Constancy Amid Change, Michael Goodman, Daniel Frost Jan 2022

Constancy Amid Change, Michael Goodman, Daniel Frost

BYU Studies

Few issues are more sensitive and in need of serious study than gender and sexuality. Taylor Petrey’s book, Tabernacles of Clay: Sexuality and Sexual Difference in Modern Mormonism, contributes much to that study. The book provides a nuanced view of Church leaders’ attempts to understand and teach the nature of gender and sexuality. Petrey shows that Latter-day Saint discourse on these issues has changed substantially, especially since World War II. Petrey has gathered a trove of material for scholars and others who seek to better understand how culture, tradition, and theology have shaped teachings about gender and sexuality. Though …

Religion And Sexual Orientation As Predictors Of Utah Youth Suicidality, W. Justin Dyer, Michael A. Goodman, David S. Wood

BYU Studies

Adolescent suicide rates have increased substantially over the last two decades; suicide has become the second leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults since 2017. Some areas in the U.S. have experienced particularly large rises in suicide. For example, according to the Utah Department of Health, there was a 136.2 percent increase in suicides among Utah youth age 10–17 from 2011 to 2015, compared to an increase of 24 percent nationally.

“The Wind And The Fire To Be My Chariot”: The Anachronism That Wasn’T, John Gee Jan 2022

“The Wind And The Fire To Be My Chariot”: The Anachronism That Wasn’T, John Gee

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Book of Abraham, God tells Abraham in Haran, “I cause the wind and the fire to be my chariot” (Abraham 2:7). While this initially might appear to be an anachronism, as the chariot is normally thought to have been introduced later, archaeological finds of chariots at the site of Harran predate Abraham by hundreds of years.

Measuring Social Connectedness During Shared Leisure Activities Using Oxytocin: A Comparison Of Sampling Urine Versus Saliva, Karen K. Melton, Camilla Hodge, Madeline L. Haron, Maria Boccia Jan 2022

Measuring Social Connectedness During Shared Leisure Activities Using Oxytocin: A Comparison Of Sampling Urine Versus Saliva, Karen K. Melton, Camilla Hodge, Madeline L. Haron, Maria Boccia

Faculty Publications

Leisure experiences are often associated with social connectedness. One measure of social connection underutilized in leisure studies is the neurohormone oxytocin. This methodological note considers issues researchers need to address when incorporating oxytocin in their study design. Noninvasive sources for sampling oxytocin include saliva and urine; however, the decision about which method to employ is not well documented. This study provides the first methodological note on collecting oxytocin in leisure studies and provides a comparison of urine vs. saliva measures for oxytocin in the context of leisure activities. Our findings indicate that urine samples are more sensitive to oxytocin change …

A Framework For Phronetic Ldt Theory, Jason K. Mcdonald Jan 2022

A Framework For Phronetic Ldt Theory, Jason K. Mcdonald

Faculty Publications

My purpose in this chapter is to offer a reimagined view of theory in the field of learning design and technology (LDT). Instead of viewing theory as an external storehouse of knowledge, or a rule-like system for professionals to apply, in this framework theory is viewed as an orienting aid that supports practitioners as they refine their personal capacities for perception, discrimination, and judgment. Theory plays this orienting role as it offers insights into LDT-relevant practical knowledge, productive heuristics, points professionals towards opportunities to act, or identifies significant patterns and forms of excellence to which they can pay attention as …

Hinterlands To Cities: The Archaeology Of Northwest Mexico And Its Vecinos, Matthew C. Pailes, Michael T. Searcy

Faculty Publications

Tis approachable book is a comprehensive synthesis of Northwest Mexico from the US border to the Mesoamerican frontier. Filling a vital gap in the regional literature, it serves as an essential reference not only for those interested in the specific history of this area of Mexico but western North America writ large. A period-by-period review of approximately14,000 years reveals the dynamic connections that knitted together societies inhabiting the Sea of Cortez coast, the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. Networks of interaction spanned these diverse ecological, topographical, and cultural terrains in the millennia following the demise of …

Ecology Of Family Experiences: Contextualizing Family Leisure For Human Development & Family Relations, Karen K. Melton, Camilla Hodge, Mat D. Duerden Jan 2022

Ecology Of Family Experiences: Contextualizing Family Leisure For Human Development & Family Relations, Karen K. Melton, Camilla Hodge, Mat D. Duerden

