Agents, Bayes, And Climatic Risks – A Modular Modelling Approach, Armin Haas, Carlo Jaeger
Agents, Bayes, And Climatic Risks – A Modular Modelling Approach, Armin Haas, Carlo Jaeger
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
When insurance firms, energy companies, governments, NGOs, and other agents strive to manageclimatic risks, it is by no way clear what the aggregate outcome should and will be. As a framework forinvestigating this subject, we present the LAGOM model family. It is based on modules depicting learningsocial agents. For managing climate risks, our agents use second order probabilities and update them by meansof a Bayesian mechanism while differing in priors and risk aversion. The interactions between these modulesand the aggregate outcomes of their actions are implemented using further modules. The software system isimplemented as a series of parallel processes using …

Decision-Support System Workbench For Sustainable Water Management Problems, M. S. Morley, C. K. Makropoulos, Dragan Savic, David Butler
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Decision Support Systems (DSS) comprise a wide-range of computer-enabled applications that are based on some form of analytical model, commonly linked to a database. Coupled with the visualization and spatial analysis facilities provided by a Geographic Information System (GIS), a unifying framework can be developed to promote the uptake of advanced decision support technology across a wide range of stakeholders. This paper describes an architecture for a Decision Support Workbench to facilitate the rapid development of DSS applications. Custom DSS implementations supporting decision-making for a wide range of problems may be generated through an extensible, interactive environment, featuring “drag and …
Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan
Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Presently, there are many population models in existence, but these are often case specific, function at a single spatial scale and fail to tackle the complexity arising from individual actions andinteractions that exist in the real-world. A spatially explicit agent-based simulation model has beendeveloped to represent aphid population dynamics in agricultural landscapes. Over time, the aphid agentsinteract with the landscape and with one another. The construction of the model is detailed, includingparameterisation and coupling to a geographical information system (GIS). The results show that a spatialmodelling approach that considers both landscape properties and factors such as wind speed and directionprovides greater …
A Review Of Approaches To Treat Uncertainty In Lca, Reinout Heijungs, Mark A. J. Huijbregts
A Review Of Approaches To Treat Uncertainty In Lca, Reinout Heijungs, Mark A. J. Huijbregts
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
It is important to know to what extent the outcome of an LCA is affected by various types ofuncertainty, such as parameter, scenario and model uncertainty. These types may occur in the goal andscope definition, the inventory analysis and the impact assessment of an LCA. Information on the uncertaintyof the model outcomes provides useful information to assess the reliability of LCA-based decisionsand to guide future research towards reducing uncertainty. This paper reviews several approaches to treatdifferent types of uncertainty in LCA. It will discuss the typology of uncertainty that may be encountered inLCA, the qualitative and quantitative techniques that are …
Learning Multiple Correct Classifications From Incomplete Data Using Weakened Implicit Negatives, Dan A. Ventura, Stephen Whiting
Learning Multiple Correct Classifications From Incomplete Data Using Weakened Implicit Negatives, Dan A. Ventura, Stephen Whiting
Faculty Publications
Classification problems with output class overlap create problems for standard neural network approaches. We present a modification of a simple feed-forward neural network that is capable of learning problems with output overlap, including problems exhibiting hierarchical class structures in the output. Our method of applying weakened implicit negatives to address overlap and ambiguity allows the algorithm to learn a large portion of the hierarchical structure from very incomplete data. Our results show an improvement of approximately 58% over a standard backpropagation network on the hierarchical problem.
Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham
Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper outlines a component of a study currently being undertaken to provide a new tool for the holistic management of dryland salinity. The Little River catchment in the upper Macquarie River basin of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is used as a case study. The model uses a Bayesian Decision Network (BDN) approach to integrating the various system components – biophysical, social, ecological, and economic. The method of integration of the system components is demonstrated through an example application showing the impacts of various scenarios on terrestrial and riparian ecology. The paper outlines these scenarios and demonstrates the way …
A Community Decision Support System To Enhance Stakeholders’ Participation In Water Resources Management, R. Giordano, G. Passarella, V. F. Uricchio, Michele Vurro
A Community Decision Support System To Enhance Stakeholders’ Participation In Water Resources Management, R. Giordano, G. Passarella, V. F. Uricchio, Michele Vurro
