Delimitating Species Boundaries Within The Liomys Pictus- Spectabilis Complex (Rodentia: Heteromyidae), Victoria L. Vance
Delimitating Species Boundaries Within The Liomys Pictus- Spectabilis Complex (Rodentia: Heteromyidae), Victoria L. Vance
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies based on morphological, allozymic and mitochondrial sequence data have indicated that Liomys pictus is paraplyletic relative to L. spectabilis. The purpose of this study was to determine the species boundaries that exist within this complex. I estimated phylogenetic relationships within this complex using sequence data from 1,140 bp of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene and two nuclear introns from engrailed protein (190 bp) and myosin heavy chain (254 bp) genes for approximately 712 individuals representing 82 localities across the range of L. pictus and L. spectabilis. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses suggest that there are …
Bayesian And Positive Matrix Factorization Approaches To Pollution Source Apportionment, Jeff William Lingwall
Bayesian And Positive Matrix Factorization Approaches To Pollution Source Apportionment, Jeff William Lingwall
Theses and Dissertations
The use of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) in pollution source apportionment (PSA) is examined and illustrated. A study of its settings is conducted in order to optimize them in the context of PSA. The use of a priori information in PMF is examined, in the form of target factor profiles and pulling profile elements to zero. A Bayesian model using lognormal prior distributions for source profiles and source contributions is fit and examined.
Jesus Christ As Elder Brother, Corbin Volluz
Jesus Christ As Elder Brother, Corbin Volluz
BYU Studies
Mormons believe that their spirits are sons and daughters of Heavenly Father and that Jesus Christ was the firstborn Son in a premortal existence. As such, He is commonly referred to by Mormons as their elder brother. However, the title does not appear in scripture or in the writings of Joseph Smith. The author traces the first documented usages of the term "elder brother" among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and examines its usage throughout the Church's history. He also considers alternative doctrinal and scriptural interpretations that refute the idea of all mortals being literal …
The Apocryphal Judas Revisited, John W. Welch
The Apocryphal Judas Revisited, John W. Welch
BYU Studies
This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. What drove the writers of the Gospel of Judas to paint the betraying Apostle in a positive light will most likely remain a mystery. One motive may have been the Gnostic obsession with finding new truths and solving mysteries. Another could have been the Gnostics' rejection of mainstream Christianity and its foundation on Apostles like Peter and Paul. Whatever their motives, the writers of the most recently discovered gospel were not the first to fabricate stories …

A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel
A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel
BYU Studies
Due to the popularity of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code and the volume of media attention directed at the Gospel of Judas, both of which suggest searching for hidden meanings in religious traditions and alternative ways of viewing Bible texts and mainstream Christianity, BYU Studies addresses the Gospel of Judas through a series of articles. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel introduces the issue by explaining the Latter-day Saint perspective: some scholars question the New Testament narrative and wonder what other ancient, lost documents were left out, but Latter-day Saints view the Gospel of Judas as a text written by apostate …

"Will The Murderers Be Hung?": Albert Brown's 1844 Letter And The Martyrdom Of Joseph Smith, Timothy Merrill
"Will The Murderers Be Hung?": Albert Brown's 1844 Letter And The Martyrdom Of Joseph Smith, Timothy Merrill
BYU Studies
Albert Brown’s November 11, 1844, letter from Nauvoo to his New York relatives adds significantly to the historical record of Joseph Smith’s martyrdom. Brown wrote from the perspective of one loyal to Joseph Smith. When studied in connection with antagonistic accounts published earlier in BYU Studies, readers of the letter can sense the views, loyalties, and hostilities of the bitterly divided factions that swirled around Joseph Smith as they once did around Jesus Christ.
The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic
The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most significant finds at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize, is a series of superimposed structures that date between 1200 B.C.-A.D. 600 (calibrated). Because it was continuously occupied for over 1800 years, this site provides a unique opportunity to examine long-term socio-economic changes in the eastern Maya lowlands. This thesis is a diachronic study of the chipped stone tool artifacts of Blackman Eddy using technological, attribute, and use-wear analysis. The data collected for this study were examined to see what types of raw materials were used in tool production, what types of tools were produced, how they …
A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed
A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed
Theses and Dissertations
Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …

Periodic Emergence Of Great Historians In The History Of Ancient Greece, Rome And China, Emil Páles, Miroslav Mikulecky Sr.
Periodic Emergence Of Great Historians In The History Of Ancient Greece, Rome And China, Emil Páles, Miroslav Mikulecky Sr.
Comparative Civilizations Review
A periodicity of about 500 years has been discovered in the history of Graeco-Roman and Chinese historiography and documented by means of inferential statistics. Great historians emerged periodically and synchronously in both cultural areas for at least two millennia or longer, although no liaison between historians in the West and Far East is known. It is a surprising fact that this periodicity as well as the times of maximum creativity have been foretold by Babylonian priests, who knew about this rhythm already before 600 B. C. What is the cause of this periodicity and synchronicity is an open question.

