A Marketing Research Project: San Francisco Pier 49 Sourdough Pizza, Jason Bennett, John Brasher, Kristina Davis, Greg Gordon

Student Works

Pier 49 San Francisco Sourdough Pizza Company is a gourmet pizza franchiser whose stores are located in Utah, Idaho, California, Hawaii, and Canada. Pier 49 has experienced problems with the Hillside store located in Sandy, Utah. Due to these problems, Pier 49 management contracted Arrow Research to research the following objectives: What are consumers' perceptions of Pier 49? What is the potential appeal of offering additional menu items? What types of restaurant services are preferred? What is the favorite brand of Pizza eaten by Hillside residents and what is their profile of "the ideal pizza restaurant"? Arrow Research comprised of …

Diphthongization In Spanish Derivational Morphology: An Empirical Investigation, David Eddington Jan 1996

Diphthongization In Spanish Derivational Morphology: An Empirical Investigation, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

The alternation between the mid-vowels / e/, /o/ and the diphthongs /je/ and /we/ is widespread in Spanish, and several rule-based analyses claim to account for it. However, they are founded on a small body of evidence. These analyses are evaluated against data from a large corpus, and cannot account for the non-discrete nature of diphthongization as evidenced in the corpus. The corpus data suggest that diphthongization has a gradient relationship to the derivational suffixes. · A nonderivational account, based on Bybee's model (1985, 1988, 1991), better embodies the scalar relationship between diphthongization and the suffixes. This relationship was tested …

The Psychological Status Of Phonological Analyses, David Eddington Jan 1996

The Psychological Status Of Phonological Analyses, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

This paper casts doubt on the psychological relevance of many phonological analyses. There are four reasons for this: 1) theoretical adequacy does not necessarily imply psychological significance; 2) most approaches are nonempirical in that they are not subject to potential spatiotemporal falsification; 3) phonological analyses are established with little or no recourse to the speakers of the language via experimental psychology; 4) the limited base of evidence which most analyses are founded on is further cause for skepticism.

The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming Jan 1996

The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

The Utah War and its aftermath changed Utah and the Mormons forever. This change came because of the growing Gentile influence in the territory and was reflected most adequately in the current periodicals of the period. The Valley Tan and the Mountaineer are especially important because their opposition to one another brought many important issues to the forefront of discussion. These issues would be important to the Mormons learning to live and work with those not of their faith and to share in their Zion.

These newspapers were successful in giving to its reader, both past and present, a glimpse …

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady Jan 1996

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. Such needs are a desire to look up to a hero, a need to fit …

Christian Feminist Publications And Structures Of Constraint: A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sarah And Exponent Ii Within The Contexts Of Neo-Evangelicalism And Mormonism, Sasha S. Cluff Jan 1996

Christian Feminist Publications And Structures Of Constraint: A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sarah And Exponent Ii Within The Contexts Of Neo-Evangelicalism And Mormonism, Sasha S. Cluff

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses content analysis to compare two conservative Christian feminist publications: Daughters of Sarah, produced by neo-evangelical feminists, and Exponent II, produced by Mormon feminists. Findings are based on insights from three main theories: Debra Minkoff's organization-environment perspective, Nancy Folbre's model of collective action based on structures of constraint, and the church-sect typology from the sociology of religion literature. Although both organizations similarly endeavor to integrate feminist and religious identities, the loose boundaries of evangelicalism allow Daughters of Sarah to explore a more liberal feminist agenda and interact with broader feminist sources while still remaining within the …

A Naturalistic Study Of The History Of Mormon Quilts And Their Influence On Today's Quilters, Helen-Louise Hancey Jan 1996

A Naturalistic Study Of The History Of Mormon Quilts And Their Influence On Today's Quilters, Helen-Louise Hancey

Theses and Dissertations

This interpretive study investigated the "quilt" and its significance to Latter-day Saint Women. Mormon master quilters were chosen because of their knowledge of fabrics, patterns, and symbolism, their skill levels, and their intense interest in quilting. The researcher conducted interviews with the master quilters from July 1995 to April 1996. Field notes were taken and data concerning both observed actions and verbal comments regarding the importance of the quilt were collected, charted, coded, and analyzed.

