Tools To Support A Model-Based Methodology For Benefit/Cost/Risk Analysis Of Wastewater Treatment Systems, Lorenzo Benedetti, Davide Bixio, Filip Claeys, Peter A. Vanrolleghem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a set of tools developed to support an innovative four-step methodology to design and upgrade wastewater treatment systems. For the first step of data collection and data reconstruction, two different tools have been developed, one for situations where data are available (using data reconstruction methods) and another for situations where no data are (yet) available (based on a simple draining catchment model driven by actual local rain series). The second step, i.e. model building, implied the development of a new simulation platform and of grid software to deal with the considerable simulation load generated by the third …

Public participation to environmental planning and management decisions, as suggested by localAgenda 21 processes, can be supported by software tools developed with a cyclic interaction with all thestakeholders and simple enough to be quickly operated by a large set of heterogeneous users. This also helpspreventing their rapid aging and their excessive dependence on changing technologies. We experimented thedevelopment of such software tools using an Office type environment to store data, analyse, andgeographically represent the effects of alternative decisions and html files to help utilizing the software anddistributing the information over the Internet. Surface Flows Modelling: Cellular Automata Simulations Of Lava, Debris And Pyroclastic Flows, M. V. Avolio, G. M. Crisci, D. D’Ambrosio, S. Di Gregorio, Giulio Iovine, V. Lupiano, R. Rongo, W. Spataro
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Cellular Automata (CA) are a computational paradigm, a valid alternative to standard methods with differential equations for modelling and simulating complex systems, whose behaviour may be specified in terms of local interactions in a context of discrete time and space. Some surface flows may be approximated to such a type of complex systems. The Empedocles Research Group developed an empirical methodology for modelling this kind of macroscopic phenomena. The CA space for surface flows is divided in hexagonal cells, whose specification (state) describes the physical characteristics (substates) relevant to the evolution of the system and relative to the space portion …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper we present a systematic approach to the development of the lava flow hazard map forthe Mount Etna, the most important active volcano in Europe. The basic idea is to determine the hazard zonesby simulating the lava flows originated from a number of sample points localized in regions at high densityof vents, called eruption zones. The key choice is the adoption of a probabilistic model for the simulation ofthe lava flow. In the paper we outline the characteristics of the model, called ELFM, and how it has beenvalidated. On the other side, for the determination of the eruption …
Taking End-Users Into Account - Reshaping The Environmental Decision Support Research Agenda, Brian Mcintosh
Taking End-Users Into Account - Reshaping The Environmental Decision Support Research Agenda, Brian Mcintosh
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is a clear need for the environmental modelling and decision support research community to become more sensitive to the needs and working practicies of potential 'end-user' organisations. One aspect of becoming more sensitive will be making more explicit our own reasons for developing a model or decision support tool (DST) in the first place. Are we trying to (i) develop tools to be used by researchers with results used by external organisations, or to; (ii) develop tools for use directly by external organisations to support current actions, or are we trying to; (iii) develop tools for use directly by …

Ranking Regions Using Cluster Analysis, Hasse Diagram Technique And Topology, Guillermo Restrepo, Rainer Brüggemann
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We developed the theoretical background of the application of Hierarchical Cluster Analysis HCA to the improvement of the understanding of Hasse Diagrams coming from the ranking process developed for the application of the Hasse Diagram Technique HDT. The use of HCA is based on the idea of the reduction of the number of elements considered in a poset (partially ordered set) by the selection of representatives from the original set to rank. We showed that the clusters arisen from HCA can be interpreted as similarity classes where one of its members (the nearest to the centre of the cluster) can …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
SENSOR is an Integrated Project within the 6th Framework program of the EU. The major outcome is the modeling approach Sustainable Impact Assessment Tool (SIAT). The knowledge-based model SIAT enables end users to assess the impacts of land-use relevant EU-policy strategies. The results are presented for European administrative regions (NUTS), though for specific issues the grid resolution of 1x1 km will be used. The six sectors agriculture, forestry, energy, transport, nature conversation and tourism are considered. Analytically, SIAT focuses on cross-sectoral trade offs and side effects of the impacts of new introduced EU-policies. The model concept is based on a …

An Operational Scheme For Dynamic Resource Management In Case Of Natural Disaster Events, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi, Antonio Sgorbissa
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The management of the resources engaged in emergencies due to the occurrence of very intense natural events requires the acquisition and processing of a huge number of heterogeneous data. Such data, both of deterministic and random nature, generally refer to different spatial and temporal scales. Considering the three main frameworks in which a natural risk scenario can be classified (i.e., preventive, emergency, and post-emergency phases), risk assessment has to be followed by a decision-oriented phase, whose objective is the selection of the optimal actions to undertake, on the basis of the available information. In the paper, the conceptual scheme and …

