Contributions To The Concepts Of Reproductive Cycles And The Systematics Of The Scalaris Group Of The Lizard Genus Sceloporus, Hobart M. Smith, William P. Hall Jun 1974

Contributions To The Concepts Of Reproductive Cycles And The Systematics Of The Scalaris Group Of The Lizard Genus Sceloporus, Hobart M. Smith, William P. Hall

Great Basin Naturalist

The concept of parity type is proposed as a criterion of relationship among members of the Sceloporus aeneus–scalaris complex, with members of S. aeneus being regarded as viviparous and those of S. scalaris, as oviparous. The viviparous S. goldmani is regarded as a relative of S. aeneus, and S. a. subniger is not regarded as intermediate between S. scalaris and S. aeneus. The proposal by Davis and Smith that S. a. aeneus is oviparous and specifically distinct (as S. aeneus) from S. a. bicanthalis (as S. bicanthalis) is rejected. S. aeneus is hypothesized to have a biennial reproductive …

Ecological Aspects Of Cercocarpus Montanus Raf. Communities In Central Utah, David Lee Anderson May 1974

Ecological Aspects Of Cercocarpus Montanus Raf. Communities In Central Utah, David Lee Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Ecological and environmental aspects relating to Cercocarpus montanus Raf. Communities were investigated. Twenty study sites were sampled and described. All factors were then analyzed utilizing statistical methods. Signigicantly correlated factors to C. montanus parameters (i.e., frequency, density, cover, height) were: positive correlation--percent clay, percent clay-silt, percent litter cover, and total soluble salts in soil; negative correlation--percent silt-sand, percent sand, soil pH; exposed surface rock, Amelanchier alnifolia cover, Gotierrezia sarothrae cover and altitude. Several individual factors were singled out as being of importance in C. montanus communities; howerver, it was shown that a combination of factors was most important in determining …

Trace Metal Analysis Of Hair By Charged Particle X-Ray Fluorescence, George M. Allison Apr 1974

Trace Metal Analysis Of Hair By Charged Particle X-Ray Fluorescence, George M. Allison

Theses and Dissertations

A method for the trace element analysis of hair by charged particle X-ray fluorescence is presented. The validity of the method is shown by the analysis of NBS SRM 1577--Bovine Liver, obtained from the National Bureau of Standards. Excellent correlation is obtained between results from the analysis by the X-ray method and those certified by NBS. Hair samples are ashed by a low temperature oxidation process and analyzed by the X-ray method. The results from the analysis by the X-ray method are compared to those obtained from the analysis of the same hair samples by atomic absorption. Good correlation is …

Studies On The Tolerance Of Aquatic Insects To Low Oxygen Concentrations, Arden R. Gaufin, Robert Clubb, Robert Newell Mar 1974

Studies On The Tolerance Of Aquatic Insects To Low Oxygen Concentrations, Arden R. Gaufin, Robert Clubb, Robert Newell

Great Basin Naturalist

Acute, short-term (96-hour) tests were conducted to determine the relative sensitivity of low oxygen concentrations to 20 species of aquatic insects. In addition, the longer-term effects of low oxygen levels on the survival, molting, growth, and emergence of 21 species were studied. This paper encompasses work conducted at the University of Montana Biological Station from 1968 to 1970 and at the University of Utah from 1966 to 1972.

An evaluation of the average minimum dissolved-oxygen requirements of the different groups of aquatic insects tested indicates that the mayflies are the most sensitive, that the stoneflies are next, and that the …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to analyze and compare the influence of secular educational philosophy upon the curriculum of the seminaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In order to do this it was necessary to review and record the development of secular educational philosophy and curriculum. This was followed by writing the development of the educational philosophy and New Testament curriculum of the seminaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Next a comparison was made of the influence of the secular philosophies and curricula upon the religious educational philosophy and the New …

A Q-Sort Comparison Between Cultural Expectations Of Chinese And Cultural Perceptions Of Returned Latter-Day Saint Missionaries From The United States Who Had Been Assigned To Chinese Missions, Gary G. Y. Chu Jan 1974

A Q-Sort Comparison Between Cultural Expectations Of Chinese And Cultural Perceptions Of Returned Latter-Day Saint Missionaries From The United States Who Had Been Assigned To Chinese Missions, Gary G. Y. Chu

Theses and Dissertations

This project was designed to generate information relative to a specific intercultural communication situation, especially directed toward diversity between cultural expectation and performance in the following areas: first, Chinese expectation of American Latter-day Saint missionaries' performance in Chinese contexts; and second, performance of the missionaries, as reflected by their knowledge of proper conduct in Chinese contexts at the end of their missions.

