Solving The Inverse Problem In Stochastic Groundwater Modelling With Artificial Neural Networks, C. Rajanayaka, S. Samarasinghe, D. Kulasiri Jul 2002

Solving The Inverse Problem In Stochastic Groundwater Modelling With Artificial Neural Networks, C. Rajanayaka, S. Samarasinghe, D. Kulasiri

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper, prediction capability of a hybrid Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) was investigatedto solve the groundwater inverse problem. Initially, a Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) network was developedand it was found that network produced better results when the target range of the parameters is smaller. Therefore, a Self-Organising Network (SON) was used to identify the objective subrange of the parameterand then the MLP model was employed to obtain final estimates. The data for the ANN was obtained from anumerical model that was utilised to simulate the solute transport in saturated groundwater flow. The forwardproblem of the numerical model was solved to …

Data-Based Mechanistic And Top-Down Modelling, Peter C. Young Jul 2002

Data-Based Mechanistic And Top-Down Modelling, Peter C. Young

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The paper discusses the problems associated with environmental modelling and the need to develop simple, ‘top-down’, stochastic models that match the information content of the data. It introduces the concept of Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and contrasts its inductive approach with the hypotheticodeductive approaches that dominate most environmental modelling research at the present time. The major methodological procedures utilized in DBM modelling are outlined and two practical examples illustrate how it has been applied in a hydrological and water quality context. The use of this same methodology as a basis for the evaluation and simplification of large deterministic simulation models …

Optimization Of A Model To Predict Salinity Intrusion In San Francisco Bay Estuary Using A Genetic Algorithm, T. Rajkumar, David E. Thompson Jul 2002

Optimization Of A Model To Predict Salinity Intrusion In San Francisco Bay Estuary Using A Genetic Algorithm, T. Rajkumar, David E. Thompson

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Salinity intrusion is a significant issue in the San Francisco Bay Delta because this estuarycontributes substantially to fresh water supply for much of northern California. Traditionally, salinity alongthe estuary has been measured using monitoring instruments installed at various locations within theSacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system, and these measurements are used to predict future conditionsand evaluate the water management alternatives. The California Department of Water Resources DeltaSimulation Model (DWRDSM) is used for this type of analysis. DWRDSM is an unsteady one-dimensionalhydrodynamic and salt transport model. It can provide estimates of salinity at almost any location within theBay-Delta system. However, like many …

Reservoir Management Decision Support, J. Palomo, D. R. Insua, K. A. Salewicz Jul 2002

Reservoir Management Decision Support, J. Palomo, D. R. Insua, K. A. Salewicz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We describe our work in developing decision support tools to manage large international rivers. This is a complex environmental decision making problem due to the presence of multiple objectives stemming from multiple uses of the reservoirs (energy production, irrigation, flood protection, ), several sources of uncertainty (inflows, water demand, evaporation, ), long-term effects of decisions, In comparison with other methodologies applied to solve operational problems, decision analysis has provided effective means to model preferences and beliefs of managers, leading to complex stochastic dynamic programming problems. To solve them, we have introduced novel computational strategies. The practical success of our approach …

Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler Jul 2002

Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A world macroeconomic model is being developed to investigate policies for climate change and sustainabledevelopment, as a module of an IAM structure for the UK Tyndall Centre. This requires an economic modelfor the next 50-100 years, to show how changes in industrial structure and technology change GHGemissions. There is no suitable and generally accepted theory of long term technical change/development(Kondratiev waves) for incorporation in a macroeconomic modelling structure. However, there is now a gooddescriptive theory, which is intended to provide an economic history perspective of long term change. This isFreeman and Louçν (2001). The objective of our model is to …

A Generic Framework For The Identification Of Parsimonious Rainfall-Runoff Models, T. Wagener, H. S. Wheater Jul 2002

A Generic Framework For The Identification Of Parsimonious Rainfall-Runoff Models, T. Wagener, H. S. Wheater

