Consistency Versus Optimality In Environmental Model Identification Under Uncertainty, T. Wagener, P. Dornsife, M. Clark
Consistency Versus Optimality In Environmental Model Identification Under Uncertainty, T. Wagener, P. Dornsife, M. Clark
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Current model identification strategies often have the objective of finding the model or model structure which provides the best performance in reproducing the observed response of a system at hand. Such a strategy typically favours more complex (bottom-up) models with a higher degree of freedom and thus larger flexibility. While this bias can be reduced through punishing models for being more complex, real advancements in our understanding with respect to appropriate system representations are made if we quantify the extent to which our model is consistent with the available data. In particular the idea of an optimal parameter set is …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Model Uncertainty For Forecasting Hydrologic Change, D. J. Semmens, M. Hernandez, D. C. Goodrich, W. G. Kepner
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
GIS-based hydrologic modeling offers a convenient means of assessing the impacts associated with land-cover/use change for environmental planning efforts. Alternative future scenarios can be used as input to hydrologic models and compared with existing conditions to evaluate potential environmental impacts as part of this process. Model error, however, can be significant and potentially compounded when projecting future land-cover/use change and management conditions. To address this problem we have utilized repeat observations of land cover/use as a proxy for projected future conditions. A systematic analysis of model efficiency during simulations based on observed land-cover/use change is used to quantify error associated …

Optimal Regional Partitioning For Wildfire Risk Characterization, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The efficiency of fire prevention and fire-fighting organization are strictly related with the identification of the elementary Administrative Units, whose physical characteristics and number/quality of resources affect significantly the occurrence and the dynamics of the considered phenomenon. In fact, wildland fire risk is determined by several factors such as vegetation, local climate condition, topography, socio-economical aspects, and, of course, wildfire fighting available resources. A power law distribution can be used to represent the frequency-area relationship empirical wildfire data. Thus, it is possible to think of characterizing a region by its wildland fire regime, which can be defined by the power …

Risk Assessment Module Of The Iwa/Cost Simulation Benchmark: Validation And Extension Proposal., Jordi Dalmau, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Joaquim Comas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The IWA/COST simulation benchmark platform has been widely used to evaluate and compare different activated sludge control strategies. The IWA/COST simulation benchmark provides performance indices like the effluent water quality, operating costs and controller performance (Copp, 2002), all of them quantitative. However, these indices do not take into account the biomass separation related problems which at present cannot be quantitatively modelled. A qualitative Risk Assessment Module adaptable to any simulation benchmark platform has been developed for the activated sludge systems. As a consequence, and in order to improve the quantitative performance indices, lately the anaerobic digestion model number 1 (ADM1) …

The accidental release of radioactive substances into the environment leads to the necessity of applying suitable countermeasures for the restoration of the polluted environment. However, despite their obvious benefits, such interventions may result in detrimental effects of economic, ecological and social nature that must be carefully evaluated. MOIRA–PLUS is a PC-based user-friendly, Computerised Decision Support System (CDSS) that helps decision makers to choose optimal countermeasure strategies for different kinds of aquatic ecosystems and contamination scenarios. CDSS MOIRA-PLUS is based on: a) Validated models to evaluate the behaviour of radionuclides in contaminated water bodies and biota and to assess the effect …

Modeling Soil-Water Dynamics For Diverse Environmental Needs, Pierre Martin, Rabi H. Mohtar, Pascal Clouvel, Erik Braudeau
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Accurate representation of the top soil matrix with special attention to the scales present is important to the dynamics of water flow and fate of pollution at field, farm and watershed scales. It is also important from an agronomic stand point since agriculture still constitutes the main source of pollution at a time when many agronomic models still use empirical notions of soil hydraulic properties. The soil dynamics literature describes soil hydraulic properties independently from the soil-water medium hydro-structural dynamics. This leads to an empirical approach to represent and estimate soil hydro-structural properties such as shrinkage, water potential, field capacity, …

The objective of a Water Supply System (WSS) is to convey treated water to consumers through a pressurized network of pipes. A number of meters and gauges are used to take continuous or periodic measurements that are sent via a telemetry system to the control and operation centre and used to monitor the network. Using this typically limited number of measures together with demand predictions the state of the system must be assessed. Suitable state estimation is of paramount importance in diagnosing leaks and other anomalies in WSS. But this task can be really cumbersome, if not unattainable, for human …

