Implementing Soil And Water Conservation Production Systems At The Farm Level, Ted L. Napier, Silvana M. Napier Jul 2002

Implementing Soil And Water Conservation Production Systems At The Farm Level, Ted L. Napier, Silvana M. Napier

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Factors influencing adoption of soil and water conservation production systems at the farm level arediscussed in the context of their influence for motivating land owner-operators to adopt and to use conservationtechnologies and practices. Research focused on United States (US) farmers are examined to assess how social, economic, farm structure, and conservation program-participation factors affect adoption behaviors at the farmlevel. Research findings suggest that contemporary conservation programs that place emphasis on the provision ofinformation, education, technical assistance, and economic subsidies probably will not be successful in achievingsocietal conservation goals. Study findings basically demonstrated that factors commonly argued to influenceadoption of conservation production …

An Enterprise-Based Grid Resource Management System, Mark J. Clement, Joseph Ekstrom, Quinn O. Snell, Kevin B. Tew Jul 2002

An Enterprise-Based Grid Resource Management System, Mark J. Clement, Joseph Ekstrom, Quinn O. Snell, Kevin B. Tew

Faculty Publications

As the Internet began its exponential growth into a global information environment, software was often unreliable, slow and had difficulty in interoperating with other systems. Supercomputing node counts also continue to follow high growth trends. Supercomputer and grid resource management software must mature into a reliable computational platform in much the same way that web services matured for the Internet. DOGMA The Next Generation (DOGMA-NG) improves on current resource management approaches by using tested off-the-shelf enterprise technologies to build a robust, scalable, and extensible resource management platform. Distributed web service technologies constitute the core of DOGMA-NG’s design and provide fault …

Machine-Learned Contexts For Linguistic Operations In German Sentence Realization, Eric K. Ringger, Simon Corston-Oliver, Michael Gamon, Robert Moore Jul 2002

Machine-Learned Contexts For Linguistic Operations In German Sentence Realization, Eric K. Ringger, Simon Corston-Oliver, Michael Gamon, Robert Moore

Faculty Publications

We show that it is possible to learn the contexts for linguistic operations which map a semantic representation to a surface syntactic tree in sentence realization with high accuracy. We cast the problem of learning the contexts for the linguistic operations as classification tasks, and apply straightforward machine learning techniques, such as decision tree learning. The training data consist of linguistic features extracted from syntactic and semantic representations produced by a linguistic analysis system. The target features are extracted from links to surface syntax trees. Our evidence consists of four examples from the German sentence realization system code-named Amalgam: case …

Theology His Profession, Botany His Passion: Thomas A. Bruhin, 1835-1895, Herbert Bruhin

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the little town of Schwyz, in the heart of the Swiss Confederation, on April 20, 1642, the joyous strains of Easter Mass had scarcely died away when a cry of "Fire!" was raised. Less than two hours later, the greater part of the town, which lies at the foot of the twin Mythen peaks about an hour's journey from Lake Lucerne, was a smoking ruin. Among the 47 houses destroyed were the presbytery, dating from 1594, the school, two inns, the mill with the mint, and the church with its tower and bells. Fortunately, it had been possible to …

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie May 2002

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie

Theses and Dissertations

In engineering, materials are often assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic; in actuality, material properties do change with sample direction and location. This variation is due to the anisotropy of the individual grains and their spatial distribution in the material. Currently there is a lack of communication between the design engineer, material scientist, and processor for solving multi-objective/constrained designs. If communication existed between these groups then materials could be designed for applications, instead of the reverse. Microstructure sensitive design introduces a common language, a spectral representation, where both design properties and microstructures are expressed.

Using Hill bounds, effective elastic properties …

Do Jaguars (Panthera Onca) Depend On Large Prey?, Carlos A. López González, Brian J. Miller May 2002

Do Jaguars (Panthera Onca) Depend On Large Prey?, Carlos A. López González, Brian J. Miller

Western North American Naturalist

The jaguar (Panthera onca) has been classified as an opportunistic hunter that takes as many as 85 prey species, according to availability. In this study we analyzed jaguar food habits throughout its range to quantify the importance of small, medium, and large prey in the diet. Because peccaries (Tayassu) are present in most studies, we also tested their importance in relation to other prey items. We conclude that jaguars are equally using medium- and large-size prey, with a trend toward use of larger prey as distance increases from the equator. There was no significant difference between …

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds May 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In "Legal Theory and the Rule of Law" Noel Reynolds maintains that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this …

What Makes For Effective Microenterprise Training?, Elaine L. Edgcomb

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

To better understand the dynamics of the market and to improve ACCION's own capacity for delivering credit, the ACCION USA Network (ACCION) hired a research firm to conduct a study estimating the number of microentrepreneurs in the United States, the number that had never received a bank loan for their business, and qualitative information. The firm conducted twenty focus groups of 108 potential and current ACCION customers in New York, Chicago, Houston, San Diego, Atlanta, and Miami. This paper reports the key findings of these focus groups and describes some of the changes ACCION has made in its programs to …

