Helminth Parasites Of Dogs In Two Central Utah Communities, Lari Michael Norton Cowgill Aug 1973

Helminth Parasites Of Dogs In Two Central Utah Communities, Lari Michael Norton Cowgill

Theses and Dissertations

Parasitic helminths probably consitute one of the most important groups of disease agents in dogs. In the Southern and Central United States dogs are often fatally infected with the canine esophageal worm, Spirocerca lupi, and the ca nine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis. Cestodes which can limit the growth of a dog are found throughout the United States.

Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish Aug 1973

Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish

Theses and Dissertations

The secretion of two hormones with identical function by the thyroid gland has been questioned, What is the relationship between these two hormones? Why does the thyroid secrete two hormones when either one can provide for all the activity of the thyroid (Greer, 1972). Little work has been done on the relationship between the two hormones. There is some evidence showing that thyroxine (T4) is deiodinated to triiouothyronine (T3) at the tissue level in mammals. Chambers (1970) found that there was a negative interaction between T4 and T3 when pharmacologic doses were administered to the rat. The present study was …

Habitat And Time Utilization Of A Pair Of Nesting Sharp-Shinned Hawks (Accipiter Striatus Velox) : A Telemetry Study, Joseph Belnap Platt Jul 1973

Habitat And Time Utilization Of A Pair Of Nesting Sharp-Shinned Hawks (Accipiter Striatus Velox) : A Telemetry Study, Joseph Belnap Platt

Theses and Dissertations

Telemetric observations were conducted on a pair of Sharp-Shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus velox) nesting in Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah in 1972. The movements of both adults were monitored from the time their eggs hatched in late June until they left the study area in early August, fourty-two days later. A transmitter was also attached to one of the young at the time of fledging. The adult's main hunting area was a single plant community located 1600 meters from the nest. The male performed the majority of the foraging while the female spent the greatest part of her time at the …

On The Taxonomic Status Of Platypodidae And Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood Jun 1973

On The Taxonomic Status Of Platypodidae And Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist

The reduction of Platypodidae and Scolytidae to subfamilies of Curculionidae by certain recent authors is questioned. Several fundamentally important anatomical characters that could not possibly have been derived from Curculionidae are cited. Platypodidae (including Coptonotidae) is recognized provisionally as a derivative of Scolytidae; Scolytidae, with subfamilies Hylesininae and Scolytinae (including Ipinae), is also recognized as a family. Protoplatypus, new genus, for P. vetulus, n. sp., a primitive platypodid from New Guinea, and Protohylastes, new genus, for Pr. annosus, n. sp., a primitive scolytid from Queensland, are described.

An Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Huntington Canyon, Utah, Lorin E. Squires, Samuel R. Rushforth, Carol J. Endsley Jun 1973

An Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Huntington Canyon, Utah, Lorin E. Squires, Samuel R. Rushforth, Carol J. Endsley

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A quantitative and ecological study of the algae of Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. Net plankton, nannoplankton, periphyton, and visible attached algae were studied. Certain physical and chemical parameters in the waters of Huntington Creek and a small pond along its course were also measured.

Huntington Creek contains a wide diversity of genera and species of algae. Diatoms are the main constituent of the flora of this stream throughout the year. Hydrurus foetidus is prevalent in Huntington Creek from late winter to early summer, and filamentous blue green algae abound in the …

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier May 1973

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The decade of the 1930's was a difficult time for most Americans with the depression blighting untold families and individuals. The Swiss Americans, like other ethnic groups, had an additional cause for concern inasmuch as the decade was characterized by isolationism in foreign relations and a wave of nativism at home. The introduction of immigration quotas in the 1920's indicated that the United States prepared itself to put obstacles in the way of free access to the country. Due to the depression the quotas were not even used up by most European countries. The "distant magnet" had lost much of …

Little Drum Mountains, An Early Tertiary Shoshonitic Volcanic Center In Millard County, Utah, Stephen H. Leedom Apr 1973

Little Drum Mountains, An Early Tertiary Shoshonitic Volcanic Center In Millard County, Utah, Stephen H. Leedom

Theses and Dissertations

The Little Drum Mountains represent a deeply eroded Eocene-Oligocene volcano, consisting of a vent complex which erupted mafic flows and flow breccias, accompanied by lahars. Flows are dominated by members of the shoshonite suite and contain up to 3.95 percent K2O, mainly occult in K-rich glass, with K2O/Na2O ratios greater than 1.0. In a few interbedded flows, apparently of the calc-alkaline series, pyroxene with varying amounts of plagioclase in a fine-grained groundmass of plagioclase, mafic minerals, and interstitial glass. An ash-flow tuff of the Oligocene Needles Range Formation unconformably overlies the volcanic sequence. Contemporaneous …

Measurement And Analysis Of Data In Turbulent And Transition Regions Of Two-Phase Flow, Akula Venkatram Apr 1973

Measurement And Analysis Of Data In Turbulent And Transition Regions Of Two-Phase Flow, Akula Venkatram

Theses and Dissertations

The main aim of the project was to examine the possibility of using the hot wire anemometer to detect particles in a fluid. It was hoped that the presence of the particles would affect the autocorrelation plot and the energy spectrum of the velocities measured in the fluid.

Distribution And Relationships Of Utah Brome Grasses In Western North America, Jerry B. Anderson Apr 1973

Distribution And Relationships Of Utah Brome Grasses In Western North America, Jerry B. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

A considerable amount of study material has beccme available since the revision of the genus in 1900 by Shear, and the revision of the section Bromopsis in 1952 by Wagnon. A number of cytological studies have been done in recent years; and Wagnon's work pointed out the need for a comprehensive study of the entire genus. This study is a taxonomic revision of the Genus Bromus for the State of Utah, and contains illustrations and descriptions of the species; synonomy; distribution maps; and discussions of many of the important aspects of the economics, ecology, and historical treatment. I have recognized …

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier Feb 1973

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On Independence Day 1927, on the occa sion of the Swiss Singing Festival, a group of Swiss Americans living in the Chicago area decided to found a historical society. The idea had been in the air, so to speak. For some time , persons of different background and living in different parts of the country had been working diligently in that direction by encouraging existing Swis s societies to add another dimension to their activities and by gathering materials about "famous Swiss." They were annoyed and concerned "by the fact that every outstanding person of Swiss origin was claimed by …

The History Of Medical Relations Between Switzerland And The Usa, Erwin H. Ackerknecht Feb 1973

The History Of Medical Relations Between Switzerland And The Usa, Erwin H. Ackerknecht

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

When in a symposium concerning the medical relations of Switzerland to other countries reports are given on the relations of Swiss medicine to German, French, Italian, English and Austrian medicine, the reasons are obvious. But it might be at first sight surprising that the USA are added to this traditional list of neighbors. This surprise is partly a consequence of outdated technological and geographical thought. Actually, through the airplane, New York is as close to Zurich as by railroad are Hamburg or Paris. We should become conscious of this new situation. But partly doubts remain legitimate. Have the relations between …
