Swiss American Historical Society Review
At 10:00 A.M., President Karl I. Niederer called the business meeting to order. He expressed the Society's thanks to His Excellency, Ambassador Alfred Defago for hosting this meeting and to staff Member Ms. Florence Nicole for having so efficiently taken care of all the local arrangements. The Society has traditionally met here in Washington every third year. Our Washington meetings also mark the conclusion of outgoing officers' three-year terms and the election of new officers, so meeting in this place has a special significance. Mr. Niederer also expressed his deep appreciation to Ambassador and Mrs. Defago for welcoming us to …

Analysis Of The Interpolation Error Between Multiresolution Images, Bryan S. Morse
Analysis Of The Interpolation Error Between Multiresolution Images, Bryan S. Morse
Faculty Publications
Many rendering or image-analysis systems require calculation of versions of an image at lesser resolutions than the original. Because the filtering required to perform such calculations accurately cannot typically be done in real time, many systems use interpolation between images at precalculated resolutions. This discrete sampling of the scale component of multiresolution image spaces is analogous to spatial sampling in discrete images. This paper quantifies and bounds the error that can be introduced during such interpolation as a function of the scale-space sampling rate used. A method is presented that uses the diffusion equation to relate spatial derivatives to scale …

Pareto Optimality And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds
Pareto Optimality And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
In 1959, James M. Buchanan criticized the collectivist misuse of Pareto optimality by the "new welfare economists" and made a first attempt to extend that individualist concept into the political realm. Over the following three decades he further developed his political application of Pareto’s insight to buttress an essentially economic analysis of political exchange that would justify the processes of constitutional democracy in the same way Pareto efficiency justifies free markets. In this paper I will explain why Buchanan’s particular formulations will not work and propose a more comprehensive solution that accomplishes Buchanan’s announced purpose. I will argue that a …
The Coming Forth Of The Book Of Mormon In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds
The Coming Forth Of The Book Of Mormon In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
I hope this study, however preliminary it might appear, will provide a sound first step toward developing our self-understanding as Latter-day Saints of the history of Book of Mormon use in the twentieth century and the phenomenal increase in understanding, appreciation, and study that has taken place over the last three to four decades. This study may also offer one useful perspective for the gradually emerging history of cultural Mormonism and its antipathy to the Book of Mormon. This study is grounded in the analysis of a number of possible indicators of intensity of interest in the Book of Mormon …
Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan
Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan
Theses and Dissertations
The development of early Mormon religion is best viewed in the context of multiple discourses, each of which contained various competing symbols. These discourses shaped the mind and world-view of early Latter-day Saints and determined in part their behavior. Prophetic symbols existed simultaneously with other, more American symbols; and while neither discourse excluded the other, a prophetic discourse gradually came to dominate. At the same time, however, the American discourse in Mormon religion remained intact and continued to influence the behavior and actions of early Mormons.
Since Joseph Smith's Time: Lexical Semantic Shifts In The Book Of Mormon, Renee Bangerter
Since Joseph Smith's Time: Lexical Semantic Shifts In The Book Of Mormon, Renee Bangerter
Theses and Dissertations
In the years since Joseph Smith completed the translation of the Book of Mormon, the English language has changed; some common phraseologies and word meanings are dissimilar to today's. Often, in reading the Book of Mormon, we impose our current definitions onto terms that in 1830 had a different meaning. Our interpretation of these words, as well as the passages in which they are found, is skewed by our modern definitions. These words, when they occur in the Book of Mormon, demonstrate dialectal and obsolete senses. In the case of some words, the dialectal or obsolete sense is so far …
Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon
Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon
Theses and Dissertations
This project asks families what mealtime together means to them. The topic of family mealtime appears comparatively infrequently in academic literature, and any meaning that families associate with mealtime has seldom been studied directly. This particular research investigates meanings of the understudied mealtime event by interviewing three or four generations of family members from five different families. Attention is paid to emerging standards of rigor for qualitative research, namely applicability through the selection of families who have a history of practicing a family mealtime tradition, truth value in faithfully representing the interviewees perceptions, and auditability by including detail of the …
Gap Analysis Of The Vegetation Of The Intermountain Semi-Desert Ecoregion, David M. Stoms, Frank W. Davis, Kenneth L. Driese, Kelly M. Cassidy, Michael P. Murray
Gap Analysis Of The Vegetation Of The Intermountain Semi-Desert Ecoregion, David M. Stoms, Frank W. Davis, Kenneth L. Driese, Kelly M. Cassidy, Michael P. Murray
Great Basin Naturalist
A conservation gap analysis was conducted for the Intermountain Semi-Desert ecoregion to assess the representation of land-cover types within areas managed primarily for biodiversity objectives. Mapped distributions of plant communities were summarized by land-management status categories. The total amount of land permanently protected in the ecoregion is
Winter Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Montane Wyoming Streams, Christopher M. Pennuto, Frank Denoyelles Jr., Mark A. Conrad, Frank A. Vertucci, Sharon L. Dewey
Winter Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Montane Wyoming Streams, Christopher M. Pennuto, Frank Denoyelles Jr., Mark A. Conrad, Frank A. Vertucci, Sharon L. Dewey
Great Basin Naturalist
Macroinvertebrate communities were examined on 4 winter dates over a 4-yr period in 2 high-altitude Rocky Mountain streams to document overwintering assemblages potentially experiencing spring acid pulses. Taxa richness values were comparable to other published lists for alpine and montane stream systems despite the fact that most literature reflected summer collections. Mean benthic density ranged from 1406 to 19,734 organisms/m2, and drift rates ranged from 0 to 1740 organisms/100 m3. Benthic collections showed higher taxa richness than drift collections while the Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera occurred in greater proportions in drift than in benthos. The Nemouridae (Plecoptera), …
Chemical And Biological Characteristics Of Desert Rock Pools In Intermittent Streams Of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Jill S. Baron, Toben Lafrancois, Boris C. Kondratieff
Chemical And Biological Characteristics Of Desert Rock Pools In Intermittent Streams Of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Jill S. Baron, Toben Lafrancois, Boris C. Kondratieff
Great Basin Naturalist
Chemical variability and biological communities of rock pools found in small desert drainage basins of Capitol Reef National Park were characterized over 8 mon in 1994. Neither flooding, drying, nor the presence or absence of surrounding vegetated wetlands had a great effect on chemical composition, which was very dilute and fluctuated somewhat in response to rain events. Neither flooding nor drying affected the composition of biological communities in the pools. Summer storms affected only a few drainages at a time, and only a few study pools of significant volume dried completely during the hot, dry summer. This suggests that only …

