Iii. Swiss Industrialization: Its Social Dimensions, Jürg K. Siegenthaler
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Under this heading I would like to bring together two different emphases in the study of industrialization that too often have remained separate: (a) the historical measurement of economic growth, undertaken by economic historians who have looked at industrial output and similar indicators in order to gauge a country's economic performance; and (b) the study of social policy measures such as workers' protection and social insurance, to which social and political historians have paid major attention in assessing a nation's reaction to the ups and downs of economic growth in the course of industrialization.

Autumn And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats In Washington State, Steven T. Knick, Steven J. Sweeney, J. Richard Alldredge, J. David Brittell
Autumn And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats In Washington State, Steven T. Knick, Steven J. Sweeney, J. Richard Alldredge, J. David Brittell
Great Basin Naturalist
The stomach contents were examined from 324 western Washington bobcats (Felis rufus) and 123 from eastern Washington taken by hunters from 1976 through 1980, for major prey items as well as sex- and age-related differences in diet. Western Washington bobcats ate primarily mountain beavers (Aplodontia rufa) (42% occurrence) and snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) (26%). Within that population females ate larger quantities of smaller prey such as Douglas squirrels (Tamiasciurus douglasi) and lesser amounts of deer (Odocoileus sp.) than males. Bobcat diets in eastern Washington were more diverse; main foods consisted of …
Nodulation And Acetylene Reduction By Two Legumes With Rhizobia Indigenous To Northern Great Basin Soils, M. D. Rumbaugh, D. A. Johnson
Nodulation And Acetylene Reduction By Two Legumes With Rhizobia Indigenous To Northern Great Basin Soils, M. D. Rumbaugh, D. A. Johnson
Great Basin Naturalist
Medicago sativa L. and Hedysarum boreale Nutt. were grown in the greenhouse on soils representing 27 of the major soil associations of the northern Great Basin. Nodulation of Medicago sativa L. by indigenous rhizobia occurred with 25 of the soil associations and of Hedysarum boreale Nutt. with 21 of these soil associations. Nitrogen fixation, as indicated by acetylene reduction activity, was greater for Medicago sativa L. than for Hedysarum boreale Nutt. for most of the soil associations. Multiple regression functions incorporating 49 independent climatic, edaphic, and vegetation variables failed to predict acetylene reduction activity with satisfactory precision.
Plague In Pine Martens And The Fleas Associated With Its Occurrence, W. J. Zielinski
Plague In Pine Martens And The Fleas Associated With Its Occurrence, W. J. Zielinski
Great Basin Naturalist
Thirteen pine martens (Martes Americana) were sampled periodically from July 1979 to September 1980 for plague (Yersinia pestis) antibodies and their fleas collected and identified. Four individuals were positive for plague antibodies on 8 of 24 sampling occasions. Titer peaks in these individuals occurred simultaneously in early winter but fell to undetectable levels by late spring. A chipmunk flea (Monopsyllus ciliatus) was the most common ectoparasite constituting 55% of all individuals collected. Thirty-one percent of all fleas belonged to Chaetopsylla floridensis, a species previously unreported in California. The remains of ground-dwelling sciurids (chipmunks, Eutamias …
Size And Seasonal Activity Patterns Of Abundant Sympatric Spider Species In Cache County, Utah, James V. Robinson
Size And Seasonal Activity Patterns Of Abundant Sympatric Spider Species In Cache County, Utah, James V. Robinson
Great Basin Naturalist
Of the eight most frequently collected spiders at a northern Utah study site, each of two species employed one of the following hunting strategies: pursuing, web building, jumping, and ambushing. Within each pair, size differences between species were substantial for all but the ambushers. The ambushers had different seasonal activity patterns, as did the web builders.
"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt
"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt
Quidditas
Near the midpoint of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence formulates an authoritative-sounding concept which seemingly lends itself to interpreting tragedy. Gathering "baleful weeds" and "precious juiced flowers," the Friar states that everything earthly has a virtuous use and a potential abuse:
O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies
In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities.
For naught so vile that on the earth doth live
But too the earth some special good doth give;
Nor aught so good but, strain'd from that fair use,
Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.
Virtue itself turns vice being misapplied, …