A Decision Support System For Energy Production From Renewable Resources: Logistics Aspects Of Sustainable Forest Biomass Collection, R. Minciardi, M. Robba, Roberto Sacile, F. Frombo, Fulvia Rosso
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The consequences of the use of traditional fossil fuels has led, in the last years, the European Union to promote and encourage the development and the use of renewable energies rather than the traditional ones. Energy production from forest biomass does not involve the CO2 increase in the atmosphere, contributing in this way to the duties assumed by the European Community during the International Conference of Kyoto (1997). The developed DSS, that is a generalization and the further research activity presented in a previous work by the same authors (Freppaz et al. [2004]), is based on the integration of Geographic …

River Flow Simulation Within Ungauged Catchments In Lebanon Using A Semi-Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Model, A. Hreiche, C. Bocquillon, W. Najem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Development of methodologies to achieve a priori parameter estimation of hydrological models is fundamental in ungauged basins. This study shows that a semi-distributed physical model can be applied to ungauged watersheds in Lebanon and its parameters can be estimated using physical approach and remote sensing techniques. Most of the Lebanese coastal watersheds are affected by an important seasonal snow cover. The snowmelt contributes up to about two thirds of the total yearly discharge of the catchments. Most snowmelt water infiltrates the limestone and discharges at several karsts springs. A physical model based on the snowmelt mechanisms using the standard energy …

Bottom-Up, Decision Support System Development : A Wetland Salinity Management Application In California's San Joaquin Valley, N. W. T. Quinn
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Seasonally managed wetlands in the Grasslands Basin of California’s San Joaquin Valley provide food and shelter for migratory wildfowl during winter months and sport for waterfowl hunters during the annual duck season. Surface water supply to these wetland contain salt which, when drained to the San Joaquin River during the annual drawdown period, negatively impacts downstream agricultural riparian water diverters. Recent environmental regulation, limiting discharges salinity to the San Joaquin River and primarily targeting agricultural non-point sources, now addresses return flows from seasonally managed wetlands. Real-time water quality management has been advocated as a means of matching wetland return flows …

Construction Of A Degree-Day Snow Model In The Light Of The Ten Iterative Steps In Model Development, Teemu Kokkonen, Harri Koivusalo, Tony Jakeman, J. P. Norton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Jakeman et al. (2005) discuss minimum standards for model development and reporting and offer an outline of ten iterative steps to be used in model development. They present the main steps and give examples of what each step might include (especially what choices are to be made), without attempting the formidable task of compiling a comprehensive check list of the model-development process. This study reports construction of a simple degree-day snowmelt model in the light of the ten iterative steps. Such a modelling approach has been widely used in operational hydrology, where the motivation is to produce as reliable as …

Evaluation Of A Physically Based Distributed Hydrological Model, Btopmc, For Different Physiographic Zones Of Nepal, K. N. Dulal, S. Shrestha, K. Takeuchi, H. Ishidaira
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Many rivers in Nepal are ungauged and there is an urgent need to develop a model for those ungauged basins in order to properly use the vast natural resources of Nepal. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the distributed hydrological model, BTOPMC (Block-wise use of TOPMODEL with Muskingum-Cunge method) for different physiographic zones of Nepal and then to develop a regional model, which can be used for prediction in ungauged basins. It is advantageous to use BTOPMC for poorly gauged or ungauged basins as it utilizes various global datasets available in public domain. In this …

Uncertainty Management, Spatial And Temporal Reasoning, And Validation Of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, Rick Sojda, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Peter Struss, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There are inherent open problems arising when developing and running Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems (IEDSS). During daily operation of IEDSS several open challenge problems appear. The uncertainty of data being processed is intrinsic to the environmental system, which is being monitored by several on-line sensors and off-line data. Thus, anomalous data values at data gathering level or even uncertain reasoning process at later levels such as in diagnosis or decision support or planning can lead the environmental process to unsafe critical operation states. At diagnosis level or even at decision support level or planning level, spatial reasoning or temporal …

Neural Identification Of Fuzzy Anomalies In Pressurized Water Systems, Joaquín Izquierdo, R. Pérez, P. A. López, P. L. Iglesias
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The objective of a Water Supply System (WSS) is to convey treated water to consumers through a pressurized network of pipes. A number of meters and gauges are used to take continuous or periodic measurements that are sent via a telemetry system to the control and operation centre and used to monitor the network. Using this typically limited number of measures together with demand predictions the state of the system must be assessed. Suitable state estimation is of paramount importance in diagnosing leaks and other anomalies in WSS. But this task can be really cumbersome, if not unattainable, for human …

