An Introductory Study Of Solid Materials For Capture And Catalysis Of Waste Stream Chemicals, Steven Kyle Butler Jun 2018

An Introductory Study Of Solid Materials For Capture And Catalysis Of Waste Stream Chemicals, Steven Kyle Butler

Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous catalysts are key materials in research and industry. Herein we study two materials in different stages of development toward being applied as heterogeneous catalysts. First, MoO3SnO2 was synthesized and studied as a catalytic system similar to Sn-beta zeolites. While the Mo-based catalyst did not show similar activity to Sn-beta, it did show interesting reactivity in activating carbonyls and oxidizing organic substrates. Second, a method was developed for grafting amines onto carboxylic acid functionalized carbon nanotubes for CO2 capture. The method was successful for grafting monomer ethylamine groups onto CNT and can be further developed to allow for polymeric amine …

Biotic Filtering In Endophytic Fungal Communities, Kevin Daniel Ricks Jun 2018

Biotic Filtering In Endophytic Fungal Communities, Kevin Daniel Ricks

Theses and Dissertations

Plants can be colonized by complex communities of endophytic fungi. This thesis presents two studies, both of which investigate biotic filtering in endophytic fungal communities. Chapter 1. Endophytic fungi can be acquired horizontally via propagules produced in the environment such as in plant litters of various species. Given that litters from different plant species harbor distinct endophytic fungal communities and that endophytic fungi may be dispersal-limited, the structure of the endophytic fungal community of a given plant may be determined by proximity to particular inoculum sources. Community assembly may also be affected by biotic filtering by the plant. Therefore, a …

Network Specializations, Symmetries, And Spectral Properties, Dallas C. Smith Jun 2018

Network Specializations, Symmetries, And Spectral Properties, Dallas C. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we introduce three techniques for network sciences. The first of these techniques is a series of new models for describing network growth. These models, called network specialization models, are built with the idea that networks grow by specializing the function of subnetworks. Using these models we create theoretical networks which exhibit well-known properties of real networks. We also demonstrate how the spectral properties are preserved as the models grow. The second technique we describe is a method for decomposing networks that contain automorphisms in a way that preserves the spectrum of the original graph. This method …

Application Of The Entropy Concept To Thermodynamics And Life Sciences: Evolution Parallels Thermodynamics, Cellulose Hydrolysis Thermodynamics, And Ordered And Disordered Vacancies Thermodynamics, Marko Popovic Jun 2018

Application Of The Entropy Concept To Thermodynamics And Life Sciences: Evolution Parallels Thermodynamics, Cellulose Hydrolysis Thermodynamics, And Ordered And Disordered Vacancies Thermodynamics, Marko Popovic

Theses and Dissertations

Entropy, first introduced in thermodynamics, is used in a wide range of fields. Chapter 1 discusses some important theoretical and practical aspects of entropy: what is entropy, is it subjective or objective, and how to properly apply it to living organisms. Chapter 2 presents applications of entropy to evolution. Chapter 3 shows how cellulosic biofuel production can be improved. Chapter 4 shows how lattice vacancies influence the thermodynamic properties of materials. To determine the nature of thermodynamic entropy, Chapters 1 and 2 describe the roots, the conceptual history of entropy, as well as its path of development and application. From …

Exploration Of The Gossypium Raimondii Genome Using Bionano Genomics Physical Mapping Technology, Christopher Jon Hanson Jun 2018

Exploration Of The Gossypium Raimondii Genome Using Bionano Genomics Physical Mapping Technology, Christopher Jon Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

Cotton is a crop with a large global economic impact as well as a large, complex genome. Most industrial cotton production is from two tetraploid species (Gossypium hirsutum L. and Gossypium barbadense L.) which contain two subgenomes, specifically the AT and DT subgenomes. The DT subgenome is nearly half the size of the AT subgenome in tetraploid cotton and is closely related to an extant D-genome Gossypium species, G. raimondii Ulbr. Characterization of the structural variants present in diploid D-genome should provide greater insight into the evolution of the DT subgenome in the tetraploid cotton. Bionano (BNG) optical mapping uses …

Characterizing The Spatial Variation Of Crop Water Productivity For Variable-Rate Irrigation Management, Jeffrey David Svedin Jun 2018

Characterizing The Spatial Variation Of Crop Water Productivity For Variable-Rate Irrigation Management, Jeffrey David Svedin

