Optimal Control Using A Neural/Evolutionary Hybrid System, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura May 1998

Optimal Control Using A Neural/Evolutionary Hybrid System, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

One of the biggest hurdles to developing neurocontrollers is the difficulty in establishing good training data for the neural network. We propose a hybrid approach to the development of neurocontrollers that employs both evolutionary computation (EC) and neural networks (NN). EC is used to discover appropriate control actions for specific plant states. The survivors of the evolutionary process are used to construct a training set for the NN. The NN leams the training set, is able to generalize to new plant states, and is then used for neurocontrol. Thus the EC/NN approach combines the broad, parallel search of EC with …

English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead

Faculty Publications

One highly visible, often stigmatized feature of Chicano Spanish is lexical innovation due to intimate contact with English and the mainstream culture. As noted in table 1, these Anglicisms are the result of varying degrees of host language adaptation and integration and include at least three distinct types of innovations: the lexical switch, the loanword, and the calque.

Chironomidae (Diptera) Of The Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona, Usa, Ii: Factors Influencing Distribution, Lawrence E. Stevens, James E. Sublette, Joseph P. Shannon

Great Basin Naturalist

Biogeographic, flow regulation (water clarity and temperature), and temporal influences affect the composition of the chironomid midge assemblage in the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead. This assemblage is dominated by euryecious Nearctic and Holarctic orthocladine taxa (23 of 38 total species, total weighted relative abundance [WRA] = 0.972) and includes a minor Neotropical component. Chironomid species richness increases over distance downstream from the dam, and dominance shifts across 3 turbidity segments. Eleven species occur in the cold-stenothermic Clearwater (CW) segment between the dam and the 1st perennial tributary (the Paria River, 26 km from the dam). …

Serge Louis Ballif: A Swiss-American, Jae R. Ballif

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Over a dozen years ago, a young man entered my office. He was a stranger to me. He placed his briefcase on my desk, opened it, and brought out several old books. He talked rapidly, giving me information faster than I could assimilate it. I soon learned that the books were from the shelves of the library at the University of Bern in Switzerland, and that they were written by my ancestors. I also learned that Gabriel Jacob Ballif, my fourth great-grandfather, was the author of one of the books. It is entitled Systematic Physics, and was published in …

The Swiss In Utah: An Introduction, Douglas F. Tobler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Beginning in the mid-18.SOs, Swiss immigrants, virtually all converts from early successful Mormon proselyting in their homeland, began arriving in the Utah Territory. They became part of two larger immigrant streams: one composed of thousands--by the year 1900, some 115,000--of . fellow Swiss who, beginning in colonial times, had found new homes in the United States; and the other, the so-called "Gathering to Zion," the organized emigration of thousands of European Mormon converts, mostly from Protestant countries, in the last half of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century.

Late Pleistocene Microtine Rodents From Snake Creek Burial Cave, White Pine County, Nevada, Christopher J. Bell, Jim I. Mead

Great Basin Naturalist

A total of 395 microtine rodent specimens recovered from Snake Creek Burial Cave (SCBC) are referred to Microtus sp. and Lemmiscus curtatus. Radiocarbon and Uranium series dates indicated an age for these fossils of between 9460 ± 160 yr. B.P. and 15,100 ± 700 yr. B.P. The sample of lower first molars of Lemmiscus includes 4-, 5-, and 6-closed triangle morphotypes. Earlier reports of the 4-closed triangle morphotype are from Irvingtonian deposits in Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico and from early Rancholabrean deposits in Washington. The morphotype is not known in living populations of Lemmiscus. SCBC specimens constitute …

Regional Assessment Of Wadable Streams In Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, G. Wayne Minshall Jan 1998

Regional Assessment Of Wadable Streams In Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, G. Wayne Minshall

