Liquid Dielectric Spectroscopy And Protein Simulation, Brett Lee Mellor
Liquid Dielectric Spectroscopy And Protein Simulation, Brett Lee Mellor
Theses and Dissertations
Protein electrical properties have been studied using dielectric relaxation measurements throughout the past century. These measurements have advanced both the theory and practice of liquid dielectric spectroscopy and have contributed to understanding of protein structure and function. In this dissertation, the relationship between permittivity measurements and underlying molecular mechanisms is explored. Also presented is a method to take molecular structures from the Protein Data Bank and subsequently estimate the charge distribution and dielectric relaxation properties of the proteins in solution. This process enables screening of target compounds for analysis by dielectric spectroscopy as well as better interpretation of protein relaxation …
Investigation Of A Planetary Differential For Use As A Continuously Variable Transmission, Austin B. Randall
Investigation Of A Planetary Differential For Use As A Continuously Variable Transmission, Austin B. Randall
Theses and Dissertations
With gas prices on the rise, the demand for high-mileage and low pollution vehicles has taken on an unprecedented role in our society. The production and implementation of electric and hybrid-electric vehicles has recently been a large focus of all major automobile manufacturers. Although these new vehicles have begun to solve much of the expensive fuel consumption and air pollution problems that our economy faces, the initial cost of these vehicles has proven to still be too expensive to capture a significant portion of the market. The further advancement of this technology must not only continue to focus on better …
Malingering Detection Measure Utility And Concordance In A University Accommodation-Seeking Student Population, Nichole M. Loser
Malingering Detection Measure Utility And Concordance In A University Accommodation-Seeking Student Population, Nichole M. Loser
Theses and Dissertations
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, universities and colleges are required to provide accommodative services for students with disabilities. Many studies have examined the role of malingering mental health symptoms in order to obtain psychotropic medications, but very little research has been done on the role of accommodations as secondary gain in students who may malinger learning disabilities. This study sought to examine both the usefulness of implementing specific malingering detection measures in psychological evaluations with university students and the agreement of those measures within the population. Archival data was gathered from a university accommodation clinic that provided free …

Science Self-Efficacy And School Transitions: Elementary School To Middle School And Middle School To High School, Brandi Lue Lofgran
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the science self-efficacy beliefs of students before and after transitions from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school. The purpose was to explore whether those beliefs changed with grade level, gender, and ethnicity. Data were collected through a modified Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (Muris, 2001), which was adapted to focus on science self-efficacy. Multiple ordinary least squares regression was used to analyze the data. All grade levels showed a clear decline in science self-efficacy after sixth grade with females, Hispanic students, and ninth graders showing the greatest decline in science self-efficacy.
Total Character Groups, Chelsea Lorraine Kennedy
Total Character Groups, Chelsea Lorraine Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
The total character of a finite group G is the sum of the irreducible characters of G. When the total character of a finite group can be written as a monic polynomial with integer coefficients in an irreducible character of G, we say that G is a total character group. In this thesis we examine the total character of the dicyclic group of order 4n, the non-abelian groups of order p^3, and the symmetric group on n elements for all n ≥ 1. The dicyclic group of order 4n is a total character group precisely when n is congruent to …
Healing The Cartesian Split: Understanding And Renewing Pathos In Academic Writing, Travis Washburn
Healing The Cartesian Split: Understanding And Renewing Pathos In Academic Writing, Travis Washburn
Theses and Dissertations
There have always been rogues who dared to go against the traditional "intellectual" writing style of science and academia, a style that seems bent on transcending the "merely personal." Those who take this risk are embracing the rhetorical tradition of pathos, one that goes as far back as Aristotle. Current academic trends support a genre devoid of pathos and lacking true ethos—a deviation from classic rhetoric, and one that supports the Cartesian split of mind-body dualism. Neurological studies done by Antonio Damasio and others suggest that a holistic view is a more accurate picture of how a human soul functions. …

