Patriots And Protestant Dissenters: Early Religious Disestablishment In Revolutionary South Carolina, Nathan James Shull
Patriots And Protestant Dissenters: Early Religious Disestablishment In Revolutionary South Carolina, Nathan James Shull
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1778, the newly independent government of South Carolina broke with more than a century of precedent and disestablished the Church of England by enacting Article XXXVIII of its State Constitution. This thesis weaves together the interconnected stories of Patriots such as William Tennent, Christopher Gadsden, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Oliver Hart, Richard Furman, and William Henry Drayton, demonstrating how they converged on disestablishment. While the historiography has focused on one or another religious or political group, this thesis asserts that an array of South Carolinians from across the political spectrum coalesced around disestablishment as a pragmatic solution to a variety …

Addictive By Design: Can States Regulate Social Media Algorithms In The Face Of Free Speech Challenges?, Niamh Kathleen Keane
Addictive By Design: Can States Regulate Social Media Algorithms In The Face Of Free Speech Challenges?, Niamh Kathleen Keane
University of Miami Business Law Review
The foe we did not know, the stranger that stole the show. Social media once presented itself as a friendly way to connect with loved ones through shared pictures and catchy captions. Yet, it has since shown its true colors; intentionally addicting its users—for its own financial benefit—and showing no remorse doing so.
Entranced, users set off on a digital journey, veering down paths they never imagined . . . Today, children as young as eight years old are exposed to extremely harmful content such as medically unsupported dieting techniques, substance abuse, and dangerous, life-threatening social media “trends,” all of …
Originalism Chokes: The 2024 Trump Cases, Lawrence Rosenthal
Originalism Chokes: The 2024 Trump Cases, Lawrence Rosenthal
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
By 2024, a majority of the Justices of the Supreme Court had expressed the view that to be legitimate, constitutional adjudication must be based on the original meaning of the Constitution’s text. Anything else, these Justices have argued, is illegitimate judicial policymaking. Yet, in what were likely the two most critical and high-profile cases decided in 2024, the Court, including its avowedly originalist Members, made no use of originalism. In the first case, the Court faced the question whether a State could bar President Trump from running for President under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. In the second, the …
Stolen Art Tolling Rules: One View Of The (Stolen) Cathedral, Max Sterling
Stolen Art Tolling Rules: One View Of The (Stolen) Cathedral, Max Sterling
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
Disputes over stolen art frequently result in arduous, decades-long litigation. These disputes are emotionally and morally charged—one recurrent fact-pattern involves the descendants of European Jewish families suing an art collector or museum that now possesses art the Nazis stole during the Holocaust. But courts often decide stolen art cases based on rules about the tolling of statutes of limitations, not the merits of the disputes. Further, these tolling rules are unclear, inconsistent, and generally favor the bona fide purchaser of stolen art over the original owner. In the spirit of Calabresi and Melamed’s seminal work Property Rules, Liability Rules, and …
American Subsidy Law In A World Of Changed Weather Patterns, Robert Abrams
American Subsidy Law In A World Of Changed Weather Patterns, Robert Abrams
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This Article considers the extent to which governments in the United States, faced with escalating costs of weather-induced disasters, can refuse, restrict, or eliminate subsidies that encourage persons to locate or remain in harm’s way, without triggering the Takings Clause or other forms of liability. In most scenarios, the law unequivocally permits governments broad freedom to refuse, restrict, or cease subsidization.
The policy issues are more variegated—claims of reliance on subsidy-induced encouragement, or the plight of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, are not fatuous, nor is the risk of housing price instability if subsidies are withdrawn …

Which Place Governs A Placeless Place: Predicting Jurisdiction In The Metaverse, Morrease Leftwich
Which Place Governs A Placeless Place: Predicting Jurisdiction In The Metaverse, Morrease Leftwich
University of Miami Business Law Review
Oliver Wendell Holmes’s famous characterization of legal study as “prediction” takes on renewed significance as courts confront novel jurisdictional questions in blockchain cases, particularly as technological innovation accelerates and transforms the digital landscape. Among these developments is the metaverse, which combines blockchain financial technology with early visions of the internet as a distinct realm for social interaction.
Concrete problems already emerging in these immersive environments underscore the stakes: Platform‑engineered anonymity and scale make user‑to‑user harms effectively unpoliceable, what recent work calls the “veil of scale,” frustrating redress even when laws apply. Amid this difficulty in identifying bad actors, scholars have …

