Mogire: A Model For Integratedwater Management, Arnaud Reynaud, Delphine Leenhardt

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In a context of water scarcity where competition for water allocation is increasing, modelers areoften asked to move from specific water use models (either agricultural, industrial or residential)toward more integrated frameworks including an explicit representation off water users relationships. This is the main objective of MoGIRE (“Mod`ele pour la Gestion Int´egr´ee de la Ressourceen Eau”) which is a model developed by an interdisciplinary team for integrated water managementat the river basin level. MoGIRE includes a nodal representation of the water network andallows to optimize water use under several possible scenarios (agronomic, climatic or economic).Agricultural, urban and environmentalwater uses are represented in …

3d Ecological Modelling Of The Aveiro Coast (Portugal), A. C. Cardoso, J. F. Lopes

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Until now the most of studies concerning the dynamics of the Portuguese coastalecosystem focused in estuarine, lagoon and rivers systems, whereas more knowledge aboutthe spatial and the seasonal distribution of phytoplankton population at the coast is stillneeded. The present work is aimed to study some aspects of ecological modelling of thenearshore Aveiro coastal system, namely the influence of physical forcings in thedistribution of phytoplankton biomass. In order to implement the ecological model, thevalidation of the model were assessed by comparing simulation to data to a vertical andhorizontal distribution of temperature, nutrients and phytoplankton biomass, obtained fromthe several surveys performed along …

Go East: A Residential Land Use Model For The Periphery Of Rome, G. L. Ciampaglia, B. Tirozzi Jul 2008

Go East: A Residential Land Use Model For The Periphery Of Rome, G. L. Ciampaglia, B. Tirozzi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper we present a model of urban growth and its preliminary application to acase study of the phenomena of residential development in the setting of the eastern periphery ofRome, Italy’s capital city. The modeling approach we use synthesises the two typical paradigmswidespread in the community of quantitative urban planning: the traditional one, based on cellularautomata (CA), and the (relatively) new one, which is agent-based. In particular, our multi-agentsystem (MAS) is in-between a reactive MAS, with agents carrying out a two-staged decision processin a complex environment, and a model of statistical physics, since we use populations ofagents in order …

Optimizing Biogas Production: An Application To An Italian Farming District, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso, A. Polimeni Jul 2008

Optimizing Biogas Production: An Application To An Italian Farming District, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso, A. Polimeni

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Biogas can be extracted from animal manure through anaerobic digestion (AD) and can afterwards be used to produce energy. Moreover, this process reduces completely methane emissions and stabilizes the manure before its agronomic use. AD plants can be built in a wide range of capacities: as capacity increases, economies of scale in capital equipment are realized, but transportation costs increase as manure and the digested substrates must be conveyed over longer distances. It is thus a key issue to assess the tradeoffs between biomass’ transportation and plants’ capacity. We propose a method to evaluate the AD plants’ convenience on a …

A Qualitative Model On Sustainability Of The Riacho Fundo Basin (Brasília, Brazil), P. Salles, B. Bredeweg, Ana Luiza Rios Caldas

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Urbanisation seems to be the future of the global society (Egger, 2006). Understanding the consequences of land use change and the establishment of urban areas is essential for making sustainable this future. This paper describes an implemented qualitative simulation model about the Brazilian Riacho Fundo case study for the Project NaturNet – Redime1. This case study bridges the gap between case studies focussing on sustainability of water bodies in protected areas (River Mesta, Bulgaria, and the Delta of the Danube River, Romania), and case studies that focus on river management and rehabilitation, in areas strongly modified by human influence (River …

On The Lateral Inflows Assessment Within A Real-Time Stage Monitoring Addressed To Flood Forecasting, Silvia Barbetta, L. Brocca, F. Melone, Tommaso Moramarco Jul 2008

On The Lateral Inflows Assessment Within A Real-Time Stage Monitoring Addressed To Flood Forecasting, Silvia Barbetta, L. Brocca, F. Melone, Tommaso Moramarco

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The role of the lateral inflows component for an on-line stage forecasting model Muskingum based is investigated. In particular, the original empirical formulation is replaced by a physically based approach incorporating the error on lateral contribution that is updated using the stage observations available in real-time. The updating procedure for lateral inflows assessment is different depending on the weight of the lateral contribution in the downstream flood evolution. The model requires the estimation of four parameters if the downstream rating curve is unknown, otherwise only two parameters have to be determined. The accuracy of the new model formulation is tested …

Effects Of Rainfall And Soil/Land Use Spatial Distribution On Hydrological Response At Different Scales, N. Berni, A. Viterbo, C. Pandolfo, M. Stelluti, Silvia Barbetta, L. Brocca Jul 2008

Effects Of Rainfall And Soil/Land Use Spatial Distribution On Hydrological Response At Different Scales, N. Berni, A. Viterbo, C. Pandolfo, M. Stelluti, Silvia Barbetta, L. Brocca

