Comparative Cytotoxicity Of An Fda-Approved Cancer Drug To Extracts Of Atriplex Confertifolia On Human Breast And Cervical Cancer Cells, Christopher James Capua

Theses and Dissertations

The severity and number of people affected by cancer is a worldwide problem with millions of people affected annually. The search for treatment and cures of cancer continues to be a global effort. As part of this global effort, many natural products have been tested against cancer cell lines, most from plants located in tropical regions. However, this study reports that extracts of Atriplex confertifolia, a native North American plant, has significant bioactivity against human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, 435, and 231, and HeLa cells (cervical cancer cells). The bioactivity of A. confertifolia extracts of these cells lines was …

Late Homestead Period Householding At Benmore And Tintic Junction: Comparing Rural And Sub-Rural Communities In Tooele And Juab Counties, Utah, Jennifer Aurora Beard Jul 2008

Late Homestead Period Householding At Benmore And Tintic Junction: Comparing Rural And Sub-Rural Communities In Tooele And Juab Counties, Utah, Jennifer Aurora Beard

Theses and Dissertations

Historical archaeologists are turning more and more attention to the study of capitalism in post-Industrialist nations. Rhoda Halperin's concept of householding considers networks of families or other groups that operate outside of the mainstream capitalist economy. The concept is most often applied in anthropological contexts, but may be a useful tool in the study of homesteading in the American West. At Benmore, a small homesteading community in southern Rush Valley, Tooele County, Utah, 20 families sought to survive by dry farming in a marginal environment. The enthusiasm of such residents as Israel Bennion, whose journal provides deep insight into the …

Genetic Analysis Of The Role Of Smpb In Establishing The Reading Frame On Tmrna, Talina Christensen Watts Jul 2008

Genetic Analysis Of The Role Of Smpb In Establishing The Reading Frame On Tmrna, Talina Christensen Watts

Theses and Dissertations

Ribosomes translate the genetic information encoded by mRNA into proteins. Defective mRNAs can cause stalling of translating ribosomes. The molecule tmRNA (transfer-messenger RNA) rescues stalled ribosomes in eubacteria. Together with its protein partner SmpB, tmRNA mimics a tRNA by entering the ribosomal A site and linking an alanine residue to the growing polypeptide chain. The ribosome then abandons the defective mRNA template and resumes translation on tmRNA, adding ten more amino acids to the nascent polypeptide. As a result of tmRNA action, stalled ribosomes are released and recycled, the defective mRNA is destroyed, and the aborted protein product is tagged …

The Effect Of A Pseudopalate On Voiceless Obstruent Production: A Spectral Evaluation Of Adaptation, Karie Lindsay Dean Jul 2008

The Effect Of A Pseudopalate On Voiceless Obstruent Production: A Spectral Evaluation Of Adaptation, Karie Lindsay Dean

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies in speech communication have provided valuable findings concerning the kinematic nature of speech articulation. This type of research often involves introducing an oral device to the vocal tract such as lingual pellets, magnets, and different forms of pseudopalates to track the movement and placement of the articulators. This study examined the effect of an electropalatography (EPG) pseudopalate on the production of five voiceless obstruents (/p, t, k, s/ and /sh/). Acoustic recordings from 20 adult speakers with typical speech production were made during three different speaking conditions: prior to pseudopalate placement, immediately after placement, and following 20 minutes …

Ion Permeation Through Membrane Channels: Molecular Dynamics Simulations Studies, Morad Mustafa Jul 2008

Ion Permeation Through Membrane Channels: Molecular Dynamics Simulations Studies, Morad Mustafa

Theses and Dissertations

Molecular dynamics simulation was used to study ion permeation through different membrane proteins embedded in a lipid bilayer (DMPC) with different saline solutions. The potential of mean force (PMF) for ion transport was obtained by umbrella sampling simulations. A revised MacKerell force field for tryptophan residues was studied using gramicidin A (gA) channel as a test model. The revised force field contribution to the Na+ PMF was consonant with the prediction from the experimental results, but in stark contrast to the prediction of the CHARMM force field, version 22, for the tryptophan side-chain. A new grid-based correction map algorithm by …

Competitive Exclusion Of Cyanobacterial Species In The Great Salt Lake, Hillary Christine Roney Jul 2008

Competitive Exclusion Of Cyanobacterial Species In The Great Salt Lake, Hillary Christine Roney

Theses and Dissertations

Under Gause's principle two species cannot indefinitely occupy the same niche. The north and south arms of Great Salt Lake are separated by a rail causeway, resulting in salinity differences and color variation between the arms. Farmington Bay is also separated from the south arm by a vehicular causeway to Antelope Island. These causeways allow examination of competitive exclusion of cyanobacteria in the hypersaline environment of the Great Salt Lake. Cyanobacterial distributions partially map salinity, with Aphanothece halophytica proliferating in the north arm, and Nodularia spumigena in the south arm. I hypothesized that cyanobacterial species abundant north of the railway …