Despite multimodal therapy of surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy, glioblastoma patients show a dismal prognosis. Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) is overexpressed in glioblastoma, and its inhibition imparts an anti-tumor effect. Tumor cells invariably develop resistance to Temozolomide (TMZ), the standard chemotherapeutic agent for glioblastoma. However, the mechanistic role of PRMT5 in treatment-resistant glioblastoma is unknown. Patient-derived glioma stem-like cells (GSCs), treated with PRMT5 inhibitor (LLY-283) or transfected with PRMT5-target-specific siRNA, were treated with TMZ and subjected to in vitro functional and mechanistic studies. The intracranial mouse xenograft model was used to test the in vivo antitumor efficacy of combination …

Process Evaluation Of The Cheers Automated A1c Follow-Up Reminder System In Primary Care, Heather E. Lewis
Process Evaluation Of The Cheers Automated A1c Follow-Up Reminder System In Primary Care, Heather E. Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations & Projects
Background: Missed diabetes follow-up contributes to suboptimal glycemic control in primary care. Health record embedded reminder systems may improve continuity of care, but process evaluation is needed to understand real-world implementation (Bugge, 2024; Rathod et al., 2024).
Objective: To evaluate fidelity, workflow processes, and reach of the Cheers automated A1c reminder program among adults with type 2 diabetes in primary care.
Methods: This retrospective process evaluation used EHR data guided by the CDC Program Evaluation Framework (CDC, 2024). Measures included reminder delivery, follow-up completion, fidelity, and contextual factors.
Results: Of 72 eligible patients, 26 met success criteria (36.1%); 92.0% completed …
Bruen, Levels Of Generality, And Our Historical Tradition Of The Regulatory “Why”, Kevin K. Wang
Bruen, Levels Of Generality, And Our Historical Tradition Of The Regulatory “Why”, Kevin K. Wang
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
To pass Second Amendment muster under New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, gun laws encompassed by the Amendment’s plain text must align with our nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. A challenged law comports with history and tradition when it is sufficiently analogous to historical regulations along two metrics: “how” and “why” the regulation burdens the right to keep and bear arms.
One glaring ambiguity leftover from Bruen is the level of generality at which courts, when analogizing between laws past and present, must frame a regulation’s “how” and “why”—an issue of major consequence. Characterizing the “how” …
The Body At The Mercy Of The State: Sama V. Hannigan And The Fragmented Right To Refuse Across State Lines, Mallory Yeates
The Body At The Mercy Of The State: Sama V. Hannigan And The Fragmented Right To Refuse Across State Lines, Mallory Yeates
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Courts have long recognized bodily autonomy as a core constitutional value. Yet, doctrine governing reproductive healthcare tells a different story. Sama v. Hannigan exposes the fragility of the right to refuse medical treatment, particularly for incarcerated patients whose claims must survive the demanding standard of qualified immunity. When physicians removed Carrie Rahat Sama’s ovary despite her explicit refusal, her constitutional claim failed because no precedent with sufficiently similar facts had previously condemned such conduct. This case reveals how the “clearly established” prong of qualified immunity can foreclose redress for blatant violations of autonomy.
This Note argues that the viability of …

An Investigation Into The Student And Faculty Knowledge, Perception, And Usage Of Chatgpt, Isabella Burns
An Investigation Into The Student And Faculty Knowledge, Perception, And Usage Of Chatgpt, Isabella Burns
Honors Theses
Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) has become a significant topic in academia. Professors and university officials have been contemplating an all-out ban on utilizing such tools for undergraduate academic work. Sullivan et al (2023) noted “…student behaviors led some universities to ban the use of ChatGPT…” (p. 32). Instead of teaching students how to leverage ChatGPT as a powerful resource to enhance the learning process, universities have deemed use of ChatGPT unacceptable, equating its use with serious academic dishonesty offenses consistent with plagiarism (Hawdon et al., 2025). Directly copying from ChatGPT can constitute plagiarism and poses a significant issue for college-level studies, …

The Other Tradition Of Modernism: Writing Contemporary Chinese Architecture, Guanghui Ding Dr
Publications and Research
The Other Tradition of Modernism emerges from a pedagogical experiment at the City College of New York, where the editor taught a course on modern and contemporary Chinese architecture to upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. Combining thematic lectures, student presentations, writing workshops, and intensive editorial mentoring, the course sought to illuminate an alternative trajectory of architectural modernism. Geographically, it introduced modern Chinese architectural practices that developed outside Western modernist paradigms; culturally, it foregrounded context-based approaches that resist the hegemony of iconic, spectacle-driven architecture under contemporary neoliberal market logics.
This edited volume, composed of student contributions, articulates several key insights. First, …