Construction Of A Degree-Day Snow Model In The Light Of The Ten Iterative Steps In Model Development, Teemu Kokkonen, Harri Koivusalo, Tony Jakeman, J. P. Norton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Jakeman et al. (2005) discuss minimum standards for model development and reporting and offer an outline of ten iterative steps to be used in model development. They present the main steps and give examples of what each step might include (especially what choices are to be made), without attempting the formidable task of compiling a comprehensive check list of the model-development process. This study reports construction of a simple degree-day snowmelt model in the light of the ten iterative steps. Such a modelling approach has been widely used in operational hydrology, where the motivation is to produce as reliable as …
A Novel Method To Estimate The Model Uncertainty Based On The Model Errors, Durga Lal Shrestha, Dimitri P. Solomatine
A Novel Method To Estimate The Model Uncertainty Based On The Model Errors, Durga Lal Shrestha, Dimitri P. Solomatine
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a novel method for estimating “total” predictive uncertainty using machinelearning techniques. By the term “total” we mean that all sources of uncertainty are taken into account, includingthat of the input and observed data, model parameters and structure, without attempting to separate thecontribution given by these different sources. We assume that the model error, which is mismatch between theobserved and modelled value reflects all sources of uncertainty. Fuzzy c-means clustering was employed tocluster the input space into different zones or clusters assuming that the all the examples those belong to theparticular cluster have similar model errors. The prediction …

Ten Iterative Steps In Development And Evaluation Of Environmental Models, A. J. Jakeman, R. A. Letcher, J. P. Norton
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models are increasingly being relied upon to inform and support natural resource management. They are incorporating an ever broader range of disciplines and now often confront people without strong quantitative or model-building backgrounds. These trends imply a need for wider awareness of what constitutes good model-development practice, including reporting of models to users and sceptical review of models by users. To this end the paper outlines ten basic steps of good, disciplined model practice. The aim is to develop purposeful, credible models from data and prior knowledge, in consort with end-users, with every stage open to critical review and revision. …

Without A Common Mental Model A Dss Makes No Sense (A New Approach To Frame Analysis Using Mental Models), M. J. Kolkman, A. Van Der Veen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In order to understand why the use of model software and its results in decision making is surrounded with a diversity of problems, this paper presents a new theoretical framework. The framework is based on the notions of frame and mental model that are commonly used in social sciences and psychology. Mental models are found to guide the activities of knowledge producing scientists, DSS builders, decision makers and stakeholders. These activities are described in a modelling cycle and a decision making cycle. The model – both software and mental – functions as an intermediate for knowledge transfer. The theoretical framework, …

Taking End-Users Into Account - Reshaping The Environmental Decision Support Research Agenda, Brian Mcintosh
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is a clear need for the environmental modelling and decision support research community to become more sensitive to the needs and working practicies of potential 'end-user' organisations. One aspect of becoming more sensitive will be making more explicit our own reasons for developing a model or decision support tool (DST) in the first place. Are we trying to (i) develop tools to be used by researchers with results used by external organisations, or to; (ii) develop tools for use directly by external organisations to support current actions, or are we trying to; (iii) develop tools for use directly by …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper we present a systematic approach to the development of the lava flow hazard map forthe Mount Etna, the most important active volcano in Europe. The basic idea is to determine the hazard zonesby simulating the lava flows originated from a number of sample points localized in regions at high densityof vents, called eruption zones. The key choice is the adoption of a probabilistic model for the simulation ofthe lava flow. In the paper we outline the characteristics of the model, called ELFM, and how it has beenvalidated. On the other side, for the determination of the eruption …

Bridging The Gaps Between Design And Use: Developing Appropriate Tools For Environmental Management And Policy, Brian Mcintosh, Alexey Voinov, Court Smith, Carlo Giupponi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Integrated assessment models, decision support systems (DSS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are examples of a growing number of computer-based tools designed to provide scientific decision and information support to people within environmental management and policy organizations. It is recognized that end-user organizations are often not as receptive to using such tools as desired but that little research has been done to uncover and understand the reasons why. As part of the process to understand what tools are used and why, and conversely what tools are not used and why, this paper presents some views on the issues involved. No …