Considering The Relationship Between Religion And Psychology, Robert L. Gleave, Dallas R. Jensen, Roger Belisle, Philip L. Nelson
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
The interaction between Religion and Psychology, one of the founding principles of AMCAP, has been addressed several times in AMCAP forums (De Hoyos, 1982) and elsewhere (Richards & Bergin, 2005; Sorensen, 1981; Sperry & Shafranske, 2005). Many may have entered the helping professions to fulfill personal religious needs a well as service goals. The long standing dialogue on the topic of Religion in the helping professions will not end with this article, nor should it ever end in this life. We believe that examining the ways in which Religion and Psychology interface deserves the attention and effort of many minds, …
Theistic Psychotherapy, P. Scott Richards
Theistic Psychotherapy, P. Scott Richards
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
This article describes theoretical and empircal work that has been done during the past few decades to develop a theistic framework and approach for psychotherapy. It provides a brief summary of the reasons a theistic strategy for counseling and psychotherapy is needed, then explores its theological, philosophical, theoretical and empirical foundations. The article suggests future directions of theistic psychotherapy and invites Latter-day Saint professionals to join the effort to bring this framework and approach more fully into the therapeutic mainstream and into their own practices.
Individual Psychological Deficits, William Blake Paul
Individual Psychological Deficits, William Blake Paul
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Traditional psychological theories fail to take into account individual psychological deficits and thus make false conclusions regarding sanity and insanity. These deficits include perception, experience, cognition, and affect. Modified definitions of sanity and insanity require different approaches to treatment of psychological issues.

Vilma Weber Von Webenau : Die Marienlieder, Sommerlieder Für Streichquartett Und Eine Sprechstimme, Carolyn Dehdari
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Vilma von Webenau (1875-1953) is not only worthy of study because of her connection with teacher Arnold Schoenberg. Her music is unique in the era of fin-de-siecle Vienna, but it also holds interest today because of its atmoshpheric and durational complexity, self-composed texts, and harmonic ambiguities. This critical edition seeks not only to present two of WEbenau's seventy works, but also to place Webenau in her historical and musical context. Exploring the aspects of Viennese modernism and the world that created it, I wish to give background to Webenau's life, of which so little is known. In trying to understand …
Irgendwo Muss Man Doch Einmal Hingehoeren': Irmgard Keun As Heiress To The Flaneur.", Matthew D. Embley
Irgendwo Muss Man Doch Einmal Hingehoeren': Irmgard Keun As Heiress To The Flaneur.", Matthew D. Embley
Theses and Dissertations
Flanerie is the art of taking a walk, leisurely observing the movements and spaces of the city. By writing about cityscapes, urban realms, and the condition of society, flaneurs are able to describe the uniqueness of the metropolis and give life to the modern city—creating a photograph of an urban setting. In the early nineteenth century, and even today, flaneur literature has been ultimately dominated by men who have documented their cultural and aesthetic interactions with the city. During these times, unwritten rules have often excluded the female from participating in parts of the urban society. Today, these unwritten rules …
The Rhetoric Of Persecution: Mormon Crisis Rhetoric From 1838-1871, Zachary L. Largey
The Rhetoric Of Persecution: Mormon Crisis Rhetoric From 1838-1871, Zachary L. Largey
Theses and Dissertations
This study is an attempt to (1) minimize the lack of rhetorical scholarship in Mormon studies, and (2) add to the historical study of rhetoric in nineteenth-century America. Since the Mormon Church's establishment in 1830, sermons have been a vital part of the Church's development into a worldwide institution. From the simple testimonial to the more complex doctrinal explication, early Mormon leaders used the art of preaching to spread their message of God and His glories. But rarely have historians or critics focused on the rhetoric—the persuasive techniques—of these sermons. This, perhaps, stems from early Mormonism's general aversion to the …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Of Origin Rituals And Young Adult Attachment Style, Melissa Monell Homer
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Of Origin Rituals And Young Adult Attachment Style, Melissa Monell Homer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family of origin rituals and young adults' attachment style when controlling for parents' attachment style. The sample consisted of 222 paired young adults and one parent (representing 208 families) from 36 different states. Family of origin rituals were measured using the Family Ritual Questionnaire (FRQ) and attachment was measured using the Experiences in Close Relationships Revised (ECR-R) questionnaire. Results indicated a negative relationship between family of origin ritual meaning and young adult attachment anxiety. Results also indicated that family of origin ritual meaning significantly predicted young adult anxiety after …
From Womanhood To Sisterhood: The Evolution Of The Brigham Young University Women's Conference, Velda Gale Davis Lewis
From Womanhood To Sisterhood: The Evolution Of The Brigham Young University Women's Conference, Velda Gale Davis Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
For over twenty-five years the Brigham Young University Women's Conference has given women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) the opportunity to go beyond womanhood and share sisterhood. Spurred by the women's movement of the 1970s, LDS women were pressed to define for themselves what it meant to be a woman in the Church. This discovery and defining process often brought confusion, criticism and conflict. As women sought to reconcile the discrepancies between their own lives and views, their internal definition and the external definition they received from others, a reconstruction began to take …

