BYU Studies

Brigham Young (1801-1877), second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, encouraged early Church members to build up the Kingdom of God. Unlike other Christians, Young and the Latter-day Saints believed that the Kingdom of God was temporal, not just spiritual. The article outlines the traits of the Kingdom's government and society and asserts that the faith of the Latter-day Saints and their leader caused them to labor to make their Utopia a reality.

Crabbe, “Clutterbuck And Co.”, Marion B. Brady Nov 1962

Crabbe, “Clutterbuck And Co.”, Marion B. Brady

BYU Studies

George Crabbe uses tone to convey meaning in "Elder Brother's Tale" in Tales of the Hall. Over the course of the poem, Crabbe changes from using a highly romanticized style to a rational, mater-of-fact style. This change reflects the psychological changes within the elder brother, George, showing that Crabbe was not careless in his poetic choices but masterfully uses tone to add depth of meaning to the poem.

Allied Strategy In World War Ii: The Churchill Era, 1942-1943, De Lamar Jensen

BYU Studies

This article closely studies the predominantly British military strategy of the Allied forces in 1942 and 1943. It examines the characteristics of, the reasons behind, and the consequences of these strategies, as well as the reasons why the policies changed in the latter part of 1943. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor, Churchill met with the Americans to determine how to proceed. Although the Americans favored a direct invasion of German-occupied Europe, and the Russians desired a second European front, Churchill and the British wanted to focus on Italy and the Mediterranean as a means to find Europe's "soft …

Background To The Theory Of Arabic Origins, M. Carl Gibson Oct 1962

Background To The Theory Of Arabic Origins, M. Carl Gibson

BYU Studies

In the late eighteenth century, Xavier Lampillas asserted that fourteenth-century Italian poets were influenced by the Spanish Arabic poetic style through the Provençal poets. Lampillas was not the first person to make this assertion, but his argument came at a time when the relative merit of Italian and Spanish was widely debated. Although his ideas were eventually discarded due to a lack of evidence, scholars are now revisiting this theory and are slowly beginning to substantiate it.

A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor Oct 1962

A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor

BYU Studies

The American ideals of hard work, thrift, and perseverance are rooted in mankind's desire to meet his basic physical needs. Since in today's society these needs are not as pressing, the basic American values have begun to lose their motivating power. Today, the desire to be a creative and valued member of an organization should become a bigger motivator than the simple drive for wealth. Some whose comments have contributed to the idea of this new motivation include O. A. Ohmann, A. A. Stambaugh, Abraham T. Collier, and Stanley F. Teele.

Stress Analysis Of An Infinite Cylinder With An Irregular Shaped Cavity Using Complex Variable Techniques, Gerald H. Lindsey

A Translation Of Chapter Lxvi Of Book I, Part I Of Fra Lodovico Zacconi's Prattica Di Musica, Diran Akmajian

Theses and Dissertations

It is common knowledge that the practice of improvisation, variation, and ornamentation was widespread during the late Renaissance. Numerous authors testify to this, and scores of manuals exist that ''teach11 this particular skill. One of the most important theorists to write such a manual was Lodovico Zacconi, a monk of the order of Saint Augustine. Chapter LXVI of Part I of his Prattica di Musica is one of the most detailed of its kind. Because there is a genuine revival today of performance of Renaissance vocal music, and because sufficient knowledge is yet to be had of the practices of …

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin

Plato's Trinity As Problem And Promise In University Life, Obert C. Tanner

BYU Studies

Plato's ideals of goodness, truth, and beauty exist in a precarious balance. Not only are they out of humanity's reach, they cause problems when one overpowers the other two. Universities are in a unique position when it comes to fostering these ideals. If Brigham Young University is to become a great university, its faculty and students need to find the proper balance between its quest for goodness, truth, and beauty.

An Evaluation Of The Beginnings, Purposes, And Influence Of Drama In Ogden From 1840 To 1900, Harold R. Oaks

Theses and Dissertations

During the latter half of the nineteenth century Utah was undergoing physical and cultural colonization. Four months after the first Mormon pioneers arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake, the site of Ogden city had been purchased from Miles Goodyear. The city developed slowly during its first twenty years, but when the railroad joined at Promontory Point in 1869, Ogden became the junction of East and West. The city experienced a peculiar economic and cultural boom not known elsewhere in the Mountain West or along the railroad due to the predominately Mormon population which now was imposed upon …
