Bayesian Challenges In Integrated Catchment Modelling, Vikas Kumar, A. Holzkämper, B. Surridge, P. I. Rockett, M. Niranjan, D. N. Lerner
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Bayesian Networks (BNs) are increasingly being used as decision support tools to aid the management of the complex and uncertain domains of natural systems. They are particularly useful for addressing problems of natural resource management by complex data analysis and incorporation of expert knowledge. BNs are useful for clearly articulating both the assumptions and evidence behind the understanding of a problem, and approaches for managing a problem. For example they can effectively articulate the cause-effect relationships between human interventions and ecosystem functioning, which is a major difficulty faced by planners and environment managers. The flexible architecture and graphical representation make …
Radar-Based Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Over Agricultural Used Sites – A Multi-Sensor Approach, M. Pause, Martin Volk, K. Schulz
Radar-Based Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Over Agricultural Used Sites – A Multi-Sensor Approach, M. Pause, Martin Volk, K. Schulz
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Spatial distributed information of isochronal surface soil moisture is very important to compensate the inaccuracy of initial conditions and the uncertainty of parameters in hydrological models at the landscape scale. In this paper the conceptual procedure to derive spatial distributed surface soil moisture values from synthetic aperture radar data by using ancillary optical remote sensing data is presented. Different biophysical vegetation parameters like vegetation water content and leaf area index overlay the soil moisture information on the microwave signal and hamper the application of many existing models. Therefore the objective of the proposed study is to test the performance of …

Validation Of The Hydrodynamic Module Of A 3d Ecological Model For The Ria De Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal), C. I. Silva, J. F. Lopes
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The purpose of this study is to validate a hydrodynamic module of a 3D ecological model. During the calibration, the parameters were adjusted so that the outputs match field data. The model is forced by considering tidal surface elevation at the open sea boundary and the river. The results show good agreement with the field data, for both the calibration and the validation experiments.
Swarm Behaviour For Visual Data Mining, Idel Montalvo, Joaquín Izquierdo, R. Pérez, M. Herrera
Swarm Behaviour For Visual Data Mining, Idel Montalvo, Joaquín Izquierdo, R. Pérez, M. Herrera
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The increasing complexity of many data analysis procedures makes it really difficult for the user to extract useful information out of the results given by the various used techniques. Information visualization and visual data mining can help to deal with the flood of information and to interpret those results. Visual data mining on heterogeneous, imprecise and incomplete information systems need different representations according to human perception (Berthold and Hand 2003). The advantage of visual data exploration is that the user is directly involved in the data mining process. For example, it should allow the user to navigate inside the data, …

The Emission Inventory Water, A Planning Support System Aimed At Reducing The Pollution Emissions In The Surface Waters Of Flanders, Belgium, L. Van Esch, Greet Vos, Guy Engelen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The Emission Inventory Water-Planning Support System (EIW-PSS) enables the Flemish Environmental Agency to fulfil its day-to-day monitoring and reporting obligations regarding the pressures and impacts of point and diffuse emissions on surface waters vis-à-vis the Flemish, Belgian and European authorities. Moreover, it helps in the design, prioritization and evaluation of alternative measures to reduce water pollution. It consists of an advanced MS Excel/Visual Basic core intimately linked to an ArcGIS module. The latter is used for locating the sources of pollutants and their pathways to the surface waters at high spatial resolutions. Scenario and “what if” analysis featuring changes of …
A Design For Framework-Independent Model Components Of Biophysical Systems, Marcello Donatelli, Andrea-Emilio Rizzoli
A Design For Framework-Independent Model Components Of Biophysical Systems, Marcello Donatelli, Andrea-Emilio Rizzoli
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Most efforts in the design of software frameworks for biophysical systems simulation have focused on the compromise between domain specificity and use flexibility. Models in such frameworks fall in two main categories: either framework-specific, or “legacy” code. In the former case, models implemented as software components can take full advantage of the framework services, but they depend on the framework. In the latter case, components are seen as discrete units of software, in general of coarse granularity in modelling terms, and the dependency on the framework is minimal, but the potential for composition and reuse is limited. Thus, modellers who …