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The influence of spatial variability of rainfall and soil/land use on the accuracy of runoff simulation was investigated in order to define the optimal spatial discretization of the basin to be adopted in rainfall-runoff modeling. In particular, the effects of a uniform versus distributed spatial representation of both rainfall field and basin properties was analyzed by using a semi-distributed model. These effects were evaluated by comparing the observed and simulated flood hydrographs for different sub-basins of the Upper Tiber River basin at Ponte Felcino river section (drainage area of ~1800 km2), located in Central Italy. On the basis of the …

A Software Component For Model Output Evaluation, Gianni Bellocchi, Marcello Donatelli, Marco Acutis, E. Habyarimana

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

As the role of biophysical models in ecological, biological and agronomic areas grows in importance, there is an associated increase in the need for suitable approaches to evaluate the adequacy of model outputs (model testing, often referred as to “validation”). Effective testing techniques are required to assess complex models under a variety of conditions, including a wide range of validation measures, possibly integrated into composite metrics. Both simple and composite metrics are being proposed by the scientific community, continuously broadening the pool of options for model evaluation. However, such new metrics are not available in commonly used statistical packages. At …

Insights Into Catchment Behaviour For Water Harvesting Assessment In The East India Plateau, B. F. W. Croke, S. Norrish, A. Kumar, A. Islam, P. Dey, P. Cornish, S. Kumar, J. Ghosh

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

As part of an Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) funded project investigating water harvesting techniques in tribal villages in West Bengal, India, a network of monitoring sites has been set up in the ~2 km2 Headwater subcatchment of the Chapai Nula (referred to as the Pogro sub-catchment after one of the villages located in the sub-catchment), with a smaller 0.5 km2 sub-catchment operating as a control. During the wet season, there is a significant excess of rainfall (~300 mm in 2006), a significant fraction of which remains in the catchment. Consequently, there is potential for planting of dry …

Genetic Algorithm Based Technique For Defining Threshold Regression Models, J. C. M. Pires, F. G. Martins, M. C. M. Alvim-Ferraz, M. C. Pereira Jul 2008

Genetic Algorithm Based Technique For Defining Threshold Regression Models, J. C. M. Pires, F. G. Martins, M. C. M. Alvim-Ferraz, M. C. Pereira

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

TThis study proposes a new technique based on genetic algorithms to define threshold regression models (TR-GA). The threshold regression assumes that the behaviour of the dependent variable changes when it enters in a different regime. The change from one regime to another depends of a specific value (threshold value) of an explanatory variable (threshold variable). In this study, the threshold regression models were composed by two linear equations. The application of genetic algorithms allows evaluating, at the same time: (i) the threshold variable; (ii) the threshold value; and (iii) the statistically significant regression parameters in each regime. The aim of …

Development Of An Integrated Framework For Assessing The Impact Of Urban Planning On Water Quality, G. Fu, Soon-Thiam Khu, F. Di Pierro, A. Doglioni, F. Primativo

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Recently, environmental concerns have gained increasing attention in the urban planning process. This paper aims to address the effects of urban planning on the surrounding water quality by developing an integrated modelling framework. This framework provides a conceptual and quantitative tool to quantify the impacts of urbanisation patterns on water systems, including urban drainage, wastewater treatment plant, and receiving rivers. The development of the framework (known as SSDIM), including individual components and their interactions, is described in this paper, and its functionality is demonstrated by a semi-hypothetical case study. The results show the effects of different planning strategies on receiving …

A Neural Network Approach For Selecting The Most Relevant Variables For Foaming In Anaerobic Digestion, Jordi Dalmau, Joaquim Comas, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda, Eric Latrille, Jean-Philippe Steyer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Activated sludge processes are complex biological systems in which organic matter and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) are removed from wastewater. One of the most common alternatives for the treatment of waste from activated sludge systems is Anaerobic Digestion (AD). AD is even a more complex biological process. One of the most important problems which can appear in anaerobic digesters is foaming. In the literature there is not a big agreement on the foaming causes. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to apply a methodology based on artificial neural networks to determine the most relevant variables for foaming diagnosis in …

A Toolbox For The Identification Of Parsimonious Semi-Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Models: Application To The Upper Lee Catchment, B. Orellana, I. G. Pechlivanidis, Neil Mcintyre, H. S. Wheater, T. Wagener Jul 2008

A Toolbox For The Identification Of Parsimonious Semi-Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Models: Application To The Upper Lee Catchment, B. Orellana, I. G. Pechlivanidis, Neil Mcintyre, H. S. Wheater, T. Wagener

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In operational hydrology identification of an appropriate model structure and suitable parameter sets for a specific catchment is a challenging task. This identification process is often based on data availability, catchment characteristics and modelling objectives, and will often result in a range of different model structures. This process of model identification becomes even more challenging when moving from lumped to distributed models as the potential number of model parameters increases proportionally to the number of spatial units considered, and due to the existence of ungauged spatial units. A Semi-Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox (RRMT-SD) has been developed to estimate continuous streamflow …