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A task which is often central to hydrological modelling is the identification of an appropriate model structure and a suitable parameter set for a specific case, i.e. a given set of modelling objectives, catchment characteristics and data. However, this identification process is difficult and will often result in a range of possible models, i.e. different parameter sets within a certain model structure, or different model structures. Two generic rainfall-runoff modelling and Monte Carlo analysis toolboxes have been developed to allow for the implementation and subsequent comparison of spatially lumped, metric and parametric model components in order to identify the model(s) …

A Decision Support Gis For The Clean Water Act Permit Review Analysis, Wei (Wayne) Ji, Rima A. Wahab, Jia (Jane) Ma

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Section 404 of the Clean Water Act is the primary federal statute of the United States that regulates the discharge of dredged or fill materials into lakes, rivers, and wetlands. The Section 404 permit review process involves comprehensive assessments of physical, biological, ecological, and socioeconomic impacts of potential human alterations on aquatic ecosystems across spatial scales. Such assessments require the integration of management decision-making with innovative data handling techniques and assessment methodology. The Section 404-permit process is often hindered by the lack of well-developed scientific information and the technical tools for efficient data analysis. The individual permit review frequently becomes …

Appropriate Hydrological Modelling Of Climate Change Impacts On River Flooding, Martijn J. Booij Jul 2002

Appropriate Hydrological Modelling Of Climate Change Impacts On River Flooding, Martijn J. Booij

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

How good should a river basin model be to assess the impact of climate change on river flooding for a specific geographical area? The determination of such an appropriate model should reveal which physical processes should be incorporated and which data and mathematical process descriptions should be used at which spatial and temporal scales. A procedure for determining an appropriate model has been developed and applied to the above mentioned specific problem for the Meuse river in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The model appropriateness procedure consists of three steps. First, the dominant processes and associated key variables are identified. …

Hydrologic Modelling And Analysis Using A Self- Organizing Linear Output Network, K. Hsu, S. Sorooshian, H. V. Gupta, X. Gao, B. Imam

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been broadly applied to many hydrological applicationsfor which their underlying processes are complicated nonlinear. Although many networks, such as multilayerfeedforward neural networks (MFNs), provide excellent capability in function fittings, very often, theyare referred to as black-box models. In this study, a multivariate ANN procedure, entitled SOLO (Self-Organizing Linear Output mapping network) is introduced. This model architecture has been designed forrapid estimation of network structure/parameters and system outputs. Furthermore, the SOLO providesfeatures that facilitate insight to the input-output processes, thereby extending its usefulness as a tool forinvestigations into the underlying processes through the data classification processes. …

Sequential Development Of A Conceptual Hydrological Model Considering Alpine Basin Processes, Hubert Holzmann, H. P. Nachtnebel Jul 2002

Sequential Development Of A Conceptual Hydrological Model Considering Alpine Basin Processes, Hubert Holzmann, H. P. Nachtnebel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the frame of an applied research project the authors had to develop a runoff forecast tool to enable a prediction of the hydropower potential with a lead time of four days. Therefore procedures for runoff, snow accumulation and snowmelt were sequentially generated, leading to model types ranging from a statistical approach via one storage/single outflow type, one storage/two outflow model to a two storage/triple outflow concept. This contribution presents a procedure to adapt model complexity as far as necessary to improve runoff simulation while still keeping the type of a parsimonious, conceptual model. The improvements of the results are …

Modelling Temporal Variations In Leachate Quantity Generated At Kahrizak Landfill, E. Safari, C. Baronian Jul 2002

Modelling Temporal Variations In Leachate Quantity Generated At Kahrizak Landfill, E. Safari, C. Baronian

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Kahrizak landfill has been in operation for several decades with no record of the quantity of thegenerated leachate. An attempt was made to develop a water balance model, which despite the current roughestimates of annual leachate quantity at this site, takes into account the precipitation and evaporation patternsas well as the concept of field capacity. Changes in field capacity and water consumed in gas generationwere formulated based on empirical relationships of the nearest applicability to this site found in theliterature. Monthly meteorological data were employed with an option provided to convert them into dailyaverage values to match the daily time …