Knowledge Discovery For Biodiversity: From Data Mining To Sign Management, Noel Conruyt, David Grosser, Régine Vignes Lebbe
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Knowledge discovery from data in environmental sciences is becomingmore and more important nowadays because of the deluge of information found indatabases of digital ecosystems, coming altogether from institutions and amateurs. For example in biodiversity science, all these data need to be validated byspecialists with the help of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems(IEDSSs), then enhanced and certified into qualitative knowledge before reachingtheir audience. Data mining through classification or clustering is the dedicatedinductive process of grouping descriptions based on similarity measures, thenbuilding classes and naming them. Later, the formed concepts can be reused foridentification purpose with new observations. The problem is that when …

A Methodology For The Characterization Of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, A. Cabello, F. Sem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The issue of the paper is to propose a methodology to characterize and describe any Intelligent Environmental Decision Support System (IEDSS). This characterization is necessary to analyse the IEDSSs built until now, to improve their abilities and their current output information. The methodology proposes a selection of a set of features to characterize all IEDSS, and in general, IDSS. The main characteristics of Intelligent Decision Support Systems have been identified through an accurate analysis of cognitive tasks, and several layers involved in this kind of systems. The resulting analysis has been implemented in a form. This form takes into account …
Modelling Land Use Change And Its Spatial Variability For Ecosystem Services Assessments, Marie Castellazzi, I. Brown, L. Poggio, Alessandro Gimona
Modelling Land Use Change And Its Spatial Variability For Ecosystem Services Assessments, Marie Castellazzi, I. Brown, L. Poggio, Alessandro Gimona
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecosystem services (ES) assessments are relying upon scenarios to explore the impacts of potential land use changes [UK NEA 2011], and to explore the possible land use pathways leading to desirable ES targets (using a normative approach). The scenario framework acknowledges the high uncertainty inherent to land use changes [Goodwin and Wright 2010] and a stochastic approach to land use modelling would provide some useful support. Moreover, for ES assessment, land use modelling needs to consider that i) some services are dependent upon fine land use mosaics (e.g. pollination, water quality), ii) decision-making is linked to spatial units, and iii) …

A companion modeling process about water resources supply and demand at the scale of a catchment in partnership with the catchment management institution and with intermediary level stakeholders of the different sectors of water use, production and distribution in the territory is being held in the Thau catchment, near Montpellier in South of France. This companion modeling process has been shaped by both a scientific questioning about interactions between land and water dynamics and governance within a catchment and the history of collaborations between the research team and the case study partners. It was initiated by the catchment management institution’s …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A domain-specific language (DSL) is usually a concise, declarative language that strongly emphasizes a particular problem domain. DSL methods and implementations in general are widely prototyped and applied for creating elegant ways to express properties, relationships, and behavior of real-world models. This paper introduces DSL use for creating models and simulations within the Object Modeling System 3 (OMS3) modeling framework. In OMS3, various DSL concepts have been adopted to complement general-purpose modeling languages such as Java, FORTRAN, and C. Design patterns, such as the builder pattern, have been adopted through the DSL to support the setup of complex simulations for …

Integrated Ecological Modelling For Decision Support In The Integrated Urban Water System Modelling Of The Drava River (Varazdin, Croatia), Javier E. Holguin, Gert Everaert, Lorenzo Benedetti, Youri Amerlinck, Peter L. M. Goethals
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Legal physical-chemical emission limits are traditionally used forassessing the effectiveness of urban sanitation infrastructure. However, thereceiving water’s ecological aspects are disregarded with this conventionalapproach. European legislation (i.e. Water Framework Directive-WFD) now has anintegrated approach of river management, which considers the concept ofecological status. Furthermore, the WFD urges the adoption of a combined analysisof emission limits values and physical-chemical and ecological aspects of thereceiving waters and encourage the availability and use of decision support tools forwater management such as simulation models. Croatia has signed agreements tojoin the European Union (EU) and thus taken up the obligation to coordinate itslegislation with EU …
Design Of A Software Framework Based On Geospatial Standards To Facilitate Environmental Modelling Workflows, Vanessa Watson, Kym S. Watson
Design Of A Software Framework Based On Geospatial Standards To Facilitate Environmental Modelling Workflows, Vanessa Watson, Kym S. Watson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Environmental modelling workflows are often tedious due to heterogeneity of data sources, types and formats. This paper discusses how a software framework based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards may facilitate the workflow steps and improve their flexibility by supporting data access, processing, and decision-making. The software framework is designed based on OGC standards, which can be realized in any modern programming language, to encapsulate processing algorithms (so called fusors) that fuse the environmental input data and run a model based computation. Such a software framework can improve the integration of new data sources into environmental applications as well as …
Computer Assisted Dynamic Adaptive Policy Design For Sustainable Water Management In River Deltas In A Changing Environment, Jan Kwakkel, Marjolijn Haasnoot
Computer Assisted Dynamic Adaptive Policy Design For Sustainable Water Management In River Deltas In A Changing Environment, Jan Kwakkel, Marjolijn Haasnoot
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Sustainable water management in a changing environment full of uncertainty is a profound challenge. To deal with uncertainties, dynamic adaptive policies can be used. Such policies can change over time in response to how the future unfolds, to what we learn about the system, to changes in environment, and to changes in societal preferences. This paper presents a model driven approach that supports the development of dynamic adaptive policies, and illustrates the approach using a hypothetical case. The key idea of the approach is that the dynamic behavior of a fast and simple Integrated Assessment Meta Model (IAMM) is explored …