To date, there is little evidence about the extent to which teacher and principal diversity is related to the advancement of applicants to teacher and principal jobs through the hiring pipeline. We investigate this issue using novel job application and hiring data from a wide range of school districts and charter organizations. We find that non-White teacher applicants are less likely to advance through the hiring pipeline, particularly Asian applicants. We do, however, see evidence of heterogeneity with charter schools more likely to hire underrepresented minority teacher applicants. We do not find similar differences for principal hiring, but smaller samples …

The landlord brought a nuisance holdover against a rent-stabilized tenant, alleging consistent noise. The tenant moved to dismiss, arguing the landlord failed to provide a notice to cure as required by the lease. Although the Rent Stabilization Code typically does not require a notice to cure for nuisance, the court found that the lease's more stringent notice provision was binding, as the Code establishes minimum rights and does not preclude greater tenant rights by contract. The motion was granted, and the petition was dismissed, as the landlord failed to comply with the lease's notice to cure requirement.
Levine V. Xu-Kehrli
All Decisions
The Appellate Term affirmed a Small Claims judgment granting the tenant a full return of her security deposit and limiting the landlord's counterclaim for property damage. The court found the landlord failed to provide an itemized statement detailing the basis for retaining the deposit within 14 days of the tenant's vacatur, as mandated by General Obligations Law § 7-108 [1-a][e] for unregulated tenancies. The decision emphasized that substantial justice was accomplished, relying heavily on the trial court's assessment of witness credibility regarding the property damage claims.

All Decisions
The Appellate Term affirmed the Civil Court's order granting the landlord's motion to strike the tenant's jury demand in a holdover proceeding. The court found that the original lease, under which the tenant sought succession rights, contained an enforceable jury waiver provision that bound the tenant. The court also held that the landlord's motion to strike the jury demand was not untimely, nor did the tenant demonstrate prejudice due to any delay.
Pejudo Realty Corp. V. Bryk
All Decisions
The Appellate Term reversed the Civil Court's sua sponte dismissal of the landlord's nonpayment petition, reinstating it and remanding for further proceedings. The lower court had dismissed the petition due to alleged defects, even though tenants failed to appear and landlord was not given notice or an opportunity to be heard. The Appellate Term held that sua sponte dismissal, while not appealable as of right, is an extraordinary remedy only justified in rare circumstances. No such circumstances existed here, as tenants had not sought dismissal, and the landlord was denied due process. The Court did not rule on the merits.
The Role Of Pten Subcellular Localization In Neuronal Development And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nicole Desmet
The Role Of Pten Subcellular Localization In Neuronal Development And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nicole Desmet
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are genetically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions that nevertheless converge on altered neuronal connectivity and circuit function. A central unresolved problem in the field is how diverse genetic perturbations, acting at different biological levels and developmental stages, give rise to shared neurodevelopmental outcomes. This dissertation addresses this problem by examining how gene function, subcellular signaling, and developmental context interact to shape neuronal morphology and circuit-relevant phenotypes.
Cell-autonomous mechanisms regulating neuronal morphology are examined through the ASD risk gene Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog (PTEN) in developing dentate gyrus granule neurons. Selective biasing of PTEN to defined intracellular compartments in …

Background – This study draws on data from a larger international project exploring parents' perceptions of the education of their children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Using responses from 1, 309 parents in Australia, England, Germany, and Norway it examines parental satisfaction with mainstream and special schools, and parents' school placement preferences, including willingness to change schools. Parental satisfaction is assessed as an overall evaluation of how well the child's school placement meets their needs, without distinguishing between specific aspects of the school experience. The study also explores whether the child's level of support is associated with these …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays in applied microeconomics, examining how subjective beliefs, institutional designs, and policy incentives shape critical life-cycle decisions in education and public safety. The first chapter investigates how students form beliefs about their academic ability and how the misalignment between perceived and benchmark ability shapes high-stakes educational sorting. Using longitudinal data from Taiwan, I show that these ability gaps systematically predict school and track choices. By developing a model of utility maximization under perceived ability, the results highlight that subjective beliefs, rather than objective scores alone, are central to educational outcomes and potential mismatches in school …