Intelligent Environmental Decision Support System For Integrated Operation Of Membrane Bioreactors, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda, Joaquim Comas, Hèctor Monclús, J. Sipma, Manel Poch
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The target of this paper is to present a prototype of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support System (IEDSS) that guarantees robust and independent monitoring and real-time control of membrane bioreactors, and at the same time allows remote supervision of the integrated operation of the biological process and the physical separation by the membranes. The rule-based and model-based systems include empirical and tacit knowledge to relate parameters of biological control to the membrane unit operation. At the same time, the IEDSS is meant to be equipped with an automatic learning module of the membranes life cycle that records and analyses accumulated experiences …
Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley
Reducing Uncertainty In Ecological Niche Models With Ann Ensembles, Andrei Kirilenko, R. S. Hanley
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Transformation of spatial distributions of species is a key element for understanding global and regional impact of climate change on environment in the future. Yet little is known about current distributions of species, especially in relation with physical parameters of environment. This is primarily due to limited availability of data on species occurrences, which prevents reconstruction of their geographical distribution with standard methods of spatial statistics. To address this problem, specialized applications called distributional models, based on the hypothesis of fundamental niche, are being developed. We have built a new tool for predicting species’ geographical distributions based on presence-only data. …

Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Biochemical, Design And Operational Parameters Of The Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2, Lorenzo Benedetti, Damien J. Batstone, Bernard De Baets, Ingmar Nopens, Peter A. Vanrolleghem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Wastewater treatment plant control and monitoring can help to achieve good effluent quality, in a complex, highly non-linear process. The Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2) is a useful tool to competitively evaluate plant-wide control on a long-term basis. A key component to characterise the system for control is outputparameter sensitivity. This paper brings the results of a global sensitivity analysis performed on the BSM2 model in its open loop version, by means of Monte Carlo (MC) experiments and linear regression. This study presents methods that were applied to make computationally demanding MC experiments on such a complex model feasible, …
Entropy-Based Fuzzy Set Optimisation For Reducing Ecological Model Complexity, A. M. Mouton, Bernard De Baets, A. Peter, G. Holzer, R. Müller, Peter L. M. Goethals
Entropy-Based Fuzzy Set Optimisation For Reducing Ecological Model Complexity, A. M. Mouton, Bernard De Baets, A. Peter, G. Holzer, R. Müller, Peter L. M. Goethals
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In recent years, fuzzy logic has been acknowledged as a suitable approach for species distribution modelling due to its transparency and its ability to incorporate the ecological gradient theory. Specifically, the overlapping class boundaries of a fuzzy model are similar to the transitions between different environmental conditions. However, the need for ecological expert knowledge is an important constraint when applying fuzzy species distribution models. Recent research has shown that data-driven fuzzy models may solve this ‘knowledge acquisition bottleneck’ and this paper is a further contribution. The aim was to reduce the complexity of a data-driven fuzzy habitat suitability model for …
Evaluating The Information Content Of Data For Uncertainty Reduction In Hydrological Modelling, B. F. W. Croke, T. Wagener, D. A. Post, J. Freer, I. Littlewood
Evaluating The Information Content Of Data For Uncertainty Reduction In Hydrological Modelling, B. F. W. Croke, T. Wagener, D. A. Post, J. Freer, I. Littlewood
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The inclusion of additional information in a model should improve the model’s performance and reduce associated uncertainties. The additional information may take the form of higher temporal and/or spatial resolution of data already used, or additional types of data (including soft data). However, additional data is not necessarily equivalent with additional information as a model may only be able to make use of a fraction of the information in the data, or the approach chosen to extract data might be inefficient. Consideration of the information-to-noise ratio of the data is needed in order to evaluate whether the information will indeed …
Shared Data Model To Support Environment Sensor Network Data In Hydrologic Models, M. Kumar, C. J. Duffy
Shared Data Model To Support Environment Sensor Network Data In Hydrologic Models, M. Kumar, C. J. Duffy
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
With the advancement of wireless communication and miniaturization of digital electronics, long term observation of remote hydrologic systems using adaptive sensor networks at high spatio-temporal resolutions and across multiple scales, has become a reality. However, for large spatial scales embedded multi-sensor networks with fine temporal sampling rates, the amount and distribution of data generated by these networks becomes unmanageably large. While the sensor network installation itself is generally supported by basic data management software, in the hydrologic sciences there is little support available to directly incorporate the data generated into the hydrologic model. We contend that a seamless transfer of …