Several dominant patterns and themes emerged from analyses of the data, including: quilting is an enjoyable and active art form among Mormon women, pattern selection …

In Search Of A Transcendental Film Style: The Cinematic Art Form And The Mormon Motion Picture, Thomas J. Lefler Jan 1996

In Search Of A Transcendental Film Style: The Cinematic Art Form And The Mormon Motion Picture, Thomas J. Lefler

Theses and Dissertations

This project is an effort to establish a paradigm for reading and tracing transcendence in film art and film propaganda. It addresses the intersection of aesthetic and spiritual planes which is supported by a long and complex tradition of art within religious worship. The study selects a single film as a microcosm of larger issues of cinematic representation and spirituality, in particular the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). It makes a formalistic comparison of structural and and stylistic elements between a Mormon long-form narrative, Legacy (1994) with the classic Hollywood narrative on the one …

Let's Surf-The-Net! World-Wide Web (Www) Sites In Italy, Or: How/Why Include A Web-Browser Component In Culture And Civilization Classes, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

First, this essay details the technical elements required to set up a computer for Web-surfing, then it discusses the rationale for a Web-browser component in Culture and Civilization courses. The first part of this study (the technical portion) is geared specifically toward teachers with little or no familiarity with the Internet and the World-Wide Web. In the second part of the article, the applied-pedagogy aspects of Web-browsing are provided for all colleagues in the profession, proficient or not in cyberspace surfing. This article argues that the internet and the World-Wide Web are here to stay and that, within certain limitations, …

Combustion Modeling Of Rdx, Hmx And Gap With Detailed Kinetics, Jeffrey E. Davidson Jan 1996

Combustion Modeling Of Rdx, Hmx And Gap With Detailed Kinetics, Jeffrey E. Davidson

Theses and Dissertations

A one-dimensional, steady-state numerical model of the combustion of homogeneous solid propellant has been developed. The combustion processes is modeled in three regions: solid, two-phase (liquid and gas) and gas. Conservation of energy and mass equations are solved in the two-phase and gas regions and the eigenvalue of the system (the mass burning rate) is converged by matching the heat flux at the interface of these two regions. The chemical reactions of the system are modeled using a global kinetic mechanism in the two-phase region and an elementary kinetic mechanism in the gas region. The model has been applied to …

Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner Jan 1996

Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner

BYU Studies

Religion scholar Jacob Neusner looks at the corporeal nature of God through the lens of Mormonism and Judaism. He addresses anthropomorphism and incarnation, and concludes that the way to know God is through “our relationship with him, not through our act of the incarnation of God in heart and mind and soul.” Neusner appreciates the powerful doctrine of God’s corporeality taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith in the 1842 King Follett Sermon, which says that men may converse with God “as one man converses with another.” He says, “In the formative documents of the Torah in its oral version, that …

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt Jan 1996

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt

The Bridge

Junction City, in the early thirties, was a sleepy, small

town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a

population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be

called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way

and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity

and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went

straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1996

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

The dramatic postwar decline in the labor force participation of older men in the United States has motivated a sizable body of literature on retirement behavior. Three factors, in particular, have been studied extensively: the growth of the Social Security program (see, for example, Burtless 1986; Burtless and Moffitt 1984; Diamond and Hausman 1984; Hausman and Wise 1985; Sueyoshi 1989), the increased availability and generosity of private pensions (Stock and Wise 1990a, 1990b), and the expansion of federal disability insurance (Bound and Waidmann 1992). One potentially important factor that until recently has not received much attention is the availability of …

History Of The Lds Southern States Mission, 1875-1898, Heather M. Seferovich Jan 1996

History Of The Lds Southern States Mission, 1875-1898, Heather M. Seferovich

Theses and Dissertations

This in-depth study of late nineteenth-century missionary work in the Southern States Mission examines the encounter of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the American South. It highlights some of the region's varying conditions affecting missionary work and reports the elders' responses to new and different situations, peoples, and subcultures. Examining missionary work from the elders' viewpoint creates a better understanding of what the missionaries experienced and how they reacted to new situations outside the Mormon "corridor" of settlement in the American West. The statistical analysis of the 1,689 elders in the Mission reveals new details about …

The True Points Of My Doctrine, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 1996

