Endangered And Threatened Fishes Of The West, James E. Deacon
Endangered And Threatened Fishes Of The West, James E. Deacon
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
The endangered and threatened fish fauna of the United States exhibits problems resulting primarily from habitat modification by man. The evolutionary history of the fauna has left it especially sensitive to biotic interactions. In addition, many forms are of such restricted distribution that the entire taxon can be destroyed by very minor perturbations. The effects of habitat modification on woundfin and roundtail chub in the Virgin River of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada are discussed. Parasitism by Lernea on White River springfish is shown to coincide with population decline in some, but not all, cases. Population declines of Pahrump killifish are …
Endangered Species: Costs And Benefits, Edwin P. Pister
Endangered Species: Costs And Benefits, Edwin P. Pister
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Biologists are often placed in the difficult position of defending a threatened habitat or animal with vague reasoning and faulty logic, simply because they have no better rationale at their immediate disposal. This places them at a distinct disadvantage and literally at the mercy of resource exploiters and their easily assignable dollar values. Although the initial dollar cost of delaying precluding "developing" may be significant, the long-term benefits of saving the biological entities which might otherwise be destroyed are likewise great and are measurable in concrete terms which society is only now beginning to appreciate. Case histories are presented, a …

“…Of Countries And Of Kingdoms”, Jeffrey R. Holland
“…Of Countries And Of Kingdoms”, Jeffrey R. Holland
BYU Studies
Jeffrey R. Holland, at that time the commissioner of education for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave a luncheon address in connection with a Brigham Young University comparative religion symposium. The symposium was entitled “Deity, Ways of Worship, and Death” and was sponsored by the BYU Religious Studies Center in 1977. In this address, Holland emphasizes that Mormons should embrace light and truth no matter where it may come from. One example he focuses on is the Eastern tradition of meditation; there are numerous scriptural examples of prophets pondering and meditating before they received important revelations. He …

An Analysis Of The Problems In Obtaining And Maintaining Released Time For Seminary In The Central Idaho Seminary District, Arthur A. Bailey
An Analysis Of The Problems In Obtaining And Maintaining Released Time For Seminary In The Central Idaho Seminary District, Arthur A. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the problems encountered by Latter-day Saints in establishing released time privileges for the Central Idaho Seminary District. A careful examination of minutes of state and local school boards, of L.D.S. Church Boards of Education, and of local seminary histories plus personal interviews determined which problems had been resolved.
The major problems were 1) whether released time was constitutional; 2) whether high school credit should be given for religious instruction; 3) getting good ethical men to serve on school boards; 4) creating good working relationships between public school and the seminary; and 5) overcoming the feeling that the …

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell
Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
Since the first man perceived and used his environment, there has existed a reciprocal man-land relationship. The physical environment provides opportunities for man's use and also sets limitations. Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. It is these factors that determine what a man will see as possibilities in land use, and how he will use his environment.
In the case of the relic Mormon Culture Region, Mormon religious beliefs highly influenced perception of the environment. Most visual geographical features of the landscape in the …

This thesis is a study of the development, use and value of a method of teaching the scriptures called Seminary Bowl from its beginning in 1964-65 to the present day.
The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the full-time teachers of the seminary program are using Seminary Bowl and to have teachers and students evaluate this method of teaching the scriptures.

Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis
Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the functions: ordinances, meetings, programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the development of the physical plant. Inversely, the effect of Church house forms on the development of Church function was investigated. It was found that:
1. In Latter-day Saint Church development, form has always followed function.
2. Function has influenced form to a great extent. Priesthood, meeting, or other program needs are a prime factor in changing the form and design of Church buildings.
3. Form has influenced function only insofar as the physical …
Father's Use Of Time As Related To Father-Son Identification For A Selected Middle Class Mormon Sample, Charles F. Myler
Father's Use Of Time As Related To Father-Son Identification For A Selected Middle Class Mormon Sample, Charles F. Myler
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate the possible relationship between the father's use of time and the identification between the father and the son. Several studies in the past have indicated that not only is identification important to the personality development of the son, but that how the father uses his time also affects the identification between the father and the son.

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury
Theses and Dissertations
It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …

A Study Of Drop-Outs From Twelve Seminaries In Utah Conducted During 1960-61, Roy Fearnley Hatch
Theses and Dissertations
Public educators are using drop-out studies as a means of improving the curriculum and increasing the holding power of the schools. The public educators are attempting to prepare man for life and the religious educators are attempting to prepare man for eternity. There have been many studies concerning the public school drop-outs, but this is the first one concerning seminary drop-outs.
The purpose of this study has been to determine why some students drop-out of seminary before graduation. After learning the reasons for the students dropping out, it is important that changes be made to increase the enrollment and holding …