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The stakeholders’ involvement in any decision making process is a key point in the Integrated Water Management (IWM). A successful watershed management process has to be participatory, allowing the stakeholders working together to set criteria for sustainable management, to identify priorities and constraints, to evaluate possible solutions, to recommend technologies and policies, and, finally, to monitor and evaluate any possible impact. For these reasons, any kind of support for handling a fair, rational and efficient debate and for achieving agreements and compromises is strongly desirable. In this contribution, a Community Decision Support System, capable to assist individuals and groups in …
Mathematical Models For Gene Flow From Gm Crops In The Environment, O. Richter, K. Foit, Ralf Seppelt
Mathematical Models For Gene Flow From Gm Crops In The Environment, O. Richter, K. Foit, Ralf Seppelt
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Risk assessment of gene flow from GM crops into the environment requires both the development of physical transport models and biological models for the assessment of outcrossing probabilities. Our starting point is a Lagrangian approach for pollen dispersal, which describes the concentration statistics in terms of the stochastic properties of the paths of ensembles of particles. Transport of a particle from a location (x’,y’,z’) to a location (x,y,z) is mediated by a probability density or transfer function Q(x,y,z|x’,y’,z’). The transfer function depends on the statistics of the wind field during pollination. The total amount of pollen, which reaches a single …
A New Method For Estimating Flow Duration Curves : An Application To The Burdekin River Catchment, North Queensland, Australia, D. A. Post
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a new method of representing flow duration curves (FDC) using a logarithmic transformation. The FDC has been defined using two parameters – the ‘cease to flow’ point, and the slope of the FDC. This method for defining the FDC has been applied to 23 sub-catchments of the Burdekin River in North Queensland, Australia. The two parameters defining the FDC have been related to the area, mean annual precipitation, drainage density and total stream length of the catchments under consideration. Finally, a regionalisation procedure has been developed whereby the FDC for an ungauged catchment can be predicted based …
Scenario Reoptimisation Under Data Uncertainty, Antonio Manca, Giovanni M. Sechi, Paola Zuddas
Scenario Reoptimisation Under Data Uncertainty, Antonio Manca, Giovanni M. Sechi, Paola Zuddas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Many dynamic planning and management problems are typically characterised by a level ofuncertainty regarding the value of data input such as supply and demand patterns. Assigning inaccuratevalues to them could invalidate the results of the study. Consequently, deterministic models are inadequatefor the representation of these problems where the most crucial parameters are either unknown or are basedon an uncertain future. In these cases, the scenario analysis technique could be an alternative approach.Scenario analysis can model many real problems in which decisions are based on an uncertain future, whoseuncertainty is described by means of a set of possible future outcomes, called …
Chemometrics Modelling Of Environmental Data, Roma Tauler, Emma Peré-Trepat, Silvia Lacorte, Damià Barceló
Chemometrics Modelling Of Environmental Data, Roma Tauler, Emma Peré-Trepat, Silvia Lacorte, Damià Barceló
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Environmental monitoring studies produce huge amounts of concentration values of chemicalsspread at distant geographical sites and during different time periods. Moreover, the content of chemicals isalso estimated at different environmental compartments (i.e. air, water, sediments, biota...). All these datavalues are difficult to cope and evaluate in a simple and fast way using simple univariate statistical tools, specially due to their large number and to their multivariate correlation. In order to discover relevant patternswithin large multivariate data sets, the application of modern chemometric methods based in statisticalmultivariate data analysis and in Factor Analysis is proposed. The basic assumption of chemometric methodsis that …
Geospatial Interoperability In Modeling Frameworks - The ‘Geolem’ Approach, Olaf David, Roland Viger, I. W. Schneider, L. Garcia
Geospatial Interoperability In Modeling Frameworks - The ‘Geolem’ Approach, Olaf David, Roland Viger, I. W. Schneider, L. Garcia
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Environmental models and modeling frameworks (MF) typically do not represent geographic information in a way that enables the direct translation of this information between geographic information systems (GIS) and the model or modeling framework. Parameters of the characteristics of geographic features are processed as part of a model’s mathematical solution and are thus explicitly represented in the model. In addition to the lack of semantic definition of geographic information in the environmental modeling process, current modeling approaches suffer from a lack of interoperability. The GEOLEM (Geospatial Object Library for Environmental Modeling) project forms a interagency working group which implements GEOLEM …