Regional Integrated Management Information System, M. A. Cameron, B. F. W. Croke, K. L. Taylor, Glen Walker, B. Watson

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Landholders, departmental agencies and other stakeholders have long been involved in knowledge building of the physical elements affecting land use. Often, however, this has been without any accompanying information on social and economic impacts, or systems for exploring catchment trade-off decisions. RIMIS is the concept of a regional management system designed for landscape managers. It has a web-compatible interface allowing multiple users to access distributed data sources (including spatial databases) and run distributed bio-physical and socio-economic models to explore catchment management problems i.e. ask ‘what if?’ questions. Its models bring together science, sociology and economics, to explore interactions and show …

A Regional Water Quality Model Designed For A Range Of Users And For Retrofit And Re-Use, R. A. Vertessy, J. M. Rahman, F. G. R. Watson, R. M. Argent, S. M. Cuddy, S. P. Seaton Jul 2002

A Regional Water Quality Model Designed For A Range Of Users And For Retrofit And Re-Use, R. A. Vertessy, J. M. Rahman, F. G. R. Watson, R. M. Argent, S. M. Cuddy, S. P. Seaton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We discuss the motivations for, and software design concepts underpinning, the development of a regional water quality model. The Environmental Management Support System (EMSS) was developed to predict daily fluxes of runoff, total suspended sediment, total nitrogen and total phosphorous through a large-scale river network. It was built using a custom environmental modelling framework called Tarsier, founded on the Borland C++ Builder rapid application development environment. Three autonomous models are integrated within the EMSS, but are loosely coupled so that alternative models could be retrofitted into the system if desired. The three models share common data handling and visualisation routines …

Designing A Multi-Agent System For Integrated Protection In Agriculture, A. Perini, A. Susi Jul 2002

Designing A Multi-Agent System For Integrated Protection In Agriculture, A. Perini, A. Susi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Integrated Protection (IP) in agriculture consists of a set of practices aimed at favoring the set upof a development model characterized by a reduced environmental impact. The application of IP practicesin plant disease management by growers and agronomists requires both specialistic skills, historical data andinformation on chemicals and on low impact techniques for pest management. These sources of informationand knowledge are distributed among different actors in the agriculture production system.Recent approaches in developing decision support systems for agriculture, and more generally for environmentalproblems management, tend to adopt a “systemic” approach. That is to say a problem is considered for itsdependencies …

Emissions Corridors Preserving The Atlantic Ocean Thermohaline Circulation, K. Zickfeld, T. Bruckner Jul 2002

Emissions Corridors Preserving The Atlantic Ocean Thermohaline Circulation, K. Zickfeld, T. Bruckner

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) transports large amounts of heat northward, acting as a heatingsystem for the northern North Atlantic and north-western Europe. Paleo-reconstructions and a large numberof model simulations have shown the THC to be stable only within certain limits beyond which the circulationshuts down. In this paper we derive emission corridors for the 21st century preserving the Atlanticthermohaline circulation. To this end a multi-gas reduced-form climate model has been coupled to a dynamicfour-box model of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation. Both models allow for the relevant uncertainties (i.e.,climate and hydrological sensitivity) to be taken into account. The emission corridors …

Improving The Model Development Cycle By Automatic Configuration Of Modelling Tools, K. De Jong, C. G. Wesseling, D. Karssenberg Jul 2002

Improving The Model Development Cycle By Automatic Configuration Of Modelling Tools, K. De Jong, C. G. Wesseling, D. Karssenberg

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Model development is a difficult and timely process involving various steps to create, check and improve the model. Typically all kinds of software tools are used to facilitate this process. Central to model development is the model definition and we show that, apart from calculating model results, it can be used to tailor some of the tools used to the model at hand. This speeds up model development and might lead to better models.