Faculty Publications

All family leisure is not equal. Yet, little is known about the mechanisms linking different types of family leisure to different human development and family relations outcomes. The Ecology of Family Experiences (EFE) framework provides a sensitizing lens for the study of the conditions under which family leisure is beneficial to individuals and families. Specifically, the framework suggests three domains—Family, Activity, and Time—iteratively interact to generate different levels of individual and family outcomes (i.e., responses, meaning, and development). The EFE necessitates research built on ecologically valid study designs that incorporate innovative measurement approaches. Scholars using such approaches can increase the …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Heat Therapy And Exercise Training On Vascular Function During Passive And Active Exercise, Taysom Erica Wallace Dec 2021

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Heat Therapy And Exercise Training On Vascular Function During Passive And Active Exercise, Taysom Erica Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Recent evidence suggests that heat, a major byproduct of exercise, may be the mediator for many vascular adaptations that come from exercise. Thus, heat therapy that increases muscle temperature in a comparable way to exercise may be an advantageous alternative for enhancing cardiovascular health in individuals where treatment with exercise is either not possible or undesired. PURPOSE: Compare the effects of exercise and heat training on resistance artery function at rest and during exercise. METHODS: Thirty-five (18 female) healthy, untrained subjects completed a 6-week training program utilizing either high intensity knee extension (KE) exercise (40 min), localized heat therapy (pulsed …

Bayesian, Frequentist, And Information Geometry Approaches To Parametric Uncertainty Quantification Of Classical Empirical Interatomic Potentials, Yonatan Kurniawan Dec 2021

Bayesian, Frequentist, And Information Geometry Approaches To Parametric Uncertainty Quantification Of Classical Empirical Interatomic Potentials, Yonatan Kurniawan

Theses and Dissertations

Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is an increasingly important part of materials modeling. In this paper, we consider the problem of quantifying parametric uncertainty in classical empirical interatomic potentials (IPs). Previous work based on local sensitivity analysis using the Fisher Information has shown that IPs are sloppy, i.e., are insensitive to coordinated changes of many parameter combinations. We confirm these results and further explore the non-local statistics in the context of sloppy model analysis using both Bayesian (MCMC) and Frequentist (profile likelihood) methods. We interface these tools with the Knowledgebase of Interatomic Models (OpenKIM) and study three models based on the Lennard-Jones, …

Identifying And Knocking Out Non-Visual Opsins In The Optic Tectum Of Zebrafish Larvae, Sarah Jarrett Dec 2021

Identifying And Knocking Out Non-Visual Opsins In The Optic Tectum Of Zebrafish Larvae, Sarah Jarrett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Deep brain photoreceptors (DBPs) are non-visual photoreceptors found in the brains of non-mammalian vertebrates like zebrafish. While using optogenetic techniques in our lab to photo-activate the ear (by expressing the light-gated channel: channelrhodopsin) in efforts of identifying optic tectum (OT) neurons that respond to and integrate auditory and visual stimuli, we found that violet light was able to elicit OT neuronal activity. OT activity was also detected in cases when visual and auditory stimulation was not possible due to removal of the eyes and absence of the exogenously expressed channelrhodopsin, respectively. Analyzing OT single-cell sequencing data of 7day post fertilization …

Advancing Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Systems For On-Demand Next-Generation Protein Therapeutics And Clinical Diagnostics, Emily Ann Long Zhao Dec 2021

Advancing Cell-Free Protein Synthesis Systems For On-Demand Next-Generation Protein Therapeutics And Clinical Diagnostics, Emily Ann Long Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Recombinant proteins have many medical and industrial applications, but their use is complicated by commercial production and stability constraints. These issues are particularly challenging for recombinant proteins used in pharmaceutical therapeutics and clinical diagnostics. Expensive production and distribution limit the accessibility of therapeutics and diagnostics especially in the developing world. Additionally, clinical use of recombinant proteins face further challenges within biological systems including biological degradation and immunogenicity. To increase the accessibility of recombinant proteins, the cost and inefficiencies of protein manufacturing and distribution need to be significantly reduced. A powerful tool to aid in this endeavor is cell-free protein synthesis …

This research explores Isothermal Titration Calorimetry as a method for measuring beta-galactosidase activity directly and continuously in milk, sweet whey, sweet whey permeate, acid whey, and acid whey permeate. Beta-galactosidase in various concentrations was injected into each of the liquid dairy products spiked with lactose to verify if the heat rate from the enzymatic reaction could be observed. In addition, a consistent concentration of beta-galactosidase was injected into various concentrations of lactose in the products, to observe the heat rates from the enzymatic reaction. There was exothermic activity that never returned to baseline demonstrated in milk, sweet whey, and sweet …