A Satisficing Approach To Aircraft Conflict Resolution, Wynn C. Stirling, James K. Archibald, Nicholas A. Jepsen, Richard L. Frost, Jared C. Hill
Faculty Publications
Future generations of air traffic management systems may give appropriately equipped aircraft the freedom to change flight paths in real time. This would require a conflict avoidance and resolution scheme that is both decentralized and cooperative. We describe a multiagent solution to aircraft conflict resolution based on satisficing game theory. A key feature of the theory is that satisficing decision makers form their preferences by taking into consideration the preferences of others, unlike conventional game theory that models agents that maximize self-interest metrics. This makes possible situational altruism, a sophisticated form of unselfish behavior in which the preferences of another …
Simulation Study On Spatial And Temporal Changes Of Factories In An Industry District, Hiroyasu Nagata, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura
Simulation Study On Spatial And Temporal Changes Of Factories In An Industry District, Hiroyasu Nagata, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Factories or plants are built or dismantled for various complex reasons. Understanding the construction and dismantlement processes of factories is one of complicated economic problems. The present article has two purposes: one is to explore the spatial and temporal changes of factories at Hamamatsu city in Japan, and the other is to represent the spatial and temporal changes by a simple simulation model. The time dependence of factory number can be classified into two periods. Before the collapse of Japanese stock market (1990), the number of factories increases smoothly. On the contrary, after the collapse, it rapidly decreases. The spatial …

Using A Bayesian Network To Assess The Population-Level Risks Of Endocrine Disruptors To Brown Trout, M. E. Borsuk, Sara Schubert, A. Peter, Patricia Burkhardt-Holm
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Much has been learned recently about the biochemical, morphological, and reproductive effects of endocrine disruptors on wildlife, both in the laboratory and in the field. However, relatively little is known about how individual-level effects will impact population persistence. It is possible that the parameter that is the most sensitive indicator of endocrine exposure may not be the most ecologically relevant one. Additionally, to date, much research has focused on directly reproductive attributes such as fecundity or fertility. However, it is possible that more subtle changes induced by endocrine disruptors (e.g., modifications of growth rate or time of maturation) may also …

Multivariate Spatio-Temporal Clustering (Mstc) As A Data Mining Tool For Environmental Applications, Forrest M. Hoffman, William W. Hargrove, Richard T. Mills, Salil Mahajan, David J. Erickson, Robert J. Oglesby
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The authors have applied multivariate cluster analysis to a variety of environmental science domains, including ecological regionalization; environmental monitoring network design; analysis of satellite-, airborne-, and ground-based remote sensing, and climate model-model and model-measurement intercomparison. The clustering methodology employs a k-means statistical clustering algorithm that has been implemented in a highly scalable, parallel high performance computing (HPC) application. Because of its efficiency and use of HPC platforms, the clustering code may be applied as a data mining tool to analyze and compare very large data sets of high dimensionality, such as very long or high frequency/resolution time series measurements or …
Early Warning Of Fast Landslides Triggering Based On Instrumented Slope Data Analysis, Emilia Damiano, Roberto Greco, Andrea Guida, Lucio Olivares
Early Warning Of Fast Landslides Triggering Based On Instrumented Slope Data Analysis, Emilia Damiano, Roberto Greco, Andrea Guida, Lucio Olivares
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The results of laboratory infiltration experiments on instrumented small scale model slopes are presented. Loose granular pyroclastic soils from the mountainous area north-eastern of Napoli have been examined. The experiments aimed to reproduce the simple case of a homogeneous indefinite slope, for a better understanding of the hydraulic processes leading to slope failure. With this respect, useful information was provided by the results of coupled measurements of soil suction and volumetric water content, respectively carried out by minitensiometers and Time Domain Reflectometry. The obtained results indeed showed how soil wetting during rainfall infiltration took place under matric suction values around …

