A Spatial Decision Support System For The Optimal Environmental Reclamation Of Open-Pit Coal Mines In Greece, F. Pavloudakis, M. Galetakis, Ch Roumpos Jul 2008

A Spatial Decision Support System For The Optimal Environmental Reclamation Of Open-Pit Coal Mines In Greece, F. Pavloudakis, M. Galetakis, Ch Roumpos

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Mine reclamation is an integral part of the mineral development process. The selection of land uses after the mine closure is a difficult decision, which is complicated further due to the variety of parameters that must be taken into account trying to provide the local community with a viable development plan. Conventional methods used for reclamation planning are characterised by the lack of data integration and by time-consuming analysis. In this study we propose a spatial decision-support system (SDSS) that minimizes these problems, as data integration and analysis are offered within one computerized environment. A geographical information system and multi-criteria …

Effect Of Mud Rheology On Its Inertial Dam-Break Flow, B. Nsom, K. Bouchlaghem, N. Latrache Jul 2008

Effect Of Mud Rheology On Its Inertial Dam-Break Flow, B. Nsom, K. Bouchlaghem, N. Latrache

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper considers the flow generated by the collapse of a dam retainingargillaceous mud when the inertial effects are dominant against the viscous ones, in themomentum balance equation. This flow configuration was studied by Ritter [1892] forinviscid fluids. The more realistic case where the channel is inclined and rough wasconsidered by Su and Barnes [1970] who extended Whitham’s [1955] and Dressler’sapproximate solution [1952; 1954] by using a perturbation series. In this paper, the mud ismodelled using a Herschel-Bulkley rheological equation and the flow develops in ahorizontal smooth channel on the basis of the shallow water assumption. Applying theprinciples of conservation …

Statistical Analysis Of Spatial Plant Patterns Under The Effect Of Forest Use, I. López, T. Standovár, J. Garay, Z. Varga, M. Gámez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The analysis of the consequences of land use (in particular forest use) may beconsidered as a partial step towards an integrated modelling of a land system. Let usconsider a forest territory, where a gap-cut is made, and after a given time period theeventual change in the spatial distribution of undergrowth plants and tree seedlings is to bedetected (see Mihók et al., 2005 and Gálhidy et al., 2006). If floristic data are collectedalong a line transect, we can try to detect the change in the plant distributions along thetransect, the so-called change-point, and see whether this occurs at the geometric frontierof …

Multilinear Diffusion Analogy Model For Real-Time Streamflow Routing, Muthiah Perumal, Tommaso Moramarco, Bhabagrahi Sahoo, Silvia Barbetta

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A multilinear routing method using diffusion analogy model as a sub-model is proposed in this study. The diffusion analogy model can be considered as the next level of approximation to the full Saint-Venant equations. The applicability of the method is first tested by simulating the outflow hydrographs generated by routing the hypothetical inflow hydrographs in hypothetical channel reaches using the Saint-Venant equations and, subsequently, by studying the flood wave propagation in a 23 km reach of Tiber River in Central Italy. The results demonstrate the suitability of the diffusion analogy model as a sub-model for its use in the multilinear …

Influencing Factors For Scheduling Optimal Pipeline Replacement With Budgetary Constraints, C. D. Alonso, R. Pérez, P. A. López, X. Delgado

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We propose an instrument to aid in the decision-making process that allows for the prioritization of needs for the water distribution network renewal planning and to identify these priorities applying the methodology Multicriteria Decision Support Systems (MDSS) and Genetic Algorithms. We consider the various influencing factors involved in decision-making. The instrument developed proposes an acceptable sequence of interventions in the water network, identifying the hierarchy of the groups of pipes before renovation work beings and takes into account all factors associated with the endogenous and exogenous factors and the technical constraints of functioning of the water network for a given …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Integration of chemometrics and deterministic modelling is proposed as a source for extracting useful information from data sets obtained in environmental monitoring studies. Organic contamination in the Llobregat river basin (Catalonia, NE Spain) was investigated for the period 2003-06. From the application of Multivariate Curve Resolution using Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS), 5 organic contamination sources were identified, explaining 87% of the total data variance. Pollution from chlorinated pesticides and alkylphenols showed a decrease in recent years, while contamination caused by PAHs had a rather constant distribution in space as well as in time. On the other hand, diffuse pollution from …