Effects Of Catharanthine On Dopamine Release In The Nucleus Accumbens And Ethanol Consumption, Emily Baldwin Dec 2021

Effects Of Catharanthine On Dopamine Release In The Nucleus Accumbens And Ethanol Consumption, Emily Baldwin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis discusses the history of catharanthine and related compounds, and their potential anti-addictive properties. Current research is exploring possible mechanisms of these properties. Past studies have found catharanthine has effects on neurons that project to the mesocorticolimbic system, an area implicated in addiction. We have seen that catharanthine decreases evoked dopamine (DA) release but increases basal DA release. This is the first study to investigate catharanthine’s effect on DA transmission in vivo. Using microdialysis, we determined the effect of catharanthine on DA in the nucleus accumbens of the striatum. This study determines the effect of different doses of …

Female Puma (Puma Concolor) Highway Crossings In The Yucatan Peninsula, Carlos A. López González, Fernanda Cruz Torres, Mircea G. Hidalgo Mihart

Western North American Naturalist

Human infrastructure, particularly highway infrastructure, has proven to be a hazard for the resilience of large felid populations throughout the world. The Yucatan Peninsula is no exception and is presently confronted with the establishment of the “Tren Maya,” a continental railway that will reshape the road network of the peninsula. We describe 12 successful crossings of a 4-lane highway on the peninsula by a female puma (Puma concolor) fitted with a GPS radio-transmitter. The median time between sequential locations was 24 h (range 8–56 h), and the average number of days between crossings was 4.33 (SD = 2.50). …

Restricted Microbial Presence, Activity, And Community Structuring Within Dry Valley Soils Of Antarctica, Scott Fillerup George Dec 2021

Restricted Microbial Presence, Activity, And Community Structuring Within Dry Valley Soils Of Antarctica, Scott Fillerup George

Theses and Dissertations

The McMurdo Dry Valley region is the largest ice-free area of Antarctica. Harsh abiotic conditions of the polar desert ecosystem, including extreme cold, aridity, and limited nutrient availability select for unique taxa. The comparatively simple terrestrial ecosystem is well-suited for investigating edaphic influences on microbial presence, activity, and community structuring. The Dry Valleys are viewed as a useful analog for Mars astrobiology investigations. However, most biotic investigations have been focused on lower elevations, where an understanding of edaphic effects on microbial communities within its generally more favorable conditions has emerged. Transiently wetted Dry Valley water tracks may be analogous to …

Western North American Naturalist

The Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) migrates approximately 4000 km through the central Great Plains biannually, between their breeding and wintering grounds. Whooping Cranes depend on stopover sites to provide secure resting locations and the caloric resources necessary to complete their migration, such as the USFWS-designated critical habitat area in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska. This area includes braided river habitat characterized by low-elevation and submerged sandbars, which provide important roosting and foraging opportunities for migrating Whooping Cranes. We used long-range photography, videography, and behavioral scan sampling to document forage items consumed …

Mixture Design Response Surface Methodology Analysis Of Seven Natural Bioactive Compounds To Treat Prostate Cancer, Ian Geddes Berlin

Theses and Dissertations

Natural bioactive compounds have drawn the interest of many researchers worldwide in their effort to find novel treatments, including prostate cancer (PC) treatment which is estimated to be 13.1% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. in 2021. Many of these bioactive compounds have been identified from treatments in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), that often have multiple bioactive compounds present. However, in vitro studies frequently focus on the compounds in isolation, or in simple combinations of two compounds. We used mixture design response surface methodology (MDRSM) to assess changes in PC cell viability after 48 hours of treatment to …

Nesting Biology And Offspring Development Of The Cavity-Nesting Solitary Wasp Isodontia Elegans (F. Smith) From Trap-Nests In Oregon, Ronald C. Spendal, Kevin M. O'Neill, Casey M. Delphia

Western North American Naturalist

We studied the nesting biology and developmental schedules of the cavity-nesting solitary wasp Isodontia elegans in Oregon, USA. Trap-nests contained 1–15 brood cells each, separated by partitions, which adult females made with grass fragments. Before leaving nests to hunt, females made loose, temporary closures of longer fragments of dried grass and, upon returning, briefly deposited prey just inside the nest entrance before transferring them to a cell. Cells were provisioned with katydids (Meconema thalassinum, an invasive species in North America) and tree crickets (Oecanthus fultoni), the latter predominating as summers progressed. The inner cells of nests, …