Using A Chelator-Buffered Nutrient System To Study Phosphorus, Manganese And Zinc Interactions In Russet Burbank Potato, Steven A. Barben

Theses and Dissertations

Potato production requires high phosphorus (P) application with potential negative environmental or nutritional consequences for potato as well as for subsequent crops. Impacts of high available P on yield and plant nutrition of species in potato cropping rotations are inadequately understood, and could result in antagonistic interactions with cationic micronutrients such as zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn). Three hydroponic experiments were conducted with Russet Burbank potato to elucidate P and Zn relationships and associated interactions with other nutrients. In the first experiment, P solution concentration was constant at 256 µM while Zn concentration varied: 0.1, 2, 6, 18, 54, 162 …

Effect Of Ca And Ph On Disease Severity Of Pink Rot Phytophthora Erythroseptica In Russett Norkotah Potato Solanum Tuberosum, Jared H. Benson

Theses and Dissertations

Phytophthora erythroseptica Pethyb. is a devastating fungal pathogen of potato (Solanum tuberosum). The pathogen causes a disease known as pink rot. Pink rot results in necrosis and decay of tubers; and is responsible for major losses pre and post harvest. Attributes of the disease are progressing toward epidemic proportions. To help prevent such dramatic outbreaks of the disease, understanding the factors associated with incidence will provide opportunities to control the pathogen. A link between pH and disease severity has been observed. We studied the effects of pH and Ca to determine their influence on disease development. Low pH and Ca …

A Compliant Threshold Acceleration Sensor Integrated With Radio Frequency Identifiable Tags, Benjamin L. Todd Jul 2008

A Compliant Threshold Acceleration Sensor Integrated With Radio Frequency Identifiable Tags, Benjamin L. Todd

Theses and Dissertations

Fully compliant bistable mechanisms have been proposed to be used as threshold accelerometers. The advantages to using these devices are that they require no external power to operate and maintain their sensing state. Using this characteristic the devices can be integrated with passive radio frequency identification tags (RFID). This allows for the sensing package to lay dormant with no maintenance needed until the sensor is read by the RFID reader. This thesis presents a successfully fabricated and integrated threshold accelerometer with a passive RFID tag. This in turn has been successfully read with an RFID reader and shown to act …

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a pleiotropic cytokine with several CNS physiological and pathophysiological actions including sleep, memory, thermal and appetite regulation. Short interfering RNAs (siRNA) targeting TNFα were incubated with cortical cell cultures and microinjected into the primary somatosensory cortex (SSctx) of rats. The TNFα siRNA treatment specifically reduced TNFα mRNA by 45% in vitro without affecting interleukin-6 or gluR1-4 mRNA levels. In vivo the TNFα siRNAα reduced TNFα mRNA, interleukin-6 mRNA and gluR1 mRNA levels compared to treatment with a scrambled control siRNA. After in vivo microinjection, the density of TNFα-immunoreactive cells in layer V of the …

Model Based Sediment Quality Management On River Basin Scale, Bernhard Westrich Jul 2008

Model Based Sediment Quality Management On River Basin Scale, Bernhard Westrich

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Contaminated sediment mobility plays an important role in river engineering and water resources management. Numerical models are powerful tools to be used for analysis, prediction and remediation issues in sediment management. Erosion stability plays a key role for contaminated sediment mobility assessment. Experimental investigations on erosion stability of undisturbed sediments reveal a large spatial variability of sediment properties. A 1-d and a 2-d numerical transport model is applied to analyse erosion and sedimentation processes of contaminated sediments in the Upper River Rhine reservoirs and in the river Elbe focussing on the effect of the near bank low flowing water zones.

Freshwater is vital for human civilization. Growing population and societal development demand for more water resources. Freshwater is not considered globally scarce, but its distribution across the planet is not even and many countries suffer from water shortage. Human activities constantly produce an impact upon natural waters causing their destruction, degradation and pollution. Freshwater is a multi-purpose resource and this circumstance dictates a need to coordinate the interests of various water users. Integrated catchment management is a framework with the explicit objective to improve natural resources management on a catchment basis. Water resources are an integral part of ecosystems and …

Currently, AqLib implements seven configurations for nitrogen removal (DN, DN2, RDN, SDN, DRDN, RSDN and DRSDN), five configurations for phosphorous removal (A2O, Bardenpho, Johannesburg, UCT and MUCT), and the anaerobic digestion process. Moreover, an Internet-based service (AqquaStudy) has been deployed so that AqLib can be remotely accessed from any standard web-browser.

