Magnificent Obsession: Switzerland's Role In The Future Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page Feb 2002

Magnificent Obsession: Switzerland's Role In The Future Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

History books generally refer to the golden age of French civilization in the seventeenth century as the Age of Louis XIV or the Age of the Sun King, yet, were there any justice, it would be more appropriate to refer to that historical era as the age of Colbert, for it was Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance, whose wise management of the financial machinery of the French state and whose policy of economic self-reliance delivered France from the chaos of the religious and civil wars, stabilized the country and thereby provided the foundation for France's world empire and …

The Rule Of Law: A Reassessment For The Twenty-First Century, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2002

The Rule Of Law: A Reassessment For The Twenty-First Century, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This brief radio address attempts to explain the origins of American liberty and to assess its health at the beginning of the 21st century. The notion of rule of law and the emerging science of constitutionalism enabled America’s founding generation to establish a system of political liberty that continues to stand as a model for all human societies to pursue.

Editor's Introduction: Historical Concreteness, Or Speculative Abstraction?, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2002

Editor's Introduction: Historical Concreteness, Or Speculative Abstraction?, Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Introduction to the current issue, including editor's picks. Peterson publishes his remarks given at a debate organized under the auspices of the Society of Evangelical Philosophers. Basically, he believes that the very choice of “theology” as a focus of the debate grants an importance to that particular area of intellectual activity that Latter-day Saints and early Christians do not share with more sophisticated critics. Organizations attempting a “ministry of reconciliation” instead appear to attack.

Glimpsing Medusa: Astoned In The Troilus, Timothy D. O'Brien Jan 2002

Glimpsing Medusa: Astoned In The Troilus, Timothy D. O'Brien

Quidditas

In these pages I would like to consider the role of Medusa in Chaucer's Troilus—a modest enough enterprise except for the fact that there is not a single reference to this puzzling figure in the entire work, or in any of Chaucer’s other works for that matter. Such an absence does not of course mean absence of influence. After all, Chaucer does not mention Boccaccio, even though his Il Filostrato supplies the narrative material for and fundamental shape of the Troilus. Obscuring authorial indebtedness because of some “anxiety of influence” is one thing; alluding to a figure from …

Faith, Femininity, And The Frontier: The Life Of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, Amy Reynolds Billings Jan 2002

Faith, Femininity, And The Frontier: The Life Of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, Amy Reynolds Billings

Theses and Dissertations

Through examining the life of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, a nineteenth-century Mormon woman, this thesis establishes an analytical framework for studying the lives of Mormon women in territorial Utah. Their faith, femininity, and the frontier form the boundaries in which their lives are studied. Their faith was primarily defined by the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, such as a belief in a restored gospel and priesthood, temples, and polygamy. These unique beliefs also fostered an identity as a chosen people and contributed to hostile feelings from their neighbors. Persecution followed and the Latter-day Saint community …

The Memory And The Legacy: The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade-- The Young Company, 1974-2001, Ruthanne Lay Crow

Theses and Dissertations

“The Memory and The Legacy: The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company 1974-2001,” is a history of the children's theatre of Brigham Young University. The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company acts as a training ground for graduate students working in theatre for young audiences. When directing a production for the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company, students are instructed to perform all functions required of a professional company. As the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company (WWB–TYC) spends much of its performance time on tour, those responsibilities are relegated to the student.