Without A Common Mental Model A Dss Makes No Sense (A New Approach To Frame Analysis Using Mental Models), M. J. Kolkman, A. Van Der Veen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In order to understand why the use of model software and its results in decision making is surrounded with a diversity of problems, this paper presents a new theoretical framework. The framework is based on the notions of frame and mental model that are commonly used in social sciences and psychology. Mental models are found to guide the activities of knowledge producing scientists, DSS builders, decision makers and stakeholders. These activities are described in a modelling cycle and a decision making cycle. The model – both software and mental – functions as an intermediate for knowledge transfer. The theoretical framework, …

Bridging The Gaps Between Design And Use: Developing Appropriate Tools For Environmental Management And Policy, Brian Mcintosh, Alexey Voinov, Court Smith, Carlo Giupponi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Integrated assessment models, decision support systems (DSS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are examples of a growing number of computer-based tools designed to provide scientific decision and information support to people within environmental management and policy organizations. It is recognized that end-user organizations are often not as receptive to using such tools as desired but that little research has been done to uncover and understand the reasons why. As part of the process to understand what tools are used and why, and conversely what tools are not used and why, this paper presents some views on the issues involved. No …

Consistency Versus Optimality In Environmental Model Identification Under Uncertainty, T. Wagener, P. Dornsife, M. Clark
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Current model identification strategies often have the objective of finding the model or model structure which provides the best performance in reproducing the observed response of a system at hand. Such a strategy typically favours more complex (bottom-up) models with a higher degree of freedom and thus larger flexibility. While this bias can be reduced through punishing models for being more complex, real advancements in our understanding with respect to appropriate system representations are made if we quantify the extent to which our model is consistent with the available data. In particular the idea of an optimal parameter set is …
A Novel Method To Estimate The Model Uncertainty Based On The Model Errors, Durga Lal Shrestha, Dimitri P. Solomatine
A Novel Method To Estimate The Model Uncertainty Based On The Model Errors, Durga Lal Shrestha, Dimitri P. Solomatine
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a novel method for estimating “total” predictive uncertainty using machinelearning techniques. By the term “total” we mean that all sources of uncertainty are taken into account, includingthat of the input and observed data, model parameters and structure, without attempting to separate thecontribution given by these different sources. We assume that the model error, which is mismatch between theobserved and modelled value reflects all sources of uncertainty. Fuzzy c-means clustering was employed tocluster the input space into different zones or clusters assuming that the all the examples those belong to theparticular cluster have similar model errors. The prediction …

Ten Iterative Steps In Development And Evaluation Of Environmental Models, A. J. Jakeman, R. A. Letcher, J. P. Norton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models are increasingly being relied upon to inform and support natural resource management. They are incorporating an ever broader range of disciplines and now often confront people without strong quantitative or model-building backgrounds. These trends imply a need for wider awareness of what constitutes good model-development practice, including reporting of models to users and sceptical review of models by users. To this end the paper outlines ten basic steps of good, disciplined model practice. The aim is to develop purposeful, credible models from data and prior knowledge, in consort with end-users, with every stage open to critical review and revision. …

Modeling Soil-Water Dynamics For Diverse Environmental Needs, Pierre Martin, Rabi H. Mohtar, Pascal Clouvel, Erik Braudeau
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Accurate representation of the top soil matrix with special attention to the scales present is important to the dynamics of water flow and fate of pollution at field, farm and watershed scales. It is also important from an agronomic stand point since agriculture still constitutes the main source of pollution at a time when many agronomic models still use empirical notions of soil hydraulic properties. The soil dynamics literature describes soil hydraulic properties independently from the soil-water medium hydro-structural dynamics. This leads to an empirical approach to represent and estimate soil hydro-structural properties such as shrinkage, water potential, field capacity, …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Over recent years a huge library of data mining algorithms has been developed to tackle a variety of problems in fields such as medical imaging and network traffic analysis. Many of these techniques are far more flexible than more classical modelling approaches and could be usefully applied to data-rich environmental problems. Certain techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks, Clustering, Case-Based Reasoning and more recently Bayesian Decision Networks have found application in environmental modelling while other methods, for example classification and association rule extraction, have not yet been taken up on any wide scale. We propose that these and other data …

The Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment (AGWA) tool is a GIS-based hydrologic modeling tool developed jointly by the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development, USDA Agricultural Research Service, and University of Arizona. It was initially designed as a research tool for assessing the hydrologic impacts associated with landscape change at multiple scales, a context in which process-based models are a necessity. As potential management applications of the tool became more readily apparent and partners with specific management objectives were identified, AGWA was transformed into a highly versatile tool for environmental management and planning. A thoughtful software design facilitates linkages between …