Computational Modeling Of Environmental Processes: A Hindcast Of Wind Atlas Over Irish Waters, Nandamudi Vijaykumar, Jeremy Gault, Robert Devoy, Declan Dunne, Cathal O'Mahony
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Numerous research projects are currently being conducted to establish a link between globalclimate change and the risks to coastal and marine environments. As part of a wider European 5th FrameworkProject, HIPOCAS, an attempt is being made to establish this link for the Irish and Celtic waters. To facilitatethis a wind hindcast was conducted for this region for subsequent integration with a wave model. This paperoutlines the experiences of using the computational models selected for this project and the necessity ofevaluating the reliability of the atmospheric model before integrating it into the wave model.

A Regional Methodology For Deriving Flood Frequency Curves (Ffc) In Partially Gauged Catchments With Uncertain Knowledge Of Soil Moisture Conditions, G. Aronica, A. Candela
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper a Monte Carlo procedure for deriving frequency distributions of extreme dischargesstarting from a simplified description of rainfall and surface runoff processes and using regional data ispresented. The procedure is based on two modules: a stochastic rainfall generator module and a catchmentresponse module. In the rainfall generator module the rainfall storm, i.e. the maximum rainfall depth for afixed duration, is assumed to follow the Two Components Extreme Value (TCEV) distribution whoseparameters have been estimated at regional scale for Sicily. The catchment response has been modelled byusing the Soil Conservation Service – Curve Number for the total-effective rainfall transformation …
Optimal Sampling For Parameters Estimation, Federico Catania, Marco Massabò, R. Minciardi, Ombretta Paladino
Optimal Sampling For Parameters Estimation, Federico Catania, Marco Massabò, R. Minciardi, Ombretta Paladino
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the problems concerning prediction and modeling, parameters estimation constitutes one of the main uncertain items that must be taken into account. The easiest way to minimize this uncertainty is to collect great amounts of data. The aim of this work is to build a decision model able to choose the optimal position of the sample point used for the parameters estimation, minimizing the parameters uncertainty. The decision model is applied to the estimation of the dispersivity coefficients, longitudinal and transversal, from soil column experiment. The classical design of experiments techniques are based on the optimization of the amount of …
Analysing Trends And Volatility In Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentration Levels, Felix Chan, Michael Mcaleer
Analysing Trends And Volatility In Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentration Levels, Felix Chan, Michael Mcaleer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (ACDC) is a crucial variable for many environmental simulationmodels, and is regarded as an important factor for predicting temperature and climate changes. However, theconditional variance of ACDC levels has not previously been examined. This paper analyses the trends and volatility inACDC levels using monthly data from January 1965 to December 2002. The data are a subset of the well known MaunaLoa atmosphere carbon dioxide record obtained through the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center. Theconditional variance of ACDC levels is modelled using the generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity(GARCH) model and its asymmetric variations, namely the GJR and EGARCH …

Reduced Models Of The Retention Of Nitrogen In Catchments, K. Wahlin, D. Shahsavani, A. Grimvall, A. J. Wade, D. Butterfield, H. P. Jarvie
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Process-oriented models of the retention of nitrogen in catchments are by necessity rathercomplex. We introduced several types of ensemble runs that can provide informative summaries ofmeteorologically normalised model outputs and also clarify the extent to which such outputs are related tovarious model parameters. Thereafter we employed this technique to examine policy-relevant outputs of thecatchment model INCA-N. In particular, we examined how long it will take for changes in the application offertilisers on cultivated land to affect the predicted riverine loads of nitrogen. The results showed that themagnitude of the total intervention effect was influenced mainly by the parameters governing the …