Linking The Grs Photochemical Scheme With The Daumod Urban Atmospheric Dispersion Model, Andrea L. Pineda Rojas, Laura E. Venegas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The DAUMOD model is a simple urban scale atmospheric dispersion model which was originally developed to estimate inert air pollutant ground-level background concentrations resulting from a great number of area emission sources. The model has been tested against observations from Buenos Aires and different cities of Europe and the US, and has been extensively used during the past two decades to study the air pollution related to NOx species in the city of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas. The Generic Reaction Set (GRS) constitutes a simplified scheme of the most complete photochemical mechanisms. Due to its simplicity and its ability …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Redd+ Interventions On Livelihoods, Social Equity And Effectiveness, Robin Matthews, Innocent Bakam, George Dyer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Globally, deforestation and forest and peatland degradation account for around 15% of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) could be a cost-effective way of reducing this figure. Discussion on REDD+ has focused largely on the institutional architectures required to channel international finance streams to individual countries, neglecting how these funds will be used at the national level to encourage behavioural change. For REDD+ to work, benefits must flow through a long chain of actors, from national, regional and local governments, industries and businesses, to farmer groups and indigenous communities. The factors influencing decision-making at …
Trade-Offs In Land Allocation For Bioenergy Production, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso
Trade-Offs In Land Allocation For Bioenergy Production, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Biomass as a renewable energy source is scarce and its exploitationmust be accurately planned in order to maximize the energy produced, the GHGemissions avoided, and the sustainability of other ecological services. By-productsand residues are one of the best sources of biomass since they are readilyavailable at no or at a very low cost. Moreover, in some cases, the use of residueshas positive co-benefits. This is the case of manure: typically its disposalconstitutes a cost to the farm, whilst its energy use facilitates the disposal, produces energy and decreases GHG emissions. However, the conversionefficiency of manures alone is very low and, therefore, …
Dealing With Uncertainty In Ecosystem Model Scenarios: Application Of Singlemodel Ensemble Approach, Gideon Gal, Vardit Makler-Pick, Noam Shachar
Dealing With Uncertainty In Ecosystem Model Scenarios: Application Of Singlemodel Ensemble Approach, Gideon Gal, Vardit Makler-Pick, Noam Shachar
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Complex ecosystem models are often used as a means for gaining insight into ecosystem processes and as a management tool for resource managers. The uncertainty associated with these models present, however, a major stumbling block in their acceptance as a main stream management tool. Even if used, there is often a lack of confidence in the results and predictions due to the uncertainty. In addition, the difficulty in estimating model uncertainty and resulting error associated with simulation outcomes further limits model use. The lake ecosystem model DYRESM-CAEDYM (DYCD) includes hundreds of parameters and processes and inherently incorporates a large degree …
Gilded Age Travelers: Transatlantic Marriages And The Anglophone Divide In Burnett's The Shuttle, Rebecca L. Peterson
Gilded Age Travelers: Transatlantic Marriages And The Anglophone Divide In Burnett's The Shuttle, Rebecca L. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1907 novel, The Shuttle, is an important contribution to turn-of-the-century transatlantic literature because it offers a unifying perspective on Anglo-American relations. Rather than a conventional emphasis on the problematic tensions between the U.S. and Britain, Burnett tells a second story of complementary national traits that highlights the dynamic aspect of transatlantic relations and affords each nation a share of their Anglophone heritage. Burnett employs transatlantic travel to advance her notion of a common heritage. As a tool for understanding the narrative logic of The Shuttle, Michel de Certeau's theory of narrative space explains how Burnett uses movement …