Development Of An Integrated Decision Support System For Water Quality Control In The Upper Litani Basin, Lebanon, Hamed Assaf, Mark Saadeh
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Compared to the limited water supply in the Middle East, Lebanon is perceived to be a water rich country. Yet, it faces a growing water supply problem due to many factors including increases in demand, inadequate investment in infrastructure, and deterioration of water quality. Being the foremost water resource in Lebanon, the Litani River is at the center of several major water supply and irrigation schemes. However, the river water quality is severely impacted by the current practice of releasing untreated sewage into its water body, specifically in its upper basin which is home to about half a million inhabitants. …

Bottom-Up, Decision Support System Development : A Wetland Salinity Management Application In California's San Joaquin Valley, N. W. T. Quinn
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Seasonally managed wetlands in the Grasslands Basin of California’s San Joaquin Valley provide food and shelter for migratory wildfowl during winter months and sport for waterfowl hunters during the annual duck season. Surface water supply to these wetland contain salt which, when drained to the San Joaquin River during the annual drawdown period, negatively impacts downstream agricultural riparian water diverters. Recent environmental regulation, limiting discharges salinity to the San Joaquin River and primarily targeting agricultural non-point sources, now addresses return flows from seasonally managed wetlands. Real-time water quality management has been advocated as a means of matching wetland return flows …

Our investigation of over one hundred Czech companies with a certified Environmental Management System (EMS) has identified ten main barriers to EMS implementation. They obstruct the adoption of EMS principles and decrease environmental awareness of internal interested parties. We have developed a modified holistic model of creating and overcoming barriers in EMS implementation and in its continuous improvement through being based on five basic pillars and five interconnected business processes. Related to this is the development of a prototype for a web-based information system that supports overcoming barriers in the process of EMS implementation. The prototype, using mainly Java technologies, …

An Operational Scheme For Dynamic Resource Management In Case Of Natural Disaster Events, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi, Antonio Sgorbissa
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The management of the resources engaged in emergencies due to the occurrence of very intense natural events requires the acquisition and processing of a huge number of heterogeneous data. Such data, both of deterministic and random nature, generally refer to different spatial and temporal scales. Considering the three main frameworks in which a natural risk scenario can be classified (i.e., preventive, emergency, and post-emergency phases), risk assessment has to be followed by a decision-oriented phase, whose objective is the selection of the optimal actions to undertake, on the basis of the available information. In the paper, the conceptual scheme and …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Cellular Automata (CA) are a computational paradigm, a valid alternative to standard methods with differential equations for modelling and simulating complex systems, whose behaviour may be specified in terms of local interactions in a context of discrete time and space. Some surface flows may be approximated to such a type of complex systems. The Empedocles Research Group developed an empirical methodology for modelling this kind of macroscopic phenomena. The CA space for surface flows is divided in hexagonal cells, whose specification (state) describes the physical characteristics (substates) relevant to the evolution of the system and relative to the space portion …

Parameter, Data Input And Structural Uncertainty Propagating Through Coupled Models In A River Water Quality Modelling System, K. -E Lindenschmidt
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper investigates three sources of uncertainty in a river water quality modelling system: parameters, input data and model structure. Emphasis is placed on structural uncertainty since this aspect has received less attention in the literature compared to parameter and input data uncertainty. Model structure is understood to be the equations and algorithms used to describe processes of substance transport and transformation in a model. Focus is given to two processes: i) sorption of heavy metals to suspended solids as a function of the fraction of organic carbon constituting the solids and ii) phytoplankton growth limitation by light extinction through …

Many rivers in Nepal are ungauged and there is an urgent need to develop a model for those ungauged basins in order to properly use the vast natural resources of Nepal. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the distributed hydrological model, BTOPMC (Block-wise use of TOPMODEL with Muskingum-Cunge method) for different physiographic zones of Nepal and then to develop a regional model, which can be used for prediction in ungauged basins. It is advantageous to use BTOPMC for poorly gauged or ungauged basins as it utilizes various global datasets available in public domain. In this …