Characterization Of Bacteriophage Targeting Bacillus Licheniformis In Milk Processes And Thermal Stability Of Bacteriophage During Htst Pasteurization, Jeremy Robert Arbon

Theses and Dissertations

An array of Bacillus licheniformis strains were isolated from a commercial powdered milk process. Bacteriophages exhibiting activity against B. licheniformis were isolated from cattle manure and effluent samples destined for a lagoon at a dairy farm. After sequencing, 8 of the 10 phages were found to be novel and genetically differentiated. Transmission electron scanning microscopy (TSEM) was performed. All bacteriophages were of the family Herelleviridae with contractile tail sheaths ranging from 80µm to 150µm and, surprisingly, survived a common fluid milk processing treatment used to inactivate vegetative cells. The survival of the phage after high temperature short time pasteurization of …

Western North American Naturalist

We compared movement and space use patterns of foraging adult and juvenile Colorado checkered whiptails (Aspidoscelis neotesselatus) in pinyon pine–juniper woodland. Through focal observations, we characterized (1) movement paths as a series of step lengths and turn angles at 30-s intervals, and (2) habitat use reflected by the proportion of time spent in different vegetation types and in the open. Adults and juveniles differed in both movement and habitat use. Adults spent more time in the open and in association with mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus), while juveniles were more frequently found in association with dead wood, …

Atypical Sensory Processing And Semantic Language In Autistic Children, Charlene L. Cooper Dec 2021

Atypical Sensory Processing And Semantic Language In Autistic Children, Charlene L. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Autistic children demonstrate a constellation of traits with varying degrees of severity in areas including language differences, restrictive and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing differences. However, the relationship between sensory processing and these other behaviors are not well understood especially their neurobiological underpinnings. Therefore, this research examined behavioral measures of semantic language, sensory traits, and associated brain networks in 20 autistic children (ages 6-11) and 22 typically developing (TD) age matched peers. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed a strong correlation between sensory traits and general composite and semantic language in both groups of participants. Sensory seeking traits were most significantly correlated …

Modeling A Human Family Network, Rebecca Jo Flores Dec 2021

Modeling A Human Family Network, Rebecca Jo Flores

Theses and Dissertations

We propose a model that generates a family network based on real-world family network data. We use this model to study the extent to which distances to union and the number of children characterize family networks. To determine how accurate our model is we use persistent homology to identify and compare the structure of our modeled family networks to real-world family networks. To accomplish this, we introduce the notion of a network's persistence curve, which encodes the network's set of persistence intervals. Using the bottleneck distance allows us to measure the difference in the homological structure between any pair of …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Carbohydrates Via Surface Immobilized Viologen, Dallin D.V. Scott Dec 2021

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Carbohydrates Via Surface Immobilized Viologen, Dallin D.V. Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Earths most abundant biomolecules, carbohydrates, offer tremendous potential forelectricity production. Carbohydrate fuel cells are electrical fuel cells that can harvest the stored electrons in carbohydrates and offer a cheap and efficient method that could help solve growing energy demands, while providing a renewable green energy source. Viologen-mediated carbohydrate fuel cells have demonstrated the ability to accelerate carbohydrate oxidation while decreasing partial or incomplete oxidation products reducing the electricity production. Subsequent studies suggested polymeric viologen compounds could improve the efficiency by increasing the local concentration of viologen. This thesis presents the utility of surface-immobilized viologen mediators for the oxidation of simple …

Galectin-1: Development Of A Novel Protein Therapy For Lgmd2b, Mary Lorena Vallecillo Munguia

Theses and Dissertations

Muscular dystrophies are a heterogeneous group of genetic diseases that involve mutations in genes leading to progressive muscular weakness. Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2B (LGMD2B) is a subset of muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the DYSF gene, which encodes for dysferlin protein and has an incidence of 1/100,000-1/200,000 people, or 1/300 people of Libyan Jewish descent. Since there is no effective treatment that can cure or reverse effects of LGMD2B once diagnosed, our goal is to investigate and develop a protein therapy that mitigates effects of this disease in patients. Galectin-1 (Gal-1) is a small, soluble 14.5 kDa protein with …