Entropy Theory Application For Flow Monitoring In Natural Channels, Tommaso Moramarco, A. Ammari, A. Burnelli, D. Mirauda, V. Pascale
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A quick and accurate determination of flow passing through a river section is fundamental for a large number of engineering applications, such as flood forecasting models and the real time water resources management. Velocity is one of the basic variables of open channel flow and its variation across a section is described by the velocity profile distribution. This aspect has also been investigated through a probabilistic approach based on the entropy concept, which also expresses the mean flow velocity as a linear function of the maximum velocity through a dimensionless entropy parameter M. Therefore, the entropic relationship between the mean …
Using Artificial Neural Networks To Predict Local Disease Risk Indicators With Multi-Scale Weather, Land And Crop Data, A. Pechenick, Donna M. Rizzo
Using Artificial Neural Networks To Predict Local Disease Risk Indicators With Multi-Scale Weather, Land And Crop Data, A. Pechenick, Donna M. Rizzo
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The risk of fungal and bacterial crop disease can be predicted using risk models with specific environmental parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, and leaf wetness duration (LWD). LWD has long been recognized as key in the management of crop disease. Air temperature and wetness influence the majority of fungal plant diseases. Wetness also impacts insect populations, as well as pollution deposits. Many parameters are well understood, readily defined, and easily measured. Unfortunately, LWD is a complex phenomenon, due to its spatial and temporal variability within a crop canopy. The inconvenience and uncertainty associated with monitoring …

A Note On Attitudes Towards And Expectation From The Decision Support Systems, J. Myšiak, Carlo Giupponi, Y. Depietri, G. Colombini
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
For long time Decision Support Systems (DSS) have been believed convenient tools for transferring scientific knowledge, ready-to-use and free of political interference, onto policy-making agendas. The concept seemed to appeal to scientists and policy makers alike. The former embraced DSS as a way to get their voice heard, the later were believed to benefit from the easy-to-use interface to intricate models. The enthusiasm had not been shared by all scientists. Many complained about the limited uptake of the tools and their conditional suitability to address practical policy issues, messy and intractable as they often are. Different reasons were suspected for …

Improving Process Performance In Wastewater Treatment Plants Using An Intelligent Environmental Decision Support System, Lluís Corominas, Joel Denamur, Xavier Flores-Alsina, Joaquim Comas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The objective of this paper is to present the simulation results of implementing and intelligent environmental decision support system (IEDSS) to overcome the limitations of the manual control at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Vall del Ges (North- East, Spain). The proposed IEDSS integrates online information with knowledge management techniques and aims to reduce the pollution load leaving the plant, at the same time that keeps the operational costs at minimum. To this end, a fuzzy logic engine (FLE) controls the effluent nitrate and ammonium concentration manipulating both aeration and internal recycle flow respectively. The results show significant savings …
Towards An Agent-Based Design For The Management Of Urban Wastewater Systems, M. Aulinas, Manel Poch, Ulises Cortés
Towards An Agent-Based Design For The Management Of Urban Wastewater Systems, M. Aulinas, Manel Poch, Ulises Cortés
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Urban Wastewater Systems (UWS) have an important role in nowadays growing and urbanized areas. The management of the water and wastewater cycle in these areas is complex since wastewater sources are both heterogeneous and rapidly changing. Moreover, it implies to deal with different spatial and temporal references and to adapt to the changing conditions that might appear in both natural and urban environments. New paradigms are required to be undertaken when designing and modelling this complex dynamic system, since the need to communicate the embedded elements is essential for an efficient and effective management and a better understanding of the …

