On Verifying Wordprint Studies: Book Of Mormon Authorship, John L. Hilton
BYU Studies
John L. Hilton describes the young science of wordprinting, which is used to prove or disprove authorship, presenting its history, purposes, and development. Hilton examines wordprint studies of translations. They show that it is statistically indefensible to propose a single author of the manuscript of the Book of Mormon.
Lehi And El Niño: A Method Of Migration, David L. Clark
Lehi And El Niño: A Method Of Migration, David L. Clark
BYU Studies
David L. Clark combines what historians know about the migration of Lehi and his family to the Promised Land (from Arabia to the New World) with historical climate and weather patterns and currents in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. He discusses why Lehi, and later Nephi, may have chosen a certain path and timing to get to the Promised Land.
Naturalistic Assumptions And The Book Of Mormon, Gary F. Novak
Naturalistic Assumptions And The Book Of Mormon, Gary F. Novak
BYU Studies
Gary F. Novak tells of Leonard J. Arrington's claims in his study of the naturalistic terms of the Book of Mormon. This article subjects some of the ideas presents in that article to scrutiny. Novak does lilt his discussion to one aspect of Mormon history; the so-called environmental discussion of the Book of Mormon.
"Never Have I Showed Myself Unto Man": A Suggestion For Understanding Ether 3:15a, Kent P. Jackson
"Never Have I Showed Myself Unto Man": A Suggestion For Understanding Ether 3:15a, Kent P. Jackson
BYU Studies
In the Book of Mormon, the brother of Jared has a vision of Jesus Christ. Christ states, "Never have I showed myself unto man whom I have created" (Ether 3:15). This statement is remarkable because Adam, Eve, Enoch, and Noah had conversed with Deity. Jackson presents some interpretations of the statement and then presents his own: that before this time, Jesus had presented himself in the authority of God the Father, and in the case of his appearance to the brother of Jared he presented himself as Christ, the Father and the Son.
Explicating The Mystery Of The Rejected Foundation Stone: The Allegory Of The Olive Tree, Paul Y. Hoskisson
Explicating The Mystery Of The Rejected Foundation Stone: The Allegory Of The Olive Tree, Paul Y. Hoskisson
BYU Studies
Paul Y. Hosikisson, discusses the allegory of the olive tree preached by Jacob in the Book of Mormon. Jacob used the allegory to teach the Nephites that the Jews would reject Christ but later return and build on Christ as their sure foundation. Hoskisson ascribes each of the seven periods in the allegory to major eras in the history of the house of Israel.
The Exodus Pattern In The Book Of Mormon, S. Kent Brown
The Exodus Pattern In The Book Of Mormon, S. Kent Brown
BYU Studies
S. Kent Brown compares the exodus events that occur in the Book of Mormon to the exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt. He compares the Nephite bondage to the exodus as well, suggesting that the Book of Mormon figure Alma the Elder is a type of Moses. He links the exodus typologically to the effects of Jesus' atonement. Finally, he cites the exodus a proof of the power of God and his ability to fulfill his promises.

Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson
Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Review of Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book and the Cult (1989), by Peter Bartley. Bartley attacks Mormonism and its sacred book, the Book of Mormon, which is not surprising when one notes the anti-Mormon sources he cosulted. Rigorous and well-grounded arguments are lacking, and sweepingly dogmatic assertions dominate. He faults the Book of Mormon on various claims as well as on stylistic grounds--he asserts that it appears to be written entirely by one person. This publication represents just one more anti-Mormon book.

Editor's Introduction: By What Measure Shall We Mete?, Daniel C. Peterson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Peterson discusses the growth of the Mormon religion and scholarly indifference toward that growth. He discusses the power of presuppositions and the variance of opinions, using the Qur'an as a case study. The orignality, literary merit, and intrinsic merit of the Book of Mormon increase our appreciation for that book.

Annual Farms Lecture: The Book Of Mormon, Designed For Our Day, Richard Dilworth Rust
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Rust, in the third annual FARMS Book of Mormon lecture delivered on 27 February 1990, examin3ed literary aspects of the book that develop the primary purposes set out on the title page. He discussed the elements characteristic of an epic that will allow modern-day Lamanites to trust in the Lord's deliverance and detailed literary (especially poetic) presentations of the covenants in the Book of Mormon. Literary elements combine with the influence of the Spirit to testify of the purposes of the Book of Mormon.

Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell
Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell
Quidditas
Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron is one of the many works that have fallen prey to the contemporary fascination with indeterminacy and the poetics of failure. Increasingly, critics are writing of the "ambiguity" of the novella collection and the lack of narrative resolve that seems to characterize both the novellas and the discussions by the "devisants" that surround the novellas. My purpose in this essay is to contest this view. I intend to show that from a historical perspective, when the Heptaméron is seen in the light of the pervasive rhetorical concerns of late Renaissance writers, the prevailing critical view is …