Encryption Of Computer Peripheral Devices, Kelly Robert Norman
Encryption Of Computer Peripheral Devices, Kelly Robert Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Computer peripherals, such as keyboards, scanners, printers, cameras, and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) typically communicate with a host PC via an unencrypted protocol, leaving them vulnerable to eavesdropping techniques, such as keyloggers. An encryption system was developed that is simple enough to be used in peripherals that do not have large amounts of processing power and memory. A software driver loaded in the operating system of the host computer communicates with a simple 8-bit microcontroller in the peripheral device. The driver handles key generation, key exchange, and provides decrypted data to the operating system. A key exchange protocol allows the …
The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot
The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot
Theses and Dissertations
Divergence of new and old technologies is a source of tremendous innovation potential. As the dizzying pace of technological innovation accelerates indefinitely into tomorrow, not only do new paths diverge exponentially; doors already opened are increasingly abandoned for the allure of things undiscovered. Mature, late-stage life-cycle products left behind in today's fast-paced world open the floodgates to reinvention. This paper tests the hypothesis that innovativeness can be encouraged through the learning and application of universal innovation principles and processes. The implications of this research area are far-reaching. If innovation can be encouraged, then it can likely be taught. If it …
The Role Of The Architect: Changes Of The Past, Practices Of The Present, And Indications Of The Future, Chad B. Jones
The Role Of The Architect: Changes Of The Past, Practices Of The Present, And Indications Of The Future, Chad B. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
For centuries the architect was the master builder; the one who was responsible for both the design and the construction of a project with sufficient construction expertise to oversee the project from inception to completion. Eventually, complexity of projects required a higher level of specialization leading to the separation of the designer and the builder. Since that separation, the role of the designer, or architect, has continued to shift and evolve. In recent history, the architect has been the one selected by a building owner, at the inception of the project, as the professional who is able to assist and …
Exploring Cultural Competence In The Lived Experience Of Instructional Designers, Paul Clinton Rogers
Exploring Cultural Competence In The Lived Experience Of Instructional Designers, Paul Clinton Rogers
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a limited amount of research concerning culture and online education. Although human beings have the ability to transcend past and current environments, helping professions are recognizing the influence of cultural epistemologies on themselves and those they intend to serve. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of additional challenges and concerns present when designing online instruction in a cross-cultural context. The data collected in this study stands as preliminary work to creating a substantive theory regarding the importance of cultural influences in the thinking, practice and lived experience of instructional designers, specifically those who …

Vocabulary Acquisition In Cfl (Chinese As A Foreign Language) Contexts: A Correlation Of Performance And Strategy Use, Ping Mcewen
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was anchored in an inquiry of second language Chinese vocabulary acquisition and learning Chinese as a foreign language. It investigated character density in L2 Chinese vocabulary recognition and production: low character density recognition, high character density recognition, low character density production, and high character density production. It also investigated the effectiveness of strategies that students perceived when faced with learning Chinese. The data was collected from the Chinese program at Brigham Young University across one semester level. Along with this data, students' vocabulary achievement test scores were collected. Descriptive and non-parametric statistics were used. The one-way ANOVA …
Parowan Pottery And Fremont Complexity: Late Formative Ceramic Production And Exchange, Christopher N. Watkins
Parowan Pottery And Fremont Complexity: Late Formative Ceramic Production And Exchange, Christopher N. Watkins
Theses and Dissertations
The Fremont, a Formative culture located in the Eastern Great Basin and Colorado Plateau, have been primarily studied from an ecological perspective. This research addresses issues that are not ecological, the organization of production and exchange of ceramic vessels. Following criteria suggested by Brown et al. (1990), I argue that the following need to be addressed prior to a useful discussion of intergroup trade: the source of the raw materials of the exchanged objects, the associated pattern of distribution, the relative value of the objects, and their context of manufacture, use, and consumption. I specifically address three of these issues …
Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer
Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer
Theses and Dissertations
An important challenge in natural language surface realization is the generation of grammatical sentences from incomplete sentence plans. Realization can be broken into a two-stage process consisting of an over-generating rule-based module followed by a ranker that outputs the most probable candidate sentence based on a statistical language model. Thus far, an n-gram language model has been evaluated in this context. More sophisticated syntactic knowledge is expected to improve such a ranker. In this thesis, a new language model based on featurized functional dependency syntax was developed and evaluated. Generation accuracies and cross-entropy for the new language model did not …
Education In Transition: Church And State Relationships In Utah Education, 1888-1933, Scott Clair Esplin
Education In Transition: Church And State Relationships In Utah Education, 1888-1933, Scott Clair Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Utah's current educational systems were largely shaped by a transitional era that occurred during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A time when the region itself moved from territorial to state status, the dominant religion in the area, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), likewise changed in its role in Utah society. Previously dominating most aspects of life, the Church was forced to reevaluate its place in society due to greatly increased secular power and context. Educational changes, as harbingers of larger societal shifts, are illustrative of such paradigm changes. During the four decade period …