Theses and Dissertations

Irrigated agriculture is the primary consumer of limited worldwide freshwater resources. Drought, growing world populations, and environmental demands compete with irrigation for freshwater resources"”threatening sustainable global food, fuel, and fiber production. This escalating global crisis demands that agriculture produce more food using less water. Traditional irrigation management has used technology to apply uniform irrigation rates across landscapes"”ignoring natural environmental variation. This provides inherent inefficiencies of over- or under- irrigation within individual fields. Variable-rate irrigation (VRI) is modern technology that employs global positioning systems and geographic information systems to match irrigation to spatially variable crop water demands within a field. Although …

Evaluation Of Pigments From A Purple Variety Of Atriplex Hortensis L. For Use In Food Applications, Eva Graciela Vila Roa

Theses and Dissertations

Atriplex hortensis L., also known as orach, is a leafy vegetable from the Amaranthaceae family, which has historically been consumed as a potherb, like spinach. The brightly colored leaves are a source of high quality protein, but may also be of interest as a potential source of natural food pigments. An aqueous extraction was obtained from the freshly harvested leaves of the'Triple Purple' variety of A. hortensis. The extract was spray-dried into a powder, and individual pigments were analyzed using HPLC and LC-MS. The powder was also included as a color additive in a typical stabilizer/sweetener preparation and mixed into …

Development Of Affinity Monoliths In 3d Printed Microfluidic Devices For Extraction Of Preterm Birth Biomarkers, Ellen Kelsey Parker Jun 2018

Development Of Affinity Monoliths In 3d Printed Microfluidic Devices For Extraction Of Preterm Birth Biomarkers, Ellen Kelsey Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Preterm birth (PTB) is defined as birth before the 37th week of pregnancy and affects 15 million infants per year. Presently, there is no clinical test to determine PTB risk. A 3D printed microfluidic device is being developed as a clinical test for PTB risk via detection of a panel of biomarkers. A significant step is extraction of the PTB biomarkers from blood serum. In this work, I developed 3D printed microfluidic devices in which monoliths can be polymerized. Using the monolith as a solid support to attach antibody, I show that ferritin, one of the PTB biomarkers, can be …

Mercury And Dissolved Organic Matter Dynamics During Snowmelt In A Montane Watershed, Provo River, Utah., Brian Noel Packer Jun 2018

Mercury And Dissolved Organic Matter Dynamics During Snowmelt In A Montane Watershed, Provo River, Utah., Brian Noel Packer

Theses and Dissertations

Mercury (Hg) transport in streams is typically facilitated by dissolved organic matter (DOM), however, the dynamics of Hg and DOM during snowmelt in montane watersheds are poorly understood. Hg transport during snowmelt is widely recognized as a significant source of Hg to downstream lakes and reservoirs, such as Jordanelle Reservoir where fish consumption advisories are in effect due to elevated Hg concentrations in certain species of fish. For this study, total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and DOM samples were collected at three sites in the upper Provo River, northern Utah, during the 2016 and 2017 water years. To evaluate Hg …

Diversity In Tiller Suppression Of Domesticated Cereals: Morphologicalvariance Observed In Maize, Sorghum, And Setaria, Muriel Tahiameiani Longstaff Jun 2018

Diversity In Tiller Suppression Of Domesticated Cereals: Morphologicalvariance Observed In Maize, Sorghum, And Setaria, Muriel Tahiameiani Longstaff

Theses and Dissertations

Tillers are vegetative branches found in grasses, which develop in early stages of plant life. Located at the base of the central stalk, tillers have agronomical importance by increasing seed production with fewer tillers, or providing alternative forms of biofuel with more tillers. As grains have typically decreased tiller number while undergoing domestication, we explored wild and domesticated strains of varying grains by doing a morphological analysis on tiller development. This thesis shows how the decrease of tillers through in domestication cereals shows diversity not only across maize, Sorghum, and Setaria, but also between lines of maize and Setaria species. …

Genomics And Transcriptomics Of Antarctic Nematodes Reveal Drivers Of Life History Evolution And Genome Evolution, Xia Xue Jun 2018

Genomics And Transcriptomics Of Antarctic Nematodes Reveal Drivers Of Life History Evolution And Genome Evolution, Xia Xue

Theses and Dissertations

Elemental stoichiometry defines a critical understanding of the relationship between nutrient availability and usage throughout different levels of the biological community. We found there is a link between available phosphorus (P), cellular phosphorus, and nematode development as postulated by the growth rate hypothesis (GRH). I predicted that in a P-poor environment, cellular RNA concentrations would be lower than they are in P-rich environment, and thus the 18s rRNA expression level will have reduced. To most efficiently regulate the uptake of limited P, I predicted that nematodes in P-poor environments would decrease the number of copies of the 18s rRNA gene …