Connecting Science And Decision-Making: A Conceptual Framework Through Organisation Knowledge Management, T. F. Siew

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

There often exist controversies between scientists and practitioners with regard tothe development and implementation of an applicable and transferable decision supportsystems (DSS) in the field of environmental or natural resources management. Thechallenge is to support decision-making through the implementation of a DSS across spatialscale as well as under different institutional and political conditions. Apart from thedevelopment and implementation of IT-based systems, the problem solutions also requireholistic approaches that promote and enhance the cooperation and consensus betweenscience and decision-making spheres. The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptualframework for integrating science and decision-making spheres through organisationknowledge management. Considering the …

Web-System For Air Quality Assessment Of The City Area Based On The Mathematical Modeling Data, A. Titov, D. Belikov, E. Gordov, A. Starchenko Jul 2008

Web-System For Air Quality Assessment Of The City Area Based On The Mathematical Modeling Data, A. Titov, D. Belikov, E. Gordov, A. Starchenko

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The limitations of the widespread methods of air pollution level estimation allow producing quite rough air quality estimations for the areas not covered by observation stations. Application of the computational models to this purpose requires usage of the meteorological observations, atmospheric emissions of industrial enterprises, measurements of the concentration of the atmospheric pollutants as well as the numerical modelling of the gaseous substance transformation and transport processes. High accuracy of estimation and forecast of air quality for such models are achieved with the use of information on pollutant emission from sources within the city and distribution of the meteorological parameters …

Nowadays machine learning (ML), including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) of different architectures and Support Vector Machines (SVM), provides extremely important tools for intelligent geo- and environmental data analysis, processing and visualisation. Machine learning is an important complement to the traditional techniques like geostatistics. This paper presents a review of several contemporary applications of ML for geospatial data: regional classification of environmental data, mapping of continuous environmental and pollution data, including the use of automatic algorithms, optimization (design/redesign) of monitoring networks.

Two Interacting Environmental Interfaces: Bifurcation In Coupled Asymmetric Logistic Maps, Dragutin T. Mihailović Jul 2008

Two Interacting Environmental Interfaces: Bifurcation In Coupled Asymmetric Logistic Maps, Dragutin T. Mihailović

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The field of environmental sciences is abundant with various interfaces and it is the right place for application of new fundamental approaches leading towards better understanding of environmental phenomena. For example, following definition of environmental interface by Mihailovic and Balaž [2007], such interface can be placed between natural or artificially built surfaces and atmosphere. In this case, visible radiation provides almost all of the energy received on the environmental interface. Since all the energy transfer processes occurs in the finite time interval the energy balance equation for this environmental interface can be written in terms of finite differences of ground …

Material Flow Analysis For Eco-Efficiency With Material Flow Network Reference Models – Concepts And Case Study, Bernd Page, Volker Wohlgemuth, M. Raspe

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Material Flow Analysis is a method for determination of material and energy flows in companies for ecobalances and process optimization. Ecobalancing provides a basis for efficient utilization of material resources and energies and for reduction of environmental harmful emissions and waste. Reference models in material flow analysis (e.g. with Material Flow Networks) serve as templates for the development of more refined models in the same domain. They facilitate material flow analyses by reducing effort in time and costs in the model building process by reutilization of predefined structures. In the context of a Thai-German cooperation project a reference model for …

Monitoring The Effects Of Human Activities And Environmental Change On A Population System, M. Gámez, I. López, J. Garay, Z. Varga

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The monitoring and analysis of the processes taking place in an ecosystem is a key issue for a sustainable human activity. A system of populations, as the biotic component of a complex ecosystem is usually affected by the variation of its abiotic environment. Even in nearly natural ecosystems an abiotic effect like climatic implications of global warming may cause important changes in the dynamics of the population system. In ecosystems involving field cultivation or any industrial activity, the abiotic parameter in question may be the concentration of a substance, changing e.g. as a result of pollution, application of a pesticide …

Multi-Agent Models For Teaching, Extension And Collaborative Learning, Thomas Berger, Pepijn Schreinemachers Jul 2008

Multi-Agent Models For Teaching, Extension And Collaborative Learning, Thomas Berger, Pepijn Schreinemachers

