The Impact Of Inflation On The Developing Economy: The Brazilian Case, Richard B. Wirthlin

The effects of inflation in Brazil are given as an example of third-world economies around the globe. Wirthlin places Brazil's largest economic problem-that of inflation-in the larger context of the country's political, geographic, demographic, and economic situation. Then he discusses how inflation can cause inequality and political instability. He also examines the role insufficient food supplies, the political structure, and an aversion to foreign capital have had on rising prices. Along with offering several solutions to these problems, the author calls for further attention to the problems facing third-world economies.

Through their contacts with the Utes and other local tribes the Mormon people became aware of the presence of the Hopis, Navahos and Zunis soon after their arrival in the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Their first actual contact with the Navahos occurred in connection with their Elk Mountain Indian Mission near what is now Moab, Utah, in 1855. During that same year another Indian mission was established in the Cedar City area called the Southern Indian Mission. As president of this mission in 1858, Jacob Hamblin led the first exploring-missionary party to the Hopi villages. Succeeding visits to …

Heber J. Grant reflected, both consciously and unconsciously, a Mormon agrarian background and ideology. His moral fervor and idealism was in the tradition of his father, Jedediah Morgan Grant, the leading figure of the 1856 "Mormon Reformation." Grant's belief in self-sufficiency, thrift, solvency, and laissez faire government reflected the frontier environment and his business training; however, the dominant force of his life was the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially after he was appointed an Apostle and later President of that organization. He attended Taylorsville public schools, the University of Utah, Columbia University in New Yourk and graduated from the University of California with his Ph.D. degree. Joseph Smith, prophet and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated that when he was fourteen years old he had received a visitation from two members of the Godhead: the Father and the Son. He was alone when he went into the woods to pray, and was therefore the only witness to the manifestation of these personages. He also declared that when he was seventeen years old he was visited by an angel named Moroni. Again he was without witnesses. The purpose of this study was to determine whether LDS sophomore and junior seminary students have significant differences of concern about concepts and attitudes contained in each of the thirty-five Directional Objectives which guide the curriculum of the Seminary System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The study involved LDS Seminary students from the Burley, Idaho; Arimo, Idaho and Ogden (Weber) Utah seminaries, and consisted of 164 sophomore and 109 junior students.

I selected this topic in 1962 primarily from curiosity to discover the facts concerning present day polygamy in Utah, allegedly still abundant. Perhaps the motivation may be described as an amateur detective's zeal. Considerable material seemed to be available about polygamy in Utah before 1890, when the practice was mostly abandoned by the Mormon people, but, apparently, little has been written on this subject covering the period since that date. It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Polymorphs are crystalline substances composed of the same element but with different atomic configurations and thus very different physical properties. Dr. H. Tracy Hall, the first scientist to successfully produce diamonds from graphite, explains how pressure and heat can be applied, either individually or combined, to a substance to produce a new polymorphous substance. This process has resulted in the commercial diamond business and may in the future yield other profitable and beneficial industries and products.

Sickness, hunger, poverty, and natural disasters, combined with the threat of attacks from the native Indians, made life for these Latter-day Saints difficult. The author tells the stories of these Saints as they tried to make a home for themselves in Mexico during the time period 1885 to 1900.

Brodie, critic of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of its founder Joseph Smith, has suggested that one of Mormonism's unique doctrines, baptism for the dead, originated not from divine revelation, but from the Dunkers, or Brethren, of Pennsylvania. A group led by Conrad Bessial known as the Ephrata Community broke off from the main body of the Brethren. This group's doctrines and practices differed from the main body of the Brethren, and for some years they practiced baptisms in behalf of their deceased loved ones. This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined …

Anthropology literally means "the study of man." However, does anthropology live up to its name? Although traditional anthropological methods worked in the study of societies in the past, traditional anthropology doesn't work as well in the study of modern complex societies. The author cites his own experience studying peoples in Utah, Venezuela, and Vietnam to highlight the problems with a traditional approach. The author feels that in order to have a truly comprehensive, unified, and systematic study of man, anthropology needs to unite with other similar scientific disciplines.

The welfare plan of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, initiated during the Great Depression, was praised by conservatives as an effective New Deal protest and criticized by liberals as a step backward. The Church's philosophy of providing work relief as opposed to a dole is based in its doctrines and statements from early leaders. Early work relief programs were adopted in local congregations starting in 1931, but when the federal government began to decrease its direct relief programs, church leaders increased church-wide work relief programs. The major purposes of this study have been (1) to define and coordinate principles and policies for religious education in Pacific elementary and secondary schools that are operated by the Pacific Board of Education of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and (2) to provide a manual of instructions for administrators and teachers which will help them attain the objectives outlined in this study.
Religious education in the Pacific Schools is an integral part of the entire curriculum, receiving emphasis in religion classes. The Church Seminary system, in contrast, is supplemental to public secular education.

The East India Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially opened in 1851, with the arrival of Elder Joseph Richards from England. He baptized several people, the most important of whom were James Patric Meik and his family, Maurice White, and Matthew McCune and his family. The Meiks and the McCunes contributed a great deal of service to the Church in Calcutta and Rangoon. Both of these families eventaully immigrated to Utah. Elder Richards left Calcutta after a few months there and before his return some months later, was preceeded by Elder William Willes. Willes …

The purpose of this study was to recognize the position of slavery as it pertained especially to the Negro in the Territory of Utah from 1847 to 1865, and the position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints toward Indian slavery found in those tribes living within the boundary of the Utah Territory. Negro slavery was accepted and tolerated by the Latter-day Saints even though there were but few Negroes in the Territory. These were brought in by a few southern Saints.

This study is concerned with the origin and original meaning of sacrificial blood offerings as practiced by the ancient Israelite people and their progenitors. "Modern" scriptural sources including the Pearl of Great Price, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants are used along with the Bible as the basic reference material.
