The Dano-Norwegian Department Of Chicago Theological Seminary, Frederick Hale Jan 1984

The Dano-Norwegian Department Of Chicago Theological Seminary, Frederick Hale

The Bridge

When European emigration to the United States surged anew after the Civil War, American Protestants of several denominations extended both spiritual and economic assistance to those newcomers who, in their perception, most closely shared their own religious traditions. Scandinavian immigrants, nearly all of whom were at least nominally Protestant, naturally received a generous portion of this aid, much of which came in the form of ministerial education. Young men who looked forward to careers as Lutheran pastors had access to ethnic theological colleges anchored in that tradition if not always in their respective national heritages. Norwegian Lutheran seminarians in the …

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: Three Essays On Place And Meaning, Reed Evan Richards

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of three personal essays and a postface, in part experiments in genre, mode, and structure, and in large part explorations of the meanings of specific places in culture and on the self-definition of the observer-writer, the first essay being set in Florida and centered at Disneyworld; the second consisting of fragments of observations along the route from St. Augustine to Washington, D.C., and ending with a brief fiction; the third, a speculative/anti-speculative rumination over many things, including meaning, death, faith, and enshrinement, and set in Illinois, Missouri, and South Africa; and the postface a theoretical/descriptive theoretical defense …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills Jan 1984

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

In examining the use of paid television by various evangelical organizations (the "Electronic Church") as contrasted with its use by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), several important differences were discovered. First, the programs of the electronic church are usually designed much like a normal Sunday service with a "preacher" and "congregation" (the T.V. viewers). The LDS approach has been to communicate religious principles through the use of a story. Their productions are attractive to a large audience because they often feature a well-known television or motion picture celebrity, and are aired during prime-time viewing hours.

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller Jan 1984

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a replication of Canning's 1955 survey of family life in Provo, Utah. The original sample consisted of 239 couples who were married and currently living there. The replication was a 1983 mail survey that used many of Canning's original questions and included a sample of 255 Provo families.

This study measured changes in several courtship and family variables using the companionship family as an ideal type. Findings included increases in the emphasis on the role of romantic love in mate selection, handsomeness as an attractive quality that women seek in a spouse, family members seeking recreation outside …

Chaucer's Physicians: Their Texts, Contexts, And The Canterbury Tales, Elizabeth Penley Skerpan Jan 1984

Chaucer's Physicians: Their Texts, Contexts, And The Canterbury Tales, Elizabeth Penley Skerpan

Quidditas

In the Canterbury Tales, the pilgrim Chaucer lists an impressive series of medical authors whom his fellow pilgrim the Physician is supposed to have read. As we continue past the General Prologue, we discover that these writers do not merely embellish the PHysician's claims to a well-rounded medical education: two are actually mentioned in the course of story-telling, though, oddly, not by the Physician, but by the Pardoner and Parson. These two pilgrims' references appear in tales more concerned with spiritual than physical healing and health, and indeed the Parson preaches on the "cure" of sins as a necessary …

Where And Why Are Misreporters Misreporting?, Rick Malmgren Jan 1984

Where And Why Are Misreporters Misreporting?, Rick Malmgren

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

Survey researchers are, of necessity, perennially concerned about the validity of survey questions. It is often difficult, if not impossible, to establish conclusively the validity of many attitudinal and behavioral questions, but sometimes invalidity is blatant. For example, in every National Election Study conducted by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center (SRC) there has been a consistent over-report of voting behavior. When the SRC's turnout rate is compared with the official election returns, the survey derived data continually exceeds the actual results, usually by more than 10 percent. In 1968 Aage Clausen said "the consistency, as well as the …

The Chadha Decision: A New Light In The Constitutional Balance, Murray Snow Jan 1984

The Chadha Decision: A New Light In The Constitutional Balance, Murray Snow

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In the past decade, there has been an interesting argument in American legal circles concerning the constitutionality of the legislative veto. This type of veto is a provision included in legislation (and in some cases making up the legislation itslef) which allows Congress to cancel executive actions. Soem scholars argue that since such vetoes take place and have the force of law without recieving the signature of the President, nor in many cases the approval of the other House of Congress, they are unconsitutional. Others oint out, however, that for the Congress to exercise a legislative veto both Houses of …

Electoral Revision In Japan--1982, Ray Christensen Jan 1984

Electoral Revision In Japan--1982, Ray Christensen

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

The revision of an election system is one of th touchiest issues in a western-style democracy. Every politician knows that a proposed reapportionment scheme might affect his chances for reelection. Thus, many accuse politicions of not considering the merits of a revision proposal, but only ther personal consequences. This phenomenon is seen at regular 10-year intervals in the United States. With each new census, some states are required to redraw their congressional district boundaries, and, invariably, some of the disputes that ensue have to be settled by the courts or a nonpartisan panel. This kind of action is by no …

The Extended Republic And The Control Of Majority Faction: A Contrast And Comparison Of De Tocqueville And The American Lawgivers, Anne Rowley Jan 1984

The Extended Republic And The Control Of Majority Faction: A Contrast And Comparison Of De Tocqueville And The American Lawgivers, Anne Rowley

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

The French political philosopher, Alexis de Tocqueville, saw the endurance of American democracy as a possible model that would enable his contrymen to temper the illl effects of their own democratic system. Although he did not advocate that every aspect of the American model should be strictly adhered to, he worte about the goodness of American laws and the wisdom of the Americna Founding Fathers. Furthermore, as he described the practical application of their ideology, de Tocqueville appeared to align himself with most of their beliefs.

