A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles Jan 1962

A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles

Theses and Dissertations

During the Nineteenth Century, a reform agitation known as the prohibition movement began to gather momentum in the United States. Led chiefly by the Women's Christian Temperance Union and pushed also by the Prohibition Party, this movement grew only slowly until a general spirit of reform began to sweep the country at the end of the century. With the W.C.T.U. and the American Anti-Saloon League leading the fight during the Progressive Era, the tide of public opinion finally took form in the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, an amendment which forbade "the manufacture, sale or transportation …

A Study Of The Influence Of Seminary Teachers On Seminary Enrollment In The Twenty-Seven One-Teacher Seminaries Of The State Of Utah, Hal Loren Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Teachers in general have a great deal of interest in the well-being of their students. This is especially true of the seminary teacher whose subject matter is designed to not only prepare his student for life, but for eternity. The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to determine the influence of the seminary teacher on seminary enrollment statistics as compared with other major influential groups in the twenty-seven one-teacher seminaries in the State of Utah, and (2) to consider the correlation of highly rated teachers to high enrollment percentages.

Some Political Concepts Of J. Reuben Clark, Jr, F. Melvin Hammond Jan 1962

Some Political Concepts Of J. Reuben Clark, Jr, F. Melvin Hammond

Theses and Dissertations

The political views of J. Reuben Clark, Jr. have been of interest to the membership of the Mormon Church since the year 1933, when Clark was appointed second counselor to Heber. J. Grant, then President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This interest was generated In part by the various political positions of importance which Clark held since 1906, and by the numerous politically-oriented speeches which he gave from time to time throughout the Church and the nation.

According to Clark, the nature of man's relationship to the state was determined by a pre-earth existence. Clark believed …

The Faith Of Their Fathers: A Study Of The Religious Influence In Child-Rearing, Phillip R. Kunz Jan 1962

The Faith Of Their Fathers: A Study Of The Religious Influence In Child-Rearing, Phillip R. Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

Although there have been several significant studies during recent years concerning methods of child-rearing, little has been done to ascertain what influence an ideology may have on child-rearing patterns, or whether there are unique patterns of child-rearing within a specific subculture.

Specifically, the purpose of this research is to answer the following questions: (1) What influence, if any, does the L.D.S. religious ideology have on child-rearing behavior, and (2) what are some of the patterns of child-rearing in the L.D.S. subculture.

An Historical Study Of The Koyle Relief Mine, 1894-1962, James R. Christianson Jan 1962

An Historical Study Of The Koyle Relief Mine, 1894-1962, James R. Christianson

Theses and Dissertations

The Koyle Relief Mine, located near Spanish Fork in Central Utah, has had a profound effect upon the life and property of thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Company officials claim that the number of stockholders, past and present, exceeds six thousand persons.

Despite the sixty-eight years of its totally unsuccessful operation, the mine continues to maintain a countless number of old believers and to attract a considerable array of new ones. Prompted by a type of religious fervor, these people continue to declare the mine divine and its founder, John H. Koyle, inspired. …

A History Of The Latter-Day Settlement Of Star Valley, Wyoming, Ray Mccord Hall Jan 1962

A History Of The Latter-Day Settlement Of Star Valley, Wyoming, Ray Mccord Hall

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saints were good colonizers, possibly because they were repeatedly forced by persecution to seek new homes in the wilderness. Having established themselves in Salt Lake Valley (1847), they began almost immediately to expand their domain. Their Prophet, Brigham Young, sent groups of Mormons to colonize the surrounding valleys, and within a few years there were many Mormon settlements beyond the bounds of Salt Lake Valley. Bear Lake Valley in southeastern Idaho and northern Utah was one of these early settlements.