The True Points Of My Doctrine, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In a 1991 BYU Studies article, I identified and analyzed three core Book of Mormon passages in which the gospel or doctrine of Jesus Christ is defined. Each of these passages presents the gospel as a six-point formula or message about what men must do if they will be saved. In the present article I go on to examine all other Book of Mormon references to the six elements in this formula. Faith is choosing to trust in Jesus Christ in all that one does. Repentance is turning away from the life of sin by making a covenant to obey …

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike Jan 1996

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small. Andrew Skinner, a colleague of mine at Brigham Young University, …

On The Cross-Cultural Attitudes And Experiences Of Recently Returned Lds Missionaries, Timothy B. Smith, Richard N. Roberts, Burton Kerr Jan 1996

On The Cross-Cultural Attitudes And Experiences Of Recently Returned Lds Missionaries, Timothy B. Smith, Richard N. Roberts, Burton Kerr

Faculty Publications

To examine the effect of the mission experience upon attitudes towards members of different cultures, 273 recently returned LDS missionaries and 493 LDS college students who had not yet served missions were administered measures of racial attitudes. Subsequently, the highest and lowest fifth of missionaries who had served in non-English speaking nations were interviewed. Results indicated that the missionaries did differ from the non-missionary sample in their racial attitudes and that several key qualitative pre-mission and mission experiences distinguished between the two groups interviewed. Prejudice, with its attendant train of evil, is giving way before the force of truth, whose …

The Crisis Of Switzerland On The Threshold Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page Nov 1995

The Crisis Of Switzerland On The Threshold Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

During the fifty years since the conclusion of World War II in 1945, Europe has undergone more radical changes than during the three preceding millennia. The Treaty of Maastricht, prepared by the twelve members of the European Community in December, 1991, legalizes a process of European social, economic and political unification and homogenization contradicting the evolution of European politics and societies since the fall of the Roman Empire. The majority of the nation states of Western Europe have been generated by a concerted struggle against amalgamation into large transnational empires. Notable examples are France, formed by the dissolution of its …

Book Review: Literary Freedom And Social Constraints In The Works' Of Gertrud Leutenegger., Laura Villiger Nov 1995

Book Review: Literary Freedom And Social Constraints In The Works' Of Gertrud Leutenegger., Laura Villiger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In and around Switzerland Gertrud Leutennegger ranks among the wellknown contemporary Swiss writers. As yet, however, her work has not been translated and its reception has therefore been limited to German-speaking countries. Margrit Zinggeler' s study thus comes as a welcome introduction to Leutenegger' s writings that is designed for a general as well as specialized readership. As Zinggeler makes clear at the outset of her investigation, when Gertrud Leutenegger first started to write in the early 1970's, her artistic independence signaled a turning point in Swiss women writing. Luckily, the author has never since compromised her inner vision and …

Classification Of The Riparian Vegetation Along A 6-Km Reach Of The Animas River, Southwestern Colorado, Gillian M. Walford, William L. Baker Oct 1995

Classification Of The Riparian Vegetation Along A 6-Km Reach Of The Animas River, Southwestern Colorado, Gillian M. Walford, William L. Baker

Great Basin Naturalist

Riparian ecosystems are important components of landscapes, particularly because of their role in biodiversity. A first step in using a "coarse-filter" approach to riparian biodiversity conservation is to determine the kinds of riparian ecosystems. These ecosystems vary substantially in plant species composition along a single river reach, as well as between rivers, and yet the river-reach scale has received little attention. We sampled the vascular plant composition of 67 contiguous patches of riparian vegetation along the reach of the Animas River, in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains, that is relatively undisturbed by human land uses. Using cluster analysis and detrended …

Prey Choices And Foraging Efficiency Of Recently Fledged California Gulls At Mono Lake, California, Chris S. Elphick, Margaret A. Rubega Oct 1995

Prey Choices And Foraging Efficiency Of Recently Fledged California Gulls At Mono Lake, California, Chris S. Elphick, Margaret A. Rubega

Great Basin Naturalist

We studied the foraging biology of recently fledged California Gulls (Larus californicus) at Mono Lake during August–September 1991. We made behavioral observations to collect information on the relative proportions of different prey types in the diet of these birds and took plankton tows to determine the relative abundance of each prey in the water column. These data show that alkali flies (Ephydra hians) were the primary constituent of the diet and that they were eaten at a much higher rate than one would expect based on their abundance. We also determined the number of feeding attempts …