Modeling Water Flow And Nutrient Losses (Nitrogen, Phosphorus) At A Nested Meso Scale Catchment, Germany, Sanyuan Jiang, Michael Rode
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Eutrophication of stream water due to nutrient inputs has become a worldwide aquatic problem. Understanding nutrient transport processes and the relationship with hydrologic processes is important for water resource management and prediction of stream water quality under climate and land use change. In this study we used the integrated process-based hydrologic and water quality model HYPE (Hydrological Predictions for the Environment) to simulate water flow and stream water nutrient concentrations (nitrogen and phosphorus) at a meso scale nested catchment (Selke) in Germany. The hydrograph was represented well with NSCE of 0.84 and was characterized by high flow during winter due …

The objective of this research is to develop and simulate a model of theecosocial concept of populations’ vulnerability under the impact of environmentalchange in the Peruvian Cordillera Blanca, through a social vulnerability indicator.Numerous studies provide evidence for the impact of climate change on nature, water scarcity, and social problems; people living near glaciers are particularlyaffected by these natural hazards. The Peruvian Cordillera Blanca, an area withone fourth of the world’s tropical glaciers and its population are highly at risk. Theapplications of fuzzy algorithms to research works in this area, and even more tosocial and ecological aspects, is a new approach to …

Water law in South Africa subscribes to the Integrated Water ResourcesManagement (IWRM) paradigm by seeking to provide equitable access of water toall users including the ecosystem. The management of water resources to be inline with IWRM policies is seen to be a major challenge in South Africa due toincreasing demands, problematic water quality impacts and concerns over futureclimate change and development impacts. Because of limited resources withinwater resources management, simple models may be more useful than complexmodels (Young et al. 1996). An existing yield model, the Water ResourcesModelling Platform (WReMP) is well established within water resourcemanagement in South Africa, and …
Modelling Coastal Vulnerability And Adaptation To Sea Level Rise, Oz Sahin, Sherif Mohamed
Modelling Coastal Vulnerability And Adaptation To Sea Level Rise, Oz Sahin, Sherif Mohamed
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Coastal regions are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) therefore developing and implementing effective adaptation alternatives is crucial for their future development. However, there is uncertainty in the timing, duration, spatial location and extent of SLR and storms. The complexity that arises from climate, coastal systems and their interactions in space and time can easily become overwhelming for decision makers to investigate the aspects of adaptation alternatives thoroughly. Dilemmas confronting decision makers are: how to adapt and when to adapt to SLR? Considering the complexity and dynamic nature of coastal systems interacting and changing over time, this paper introduces a …

This paper presents assimilation of radar reflectivity using the Local Analysisand Prediction System (LAPS). Assimilation process has two stages. The first stage isdecoding of the reflecitivity from. vol or .xml formatted files (produced is by the nativeradar software) and writing it in the netCDF format, the format of all LAPS input data. The second stage is LAPS’s reflectivity analysis. Its first phase is projecting the dataonto the horizontal planes without taking into account data points present above andbellow. In the second phases vertical interpolation is performed, thus obtaining 3D fieldof the reflectivity. This separation in the data analysis greatly increases the …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this article we envision factors and trends that shape the next generation of environmental monitoring systems. One key factor in this respect is the combined effect of end-user needs and the general development of IT services and their availability. Currently, an environmental (monitoring) system is assumed to be reactive. It delivers measurement data and computational results only if the user explicitly asks for it either by query or subscription. There is a temptation to automate this by simply pushing data to end-users. This, however, leads easily to an “advertisement strategy”, where data is pushed to end-users regardless of users’ …