Real Time Optimal Resource Allocation In Natural Hazard Management, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi, Roberto Sacile, E. Trasforini
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the emergency management phase relevant to the occurrence of a catastrophic natural event, the efficiency of the emergency system can be deeply influenced by a correct assignment of the available resources to the “demand” centers, i.e., those elements of the territory that are directly involved in the event. In this paper, a general formulation of the real time optimal resource allocation problem is presented, and it is formalized as a mathematical programming problem. The dynamics relevant both to the resources over the territory and to the prediction of the behavior of the natural phenomenon are suitably taken into account. …
On The Local Coexistence Of Species In Plant Communities, J. Yoshimura, K. Tainaka, M. Shiyomi, T. Suzuki
On The Local Coexistence Of Species In Plant Communities, J. Yoshimura, K. Tainaka, M. Shiyomi, T. Suzuki
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Coexistence of many competitive species is very common in natural plant communities. For example, almost all forests and grasslands consist of various species. Extremely high biodiversity is seen in tropical rain forests. Grassland communities also often consist of many species. In plant communities, spatially competitive species of plants coexist in a mosaic pattern. Communities with a single species are very extremely rare in nature. However, mathematical studies show that the local coexistence of spatially competitive species is rarely achieved even with two competitive species. Many studies have introduced external factors to promote coexistence, such as immigration of seeds, seed dormancy, …

Principles Of Human-Environment Systems (Hes) Research, Roland W. Scholz, Claudia R. Binder
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents the basic principles, applications, and a methodological discussion of the approach of Human-Environment Systems (HES). In general, HES includes all environmental and technological systems that are relevant for or affected by humans. The basic principles of the HES approach are: (1) human and environmental systems are constructed as complementary systems, (2) a hierarchy of human systems with related environmental systems are considered, (3) environmental systems are modeled in their immediate and delayed dynamic reactions to human action, (4) the behavior of the human system is modeled from a decision theoretic perspective differentiating between goal formation, strategy formation, …

A major consequence of decreasing stratospheric ozone is the increase of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) passing through the atmosphere. Ultraviolet radiation is very harmful to the entire ecosystem, including health of the human population and for that reason, in the last few decades, scientists have placed a large emphasis on monitoring UV radiation and development and use of estimation procedures. Model NEOPLANTA estimates UV irradiance under cloudless conditions on a horizontal surface and computes the UV index. Model includes effects of the absorption of UV radiation by ozone, SO2 and NO2 and absorption and scattering by aerosol and air molecules …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Aquifer management is a complex problem in which various aspects should be taken into account. Specifically, there are conflicting objectives that should be achieved. On one side, there is the necessity to satisfy the water demand, on the other the resource water should be protected by infiltration of pollutants or substances that could reduce its availability in terms of short term and long term management. The aim of this paper is to develop a management model that is able to define the optimal pumping pattern for p (p=1,…,P) wells that withdraw water from an aquifer (characterized by pollutant contamination) and …
Cellular Automata Modelling Of Seagrass In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, E. Giusti
Cellular Automata Modelling Of Seagrass In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, E. Giusti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes the evolution in time and space of wigeongrass (Ruppia maritima) meadows in the Orbetello lagoon, in central Italy, where the control of the submerged vegetation, with a critical coexistence between macroalgae and macrophytes, is the key management problem. While macroalgae are liable to cause dystrophic crises, macrophytes oxygenate and stabilise the sediment and thus control the nutrient flux into the water. This model was developed for the Orbetello Lagoon Managerial Office to predict the development of both groups and test the actions to favour macrophytes over macroalgae, in the context of a decision support system. A previous …
Incorporating Level Set Methods In Geographical Information Systems (Gis) For Land-Surface Process Modeling, D. Pullar
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Land-surface processes include a broad class of models that operate at a landscape scale. Currentmodelling approaches tend to be specialised towards one type of process, yet it is the interaction of processesthat is increasing seen as important to obtain a more integrated approach to land management. This paperpresents a technique and a tool that may be applied generically to landscape processes. The technique tracksmoving interfaces across landscapes for processes such as water flow, biochemical diffusion, and plantdispersal. Its theoretical development applies a Lagrangian approach to motion over a Eulerian grid space bytracking quantities across a landscape as an evolving front. …

