Glimpses From An Industrial Electrician's Lifetime, Ernest Thurkauf Jun 1993

Glimpses From An Industrial Electrician's Lifetime, Ernest Thurkauf

Swiss American Historical Society Review

My life's main line of work has been as an industrial maintenance electrician, though in early years I tried my hand as blacksmith's helper, arc and acetylene welder, coal mine laborer, lumber jack, farm hand, fruit picker, and other miscellaneous work. But it was as a trained electrician that I got my greatest joy in working especially in training men in my line of work. In my old years now, I have given much thought to what have been some very challenging jobs I had encountered as I struggled onward in this best of all possible. worlds, and these are· …

Effects Of Crosstalk On Fidelity In Page-Oriented Volume Holographic Optical Data Storage, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana May 1993

Effects Of Crosstalk On Fidelity In Page-Oriented Volume Holographic Optical Data Storage, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana

Faculty Publications

Using numerical simulation, we quantitatively examine the effects of cross talk on the recall fidelity of stored binary data in a page-oriented volume holographic memory system. We discuss the trade-off between the signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed bits and the optical throughput of the system (i.e., the fraction of the incident beam that is diffracted to the detector plane). We show that significant gains in the signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved with modest decreases in optical throughput in the region where the highest throughput occurs. The magnitude of this trade-off is influenced by both beam degeneracy and coherent recording cross …

Resolution Enhancement Of Spaceborne Scatterometer Data, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin, Peter T. Whiting May 1993

Resolution Enhancement Of Spaceborne Scatterometer Data, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin, Peter T. Whiting

Faculty Publications

A method for generating enhanced resolution radar images of the Earth's surface using spaceborne scatterometry is presented. The technique is based on an image reconstruction technique that takes advantage of the spatial overlap in scatterometer measurements made at different times to provide enhanced imaging resolution. The reconstruction algorithm is described, and the technique is demonstrated using both simulated and actual Seasat-A Scatterometer (SASS) measurements. The technique can also be used with ERS-1 scatterometer data. The SASS-derived images, which have approximately 4-km resolution, illustrate the resolution enhancement capability of the technique, which permits utilization of both historic and contemporary scatterometer data …

Cyanobacteria And Cyanolichens: Can They Enhance Availability Of Essential Minerals For Higher Plants?, Kimball T. Harper, Rosemary L. Pendleton Apr 1993

Cyanobacteria And Cyanolichens: Can They Enhance Availability Of Essential Minerals For Higher Plants?, Kimball T. Harper, Rosemary L. Pendleton

Great Basin Naturalist

In both field and greenhouse studies, cyanobacterial and cyanolichens of cold-temperature deserts often enhance growth and essential uptake by associated herbs. That effect is associated with better seedling establishment and larger seedlings. The following are possible mechanisms for these effects: (1) the microbiota concentrate essential elements in available forms in soil surface layers, (2) the microbial surface covers are usually darker colored than the soil itself and produce warmer soils during cool seasons when soil water is most available, (3) the gelatinous sheaths of several cyanobacterial genera common on alkaline deserts contain chelating compounds, and (4) conditions that favor persistent …

Soil Microstructure In Soils Of The Colorado Plateau: The Role Of The Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Vaginatus, Jayne Belnap, John S. Gardner Apr 1993

Soil Microstructure In Soils Of The Colorado Plateau: The Role Of The Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Vaginatus, Jayne Belnap, John S. Gardner

Great Basin Naturalist

The role of the cyanobacterium Microcoleus vaginatus in cold-desert soil crusts is investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Crusts from sandstone-, limestone-, and gypsum-derived soils are examined. When dry, polysaccharide sheath material from this cyanobacterium can be seen winding through and across all three types of soil surfaces, attaching to and binding soil particles together. When wet, sheaths and living filaments can be seen absorbing water, swelling and covering soil surfaces even more extensively. Addition of negatively charged material, found both as sheath material and attached clay particles, may affect cation exchange capacity of these soils as well. As a result …

Perception Of Leadership Style And Job Satisfaction, Carlos Holgado Apr 1993

Perception Of Leadership Style And Job Satisfaction, Carlos Holgado

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between the perception of leadership behaviors, self-perception (managers and supervisors) vs. perception of others (staff members), and the level of job satisfaction of those staff members will be analyzed.