Classifying Environmental System Situations By Means Of Case-Based Reasoning: A Comparative Study, Héctor Núñez, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Ulises Cortés, Quim Comas, Montse Martínez, Manel Poch Jul 2002

Classifying Environmental System Situations By Means Of Case-Based Reasoning: A Comparative Study, Héctor Núñez, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Ulises Cortés, Quim Comas, Montse Martínez, Manel Poch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The step of identifying to which class of operational situation belongs the current Environmental System situation is a key element to build successful Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS). Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a good technique to solve new problems based in previous experience. Main assumption in CBR relies in the hypothesis that similar problems should have similar solutions. When working with labelled cases, the retrieval step in CBR cycle can be seen as a classification task. The new cases will be labelled (classified) with the label (class) of the most similar case retrieved from the Case Base. In Environmental Systems, …

The Streames Project: Linking Heuristic And Empirical Knowledge Into An Expert System To Assess Stream Managers, Joaquim Comas, Esther Llorens, Manel Poch, G. Markakis, T. Battin, S. Gafny, E. Maneux, E. Martí, M. Morais, M. A. Puig, M. Pusch, J. L. Riera, F. Sabater, A. G. Solimini, P. Vervier

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The increase in stream nutrient loads from anthropogenic sources has become a serious problem, especially in developed regions. Humans affect streams by modifying the landscape in ways that increase the transport of nutrients to surface waters, by directly dumping urban or industrial sewage into the stream, or by modifying streams in ways that reduce their ability to respond to increased nutrient loads. In Mediterranean regions these problems are compounded by the scarcity of water. The decision-making processes involved in water quality management require extensive human expertise or extensive computation with large data sets. In this sense, the STREAMES project aims …

An Adaptive Framework For Ecological Assessment And Management, David A. Mauriello, Richard A. Park Jul 2002

An Adaptive Framework For Ecological Assessment And Management, David A. Mauriello, Richard A. Park

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper, we present a conceptual framework for integrating ecological models into a process for management of complex ecological systems. This conceptual framework, that we call Adaptive Ecological Risk Analysis, is an iterative process based upon ecological modeling, the development and implementation of management alternatives, and the evaluation of their effectiveness. Adaptive Ecological Risk Analysis depends heavily on the use of ecological models to perform both prospective and retrospective risk assessments and to analyze the outcomes of alternative management strategies. In order to illustrate the use of Adaptive Ecological Risk Analysis, we use the AQUATOX simulation model to examine …

Lean Interfaces For Integrated Catchment Management Models: Rapid Development Using Icms, S. M. Cuddy, R. A. Letcher, M. B. Reed Jul 2002

Lean Interfaces For Integrated Catchment Management Models: Rapid Development Using Icms, S. M. Cuddy, R. A. Letcher, M. B. Reed

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A move towards the development of lean, issue-focused interfaces is being explored to provide arapid delivery mechanism to transfer catchment science to managers and custodians. This approach is a moveaway from development of large decision support systems which attempt to anticipate a myriad ofmanagement questions. It relies on having a modelling system which supports the rapid building andintegration of catchment models, and is independent of the interface. ICMS (Interactive ComponentModelling System) is a PC-based software tool which has been developed with this in mind. The kernel ofthe ICMS system, ICMSBuilder, provides the modeller’s view of the world, on top of …

Environmental Foresight And Structural Change, M. B. Beck Jul 2002

Environmental Foresight And Structural Change, M. B. Beck

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Policy-makers and the public, it has famously been said [Brooks, 1986], are more interested in the possibility of non-linear dislocations and surprises in the behavior of the environment than in smooth extrapolations of current trends. How indeed should we design our models to generate environmental foresight, to detect, in particular, threats to our environment lying “just beyond the horizon”? In facing this prospect of potentially profound dislocations in behavior, the problem is that the number of state variables in the model, whether they interact, how they interact, and the form of their interactions, may be evolving over time. What may …

On A Gis Based Hydrological Model For Flow And Contamination Transport In Lake Kinneret Watershed, A. Ostfeld, A. Pries

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes the efforts and current achievements of developing a GIS based hydrologicalmodel for flow and contaminants transport within Lake Kinneret watershed. The proposed model is built ofhydrological “input-output” physical response blocks for routing rainfall-runoff water quantity and quality insub-watersheds, coupled further with a delineated GIS database. An illustrative example of the modelcapabilities is demonstrated.