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin

The Bridge

In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …

Political Vs. Economic Incentives, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1984

Political Vs. Economic Incentives, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

H this paper is the best challenge that can be brought against the New Resource Economics (NRE) and its advocacy for privatization of the public lands, we are likely to see both around for a long time. If there is fallacy in the idea of privatization, it is not illuminated in the arguments of this article. The paper misrepresents what the NRE is, shows little comprehension of the basic concepts on which it rests, and completely reverses the basic nature of the privatization solution. I hope to demonstrate as much in this critique.

Identity Through Remembrance, Axel C. Kildegaard Jan 1984

Identity Through Remembrance, Axel C. Kildegaard

The Bridge

In 1864, the United States government sent Colonel Kit Carson on a pillaging, murdering foray through Navaho country, what is now northern Arizona. Scot O'Dell tells the story in a charming and moving book for young adults entitled, Sing Down the Moon, winner of the Hans Christian Andersen medal for children's books in 1970. The entire nation of about 10,000 Navahoes were forced to migrate, to relocate. It was a painful journey marked by much suffering and death. To this day it is known as the "long walk;" any child of the Navahoes will tell you the story. Mother or …

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson Dec 1983

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a numerical formulation which incorporates the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures into a mathematical mode used to in an existing finite element code. Two separate crack definitions were incorporated, one involving a discrete crack model, and the other a continuum approach defining a new material with regularly spaced joints. Several examples are also presented demonstrating the use of this capability.

Iii. Strangers Settling A Wild Land: Mari Sandoz' Writings About Swiss Settlers In Nebraska, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On my first trip West, from the corn plains of Illinois to California and back, Nebraska was the first state with a physiognomy really distinct from the green fields I had come to know. Although there were many spectacular landscapes to be admired during the trip, the grassy hills of Western Nebraska, round and treeless, stayed in my memory. So did the sunflowers, lining the roads and swaying gently in the grass. Little did I know then that, years later, this rather bare, monotonous country would hold my imagination through literary works of women, Willa Cather and Mari Sandoz. With …

Review: Randall M. Miller, Ed., 'A Warm & Zealous Spirit': John J. Zubly And The American Revolution, A Selection Of His Writings. Macon, Georgia: Mercer University Press, 1982. Xii, 211 Pp., Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This edition of the religio-political writings of Johann Joachim Zublin (1724-1781) is a valuable and welcome addition to Swiss Americana. John J. Zubly, as he came to be known in the American colonies, had grown up in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he studied for the ministry. He was ordained in the German Reformed Church of London in 1744 and then moved to South Carolina. His writings which were published after 1760 touch upon vital questions of the years 1760 to 1780, years that saw the transformation of the thirteen continental North American British colonies into a nascent league of states …

Vegetative Types And Endemic Plants Of The Bryce Canyon Breaks, Robert A. Graybosch, Hayle Buchanan Oct 1983

Vegetative Types And Endemic Plants Of The Bryce Canyon Breaks, Robert A. Graybosch, Hayle Buchanan

Great Basin Naturalist

The scenic Bryce Canyon "breaks" constitute harsh and inhospitable habitats for plant life. The eroded pink cliffs and talus slopes are sites of some of the most rapid natural erosion on earth. This paper divides the plant life on the breaks of the main Bryce Canyon amphitheater into four vegetative types. A checklist of all plant species found in the main amphitheater is included. Many of the rare and endangered endemic species of the park are found in the Pinus longaeva vegetative type. Recommendations for managing the breaks to protect endemics are presented.

New Generic Concepts In The Triticeae Of The Intermountain Region: Key And Comments, Mary E. Barkworth, Douglas R. Dewey, Riley J. Atkins

Great Basin Naturalist

Revision of the perennial genera of North American Triticeae requires recognition of seven new genera in the Intermountain Region: Elytrigia, Leymus, Psathyrostachys, Pseudoroegneria, Thinopyrum, and the hybrid genera × Elyleymus and × Pseudelymus. One previously recognized genus, Sitanion, is included in Elymus. Several new combinations are presented to accommodate the taxonomic changes. Elymus trachycaulus is treated as a widespread, polymorphic species with three subspecies in the region: subsp. trachycaulus, subsecundus, and latiglumis. Agropyron dasystachyum and A. albicans are treated as conspecific subspecies of Elymus lanceolatus. A key to the genera of the Triticeae occurring in the Intermountain Region is …
