The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson Jan 1973

The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations

The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.

The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …

Zion's Camp, Wilburn D. Talbot Jan 1973

Zion's Camp, Wilburn D. Talbot

Theses and Dissertations

In 1831, Jackson County, Missouri, was designated as a place of refuge for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Attempts to establish permanent residence in their Zion ended in bloodshed and violence. An army was raised to go to the aid of those cast out of their homes. This thesis pays particular attention to the recruiting of the army and the gathering of money and provisions, the trek to Missouri, and the interaction of those promoting and opposing the camp.

The trek from Kirtland, Ohio, to Jackson County, Missouri, revealed frustrations, hardships, strengths, weaknesses, and …

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders Jan 1973

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders

Theses and Dissertations

During the 19th Century, the Mississippi River was the chief commercial highway in the United States. But for two impediments, the Upper and Lower (Des Moines) Rapids, its entire course of 2400 miles would have offered an untroubled thoroughfare to watercraft.

The federal government, as well as private concerns, attempted throughout the better part of that century to alleviate the river of its barriers and to develop its rapids as a source of power. Those attempts were disappointingly unsuccessful, however, and not until the advent of the 20th Century, when the nation had matured both economically and technologically, was the …

Alexander William Doniphan, The Forgotten Man From Missouri, Gregory P. Maynard Jan 1973

Alexander William Doniphan, The Forgotten Man From Missouri, Gregory P. Maynard

Theses and Dissertations

Few men on the Missouri frontier in the nineteenth century exemplified the quality of character, integrity, as well as did Alexander William Doniphan. Whether in his capacity as a lawyer, soldier, legislator or friend, he remained steadfast to his beliefs and principles, though often in the minority.
Several books have been written about Doniphan's military experiences during the Mexican War. But surprisingly this is the only part of his life which so far has been reported in great detail. The other aspects of his career have been treated only in a sketchy manner. It is therefore the purpose of this …

J. Bracken Lee And Utah Public Education, Elwin Lee Reynolds Jan 1973

J. Bracken Lee And Utah Public Education, Elwin Lee Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the two gubernatorial terms of J. Bracken Lee, Governor of Utah 1948-1956, and the effect he had on education during these years. Lee has been accused by his detractors of being opposed to education. He has been defended by his supporters as being a friend whose only desire was to have education operated on a sound fiscal basis. During his two terms as governor he was almost constantly involved in some dispute with the education people in the state and was frequently on the defensive against anti-education charges.

The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra

Theses and Dissertations

Indian ricegrass at the Desert Range Experiment Station forty-seven miles west of Milford, Utah, is damaged by the larvae of Coenchroa illibella, Diatrae sp. and Typoceris ceraticornis, the latter being the most destructive. The biology of the insects and the extent of damage inflicted are discussed. Uninfested plants produced more new stems than infested plants. Plants having a basal diameter of 4 to 6.9 cm and 7 to 9.9 cm were the most frequently infested and, consequently, the most severely damaged.

Two male specimens of the genus Orchopeas constitute the first record of this genus in South America and records of species of the …

Laboratory Rearing, Development And Cytogenetics Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Robert Francis Allen Aug 1972

Laboratory Rearing, Development And Cytogenetics Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Robert Francis Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Vector control is fundamental to the suppression and/or eradication of many endemic and epidemic diseases affecting man. The discovery and widespread application of insecticides in vector control programs focused early attention on studies revealing ecological and behavioral characteristics of arthropod vectors. As a consequence of this emphasis, few attempts were made to investigate arthropod cytogenetics. However, recent recognition of the deleterious effects of highly persistent insecticides on the environment and the development of insecticide resistance by vectors of human disease have established the importance of cytogenetics as a base on which programs for control of vector populations may be built …

Helminths Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Great Basin And Upper Colorado Plateau Of Utah, Richard Carlyle Pearce Jul 1972

Helminths Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Great Basin And Upper Colorado Plateau Of Utah, Richard Carlyle Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

This study was prompted by the scarcity of information on helminths in Sceloporus lizards of Utah. It reports these worms and includes references to parasites of reptiles in the appendix. A microscopic examination of the coelom, mesenteries, liver, lungs, esophagus, stomach, and intestines of 55 lizards was made, but helminths were recovered only from stomachs and intestines. Examination of S. graciosus yielded Opchoristica scelopori, a cestode found in the duodenum, and Cyrtosomum penneri, C. readi, and C. heynemani, three nematodes of the cecum. The latter two are new nematodes for this host species. Examination of S. undulatus yielded three new …

A New Species Of Gymnodamaeus From Colorado (Acarina: Cryptostigmata, Gymnodamaeidae), Tyler A. Woolley