Short Term River Flood Forecasting With Neural Networks, R. García-Bartual Jul 2002

Short Term River Flood Forecasting With Neural Networks, R. García-Bartual

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper reports results obtained using artificial neural networks (ANN) models for shortterm river flow forecasting under heavy rain storms, in the upper Serpis river basin (460 km2), with the outlet in Beniarrés reservoir (29 hm3 ). The system is monitored by 6 raingauges, providing 5-min rainfall intensities, while reservoir inflows are derived from depth measurements in the reservoir every half hour and realtime data from controlled discharges in the spillway. In order to produce 1, 2 and 3 hours forecasts, the model makes use of the distributed rainfall information, together with observed discharges in the preceding hours. Several ANN …

An Architecture For Modelling Individual Behaviour And Landscape Scale Outcomes In An Intelligent Agent-Based Simulation Of Environmental Management, L. J. Smith, R. Itami, I. D. Bishop Jul 2002

An Architecture For Modelling Individual Behaviour And Landscape Scale Outcomes In An Intelligent Agent-Based Simulation Of Environmental Management, L. J. Smith, R. Itami, I. D. Bishop

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This work describes a software architecture that couples intelligent agent technology with Geographic Information System (GIS). The agents simulate individual behaviour, while GIS-based simulation models represent the landscape that is observed and acted upon by the agents. Our motivation in developing the software is to assist in understanding and resolving complex, semistructured, environmental management problems, where multiple actors participate in decision-making and management. Like real stakeholders, agents are individuals and have different knowledge and interests. The agents’ design is based upon the Belief, Desire, and Intention (BDI) theory of intelligent agents and implemented in Visual Basic. Agents are initialised with …

Integrating Stakeholder Imagination With Scientific Theory: A Case Study Of Lake Lanier, Usa, O. O. Osidele, M. B. Beck Jul 2002

Integrating Stakeholder Imagination With Scientific Theory: A Case Study Of Lake Lanier, Usa, O. O. Osidele, M. B. Beck

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present a framework for computational analysis of reachable futures, centred on the analysisof uncertainty, in which stakeholder participation is integral to generating environmental foresight. In ourcase study, we examine the long-term ecological behaviour of Lake Lanier, Georgia, south-eastern USA. Weelicit stakeholders' fears and desires for the future state of the reservoir during a foresight workshop session, from which we encode long-term behaviour definitions (scenarios) for the analysis. A generalised ecologicalmodel provides the mechanism for propagating a set of uncertain input factors – namely, process parameters, initial conditions, and forcing functions – into the future. We employ three sampling-based methods foridentifying and …

Data Frameworks For Environmental Modelling, R. M. Argent, C. Maul, T. Krämerkämper Jul 2002

Data Frameworks For Environmental Modelling, R. M. Argent, C. Maul, T. Krämerkämper

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Developers of environmental modelling software are adopting modern software engineering approaches that use a combination of model components to provide appropriate modelling services. One of the key issues in this development is easy and reliable storage, exchange and display of data, often using distributed sources and tools. This, in turn, requires standard methods for providing and describing data. Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a set of standards and protocols that has been adopted by commerce and industry for exchanging and displaying data, and it also provides a metadata standard that can be used to specify interfaces and data requirements for …

Dynamics Of The Surface Water Circulation Between A River And Fishponds In A Sub-Mountain Area, Maria Anna Szumiec, Danuta Augustyn

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Assessment of river-fishpond surface water circulation is recognised as to be of critical importancein the Upper Vistula river catchment (southern Poland). The Vistula river is characterised by a high flow inspring, partly retained in numerous fishponds, and a low flow in autumn. Evaluation of the water circulationcycle is based on an equation of pond water balance. Water balance components include regulated inflow tothe ponds and regulated outflow from the ponds, precipitation, and evaporation. Results have been obtainedduring four-year monitoring period. Waters circulation between the ponds and the river has been computedfor the annual hydrological cycle and for three periods; November …