The Benchmark Simulation Models – A Valuable Collection Of Modelling Tools, John B. Copp, Ulf Jeppsson, Peter A. Vanrolleghem Jul 2008

The Benchmark Simulation Models – A Valuable Collection Of Modelling Tools, John B. Copp, Ulf Jeppsson, Peter A. Vanrolleghem

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Over a decade ago, the concept of a tool that could be used to objectivelyevaluate the performance of control strategies through simulation using a standard modelimplementation was introduced for activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. Thatconcept resulted in the development of the Benchmark Simulation Model No 1 (BSM1),the subsequent BSM1_LT and most recently BSM2. Debate about the need and applicationof these models has dogged the development effort since it first began with practitionerssuggesting that these models are only academically applicable, have been conceived of forpublication generation purposes and provide limited benefit to the applied modellingcommunity. The authors of this paper, as …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The development of more efficient and least cost energy management interventions is of great importance for isolated energy systems. Islands are typical examples of isolated regions, often highly dependent on imported fossil fuels but with a significant and often unexploited Renewable Energy (RE) potential. This paper presents a least cost planning approach towards the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in such systems, which is applied to the island of Lemnos, Greece. The approach involves the application of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) and Incremental Cost Analysis (ICA) for screening possible alternatives and determining the most economically efficient and effective plan for …

Developing Bayesian Network Models Within A Risk Assessment Framework, C. A. Pollino, Barry T. Hart Jul 2008

Developing Bayesian Network Models Within A Risk Assessment Framework, C. A. Pollino, Barry T. Hart

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The risk assessment framework is increasingly being applied to examine both human and non-human stressors on ecological systems. Risk-based decision-making aims to quantify the likelihood of a threat occurring, the consequences of this to an ecological system, process or value, and the associated uncertainty in the predictions. Until recently, the ability to predict changes in dynamic ecosystems due to stressors was limited by both the poor understanding of the drivers of ecological processes and structure, and the lack of modelling tools that could represent such complexity with associated uncertainties. However, the recent growth in the use of Bayesian network tools …

Bayesian Challenges In Integrated Catchment Modelling, Vikas Kumar, A. Holzkämper, B. Surridge, P. I. Rockett, M. Niranjan, D. N. Lerner Jul 2008

Bayesian Challenges In Integrated Catchment Modelling, Vikas Kumar, A. Holzkämper, B. Surridge, P. I. Rockett, M. Niranjan, D. N. Lerner

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Bayesian Networks (BNs) are increasingly being used as decision support tools to aid the management of the complex and uncertain domains of natural systems. They are particularly useful for addressing problems of natural resource management by complex data analysis and incorporation of expert knowledge. BNs are useful for clearly articulating both the assumptions and evidence behind the understanding of a problem, and approaches for managing a problem. For example they can effectively articulate the cause-effect relationships between human interventions and ecosystem functioning, which is a major difficulty faced by planners and environment managers. The flexible architecture and graphical representation make …

Our line of work is based on the development of methodologies of Artificial Intelligence and Statistics to solve problems of Knowledge Discovery of Data as is shown by …

Assessment And Management Of Environmental Risks Resulting From Operation Of Large-Scale Irrigation Delivery Systems: A Case Study In Southern Italy, D. Zaccaria, M. Scimone Jul 2008

Assessment And Management Of Environmental Risks Resulting From Operation Of Large-Scale Irrigation Delivery Systems: A Case Study In Southern Italy, D. Zaccaria, M. Scimone

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The cumulative effects of irrigation delivery schedule on aquifer and onagricultural soils were analysed in a study conducted on a large-scale irrigated area locatedin southern Italy. These effects likely result from the inadequate operation of the largescaleirrigation delivery system. Agriculture in the study area is market-oriented and tightlydependant on irrigation, due to hot and dry climatic conditions and to the poor distributionof seasonal rainfall. The study area is characterized by fairly high levels of groundwatersalinity likely due to intensive exploitation of the aquifer by farmers especially during peakirrigation demand periods. The concentration of groundwater pumping during these periodsresults most likely …

Towards A Simulation-Based Study Of Grassland And Animal Diversity Management In Livestock Farming Systems, G. Martin, Michel Duru, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Jp Rellier, Jp Theau, O. Thérond, L. Hossard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In less-favored areas, livestock production involves the management of native vegetation as a resource base. A challenging issue in such systems regards the design of efficient and sustainable management strategies that make it possible to exploit the diversity of grasslands and herd batches over different time scales. This paper describes the conceptual approach that supports the representation and simulation of farm-scale models of grassland-based livestock systems in the SEDIVER project. It enables the coupling of species-rich grasslands and livestock models with sophisticated decision-making models. The latter embed a representation of management strategies that specify in a flexible and adaptive manner …