Great Basin Naturalist

The taxonomic history of the genus Gymnodamaeus is reviewed for North American species. A new species, Gymnodamaeus chalazionus, is described from Colorado and compared with species from both the western and eastern U.S. Among other features, the new species differs from G. veriornatus Higgins, 1961, in the shorter interlamellar hairs and the surface structure of the notogaster and genital plates. The new species is also compared with G. quadricaudatus Jacot, 1937, G. pearsei and minor Banks, 1947; with G. gildersleeveae and ornatus Hammer 1952, from Canada, and with G. elegantulus Hammer, 1958, from South America. Twelve scanning electron micrographs are …

The Hyobranchium And Throat Myology Of The Adult Ambystomidae Of The United States And Northern Mexico, John E. Krogh, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The 16 species and subspecies of the Ambystomidae of the United States are placed into six groups according to their throat morphology as follows: The Dicamptodon group, the Rhyacotriton group, the A. Annulatum–A. cingulatum group, the A. gracile-A. jeffersonianum-A. mabeei-A. macrodactylum-A. maculatum group, the A. talpoideum group, the A. opacum-A. texanum group, and the A. rosaceum-A. t. tigrinum-A. t. melanostictum-A. t. nebulosum group. Dicamptodon appears to be the most primitive group and Rhyacotriton the most specialized. Based on the morphology of the throat region it is suggested that A. rosaceum be placed in the tiger salamander group as a subspecies …

The study area, located near Clay Point, Garfield County, Utah, is south of the Henry Mountains. The site is relatively undisturbed containing many well preserved specimens. This study constitutes the first detailed study of fossil coniferous woods of the Morrison Formation. Although this formation contains abundant petrified wood, its floral composition has been virtually unknown. Three genera have been identified in this study: Protopiceoxylon Gothan, Mesembrioxylon Seward, and Taxaceoxylon (Unger) Krausel. Protopiceoxylon has only been …

Vegetation Changes Following Fire In The Pinyon-Juniper Type Of West Central Utah, Milo Arnel Barney May 1972

Vegetation Changes Following Fire In The Pinyon-Juniper Type Of West Central Utah, Milo Arnel Barney

Theses and Dissertations

A total of 28 burn areas, that varied in age from 3-100+- years, were analyzed in a study of succession following fire, in the pin yon-juniper woodlands of west central Utah. Data were collected by means of the line-point and quadrat methods. These data were subjected to a multiple regression analysis. Canopy cover, basal area (sq. ft./acre) and density (trees/acre) of juniper were highly correlated with age of burn. Percentage dead sagebrush was found to be positively correlated with density of junipers. The stages of succession following fire began with weedy annuals, that reached a peak within 3-4 years. Juniper …

The Dynamic Characteristics Of A Beam Whose Material Is Represented By A Three-Parameter Viscoelastic Solid, Vishnurao K. Devkar

Theses and Dissertations

Man observes many phenomena occurring in nature which he can use to his benefit. He observes how physical quantities vary as a function of their environment in order to predict how these variations will affect a system he wishes to design. For this purpose, he must establish a model that is representative of the relation between those physical quantities and certain environments to which they are subjected.

Fossil Palm Materials From The Tertiary Dipping Vat Formation Of Central Utah, William D. Tidwell, David A. Medlyn, Gregory F. Thayn Mar 1972

Fossil Palm Materials From The Tertiary Dipping Vat Formation Of Central Utah, William D. Tidwell, David A. Medlyn, Gregory F. Thayn

Great Basin Naturalist

The Rhizopalmoxylon (petrified palm roots) species from the hills west of Redmond, Utah were originally reported as from the Jurassic Arapien Shale. However, the Utah State Geologic Map upon which this was largely based is erroneous, and the strata containing the palm roots are in the Tertiary Dipping Vat Formation, rather than in the Jurassic Arapien Shale. From the palm roots previously reported, three new species have been identified: Rhizopalmoxylon behuninii, R. blackii, and R. scottii.

Specimens of the new species, Palmoxylon gustavesonii, were collected from the Dipping Vat Formation east and south of Redmond. This formation unconformably overlies the …

Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Three desert Artemisia tridentata communities in Rush Valley, Utah were trapped for small rodents during the summer of 1970 in a mark-recapture study. Population densities were estimated using several indices for each population category. Animals were weighed and rodent biomass calculated for each species throughout the summer. Populations, biomass, and other data were then analyzed to gain a better understanding of A. tridentata community types of the Great Basin. Peromyscus maniculatus, Eutamias minimus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis were common to area 1. Peromyscus maniculatus, E. minimus, and Perognathus parvus were common to areas 2 and 3. The peak estimated standing crops …