Die Stauffacherin Of Washington, D.C. In 1997, Simone Schoch
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This is a brief resume of the history of Die Stauffacherin as the society for Swiss ladies celebrates its 100th year. Die Staujfacherin is the oldest Swiss social society of the Washington, D.C. area. The society was formed at a conference held at the home of Mrs. Emil Holer on January 10th, 1897, under the guidance and leadership of Mr. John Hitz, a former Consul General of Switzerland and dedicated Swiss who worked closely with Alexander Graham Bell in the establishment of the Volta Bureau in Georgetown, Washington D.C., an institution dealing with the problems of the deaf. It is …
Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price
Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This article endeavors to serve as an extension (as well as a confirmation) of my research on the role of warrior clubs during the era of migrations, the so-called Völkerwanderung. In regard to the Völkerwanderung terminology I am relying in this study primarily on the ground-breaking work of the late Hans Georg Wackemagel, whose novel anthropological approach unearthed and analyzed a substantial body of pagan traditions surviving in medieval Helvetia.
Gemeindegeschichte Als Vergleichende Geschichte: The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In East Germany, Bruce W. Hall
Gemeindegeschichte Als Vergleichende Geschichte: The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In East Germany, Bruce W. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
From 1945 until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) endured the hardships of existing as a religious organization under a Communist regime. An evaluation of the LDS Church within the category of general and minority religions, which serves as a microcosmic evaluation of religion in the GDR, constitutes one part of this study. The uniqueness of the LDS Church and its experience - especially its American ties, ironically earlier a liability and later an asset - make it a candidate for a …