The target of this paper is to present a prototype of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support System (IEDSS) that guarantees robust and independent monitoring and real-time control of membrane bioreactors, and at the same time allows remote supervision of the integrated operation of the biological process and the physical separation by the membranes. The rule-based and model-based systems include empirical and tacit knowledge to relate parameters of biological control to the membrane unit operation. At the same time, the IEDSS is meant to be equipped with an automatic learning module of the membranes life cycle that records and analyses accumulated experiences …

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur Jul 2008

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Despite recent technological advances, proliferation of online databases and community data collection and modeling efforts, the environmental observatory and modeling communities remain fragmented due to the lack of summaries of available observations data, differences in information models and metadata, lack of common data discovery and access protocols tuned to model requirements, and significant semantic differences in data description. However, purely technical solutions for interoperability are insufficient for establishing a shared interoperable infrastructure. The establishment of any technology in a population of potential adopters takes place within a context of social and economic processes. A community cannot become instantaneously aware of …

Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley Jul 2008

Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Transformation of spatial distributions of species is a key element for understanding global and regional impact of climate change on environment in the future. Yet little is known about current distributions of species, especially in relation with physical parameters of environment. This is primarily due to limited availability of data on species occurrences, which prevents reconstruction of their geographical distribution with standard methods of spatial statistics. To address this problem, specialized applications called distributional models, based on the hypothesis of fundamental niche, are being developed. We have built a new tool for predicting species’ geographical distributions based on presence-only data. …

Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Biochemical, Design And Operational Parameters Of The Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2, Lorenzo Benedetti, Damien J. Batstone, Bernard De Baets, Ingmar Nopens, Peter A. Vanrolleghem

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Wastewater treatment plant control and monitoring can help to achieve good effluent quality, in a complex, highly non-linear process. The Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2) is a useful tool to competitively evaluate plant-wide control on a long-term basis. A key component to characterise the system for control is outputparameter sensitivity. This paper brings the results of a global sensitivity analysis performed on the BSM2 model in its open loop version, by means of Monte Carlo (MC) experiments and linear regression. This study presents methods that were applied to make computationally demanding MC experiments on such a complex model feasible, …

Lessons Learned From Experiments In Auto-Calibration Of Large Scale Environmental And Hydrological Models, David Swayne, Markiyan Sloboda, Simon Hood, Vimal Sharma, William Booty, David Lam Jul 2008

Lessons Learned From Experiments In Auto-Calibration Of Large Scale Environmental And Hydrological Models, David Swayne, Markiyan Sloboda, Simon Hood, Vimal Sharma, William Booty, David Lam

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Recent work by the authors has identified the need to efficiently auto-calibrate models of considerable complexity, in order to investigate future water quality and quality concerns in the Great Lakes’ Basin. Initial results in the use of standard models such as AGNPS and SWAT have yielded somewhat disappointing results. The calibration process has been cumbersome, and predictions based on outputs from, say, a watershed model input to a lake circulation model have generally proven problematic: If the flows are correct, the loadings are not, and so forth.

A New Definition Of Minimum Sustainable Flow Based On Water Quality Modelling And Fuzzy Processing, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, A. Nocita, E. Giusti, M. Saccà Jul 2008

A New Definition Of Minimum Sustainable Flow Based On Water Quality Modelling And Fuzzy Processing, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, A. Nocita, E. Giusti, M. Saccà

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water resources in temperate and Mediterranean regions are increasingly scarce and water authorities need efficient criteria for the management of this precious commodity, guaranteeing an amount of water which ensures the preservation of aquatic life. This minimal discharge is referred to as the Minimum Sustainable Flow (MSF) and has been subject to many differing definitions in differing contexts. Gradually the purely hydraulic definition, very popular in the past, has given way to more comprehensive indicators taking into account the river ecosystem, and fish in particular, leading to very popular methods such as the IFIM (Instream Flow Incremental Methodology). The drawback …

Simulation Study On Spatial And Temporal Changes Of Factories In An Industry District, Hiroyasu Nagata, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura Jul 2008

Simulation Study On Spatial And Temporal Changes Of Factories In An Industry District, Hiroyasu Nagata, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Factories or plants are built or dismantled for various complex reasons. Understanding the construction and dismantlement processes of factories is one of complicated economic problems. The present article has two purposes: one is to explore the spatial and temporal changes of factories at Hamamatsu city in Japan, and the other is to represent the spatial and temporal changes by a simple simulation model. The time dependence of factory number can be classified into two periods. Before the collapse of Japanese stock market (1990), the number of factories increases smoothly. On the contrary, after the collapse, it rapidly decreases. The spatial …