The main focus of the present study is to determine what the relationship is among the four basic leadership behaviors - Telling, Selling, Participating, and Delegating- based on the Situational Leadership theory (Hersey and Blanchard, 1974, 1982) perceived by staff members, and job satisfaction in terms of work, pay, opportunities for promotion, supervision style, relationship with coworkers-workers-workers-workers, and job in general according to the Job Satisfaction theory developed by …

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay Mar 1993

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay

Faculty Publications

The feasibility of employing volume holographic techniques for the implementation of highly multiplexed weighted fan-out/fan-in interconnections is analyzed on the basis of interconnection fidelity, optical throughput, and complexity of recording schedule or implementation hardware. These feasibility criteria were quantitatively evaluated using the optical beam propagation method to numerically simulate the diffraction characteristics of volume holographic interconnections recorded in a linear holographic material. We find that conventional interconnection architectures (that are based on a single coherent optical source) exhibit a direct trade-off between interconnection fidelity and optical throughput on the one hand, and recording schedule or hardware complexity on the other. …

King On King Lear: Finding Virtue In Minute Particulars, A. Jane Birch

Faculty Publications

“The social sciences should not exist. And I'm grateful that there are people in the social sciences working to destroy them.” This statement might easily be dismissed as rash and unjustified were the author not a world-class scholar, the quality of whose life-long study serves as an invitation to consider his reasons for making such a declaration. If, in the end, we cannot concur with Dr. Arthur Henry King's verdict on the ultimate value of the social sciences, might not his analysis of its problems give us a new perspective from which we might reevaluate it? Perhaps there is something …

Nineteenth Century Swiss Valaisan Immigration To The United States, Jane Adèle Chapman Feb 1993

Nineteenth Century Swiss Valaisan Immigration To The United States, Jane Adèle Chapman

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In writing this paper I have had before me a mental picture of a young couple who left Martigny-Bourg in bas-Valais in the summer of 1854. They sailed from Le Havre with their small son on the new American ship Brother Jonathan to the Port of New York and continued overland to Wisconsin. The study of Valaisan emigration, of which this paper is a part, is my attempt to put this rather blurry mental picture in focus.

The Origins Of Groundwater Laws In Arizona, Colorado, And Utah, Richard T. Probst Jan 1993

The Origins Of Groundwater Laws In Arizona, Colorado, And Utah, Richard T. Probst

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Water is a limited resource that cannot be replaced, and alternate sources for water are not available. In the western United States, groundwater laws vary in each state. Until recent years, these laws were often vague or non-existent. According to Sax, groundwater laws did not exist because little was known about the contribution of groundwater flow to the hydrologic cycle (1990, 372). When technology allowed man to tap underground water resources effectively, laws were written for groundwater. However, the laws governing surface water are related to groundwater laws. It was not until after World War II that most states began …

Chemical Structural Features Of Pyridine Extracts Of The Argonne Premium Coals Using 13c Nmr Spectroscopy, Thomas H. Fletcher, S Bai, Ronald J. Pugmire, Steven Wood, David M. Grant Jan 1993

Chemical Structural Features Of Pyridine Extracts Of The Argonne Premium Coals Using 13c Nmr Spectroscopy, Thomas H. Fletcher, S Bai, Ronald J. Pugmire, Steven Wood, David M. Grant

Faculty Publications

Soxhlet extractions were performed on the eight Argonne Premium coals using pyridine purged with argon and followed by a novel washing procedure to remove the pyridine. Mass closure (extracts plus residues) on duplicate experiments accounted for 94-96% of the original coal, repeatable to within 2%. Chemical structural features determined from 13C NMR analyses of the extracts and residues showed more attachments per aromatic cluster for the residues, indicating a greater degree of covalent bonding in the residue than in the extract. 1H NMR analysis of the extracts showed a gradual increase in the hydrogen aromaticity with rank, along …

Faculty Publications

A major objective of the Advanced Combustion Engineering Research Center is the development and verification of data on fuel characterization and reaction mechanisms and rates that can be incorporated into submodels for use in the comprehensive combustion codes. As technology has advanced, the levels of analytical sophistication has also advanced, making it possible to augment the existing body of information with new data. From this new data it is possible to draw new insights regarding the complex nature of coal and the various processes associated with combustion. The ACERC program has made it possible to bring different disciplines together to …

Progress In Coal Pyrolysis, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher, Ronald J. Pugmire Jan 1993

Progress In Coal Pyrolysis, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher, Ronald J. Pugmire

Faculty Publications

The heterogeneous nature of coal and the complexity of the pyrolysis process have made it very difficult to perform unambiguous experiments to determine the rates and mechanisms in coal pyrolysis. However, recent years have seen a number of new experimental and theoretical approaches which shed new light on the subject. This paper considers the recent progress on kinetics, the formation of volatile products, network models, cross-linking, rank effects, and the ‘two-component’ model of coal structure. Recent experiments which measured coal particle temperatures at high heating rates provide reasonable agreement on kinetic rate constants. These rates also agree with those derived …