Plant Functional Groups And Success In A Changing Environment: Modeling Physiological Niches Of Colorado Plateau Plants, Anne Thomas May 2018

Plant Functional Groups And Success In A Changing Environment: Modeling Physiological Niches Of Colorado Plateau Plants, Anne Thomas

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Quantifying the environmental and physiological niches of plant species is crucial to predicting their sensitivity to global change, and aggregating plant species by functional type is fundamental both to ecological theory and to the practicality of large-scale efforts to predict the consequences of global change. However, traditional functional types are not always predictive of individual species’ responses to change. Here, an inverse species distribution modeling approach is used to identify functionally similar species based on physiological niche in order to better anticipate the consequences of climate change on the Colorado Plateau, USA. The Colorado Plateau is a semiarid region particularly …

Genomewide Evaluation Of Cis-Elements And Cognate Transcription Factors In Nicotiana Attenuata Predicts 27 Unique Transcription Factor-Binding Site Pairs, Ashton Omdahl May 2018

Genomewide Evaluation Of Cis-Elements And Cognate Transcription Factors In Nicotiana Attenuata Predicts 27 Unique Transcription Factor-Binding Site Pairs, Ashton Omdahl

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Nicotiana attenuata has been widely studied for its ecological plant-herbivore relationships and response to environmental stress. The jasmonate signaling pathway regulated by jasmonate ZIM-domiain (JAZ) repressor proteins that modulate defense response levels has been of particular focus in this research. While our understanding of the genes associated with defense response and their regulation continues to expand, the transcriptional regulation of these genes is largely uncharacterized. In an effort to provide insight into these relationships, we performed genomewide analysis of transcript level data in order to predict transcription factors (TFs), their respective binding sites (TFBS), and the genes they regulate. We …

Rab10: The Future Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Keni Reid, Dr. John Kauwe May 2018

Rab10: The Future Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Keni Reid, Dr. John Kauwe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder caused by an irreversible degeneration of nerve cells. It is developed in response to a growth of proteins, tau tangles or amyloid plaques, which disrupt communication between neurons in the brain. Because the nerve cells no longer function, they die. It is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s disease and about one to four family members act as caregivers for each individual with Alzheimer’s disease. Many lives are affected by Alzheimer’s which has driven further and extensive research for solutions. However, despite much effort, the genetics of Alzheimer’s remains …

Trf1 Mutations As A Mechanism For Telomere Length Maintenance In Cancer, Collin Sanderson, Jonathan Alder May 2018

Trf1 Mutations As A Mechanism For Telomere Length Maintenance In Cancer, Collin Sanderson, Jonathan Alder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences found on the ends of chromosomes that serve to protect the genes contained within each chromosome. As a cell replicates, its telomeres shorten, eventually triggering cellular senescence or death. This serves as a tumor suppressive mechanism by limiting the proliferation of cells. All cancers must overcome this growth limitation by acquiring mutations that permit telomere elongation. Most cancers achieve this by acquiring activating-mutations in an enzyme known as telomerase. Some cancers do not express telomerase, and maintain their telomeres by other means including a mechanism called “alternative lengthening of telomeres” (ALT). However, there exists a …

Exploring Ideocentrism: Ideology-Conflict And Out-Group Discrimination, Ryan Hemsley, Dr. Robert Ridge May 2018

Exploring Ideocentrism: Ideology-Conflict And Out-Group Discrimination, Ryan Hemsley, Dr. Robert Ridge

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Conflict has long been a topic of interest in the social sciences. There is considerable research that has examined conflict through bias, prejudice, out-group discrimination, and in-group preferential treatment. (see Burne et al, 1975; Hewstone et al, 2002; Kilduff et al 2016) However, the literature focuses disproportionately on conflict between cultural or biological groups. Relatively little research focuses on ideological groups. Such a balance may be counterproductive, as there is evidence that ideological conflict may be superordinate to racial conflict. Chambers et al. (2013) found that prejudice towards an ideological out-group was greater than prejudice towards a racial out-group. The …

Parental And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Craig H. Hart May 2018

Parental And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Where do children get their basic tendencies to act aggressively? One possibility is that it varies by the type of parenting received, particularly for young children, who tend to spend more time with their parents than do older children and adolescents. This chapter considers the expanse of research focusing on parenting as it corresponds with relationally aggressive tendencies in children, adolescents, or emerging adults (including similar constructs labeled as indirect or social aggression). Relational aggression subsumes indirect, covert, hostile behaviors where target children are not directly confronted (e.g., gossiping, talking behind one's back; see Chapter 2). It can also be …