KLASS (Gibert et alt 2005b) is a software originally conceived for Knowledge Discovery(KDD) in real domains with complex structure (Gibert et alt 1999). It provides some mixturesof statistical and artificial intelligence tools to support KDD, including basic statistics andproviding an integrated system to support the whole process of KDD including pre and postprocessing, provided that the main data mining technique to be used is related with clusteringor rule induction (Gibert et alt 2005c).
Runoff Projection Sensitivity To Rainfall Scenario Methodology, Freddie S. Mpelasoka, F. H. S. Chiew
Runoff Projection Sensitivity To Rainfall Scenario Methodology, Freddie S. Mpelasoka, F. H. S. Chiew
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Runoff characteristics are inextricably linked with climate, particularly the spatial and temporal patterns of precipitation and evapotranspiration. The need for demonstrably objective climate change scenarios consistent with what is realistic under global warming predicted conditions is increasingly growing. Global climate models (GCMs) are the best tools available for simulating global and regional climate for predicting future climate. However, GCMs provide information at a resolution that is too coarse to give results that can be directly used in hydrological studies. This paper quantifies three simple methods of rainfall scenarios construction informed by GCMs for their potential use in providing desirable future …
Step By Step Calibration Of An Integrated Model System For Irrigation Management, T. Arnold, Thomas Berger, H. Uribe
Step By Step Calibration Of An Integrated Model System For Irrigation Management, T. Arnold, Thomas Berger, H. Uribe
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
To assess how the multiple processes that constitute irrigation land use interact, the basin-level hydrological model WASIM-ETH and a bioeconomic model MP-MAS were embedded into a common framework. Following conceptual integration of theories, we here describe the integration of data and joint calibration and validation of both models. Methodologically, interacting variables are first specified from data, then from model outputs, and then dynamically coupled. Interdisciplinary cross-checks and sensitivity analyses improved calibration. For irrigation management at basin scale, we indicate that physical scarcity of water, which restricts the current land use pattern in drier years, and allocative water scarcity which indicates …
Evolvable Biological Interfaces: An Outline Of The New Computing System, Igor Balaž, Dragutin T. Mihailović
Evolvable Biological Interfaces: An Outline Of The New Computing System, Igor Balaž, Dragutin T. Mihailović
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper, we represent architecture of a new individual-based model of evolvable biological interfaces. The model is based on three parts: mutable coding sequence, individual agents produced by the coding sequence and external environment represented by various virtual substances. Agents are able to recognize external substances and to perform transformations on them. However, unlike general computational scheme currently used in evolutionary computation which is based on predefined list of actions, where each action have predefined fitness value defined strictly within current problem, the recognition and corresponding transformation in this model are organized in completely different way. Here we merged …

On The Role Of Pre And Post-Processing In Environmental Data Mining, Karina Gibert, Joaquín Izquierdo, Geoffrey Holmes, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis, Joaquim Comas, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The quality of discovered knowledge is highly depending on data quality. Unfortunately real data use to contain noise, uncertainty, errors, redundancies or even irrelevant information. The more complex is the reality to be analyzed, the higher the risk of getting low quality data. Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD) offers a global framework to prepare data in the right form to perform correct analyses. On the other hand, the quality of decisions taken upon KDD results, depend not only on the quality of the results themselves, but on the capacity of the system to communicate those results in an understandable form. …
Managing Insular Tropical Environment Through Data And Knowledge Bases By Using Web Services: A Case Study On Corals And Herbarium Of La Réunion Island, Noel Conruyt, D. Sebastien, D. Payet, Y. Geynet, D. Caron, David Grosser
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Decision-makers who want to manage Insular Tropical Environment more efficiently need to narrow the gap between the production of scientific knowledge in universities or other labs and its pragmatic use by the general public. One key environmental problem is to preserve biodiversity of ecosystems that are under human pressure. As we only protect what we know, a solution is to share expert knowledge about habitats and species on the Web for educating the public about their richness and beauty. Data and knowledge bases are part of a biodiversity information system that we have built to deal with this research enhancement …

Rapid Sizing Of Renewable Energy Power Components In Hybrid Power Plants For Reverse Osmosis Desalination Process, A. Kartalidis, G. Arampatzis, D. Assimacopoulos
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The cogeneration of water and electricity through the exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources is becoming an increasingly promising option, especially for arid and remote areas, where alternative energy supply is either unavailable or too costly to develop. This paper presents a new methodological approach for the preliminary design of a Renewable Energy (RE) power plant, primarily aimed at meeting the energy requirements of a Reverse Osmosis desalination unit. The design of the power plant’s components involves the calculation of the installed capacity of each RE component (Photovoltaics and Wind Energy Conversion Systems), the size of the energy storage system (Battery), …