Star Valley--thus named by Moses Thatcher, an Apostle in the Church who thought it was a "star among …

The War-Making Power: Congress Vs. The President, Van L. Perkins Jan 1962

The War-Making Power: Congress Vs. The President, Van L. Perkins

BYU Studies

Although constitutionally the Congress has the power to declare war, throughout U.S. history the President has usurped this power. Cases such as the Mexican War, the French Naval war, and the China Relief Insurrection before World War I are all instances when the President took the initiative in entering a war without an official declaration by Congress. In the case of both World Wars, presidential policies prior to the wars left little choice to Congress. The article examines the U.S.'s involvement in the Korean War and the Formosan Resolution. In the future, the President must be careful not to overstep …

The Visual Image Of Joseph Smith, William B. Mccarl Jan 1962

The Visual Image Of Joseph Smith, William B. Mccarl

Theses and Dissertations

For most of the period since his death in 1844, at the hands of a maniacal mob in Carthage, Illinois, there has been doubt about which portrait of Joseph Smith, first president and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, best represented his physical features. This work has attempted to accumulate as much information about his features as was available for the purpose of establishing the true image of the man. The discoveries made by this study are listed in the following discussion.

Joseph Smith And The Millenarian Time Table, Richard Lloyd Anderson Oct 1961

Joseph Smith And The Millenarian Time Table, Richard Lloyd Anderson

BYU Studies

Critics have used Joseph Smith's statements about the eminent return of the Messiah as evidence that he was a false prophet. Joseph's 1835 statement that "fifty-six years should wind up the scene" has fallen under considerable criticism. By examining the context of this statement, the author asserts that it was not a divinely revealed pronouncement but an opinion or an interpretation of a personal revelation the prophet received. Unlike other millenarian groups, the Latter-day Saints did not actively forecast the arrival of the Savior, nor did they passively wait for the glorious millennial day to arrive. Joseph Smith inspired the …

Religion And Economics In Mormon History, Leonard J. Arrington Oct 1961

Religion And Economics In Mormon History, Leonard J. Arrington

BYU Studies

One surprising aspect of Mormon doctrine is its emphasis on temporal prosperity as well as spiritual salvation. This was especially true in the early Church. Whether the economic bent of Mormon doctrine was due to current economic philosophies or direct revelation, the early history in the Church of gathering and persecution encouraged its further development. Mormon economic ideals fit under four headings: promotion of economic growth, desire for economic independence, striving for unity and cooperation, and equality of distribution. These ideals are still important in LDS culture, doctrine, and policy.

Classification And Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball Steward Erdmann Jun 1961

Classification And Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball Steward Erdmann

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an attempt to consolidate the information already known about the trees of Utah and to extend our knowledge of these trees. An intensive study was made of the available literature. The tree specimens of the herbaria of the Utah State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University and the Regional Office of the Forest Service at Ogden were examined. These studies were supplemented with extensive field work in various parts of the state. From this information, keys and descriptions of the genera and species were written and distribution maps for each tree and illustrations of many of …

Theodore Dreiser: Naturalist Or Theist?, Dustin Heuston Apr 1961

Theodore Dreiser: Naturalist Or Theist?, Dustin Heuston

BYU Studies

American author Theodore Dreiser is often considered a naturalist. However, Dreiser's later works reveal a more theistic philosophy. A close examination, especially of Dreiser's last two works, reveals that he was a theist who, for a time, explored naturalist thought.

Dostoevsky On Crime And Revolution: A Study In Russian Nihilism, Louis C. Midgley Apr 1961

Dostoevsky On Crime And Revolution: A Study In Russian Nihilism, Louis C. Midgley

BYU Studies

Although Dostoevsky deserves praise for his literary accomplishments, his ability to write does not necessarily translate into political savvy. Examining Dostoevsky's views on liberalism, nihilism, and socialism, as expressed in The Possessed, The Brothers Karamazov, The Diary of a Writer, and other works, the author concludes that Dostoevsky's faith in "holy Russia" was misplaced even as his vision of the violence resulting from nihilist thinking was more accurate.