Great Basin Naturalist

There has been a resurgence in applying bioassessment techniques for evaluating and monitoring the biological integrity of stream ecosystems. In all cases biological metrics have been refined to account for regional variation in aquatic habitats and fauna. This study evaluated environmental and macroinvertebrate properties for wadable streams in 3 major ecoregions of Idaho: Northern Basin and Range, Snake River Plain, and Northern Rocky Mountain. These 3 ecoregions constitute > 80% of the land area in Idaho. Reference streams were delineated from test streams in each ecoregion using standard habitat assessment protocols (Plafkin et al. 1989). Multiple discriminant analysis effectively determined habitat …

Danebod: A Tradition Of Strength And Spirit, Ann Svendsen

The Bridge

The Danes have always expressed their joys by having

festivals. Fastelavns (Fest before Lent) is celebrated on

Shrove Tuesday . The Fifth of June, a traditional celebration,

remembers the day Denmark got its first constitution and

became a democracy. America's patriotism and freedom are

celebrated on the Fourth of July. The bounties of agriculture

are celebrated with the annual Harvest Festival. Christmas is

celebrated not only in the majesty and solemnity of a candlelight

church service but by dancing around a huge tree when

the children also recieve bags of candy, apples and nuts,

and gifts.

Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen Jan 1998

Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen

The Bridge

"A most desired place for Danish folks to settle." That

keynote launched the campaign to attract Danes to Junction

City. Who was the herald? What were the tidings?

The records are not particularly informative about A. C.

Nielsen. The Junction City Times only used the initials "A. C."

to refer to him. According to his great-grandson, Alfred

Christensen, his first name was Andreas and his middle

name was Christian, both common names in Denmark.

The Bridge

"Way out in the ocean, the water is as blue as the petals of

the most beautiful cornflower and as clear as the cleanest

glass, but it is very deep, deeper than an anchor cable can

reach; many church steeples would have to be placed one on

top of the other in order to stretch from the bottom up to the

surface of the water. Down there live the Merpeople."

Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch Jan 1998

Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The study of ancient literature has been enriched in the second half of the 20th century by the growing awareness and understanding of chiasmus in ancient literature. This form of inverted parallelism has been found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and in many other ancient writings.

The essays in Chiasmus in Antiquity, first published in Germany in 1981, examine the use and effect of chiasmus in the Old and New Testaments and the Book of Mormon, as well as in Sumero-Akkadian, Ugaritic, Talmudic, Greek, and Latin literatures. These essays have been reprinted in this first American edition …

Mormon Culture Meets Popular Fiction: Susa Young Gates And The Cultural Work Of Home Literature, Lisa Olsen Tait Jan 1998

Mormon Culture Meets Popular Fiction: Susa Young Gates And The Cultural Work Of Home Literature, Lisa Olsen Tait

Theses and Dissertations

The few studies of Mormon home literature that have been published to date dismiss it as inferior artistry, an embarrassing if necessary step in the progression towards true Mormon literature. These studies are inadequate, however, because they divorce the texts from their context, holding them up to standards that did not exist for their original audience. Jane Tompkins' theory of texts as cultural work provides a more satisfactory way of looking at these narratives.

Home literature is thoroughly enmeshed in the cultural discourse of its day. Beneath the surface, these didactic stories about young Mormons finding love with their foreordained …

Learning To Learn: The Training Of Missionaries In Language Learning Strategies At The Missionary Training Center, D. Brian Kohler Jan 1998

Learning To Learn: The Training Of Missionaries In Language Learning Strategies At The Missionary Training Center, D. Brian Kohler

Theses and Dissertations

Language learning strategies (LLS) are specific actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques that learners use to improve their rate and level of L2 development. This thesis details the development and validation of a LLS training program designed to measure if training in LLS increases LDS missionaries' awareness of LLS as potential language learning tools. Specifically, it explores the question as to whether missionaries trained in LLS use and intend to use LLS more frequently, more appropriately, and with a greater range than those not trained in LLS.

The development of the LLS training program involved selecting a set of 48 specific …