Ecoregion Classification Using A Bayesian Approach And Model-Based Clustering, D. Pullar, S. Low Choy, W. Rochester
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecological regions are increasingly used as a spatial unit for planning and environmentalmanagement. It is important to define these regions in a scientifically defensible way to justify any decisionsmade on the basis that they are representative of broad environmental assets. The paper describes amethodology and tool to identify cohesive bioregions. The methodology applies an elicitation process toobtain geographical descriptions for bioregions, each of these is transformed into a Normal density estimateon environmental variables within that region. This prior information is balanced with data classification ofenvironmental datasets using a Bayesian statistical modelling approach to objectively map ecological regions. The method is called …
Situated Cellular Agents For Crowd Simulation And Visualization, Stefania Bandini, Sara Manzoni, G. Vizzari
Situated Cellular Agents For Crowd Simulation And Visualization, Stefania Bandini, Sara Manzoni, G. Vizzari
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper presents a Multi Agent Systems (MAS) approach to crowd modelling, based on the Situated Cellular Agents (SCA) model. This is a special class of Multilayered Multi Agent Situated System (MMASS), rooted on Cellular Automata, providing an explicit spatial representation and the definition of adjacency geometries. The model also defines a concept of autonomous agent, provided with an internal architecture and individual state and behaviour, capable of different means of space–mediated interaction (synchronous, between adjacent agents, and asynchronous among distant entities). Heterogenous entities may be modelled through the specification of different agent types, defining different behaviours and perceptive capabilities. …

A Methodology For Knowledge Reuse: Application In The Automatic Generation Of Operational Protocols For Wastewater Treatment Plants, Clàudia Turon, Manel Poch, Ulises Cortés
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
During the preliminary stages of many engineering design tasks, the underlying search space isunbounded and inexact. Initial decisions are made when information is incomplete and many goals arecontradictory. This sort of problem appeared in Catalonia for the identification of appropriate wastewatertreatment systems in small communities, as well as for proposing appropriate operational and maintenanceprotocols to these facilities. In this case, the Catalan Water Agency proposed to develop two EnvironmentalDecision Support Systems (EDSS), one to support the selection of the optimal treatment (EDSS-treatment)and another one to support the definition of appropriated operational and maintenance guides (EDSSmaintenance). This paper presents a methodology for …

The Influence Of Agricultural Data Uncertainty In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Biodegradable Hydraulic Lubricants, R. Ferret, G. Mendoza, M. Castilla
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
From a Life Cycle Assessment study of hydraulic lubricants from vegetable and mineral oil, ithas been found that the agricultural step in the biodegradable hydraulic lubricant production has the mainenvironmental impact. The aim of this study is to develop an uncertainty analysis of agricultural data usedin the biodegradable hydraulic lubricant inventory from this LCA to determine the influence of datauncertainty in the environmental LCA result. Two parameters have been selected for the uncertaintyanalysis: fertilization practices and machinery operations. A variation parameter analysis has been carriedout obtaining that assumptions and simplifications made (pre-treatment soil operations and fertilizationrates), which clearly influence on …

Interspecific Segregation And Phase Transition In A Lattice Ecosystem With Intraspecific Competition, K. Tainaka, M. Kushida, Y. Ito, J. Yoshimura
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Many empirical studies of ecological community indicate the coexistence of competing species isextremely common in nature. However, many mathematical studies show that coexistence of competitivespecies is not so easy. In the present article, we focus on the segregation of habitat (microhabitat). If habitatsof species are spatially separated, they can coexist easily: under the habitat segregation, net competition doesnot work between species. We study a lattice ecosystem composed of two competitive species. The dynamicsof this system is found to be asymptotically stable. In this system both species can coexist, becauseintraspecific competition is stronger than interspecific competition. It is found that this …
An Interactive Spatial Optimisation Tool For Systematic Landscape Restoration, Brett A. Bryan, L. M. Perry, D. Gerner
An Interactive Spatial Optimisation Tool For Systematic Landscape Restoration, Brett A. Bryan, L. M. Perry, D. Gerner
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes the design and construction of a prototype spatial decision support system (SDSS) for an interactive evaluation of integrated landscape restoration planning using spatial information technology. Landscape planning involves spatially explicit decisions about the types of landuses allowable, and the extent and location of these landuses. This decision-making needs to be supported by accurate and detailed information about the spatial distribution of numerous parameters affecting the distribution of landuse. The SDSS that we present in this paper comprises a geographic information system (GIS) tightly coupled with an analytical optimisation module by means of an interactive interface. The GIS …