Using Q-card sorting procedures and t-test analysis, an analytically developed instrument consisting of seventy statements grouped in six behavior categories was applied in the specific areas. Twenty-nine of the seventy statements showed significant diversity. Four of the hypothesized …

The Relevance And Effectiveness Of Four Book Of Mormon Prophets And Their Teachings, David Earl Perry Jan 1974

The Relevance And Effectiveness Of Four Book Of Mormon Prophets And Their Teachings, David Earl Perry

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought answers to two major questions regarding the Book of Mormon prophets: first, did a prophet's unique personality cause him to be significantly qualified and effective in coping with the problems of his ministry; and second, were a prophet's teachings directly relevant to his problems, assisting him to be effective in fulfilling his assignments. Six minor hypotheses were used to gather data regarding the four representative prophets chosen: Lehi, Nephi, Alma the Younger, and Mormon. The teachings studied were limited to those which reached the ears of a prophet's contemporaries, and were further limited to those which were …

Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott Jan 1974

Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott

Theses and Dissertations

America has been involved in seven major wars, but Mormonism's involvement in these wars has evaded scholarly attention. This has been unfortunate because, for the most part, individual Mormon leaders have taken very definite stands in relation to these struggles, and accompanying these stands have been very definite goals for the outcome of these wars. This, in turn, has prompted many of these LDS leaders to view the wars from a religious perspective.

This transcending religiosity combined the classical Christian wartime positions of the "just" and "righteous" war into one category. The third position however, pacifism, was also utilized during …

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake Jan 1974

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis depicts in a visual format the settlement geography of early Utah.

Several topics in Utah's historical geography were mapped by conventional cartographic techniques to give an overview of processes and patterns of settlement.

This thesis points to the utility of maps in portraying information concerning settlement activity. It indicates that visual correlations enable the student to better understand settlement through spatial relationships.

Of special interest are the use of color maps, and the creation of physical relief impressions by photographically screening a raised relief map of Utah.

The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper Jan 1974

The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper

Theses and Dissertations

Irrigation has played an important part in the development of the Western States. Its beginnings have often been associated with the Mormon settlement in Utah. However, irrigation had its inception in the West long before the Mormons came to the Great Basin in 1847. The spatial extent of irrigation before this date included limited acreage in nearly every Western State.

Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …

A Study Of Some Textual Variations In The Book Of Mormon Comparing The Original And The Printer's Manuscripts And The 1830, The 1837, And The 1840 Editions, Stanley R. Larson Jan 1974

A Study Of Some Textual Variations In The Book Of Mormon Comparing The Original And The Printer's Manuscripts And The 1830, The 1837, And The 1840 Editions, Stanley R. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of textual variations in the two manuscripts and the first three editions of the Book of Mormon. Successive collations of each of these were made against the text of the first edition. From these collations some 427 specific textual variations were selected for inclusion in the thesis.

The research disclosed that some genuine corrections as well as editorial revisions were made by Joseph Smith in 1837 and 1840. However, it was also concluded that some alterations of the text arose from accidental causes.

The most significant contribution of this study was that both the Original …

A History Of The Nauvoo Legion In Illinois, John Sweeney Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Legion was a branch of the Illinois state militia, located in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. To obey the state military service requirement, provide adequate protection for themselves, and display loyalty to the state, the inhabitants of Nauvoo organized a militia within their city. Having received necessary state approval, the citizens designated their militia the "Nauvoo Legion," which functioned from February, 1841 to January, 1845, when the Legion charter was repealed by the state legislature.

Organized and staffed mainly by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Legion was considered by some opponents as a …

Scorpions Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho, Dorald M. Allred Dec 1973

Scorpions Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho, Dorald M. Allred

Great Basin Naturalist

During ecological studies in 1966 and 1967, 282 scorpions of Paruroctonus boreus (Girard) were collected in can pit-traps in 12 plant communities. The ideal habitat was in vegetated areas where the total ground cover was more than 85 percent, of which at least 60 percent was broad-leaf shrubs and 5 percent grasses. Populations of ants and spiders were highest where scorpions were most abundant. Scorpions were most active above ground during August, with about half as much activity during July. None were found prior to May or after September.

Ultrastructure Of Histochemically Localized Cholinesterases In Central And Peripheral Nervous Systems Of Two Insects: Periplaneta Americana L. And Acheta Domestica L, Clifford James Stratton Aug 1973

Ultrastructure Of Histochemically Localized Cholinesterases In Central And Peripheral Nervous Systems Of Two Insects: Periplaneta Americana L. And Acheta Domestica L, Clifford James Stratton

Theses and Dissertations

Cholinesterase (ChE) was histochemically localized by three methods in the sixth abdominal ganglion and the femur of crickets and cockroaches using light and electron microscopy. The light microscopy showed that ChE in insect femur could be readily demonstrated. The ultrastructural data showed enzyme activity: in ganglion - neural lamella, perineurium, axolemma, inside axons, along glia and at probable synapses; in peripheral nerves - in glial cells, sarcoplasmic reticulum, T-system, axolemma, sarcolemma and at neuromuscular junctions. All activity was inhibited with 10-4 eserine except in the neural lamella, suggesting cholinesterase at all of the above sites except the neural lamella where …
