Routines within organizations enable members to execute their work plans and achieve their strategic objectives. Because routines involve replication and repetition, some researchers have regarded them as rather mindless patterns of action, but recently scholars have begun to view routines as “mindful” accomplishments—especially routines that are changeable and open to variation1. Although there has been widespread attention to evolution and variation in routines, few studies have specified how routines actually stay the same, or how they are maintained2. Our research suggests that though the late Kirtland period was very difficult for the faith of the Latter-Day Saints, a large majority continued to identify with the Church through the Nauvoo period. Significant numbers eventually gathered with the Saints in Utah.1

The March of Dimes’ Teddy Bear Den (TBD) program aims to promote effective maternal health care among socially disadvantaged Hispanic women. The program has benefitted many women since its inception in 2004, yet there was no research to support the program’s effectiveness or to better understand the women’s needs. Many diseases that affect humankind are poorly understood. The medical and scientific communities alike rely heavily on basic scientific research to fuel dissemination of knowledge to said communities for further applied research, including clinical and pharmaceutical efforts. Diabetes is still poorly understood despite its prevalence in today’s society. In lieu of the research that has been done so far, PAS kinase is becoming an increasingly promising subject for research as a possible therapeutic target for diabetes. Crowdsourcing is a term used to describe an emerging new set of activities that organizations engage in to leverage the power of the Internet in bringing people together. Crowdsourcing generally consists of placing some type of “open call” on the internet. People around the globe with internet access then respond to the call. Some collaborate and/or compete to create new ideas, services, or products on behalf of an existing company. Others refine existing work or data, such as through feedback, data entry, or proof-reading.

I was awarded an ORCA grant to study the causes of support for separatist political parties in Belgium. In January of 2011, I had the opportunity to travel to Belgium as an intern for a political party at the European Parliament in Brussels. The grant that I received helped to make this possible and gave me the chance to see the conflict between northern Belgium (Flanders) and southern Belgium (Wallonia) first hand. The usefulness of digitized documents is directly related to the quality of the extracted text. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has reached a point where well-formatted and clean machine- printed documents are easily recognizable by current commercial OCR products; however, older or degraded machine-printed documents present problems to OCR engines resulting in word error rates (WER) that severely limit either automated or manual use of the extracted text. Major archives of historical machine-printed documents are being assembled around the globe, requiring an accurate transcription of the text for the automated creation of descriptive metadata, full-text searching, and information extraction. This dissertation reports on the technology of cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) including 1) stabilized lyophilized cell-free systems and 2) enhanced heterogeneous cell extracts. This work further considers applications of CFPS systems in 1) rapid vaccine development, 2) functional virus-based nanoparticles, 3) site-specific protein immobilization, and 4) expanding the language of biology using unnatural amino acids. CFPS technology is a versatile protein production platform that has many features unavailable in in vivo expression systems. The primary benefit cell-free systems provide is the direct access to the reaction environment, which is no longer hindered by the presence of a cell-wall. The “openness" …

A fundamental question in biology is how proteins, which are synthesized by the ribosome as a linear sequence of amino acids, fold into their native functional state. Many proteins require the assistance of molecular chaperones to maneuver through the folding process to protect them from aggregation and to help them reach their native state in the very concentrated protein environment of the cell. This study focuses on the roles of Phosducin-like Protein 1 (PhLP1) and Programmed Cell Death Protein 5 (PDCD5) as molecular co-chaperones of the Cytosolic Chaperonin Complex (CCT).Signaling in retinal photoreceptors is mediated by canonical G protein pathways. …

In Thanksgiving And Praise: Prayer, Rhetoric, And Congressional Thanksgiving Proclamations, Samuel Wells, Dr. Christopher Hodson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With my grant I analyzed how early congressional Thanksgiving proclamations textually moved away from overtly Christian wording while simultaneously retaining a rhetorical Christian foundation. To illustrate my point I chose to analyze said declarations as textual examples of prayer. In order to do so, I first examined Congress’s original declaration of 1777. Second, by building upon a 1739 tract by Isaac Watts entitled “A Guide to Prayer,” I employed later proclamations to illustrate the genre’s continued reliance upon the rhetoric of prayer in the face of shifting ideological norms.