Another View Of Family Conflict And Family Wholeness, C. Terry Warner, Terrance D. Olson
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
A family life educator's suggested solutions of family problems will spring from his beliefs abou the sources of human conflict. This paper sketches a theory of conflict that is rooted in the individual's betrayal of his/her own fundamental values. Hypocrisy and self-deception ensue, and individuals insidiously provoke each other to do the very things for which they blame one another. This means that people can desist form the attitudes that throw them into conflict and live harmoniously. But because of their self-deception, seeing how to do this is not easy. Ultimately, the solution lies in moral responsibility. Implications for family …
Infitah And The Modernization Of Egypt, Chris Monson
Infitah And The Modernization Of Egypt, Chris Monson
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
At the secondary school, I came to realize for the first time what city dwellers were and what class officers meant. . . . My classmates were naturally better dressed than I was but I never suffered because of this. Many of my friends came from wealthy families and lived in luxurious houses, yet I cannot recall ever wishing to possess what they had. --Anwar el-Sadat

Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, and Grand View College, Des Moines, Iowa, are the two surviving institutions of higher education founded by Danish immigrants in the United States. One part of a year-long celebration of Dana's centennial in 1984 was the publication of a new history of the college and its parent institution , Trinity Seminary. Entitled A Place Called Dana , the book was released October 5 during Dana 's Homecoming observance.
Hopping A Train, John Snyder
Hopping A Train, John Snyder
Inscape
Call me a vagrant. I think that's what Melville really wanted to say when he started Moby Dick. Conviction left him though , and he settled on "call me Ishmael," which is actually just another way of saying the same thing; if you are an Ishmael, likely you have been cast out and have little means of making a living. Whether for the original biblical figure or a Roger Williams , the situation can be difficult. ''He is a dangerous Ishmael," a leader of the Puritan community said of Williams after he had departed into the wilderness; "He turns all …
A Case Of Double Inscription: Carlos De Sigüenza Y Góngora's Infortunios De Alonso Ramírez, Lee H. Dowling
A Case Of Double Inscription: Carlos De Sigüenza Y Góngora's Infortunios De Alonso Ramírez, Lee H. Dowling
Quidditas
Among the early works of Latin American prose literature, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora's Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez has attracted a relatively large share of critical attention. Much of this has stemmed from an interest in tracing the antecedents of the Latin American novel – the novel believed to represent a prestigious literary genre whose comparatively late appearance in Latin America has been the theme of much discussion. While such interest led a number of critics to reread Infortunios and other comparable early works with renewed interest, evaluations stemming from the search for a nucleus of characteristics derived from the …

"... to read the sign is not only to understand its function in the aesthetic or fictional ensemble to the exclusion of the outside world, it is to seek the link between the sign and the referer, the aesthetic and the political, delirium and deliverance."

The Grand Peur Of 1348-49: The Shock Wave Of The Black Death In The German Southwest, Steven Rowan
The Grand Peur Of 1348-49: The Shock Wave Of The Black Death In The German Southwest, Steven Rowan
Quidditas
The massacre of most fo the Jewish communities in Western Germany and what is now Switzerland between late 1348 and the middle of 1349 permanently altered the position of Jews in Central Europe, both by shifting the Jewish population eastward and by moving those Jews who remained behind to the periphery of economic society. A close examination of the chronology of the massacres on the local level rapidly disproves the traditional interpretation that the massacres were attacks of the classic 'scapegoat' type made in response to the onset of the first great modern European plague. Although the first massacres outside …

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli
Theses and Dissertations
When Senator William Henry King took office in 1917, Utah and the nation were apprehensive about the presence of large numbers of foreign born aliens and citizens. Utah's King joined the wartime hysteria and promoted many nativistic policies directed against the foreign born population. During the post-war Red Scare he continued his crusade, concentrating on the suppression of Bolsheviks and the Industrial Workers of the World.
But when Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924--a nativistic law designed to curtail the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans--King was the bill's only opponent from the West or South. Since anti-radicalism and …
