Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii Rydb.) and blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis[Willd. ex H.B.K.J Lag. ex Griffiths) are widely distributed throughout the U.S.A. They arc two of the predominant native grasses in rangelands in the northern Great Plains. Because suitable cultivars are not always available for reseeding disturbed areas, we collected plants of the two species and evaluated phenotypic variability to determine potential for breeding improvement. We also sampled the nematode popula­tion associated with the collections. This Article challenges the conventional understanding of originalism as a method that promotes unchanging constitutional meanings. Drawing on four and a half decades of experience since Attorney General Edwin Meese first championed originalism as a conservative project, this Article demonstrates that originalism has generally proven destabilizing rather than stabilizing to constitutional law. Landmark cases such as New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College, and Shelby County v. Professor Sherif Girgis’s Dunwody Lecture argues that today’s originalists face a choice between two irreconcilable goals: constraining judges’ moral or policymaking discretion and adhering to the Constitution’s original meaning. In the academy, they’ve generally opted to sacrifice judicial constraint for the sake of fidelity to original law. But the Supreme Court’s originalists are far less comfortable with that move. Where the Constitution’s original meaning is underdetermined, or seems to invite discretionary judgment calls, they’ve looked for other non-originalist tools to tie their hands. In Trump v. CASA, the Supreme Court expounded on and applied a methodological framework that mimics the test the Court has recently begun deploying in Second Amendment and other individual rights cases. That test has three primary components: (1) search for historical analogues; (2) apply historical principles; and (3) abjure contemporary concerns that can be labeled “policy” considerations. Bruen’s echoes in CASA are noticeable and telling. So too are the lessons that CASA can teach about how the Court’s approach to history and tradition is continuing to develop.

Is originalism the law today? Because judicial opinions are an important part of how we know the law, it is important exactly what makes a judicial opinion originalist. Lower courts interpreting the opinions of a higher court lack the power to smooth out inconsistencies, fill in assumptions about what is really motivating the higher court, or dismiss stated rationales that conflict with what those lower courts take to be the facts. This article examines the development and significance of the Second Prophecy of Mandos within J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. Through an analysis of Tolkien’s published works and posthumously edited texts, the study traces the evolution of the prophecy from its earliest formulations in The Book of Lost Tales to its later iterations in the Quenta Silmarillion tradition. Particular attention is devoted to the editorial decision by Christopher Tolkien to omit the prophecy from the 1977 publication of The Silmarillion, assessing both the philological and interpretative factors that may have influenced this choice. Environmental geopolitics is a field of study in which narratives about the environment are analyzed to reveal the underlying motivations and objectives they support. Using Shannon O’Lear’s (2020) framework of environmental geopolitics, I conduct a comparative analysis of the narratives surrounding two distinct development projects: Henry Ford’s historical company town in the Brazilian Amazon, Fordlandia, and a proposed ecotourism resort park in El Mirador, Guatemala. Analysis of Fordlandia reveals a narrative of American frontierism and a man-versus-nature perspective that served to paint the environment as belligerent and thereby justify corporate control and Indigenous assimilation. Background/Objectives: Statins are currently one of the most commonly used cholesterol-lowering drugs. In recent years, in addition to their well-known effects on the cardiovascular system, statins have been shown to exert beneficial effects in the progression of various neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Methods: In this study, the effects of lovastatin on the function of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine (nACh) receptors expressed in rat hippocampus and Xenopus oocytes were investigated. Results: In whole-cell patch clamp studies in hippocampal neurons, 21-day chronic (20 mg/kg), but not acute (20 min), lovastatin treatment caused significant potentiation of choline (a selective agonist for α7 nACh receptors)-induced currents …

This thesis examines the justificatory foundations of moral accountability as a social practice and the profound disconnect between our ordinary intuitions about justice, the moral attitudes we hold toward one another, and the governing institutional practices of punishment. Drawing on Stephen Darwall's second-person standpoint and P.F. Strawson's account of reactive attitudes, the paper argues that legitimate accountability presupposes two necessary conditions, freedom and equality, understood as the shared capacity of rational agents to recognize moral demands and stand in reciprocal normative relation with one another. Ergosteryl-3β-O-L-aspartate synthase (ErdS) catalyzes tRNA-dependent aspartylation of ergosterol, a lipid essential for fungal cell membrane integrity. However, the functional significance of ergosteryl-aspartate and the molecular mechanisms underlying its synthesis remain unclear. Here, we show that ErdS localization is highly dynamic and that Erg-Asp is required for proper hyphal growth, sporulation, and spore germination, and likely influences stress tolerance. The cryo-electron microscopy structure of ErdS revealed an unprecedented sterol-binding pocket. In addition, the structures in complex with a non-hydrolyzable Asp-N-tRNAAsp show a tRNA-guided intramolecular aminoacyl transfer mechanism between two functional domains of the enzyme. This study spotlights the statistical adiabatic channel model as an efficient and accurate method for deriving low-temperature (de)-excitation rate coefficients for collisions induced by heavy projectiles. For such systems, fully quantum treatments become intractable, while quasi-classical methods fail at low temperature. Here, we demonstrate that the statistical adiabatic channel model overcomes these limitations by combining statistical sampling with an adiabatic channel representation. Its application to the HCN and HNC isomers colliding with CO yields rate coefficients in quantitative agreement with full quantum results benchmarked for the lowest total angular momentum. These systems are relevant for modeling cometary comae, where reliable …

Metastatic cancer cell fate is shaped by the local microenvironment niches. To unbiasedly define the cellular and molecular features of metastatic niches, we developed sortase A-based microenvironment niche tagging (SAMENT), which selectively labels cells encountered by cancer cells during metastasis. Applying SAMENT across multiple cancer models and target organs revealed shared niche features, including macrophage enrichment and T cell depletion, alongside marked organ-specific phenotype heterogeneity in niche macrophages. In bone, metastatic niches are enriched for macrophages expressing estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) with active ERα signaling. Conditional deletion of Esr1 in macrophages significantly impaired bone colonization by enabling T cell infiltration. …

Pregnant and birthing people are inappropriately criminalized. Such criminalization is for behavior during their pregnancy that would not otherwise be criminalized, including when there was no harm to the later born baby, and for birth outcomes like miscarriages and still births. Law supports criminalization in part because of the historic legal significance given to fetal “viability” as a demarcation between full personhood rights for pregnant people and the encroachment of fetal “personhood” on those rights. Focusing on Maryland’s new constitutional amendment for reproductive freedom, this essay examines how the new amendment offers promise in restoring the full personhood rights for …