Examining The Potential Role Of Gpr18 And Gpr119 In Learning And Memory, Brandon Anderson, James Kranewitter-Call, Dr. Jeffrey Edwards May 2018

Examining The Potential Role Of Gpr18 And Gpr119 In Learning And Memory, Brandon Anderson, James Kranewitter-Call, Dr. Jeffrey Edwards

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many mental disorders plague our society. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have greatly impacted many victims and their families. Despite the seriousness and pervasiveness of Alzheimer’s, there is still no effective treatment for it nor the accompanying dementia. GPR18 and GPR119 are G-protein coupled receptors (GPRs) and have been identified in the central nervous system, but their functional role is unknown. Many successful drugs target GPR proteins, so examining these GPRs’ function in the brain could lead to potential targets leading to innovative medical advances.

Memory is dependent on a molecular process called synaptic plasticity. In synaptic plasticity, the strength of …

Schwann cells play a major role in helping heal injured nerves. They help clear debris, produce neurotrophins, upregulate neurotrophin receptors, and form bands of Büngner to guide the healing nerve. But nerves do not always produce enough neurotrophins and neurotrophin receptors to repair themselves. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is an important neurotrophin for promoting nerve healing and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) has been shown to stimulate NGF receptors (NGFR). This study tested the administration of a single intraneural injection of LPC (1 mg/mL for single LPC injection and 10 mg/mL for multiple LPC injections) at day 0 and one (day 7), two …

Forward Genetic Screen To Identify Novel Genes Involved In Nhej Dna Repair, Taylor Brown, Dr. Jonathan Alder May 2018

Forward Genetic Screen To Identify Novel Genes Involved In Nhej Dna Repair, Taylor Brown, Dr. Jonathan Alder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

DNA contains all the information a cell needs to grow, divide, differentiate, and survive. It also dictates how and when a cell should die. DNA damage (particularly double strand breaks i.e. DSBs) may lead to cell death and/or disease. To circumvent DNA breaks, cells use various DNA repair mechanisms including non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). My ORCA research project focused on identifying novel genes involved in NHEJ. I did this by performing a forward genetic screen (FGS) that tested every known gene in the genome for involvement in NHEJ.

Classical anti-inflammatory cytokines are known to play a role in both cancer progression as well as cancer elimination. We evaluated the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and TGF-β in patients with colon adenocarcinoma and metastatic colon adenocarcinoma using immunohistochemical assays to determine the expression of the cytokines between various malignant tissues. We found tissues stained with TGF-β showed no significant upregulation within malignant tumors when compared with normal tissue controls. We observed high levels of TGF-β presence in most tissues similar to GAPDH expression. Within both colon adenocarcinoma and metastatic carcinomas there was a significant variability among patients in the expression of …

Faculty Publications

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) seropositivity may be associated with decreased memory in older adults. To further investigate the association between T. gondii seropositivity and memory in nondemented older adults, we obtained serum samples from 114 non-demented older adults evaluated by the Alzheimer’s Disease and Research Center at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri, USA. We determined T. gondii seropositivity and anti-T. gondii IgG antibody titer and examined associations with memory function while controlling for socioeconomic status, education level, age, and apolipoprotein E4 status. There were few associations between T. gondii seropositivity or anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies and memory, although there …

Mdma-Assisted Psychotherapy For Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Review Of The Literature, Erin Solomon May 2018

Mdma-Assisted Psychotherapy For Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Review Of The Literature, Erin Solomon

Student Works

A growing number of people suffer chronic, treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Buoso, Doblin, Farré, Alcázar, & Gómez-Jarabo, 2008; Mithoefer, Wagner, Mithoefer, Jerome, & Doblin, 2011; Oehen, Traber, Widmer, & Schnyder, 2013). The most popular treatments, including exposure therapy, may not be effective for some people (Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Mithoefer et al., 2011). Treatment dropout and suicidality are high among people for whom therapy is minimally effective (Amoroso, 2015; Amoroso & Workman, 2016; Mithoefer et al., 2011; Oehen et al., 2013). Researchers have begun to investigate 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy as a possible treatment for PTSD …

It's A Drag: Finding The Divine In Drag Performance, Richard Andrew Curtiss May 2018

It's A Drag: Finding The Divine In Drag Performance, Richard Andrew Curtiss

Theses and Dissertations

For over the thirty years, drag performance has been examined for its utility to subvert or reinforce traditional gender roles. Many of these examinations have focused on performances that emphasize subversion and separated drag into two categories: the progressive drag that subverts, and the regressive drag that reinforces. While this approach has provided a wealth of understanding about drag performance and gender roles, drag can be examined without separating its subverting/reinforcing aspects. If drag is seen as the consideration of a given gender performing the not given gender, then another consideration can be made to the subverting performing the reinforcing. …

