah. The stalwarts who remained fashioned the Hurricane Canal with the …

A Reasoned Interlingua For Knowledge-Based Machine Translation, Deryle W. Lonsdale, John R. R. Leavitt, Alexander M. Franz
Faculty Publications
Research in machine translation (MT) has resulted in a number of Machine Translation systems that are based on the interlingua approach. This paper reports the results of designing an interlingua for a large-scale, practical MT system designed to translate technical information from English into a number of target languages. After an analysis of the main features of the translation problem faced by this system we describe the principles underlying our design decisions. We address issues such as the design and development methodology, the grain size of the representation, and our efforts to endow the interlingua representation with the ability to …
The Impact Of Coal Pyrolysis On Combustion, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher
The Impact Of Coal Pyrolysis On Combustion, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
The pyrolysis process has impacts throughout coal combustion. The roles of pyrolysis in various aspectsof the coal combustion process are described, including the devolatilization yield, nitrogen release, softening and swelling, soot formation, and char reactivity. These processes can be understood and quantitatively predicted using recently developed network pyrolysis models that describe the transformation of the coal's chemical structure. The models are described and examples of their predictive ability for important coal combustion phenomena are presented.
Effects Of Soil Structure On Burrow Characteristics Of Five Small Mammal Species, John W. Laundré, Timothy D. Reynolds
Effects Of Soil Structure On Burrow Characteristics Of Five Small Mammal Species, John W. Laundré, Timothy D. Reynolds
Great Basin Naturalist
Burrows of small mammals can impact a variety of soil processes including organic turnover, aeration, and mineralization rates. The structure of burrows, depth, length, and complexity can influence the extent of the impact burrows have on soil processes. Soil properties, in turn, are thought to affect burrow structure. To increase our understanding of burrow-soil dynamics, we compared maximum depth, total volume, total length, volume:length ratio, and complexity of burrows of five small mammal species with bulk density of soil texture in multiple regression analyses. Burrows of Wyoming ground squirrels (Spermophilus elegans) were deeper, longer, and more complex as …

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Small Mammal Density And Species Composition On A Radioactive Waste Disposal Area: The Role Of Edge Habitat, John D. Boone, Barry L. Keller
Great Basin Naturalist
Small mammal populations inhabiting radioactive waste disposal areas could be important vectors of contaminant redistribution, given sufficiently high numbers. Earlier studies conducted at the Subsurface Disposal Area (SDA) in southeastern Idaho found small mammal densities equaling or exceeding densities in native habitat. Our live-trapping study was conducted in 1988 and 1989 to assess the role of edge habitat (where SDA crested wheatgrass [Agropyron cristatum] plantings and native sagebrush habitat are separated by an earthen dike) in facilitating use of this highly modified site by small mammals. Small mammals had a significantly greater density in SDA edge habitat than …

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Much has been written in library literature of late about access and ownership and how libraries should respond organizationally to the new role libraries are developing to meet the dual challenges of pervasive information technology and reduced budgets. There are repeated calls for libraries to give customized service, be intimately aware of users' needs and deliver documents at the point of use. In an article on the efficacy of branch libraries entitled "Organization Misfits," it is posited that departmental (or "branch") libraries, due to their size and flexibility, can provide models for this type of service with little change to …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Finally I get to write you a few lines from duty. As Papa probably has already informed you, I went from Basel to Monthal, where I met Mama and Werner, as well as Rosa and Manja Labhart from Moscow. Werner was very happy. He is thin but looks strong and healthy. He did not want to answer my question of whether he would like to come back to America with me after the war. But I am decided about bringing him back with me. On the same evening I also visited Onkel Hermann and David in Zurich. I also met …

Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Faculty Publications
An approach to local reactive coordinated intelligent control based on the concept of an epistemic system, together with a principle of action that may be exercised locally, is presented. An epistemic system provides a mechanism for agents to characterize their knowledge corpora, options, goals, and beliefs. Levi's rule of epistemic utility provides a principle of action for decision making by comparing the informational value of rejection with the belief of correctness. Decisions are made locally and reactively, rather than globally. Coordination is implemented between agents by sharing and learning the epistemic systems of other agents. The resulting coordination model is …
Differential Responses To Nitrogen Form And Concentration For Oryzopsis Hymenoides And Elymus Lanceolatus, Robert S. Nowak, Cheryl L. Nowak, Jay E. Anderson
Differential Responses To Nitrogen Form And Concentration For Oryzopsis Hymenoides And Elymus Lanceolatus, Robert S. Nowak, Cheryl L. Nowak, Jay E. Anderson
Great Basin Naturalist
In a greenhouse experiment, effects of nitrogen form and concentration on productivity and dry matter allocation differed between two species native to semiarid ecosystems of the Great Basin. Aboveground production of green surface area and of dry matter were consistently enhanced by increased nitrogen for the rhizomatous grass Elymus lanceolatus, but not for the bunchgrass Oryzopsis hymenoides. These differences were likely due to inherently low growth rates of O. hymenoides. Aboveground dry matter allocation also differed between the two species. O. hymenoides had more leaves per tiller with increased nitrogen, whereas leaf size but not number increased …
Prey Selection And Food Habits Of Burrowing Owls In Colorado, David L. Plumpton, R. Scott Lutz
Prey Selection And Food Habits Of Burrowing Owls In Colorado, David L. Plumpton, R. Scott Lutz
Great Basin Naturalist
Food habits of Burrowing Owls (Speotyto cunicularia) were studied during the breeding seasons of 1990 and 1991 in central Colorado. Concurrent insect availability studies were conducted to determine selection for specific insect families. Analysis of 1445 castings indicated use of only one insect family, the carrion beetles (Silphidae), at a rate greater than expected based on availability in one year. Castings and prey remains showed different dietary components. Prey remains showed greater use of small mammals, moths, amphibians, and passerines, and castings indicated greater use of mice and beetles. Methodology in raptor food habits studies may therefore bias …

The current Internet architecture, embodied in the Internet Protocol (IP) network protocol, offers a very simple service model: point-to-point best-effort service. In recent years, several new classes of distributed applications have been developed, such as remote video, multimedia conferencing, data fusion, visualization, and virtual reality. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Internet’s primitive service model is inadequate for these new applications. This inadequacy stems from the failure of the point-to-point best-effort service model to address two application requirements. First, many of these applications are very sensitive to the quality of service their packets receive. For a network to deliver …
The Economics Of The Book Of Mormon: Joseph Smith As Translator Or Commentator, Garth L. Mangum
The Economics Of The Book Of Mormon: Joseph Smith As Translator Or Commentator, Garth L. Mangum
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
From 1830 to the present those who find it difficult to accept “angelic visitations in the age of railroads” have searched Joseph Smith’s nineteenth-century environment for sources of the subject matter of the Book of Mormon. For example, in 1990 Susan Curtis explains the economic subthemes of the book as Joseph Smith’s commentary on “market capitalism.” But the economic conditions of Joseph Smith’s time and place are not reflected in the Book of Mormon. Its economic descriptions are consistent with our vast knowledge of the economic conditions of the ancient Middle East and not inconsistent with the little known of …
Depletion Of Soil Moisture By Two Cold-Desert Bunchgrasses And Effects On Photosynthetic Performance, Jay E. Anderson, Nancee L. Toft
Depletion Of Soil Moisture By Two Cold-Desert Bunchgrasses And Effects On Photosynthetic Performance, Jay E. Anderson, Nancee L. Toft
Great Basin Naturalist
This study compared the abilities of two cool-season bunchgrasses to extract moisture from a drying soil and compared photosynthetic and stomatal responses of the two species as soil moisture supplies were depleted. When grown in 49-L pots in a greenhouse, Leymus cinereus extracted more water from the soil and maintained higher gas exchange rates to lower absolute amounts of soil water than did Agropyron desertorum. The soil water content at the lower limit of extraction was 10.3% for L. cinereus and 13.3% for A. desertorum. When soil moisture was expressed as extractable soil water, there was little difference …

Response Of A Sonoran Riparian Forest To A 10-Year Return Flood, J. C. Stromberg, B. D. Richter, D. T. Patten, L. G. Wolden
Great Basin Naturalist
In March 1991 a 10-year return flood (368 m3s−1) occurred in the Hassayampa River, a perennial stream (0.1 m3s−1 base flow) within the Sonoran Desert. Depth of the floodwater ranged from 2.64 ± 0.20 m (mean ± SD) near the stream to 0.47 ± 0.31 m in the highest floodplain zone (Prosopis forest). Flow velocity was 1.7 ± 0.6 m s−1 and 0.9 0.4 m s−1 in these same zones. An average of 8 cm of sediment was depositred on the floodplain, with maximum deposition (to 0.5 m) on densely …