The Crusades Against The Masons, Catholics, And Mormons: Separate Waves Of A Common Current, Mark W. Cannon Apr 1961

The Crusades Against The Masons, Catholics, And Mormons: Separate Waves Of A Common Current, Mark W. Cannon

BYU Studies

The anti-Catholic movement of the 1850s shares common features with the anti-Masonic movement of the 1830s and the anti-Mormon movement of the 1870s and 1880s. A closer look at these three movements reveals a distrust among nineteenth-century Americans for any small yet unified minority. The author discusses the similarities among the three campaigns and explores reasons why the anti-Mormon crusade was successful when the previous two were not.

A Study Of The Attitudes Toward And Understandings Of Temple Marriage Of A Selected Group Of Seminary Students In The Alpine School District (Utah), Jerald Ray Johansen Jan 1961

A Study Of The Attitudes Toward And Understandings Of Temple Marriage Of A Selected Group Of Seminary Students In The Alpine School District (Utah), Jerald Ray Johansen

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of most religious teachings and concepts is to change the student's attitude that desirable behavior may follow. The measurement of attitudes and the way people feel about certain religious concepts are, to an extent, determinative of their behavior. This realization has brought about a steady growth within the educational field of attitude and opinion measurement. It has also influenced religious educators to investigate this field in their efforts to get people to attain desirable religious goals.

The problem, investigated in the present research, was concerned with whether the youth of seminary age in the Church of Jesus Christ …

Theory And Practice Of Church And State During The Brigham Young Era, J. Keith Melville Jan 1961

Theory And Practice Of Church And State During The Brigham Young Era, J. Keith Melville

BYU Studies

The early Latter-day Saints felt they were building the spiritual and political kingdom of God on Earth. The concept of the kingdom included political ideals as well as economic and social. Joseph Smith ran for US president on this premise. After his death, when the Nauvoo charter was repealed, a political vacuum was created, and Brigham Young was there to fill it. As the Saints went west, ecclesiastical and political leadership was one and the same. Brigham Young was Church president and the first governor of Utah, but in 1858 the US appointed a non-Mormon governor, and the Mormon-federal conflict …

History Of The Construction Of The Salt Lake Temple, Wallace Alan Raynor Jan 1961

History Of The Construction Of The Salt Lake Temple, Wallace Alan Raynor

Theses and Dissertations

The construction of the Salt Lake Temple is an in-extricable element of Utah and Mormon history. From the moment of its inception in 1847 until its completion forty-six years later its development coincides closely with the political and economic history of the territory. Its history epitomizes the faith of the Mormon people, attests to the strength of their conviction and serves as a monument to their efforts.
It has been a rewarding experience to write the history of the construction of an edifice which has had, and continues to have, such a marked impact on Utah culture.

The Ogden Tabernacle Choir: Its History And Contributions To The Cultural History Of Utah, Merlin Ray Sorensen Jan 1961

The Ogden Tabernacle Choir: Its History And Contributions To The Cultural History Of Utah, Merlin Ray Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present a history of the Ogden Tabernacle Choir, to ascertain the extent to which it developed musically, and to include any contributions that were made by the various conductors in attaining that degree of artistry achieved by this musical organization. Inasmuch as the choir was disbanded in 1949, this study will encompass its complete history. It will also include a biography of its conductors. Because the choir rehearsed and performed primarily in the Pioneer Tabernacle, a short history of this building and the Ogden Tabernacle Organ will be included, as well.

A Study Of Problems Relative To The Fulfillment Of Selected Prophecies In The Book Of Mormon: With Particular Reference To The Prophetic View From 1830 Onward, Ross William Warner

Theses and Dissertations

Prophecy appears to play an important role in the Book of Mormon. The prophets evidently felt it necessary to include a considerable amount of prophetic material in this modern book of scripture.
Three general divisions of book of mormon prophecy can be made: (1) prophecies which relate to the period of time prior to the year 421 A.D., the approximate date of the final writing on the plates of Mormon, (2) prophecies which relate to the period 421 to 1830, the publication date of the Book of Mormon, and (3) prophecies which relate to the period 1830 onward.
The first …