Microbial And Co2 Responses To Water Stresses Show Decreased Productivity And Diversity Through Time, David Michael Robinson May 2018

Microbial And Co2 Responses To Water Stresses Show Decreased Productivity And Diversity Through Time, David Michael Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Some bacterial taxa when stimulated by water additions will break dormancy, grow, and become dominant members of the community and contribute significant pulses of CO2 associated with the rewetting event. These pulses of activity are associated with high levels of bacterial productivity in soils. (Aanderud et al. 2011) We examined the bacterial taxa that resuscitate and become metabolically active following two forms of water stress (soil drying-rewetting and freeze-thaw cycles) and we captured and measured the CO2 emanating from those soils. Specifically, We used target metagenomics, which uses a specific gene pool within bacteria that is associated with …

Design Of A Low-Cost Capillary Electrophoresis Laser-Induced Fluorescence System: Lessons Learned When Trying To Build The Lowest Possible Cost System, Steven James Perry May 2018

Design Of A Low-Cost Capillary Electrophoresis Laser-Induced Fluorescence System: Lessons Learned When Trying To Build The Lowest Possible Cost System, Steven James Perry

Theses and Dissertations

Capillary electrophoresis laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) is widely used to detect both the presence and concentration of fluorescently labeled biomolecules. In CE-LIF, a plug of sample fluid is electrophoretically driven down a microchannel using a high voltage applied between the opposite ends of the microchannel. Molecules of different sizes and charge states travel at different velocities down the channel. Laser light with a wavelength in the excitation band of the fluorophores is focused near the end of the channel. As each species of molecule passes through the laser spot, the fluorophores emit a fluorescence signal which is measured with an optical …

Current social science literature outside of anthropology has attributed Hmong difficulties adapting to Western health care to their traditional healing practices, claiming that successful integration only occurs as the younger generation discards traditional beliefs (Franzen-Castle & Smith 2013). Ethnographic research conducted in France and Thailand refutes these claims; Hmong of younger and older generations utilize both the state medical system and traditional healing, integrating these systems instead of treating them as ontologically distinct (and thus in competition with each other). Many researchers and medical personnel studying or working with Hmong populations have ignored models of ontological holism because of the …

Signal Structure For A Class Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Meilan Jin May 2018

Signal Structure For A Class Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Meilan Jin

Theses and Dissertations

The signal structure is a partial structure representation for dynamic systems. It characterizes the causal relationship between manifest variables and is depicted in a weighted graph, where the weights are dynamic operators. Earlier work has defined signal structure for linear time-invariant systems through dynamical structure function. This thesis focuses on the search for the signal structure of nonlinear systems and proves that the signal structure reduces to the linear definition when the systems are linear. Specifically, this work: (1) Defines the complete computational structure for nonlinear systems. (2) Provides a process to find the complete computational structure given a state …

Pauline Oliveros And The Quest For Musical Utopia, Hannah Christina Mclaughlin May 2018

Pauline Oliveros And The Quest For Musical Utopia, Hannah Christina Mclaughlin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses music's role in utopian community-building by using a case study of a specific composer, Pauline Oliveros, who believed her work could provide a positive "pathway to the future" resembling other utopian visions. The questions of utopian intent, potential, and method are explored through an analysis of Oliveros's untraditional scores, as well as an exploration of Oliveros's writings and secondary accounts from members of the Deep Listening community. This document explores Oliveros's utopian beliefs and practices and outlines important aspects of her utopian vision as they relate to three major utopian models: the traditional "end-state" model, the anarchical …

The Relationship Between Measures Of Annual Livestock Disturbance In Western Riparian Areas And Stream Conditions Important To Trout, Salmon, And Char, Lindsey M. Goss, Brett B. Roper Apr 2018

The Relationship Between Measures Of Annual Livestock Disturbance In Western Riparian Areas And Stream Conditions Important To Trout, Salmon, And Char, Lindsey M. Goss, Brett B. Roper

Western North American Naturalist

Managing livestock disturbance in riparian zones in a manner that provides economic returns to ranchers while protecting streams is an important aspect of rangeland management on public lands in the western United States. Attempts to balance economic and ecologic outcomes have been made more difficult due to the presence of several salmonid species that are protected under the Endangered Species Act. One approach to proper management of livestock use near streams has been to define the allowable limits of disturbance using 2 metrics, streambank alteration and stubble height. We evaluated 153 stream reaches within the Interior Columbia Basin to determine …