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes an agent-based land use modeling approach, called MPMAS,developed at Hohenheim University. The main focus of this approach is theintegration of economic decision-models with biophysical models of water supply and soilfertility at a fine spatial resolution. Short-term production and consumption decisions ofagents are represented as mathematical programming problems, whereas longer-termdecisions, for example investment and migration, are represented using heuristics. Here, weposition the approach in relation to alternative agent-based models of land use and watermanagement and describe empirical applications to Chile, Uganda, Ghana, and Thailand.Based on these practical experiences, we discuss the use of MP-MAS as a tool forcollaborative …

Challenges Of Alpine Catchment Management Under Changing Climatic And Anthropogenic Pressures, Carmen De Jong, P. Masure, T. Barth Jul 2008

Challenges Of Alpine Catchment Management Under Changing Climatic And Anthropogenic Pressures, Carmen De Jong, P. Masure, T. Barth

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water resources in mountain areas are particularly important with respect to new and increasing pressures in the headwater areas of catchments. Climate change has resulted in a decrease in precipitation and decrease in groundwater recharge in the western and southern Alps over the last few decades. This is coupled with changing anthropogenic pressures such as an increase in water abstraction for tourism and artificial snow in addition to the water demands of agriculture and hydroelectricity. Water consumption by tourism in winter is several times higher than that of the permanent population. To avoid the development of water shortages with relation …

A Particle Swarm Optimization Derivative Applied To Cluster Analysis, José Luis Díaz, M. Herrera, Joaquín Izquierdo, Idel Montalvo, R. Pérez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Modern machine learning and data analysis hinge on sophisticated search techniques. In general, exploration in high-dimensional and multi-modal spaces is needed. Some algorithms that imitate certain natural principles, the so-called evolutionary algorithms, have been used in different aspects of Environmental Science and have found numerous applications in Environmental related problems. In this paper we apply a derivative of PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), recently introduced by the authors to partitional clustering of a real-world data set obtained from a Water Supply Company. The PSO derivative we consider here improves several typical features of this optimization technique. For one thing, PSO is …

Community-Based Software Tools To Support Participatory Modelling: A Vision, Alexey Voinov, David Arctur, Ilya Zaslavskiy, Saleem Ali

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental management depends on analysis of complex dynamics and spatialrelationships of ecological and socio-economic systems. Modelling, when used to conduct suchanalyses, is recognized as an effective decision support tool in environmental management.Modelling conducted in a participatory fashion, involving stakeholders in various stages ofmodel building and data processing has evolved as an efficient method for conflict resolutionand decision-making. However, successful participatory modelling efforts require specificsoftware and computer tools that are not available or accessible for stakeholders. There is aclear need for specialized modelling and data processing infrastructure that would allowcomprehensive environmental simulations, based on limited computer programming skills, computer power, and data …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The event bush is a new method of artificial intelligence proposed specially tomeet the needs of geosciences, from basic research to communication with nonprofessionals.First results of its application as well as combination of event bush withmathematical and logical formalisms are encouraging, and the method has shown someadvantages to existing approaches, as well as an ability to unite them and become acomplex integrated methodology. However, since the very first steps, it turned out that theway of thinking that underlies event bush differs from virtually all existing pathways ofthought perceived in the Earth sciences. This paper aims to provide the practical guidelinesfor …

Drought Mitigation Using Operative Indicators In Complex Water Systems, Giovanni M. Sechi, Andrea Sulis Jul 2008

Drought Mitigation Using Operative Indicators In Complex Water Systems, Giovanni M. Sechi, Andrea Sulis

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The definition of an effective link between drought indicators and drought mitigation measures in complex water systems is a tricky problem. In our view this gap between research and practice still limits the applicability of measures more than institutional or technological aspects. In this paper a methodology is presented with the aim of supporting water Authorities in the decision making process to face droughts in complex water systems. The methodology is a full integration of optimization and simulation tools. The exploratory power of the optimization allows to fast estimate drought risk indicators under future hydrological scenarios. The optimization model uses …

Comparison Of Control Strategies For Multiobjective Control Of Urban Wastewater Systems, G. Fu, David Butler, Soon-Thiam Khu