Developed and headed by Dr. Harold R. Oaks of Brigham Young …

Aquifer Geometry, Basement-Topography And Ground Water Quality Around Ken Graben, India Jan 2002

Aquifer Geometry, Basement-Topography And Ground Water Quality Around Ken Graben, India

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In this study a systematic approach has been made for the analysis of Ken graben area by integrating the remote sensing data with the hydrologic data to study the subsurface geological and geomorphological details and to demonstrate the aquifer geometry, ground water quality in the region. The approach involves regional interpretation of geomorphological and structural features exposed at the surface and relating the same to the subsurface. The region has varying thickness of alluvium composed of alternating sand/kankar and clay strata deposited on an uneven basement. In the present study the geological, geomorphological and structural aspects of the terrain have …

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long? James E. Talmage And The Great War, Richard Bennett Jan 2002

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long? James E. Talmage And The Great War, Richard Bennett

Faculty Publications

What is it that is happening? A war greater in area and scale and more fearful in carnage, than any that has ever been since life on the round world began. Five months--no more--have passed since the first gun was fired, and already the list of men who were strong, healthy, capable, keen, five short months ago, and who are now stark in death, outnumbers anything of its kind in human history. And to reckon up the load of sheer blank sorrow in innumerable homes, and the actual but incidental war sufferings, short of death, or possibly worse than death, …

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This article proposes that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this conventionalist concept of law in the sense that …

Expanding The Study And Understanding Of Psychological Control, Brian K. Barber, Roy A. Bean, Lance D. Erickson Jan 2002

Expanding The Study And Understanding Of Psychological Control, Brian K. Barber, Roy A. Bean, Lance D. Erickson

Faculty Publications

The two central purposes of this volume are to review the historical, conceptual, and empirical literatures on parental psychological control and to advance the rapidly growing scientific literature Ono this aspect of the parent-child relationship. Chapter 2 addressed the first task with a review of published material that has specifically investigated psychological control or variables that are conceptually similar to it. From this review of the historical conceptualizations of parental psychological control, we concluded that psychological control is a psychologically oriented, intrusive, constraining, and manipulating form of parental control in which parents appear to maintain their own psychological status at …

Parental Psychological Control: Implications For Childhood Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Nicki R. Crick Jan 2002

Parental Psychological Control: Implications For Childhood Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Nicki R. Crick

Faculty Publications

Children who experience difficulties with peers also tend to experience both concurrent social–psychological difficulties and long-term negative developmental outcomes. Specifically, a significant amount of research has identified peer rejection and isolation as significant precursors to academic troubles and socially deviant behavior (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994; Kupersmidt, Coie, & Dodge, 1990; Parker & Asher, 1987; Parker, Rubin, Price, & DeRosier, 1995). Substantial research and intervention efforts have consequently been dedicated to an understanding of the problem behaviors commonly identified as correlates or antecedents of peer rejection. Childhood aggression is one of the most significant predictors of peer rejection, and has …

Spectral Integration Of Microstructure And Design, Brent L. Adams, B. Henrie, M. Lyon, H. Garmestani, Surya R. Kalidindi Jan 2002

Spectral Integration Of Microstructure And Design, Brent L. Adams, B. Henrie, M. Lyon, H. Garmestani, Surya R. Kalidindi

Faculty Publications

Support of the Army Research Office is greatly appreciated. Mechanical design can be conducted in a framework where consideration of microstructure as a continuous design variable is facilitated by the use of a Fourier space. Selection of the mechanical framework for the problem (e.g., mechanical constitutive model and homogenization relations) dictates the dimensionality of the pertinent microstructure representation. Microstructure is comprised of basic elements that belong to the local state space. Local state includes crystallographic phase and orientation, and other parameters such as composition. The local state space is transformed into an isomorphic set in Fourier space. The universe of …

Turbulent Times: Epic Fantasy In Adolescent Literature, Karie Eliza Crawford Jan 2002

Turbulent Times: Epic Fantasy In Adolescent Literature, Karie Eliza Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a development of the theories presented by Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Bruno Bettelheim concerning archetypes, the anima/animus concept, the Hero Cycle, and identity development through fairy tales. I argue that there are vital rites of passage missing in Anglo-Saxon culture, and while bibliotherapy cannot replace them, it can help adolescents synthesize their experiences. The theories of Jung, Campbell, and Bettelheim demonstrate this concept by defining segments of the story and how they apply to the reader. Because of the applicability, readers, despite their age, can use the examples in the book to help reconcile their own …