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley Apr 2002

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Therapy in the 21st century cannot be guided soley by attention to intra-psychic or intra-familial factors. As the surrounding social and cultural environment continues to become more unstable, threatening, and dangerous, fear and depression become increasingly common, reality-based responses. These reponses are not a surprise to those acquainted with ancient and modern scriptures, which predict times of unprecedented trouble with accompanying widespread terror and despair; and which also identifies an alternative, more healthful response to the context of our current social enviroment. Finally, it articulates what AMCAP and its individual members can do to ""public peace"" in these times of …

Counting In Social Capital When Easing Agricultural Credit Constraints, Jarka Chloupkova, Christian Bjønskov Apr 2002

Counting In Social Capital When Easing Agricultural Credit Constraints, Jarka Chloupkova, Christian Bjønskov

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) ultimately will be those that are "market-driven." A key element of being market driven is the development of client-responsive products. This paper outlines some of the basic questions and issues that MFIs should address prior to embarking on the product development process. Effectively conducted, systematic product development will result in products that are popular with clients and more cost-effective operations for MFIs. It will also contribute systematically to the long-term sustainability of MFIs.

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance Interventions In Ghana And South Africa: A Synthesis Of Major Impacts And Lessons, Sam Afrane Apr 2002

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance Interventions In Ghana And South Africa: A Synthesis Of Major Impacts And Lessons, Sam Afrane

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

International trade liberalization often implies increased potentials for export production. In order to invest in increasing capacity in agriculture, farmers need to have credit access. However, farmers in Central Europe and East Africa, among other places, are credit constrained, due to collateral reasons. A model illustrates the additional producer gains from having access to credit; the gains are composed of a price effect, an investment effect, and a social-capital externality. The model and empirical findings suggest that improvements of agricultural credit can be achieved by relying on existing social structures, such as farmers' social capital. The paper concludes that such …

The Eros Of International Politics: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek And The Question Of The State In China, Chi-Yu Shih Apr 2002

The Eros Of International Politics: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek And The Question Of The State In China, Chi-Yu Shih

Comparative Civilizations Review

Madame Chiang Kai-shek presented an Asia-first strategy to the US Congress on February 18, 1943. Although her speech was critical of US strategy in ending WWII, she received enormous praise. This article examines how the American media reported her speech and concludes that the emotion her speech aroused in American society could be explained by her feminine appearance, her Americanized perspectives and her self-perceived role as a rescuer in America. Madame Chiang portrayed China as an about-to-be-Westernized society experiencing the threat of annihilation under Japan’s invasion. To save China was to save the hope of American civilization in Asia and …

More Than An Index: The First Reference Guide To The Doctrine And Covenants As A Window Into Early Mormonism, Grant Underwood

BYU Studies

When the Doctrine and Covenants came off the press in Kirtland, Ohio, in September 1835, readers found two reference tools in the back of the book. The first, a three-page section titled "Index," is really more of a table of contents. It lists sequentially the seven lectures "of faith" and the 102 sections of "Part Second" found in that original edition, citing the page number where each begins. Then follows "Contents," also somewhat mislabeled. As seen in the appendix below, "Contents" looks like an index in that it is organized alphabetically. However, entries within each letter grouping are not alphabetized; …

Bertha Von Suttner's "Die Waffen Nieder": A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten W. Vuissa Apr 2002

Bertha Von Suttner's "Die Waffen Nieder": A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten W. Vuissa

Theses and Dissertations

Bertha von Suttner lived in fin-de siècle Vienna. She wrote her romantic novel Die Waffen nieder in 1889 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 for the novel’s influence on the German peace movement. This thesis looks at the effect Suttner’s gender had on the novel and its reception. As a woman writing about peace, Suttner was aware of the societal limitations placed upon her treatment of a political subject. Suttner carefully and consciously chose the novel’s genre. Her synthesis of content and form epitomizes her pacifist and feminist cause. The protagonist’s rhetorical language and the novel’s genre compliment …

Invisible Invasion: Potential Contamination Of Yellowstone Hot Springs By Human Activity, Robert F. Lindstrom, Robert F. Ramaley, Richard L. Weiss Bizzoco Feb 2002

Invisible Invasion: Potential Contamination Of Yellowstone Hot Springs By Human Activity, Robert F. Lindstrom, Robert F. Ramaley, Richard L. Weiss Bizzoco

This report establishes a baseline inventory of microorganisms in acidic hot springs of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The analysis is based on observations carried out over the past 25 years using light microscopy, DNA staining, and electron microscopy of environmental samples. The inventory, while incomplete in that not all organisms have been cultured or examined using genetic approaches, represents a study of several solfatara (acid sulfate) geyser basins in YNP. We found that the types of microorganisms in flowing springs had changed over time. In contrast, no such changes occurred in mixing pools. We solicited opinions of prominent YNP microbiologists …