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In recent years much attention has been paid to integrated management and control of urban wastewater systems. With the application of integrated system modelling tools, overall system performance can be improved to a great extent in terms of receiving water quality, through development of optimal control strategies. Most studies to date, however, have used a single objective to demonstrate the potential benefits. Control of urban wastewater systems is actually a multiple objective optimisation problem, involving balancing different, possibly conflicting objectives required by stakeholders with different interests. This paper compares three different control strategies for multi-objective optimal control of the urban …

The SENSOR project aims at delivering ex-ante Sustainability Impact Assessment Tools (SIAT) to support decision making on policies related to multifunctional land use in European regions. Decision support tools are required that provide scientifically substantiated anticipations of the effects of future policy options on sustainability issues. SENSOR responds to these information needs at European land use policy level with the SIAT, which is interactively designed with end users (Helming et al. 2008). This paper illustrates the design process of the SIAT under the concurrent condition of a high usability for end users. To meet this goal, end user involvements by …

Community Modelling, And Data-Model Interoperability, Alexey Voinov, Ilya Zaslavskiy, David Arctur, C. J. Duffy, Ralf Seppelt Jul 2008

Community Modelling, And Data-Model Interoperability, Alexey Voinov, Ilya Zaslavskiy, David Arctur, C. J. Duffy, Ralf Seppelt

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Community modelling is a promising paradigm to develop complex evolving and adaptable modelling systems that can share methods, data and models more easily within specialized communities. Why then are cooperative modelling communities still quite rare and do not propagate easily? Why has open source been so successful for software development, yet open models are still quite exotic? One difference between software and models is that software shares some common language. Models often use very different principles, theories, and semantics. For example hydrodynamic models, ecological models, and decision support models may have limited commonalities, In these cases, the disciplinary problem being …

Ict Diffusion And Productivity In Oecd Economies And New Zealand’S Industrial Sectors, Kenneth I. Carlaw Jul 2008

Ict Diffusion And Productivity In Oecd Economies And New Zealand’S Industrial Sectors, Kenneth I. Carlaw

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We compare measures of total factor productivity (TFP) to independentmeasures of ICT diffusion and technological change in New Zealand and a collection ofOECD countries. The measures of technological change are investment quality (investmentspecific technological change or IST) and direct measures of ICT diffusion available inaggregate and in the industrial data for New Zealand. TFP growth is generally uncorrelatedand sometimes negatively correlated with the independent measures of technologicalchange. These findings are consistent with two views. First that TFP is not a measure oftechnological change but ideally (often not operationally) is a measure of free lunchesassociated with such change. Second, that the …

Knowledge Workers And The Knowledge Economy, David Thorns, Hong Wang Jul 2008

Knowledge Workers And The Knowledge Economy, David Thorns, Hong Wang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The paper examines the growth of a new group of workers – knowledge workersseen as critical for the growth of knowledge based economy. The emphasis in much of theliterature is upon formal codified knowledge. This focus does not adequately deal with tacitknowledge which is acquired in informal ways from experience and engagement withothers. Further when issues of measurement are considered it is around information ratherthan knowledge that most measures have been based. Currently there is no internationalagreement on the definition of the ICT sector. The paper reviews definitions adopted by theOECD to show that problem with spillovers from the ICT …

Assessment Of Data Availability Influence On Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling Uncertainty, Gabriele Freni, G. Mannina, G. Viviani Jul 2008

Assessment Of Data Availability Influence On Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling Uncertainty, Gabriele Freni, G. Mannina, G. Viviani

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In urban water quality management, several models are connected and integrated for analysing the fate of pollutants from the sources on the urban catchment to the final recipient; classical problems connected with the selection and calibration of parameters are amplified by the complexity of the modelling approach increasing their uncertainty. The present paper aims to study the influence of dataset extension on the modelling response uncertainty with respect to the different integrated modelling outputs (both considering quantity and quality variables). At this scope, a parsimonious home-made integrated modelling approach has been used allowing for analysing the combinative effect between sewer …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems (IEDSS) are present in the environmental management process at different levels such as hazard identification, risk assessment, risk evaluation and intervention decision-making, but there is neither a well defined methodology nor a framework for the development of IEDSSs. The purpose of this paper is to provide a study on several approaches found in the literature to set-up a methodology and a plausible architecture for the development of IEDSSs. Also a general outlook into the classical decision making theories is done to provide a general and well based architecture. Taking into account the review of proposals, …