Integrated Solution Support System For Water Management, Ayalew Kassahun, M. Blind, A. Krause, Onno Roosenschoon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Solving water management problems involves technical, social, economic, political and legal challenges and thus requires an integrated approach involving people from different backgrounds and roles. The integrated approach has been given a prominent role within the European Union’s Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD requires an integrated approach in water management to achieve good ecological status of all water bodies. It consists amongst others of the following main planning stages: describing objectives, assessing present state, identifying gaps between objectives and present state, developing management plan, implementing measures and evaluating their impacts. The directive prescribes broad participation and consultation to achieve …

An Evolutionary Bayesian Belief Networkbased Methodology For Adaptive Water Management, R. Farmani, Dragan Savic Jul 2008

An Evolutionary Bayesian Belief Networkbased Methodology For Adaptive Water Management, R. Farmani, Dragan Savic

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents an approach for constructing and testing a decision analysis process for adaptive water management under uncertainty. Water resources management as a complex dynamic system contains nonlinearities, feedback loops, and delays. Qualitative system dynamics modelling (e.g. causal loop diagram) is employed within a participatory integrated framework (integrating social, environmental and economic elements) to identify major drivers and their trends, potential evolutionary paths and their interdependencies, and also possible actions that can be taken to reduce impact of these drivers. An evolutionary Bayesian belief network-based methodology is developed to guide stepwise decision making during the transition process taking into …

Land Subsidence Induced By Groundwater Extraction: The Case Of Bologna, G. Darini, G. Modoni, M. Saroli, P. Croce

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A comprehensive investigation of the subsidence induced in the area of Bologna (Italy) by groundwater extraction is presented. Initially, the geological pattern of the region is reviewed in order to identify the large scale subsoil features governing the water flow regime and the ground displacements. Several types of data, covering the different aspects of the problem are then combined into a Geographical Information System and interpolated data by means of geostatistical analyses. A detailed reconstruction of subsidence over the considered area is accomplished by processing available topographical measurements. The subsoil stratigraphy, the physical, hydraulic and the mechanical characteristics of the …

Role Of Models For Building An Efficient Monitoring Design, Marina G. Erechtchoukova, Peter A. Khaiter

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Efficient assessment of water quality requires an integrated approach incorporating such tools as sampling programs supplying data for statistically valid assessment along with watershed and water quality models which are used to transform the collected data into information. It is important to quantify and possibly to reduce the uncertainty of the information supplied by a monitoring system. The paper describes the algorithm for an efficient temporal monitoring design for data collection at a given site of a fixed station tiered monitoring system. The algorithm takes into account features of models used to obtain estimates of investigated water quality indicators. Efficiency …

Mathematical Modelling Of Aerosol Transport And Deposition: Analytic Formulae For Fast Computation, Robert Mckibbin Jul 2008

Mathematical Modelling Of Aerosol Transport And Deposition: Analytic Formulae For Fast Computation, Robert Mckibbin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Solid and liquid particles (aerosols) ejected into the atmosphere by volcanic orhydrothermal eruptions, dust and sand swept up by storms or from other pollution sources, and droplets from crop-spraying, are subsequently dispersed by atmospheric wind currents. The particles fall under gravity while being advected by the mean wind and dispersed byturbulence. Particle sizes are generally not uniform, and may also change during flight(perhaps by particle coalescence and/or fragmentation, or, in the case of fluids, byevaporation or condensation) with consequent change to the settling speed. The wind mayalso change with elevation (and with time) and particles may be trapped on crop or forestfoliage …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

New generation of electric power plants and industrial plants are important emission sources generally surrounding large, medium and small cities. Future tendencies on energy production envision that the growing demand of electricity will push forward the need to construct more electric power plants with different combustion material. In Spain, the growing electric energy demand has conducted to a growing market on natural gas combined cycle electric power plants. The air quality impact of such a plant is considerable smaller than the old ones but the modern EU Air Quality legislation is starting to obligate to control the air quality impact …

Data Mining Vs. Mathematical Modelling: Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos Theory, T. Morales-Acoltzi, A. Medel-Rojas, F. J. Morales-Aceves, E. Cortes-Perez, X. Morales-Calva Jul 2008

Data Mining Vs. Mathematical Modelling: Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos Theory, T. Morales-Acoltzi, A. Medel-Rojas, F. J. Morales-Aceves, E. Cortes-Perez, X. Morales-Calva

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Temporal behavior of natural phenomena has been difficult to characterize and quantify[Boxian et al. 1994; Broomhead et al. 1986]. Complexity of a natural phenomenon does notdepend on the number of causes that govern it but essentially on the number of theirinterconnections, on the magnitude of such linkages and on the feed-back processes[Drazing, 1992]. An extraordinary advance of the environmental sciences will take place inthe next years as a result the new technologies used in data mining [Sivakumar, 2000;Sivakumar, 2004; Turcotte, 2003]. Specifically, nonlinear analysis it is known that thelong-term behavior of the motion and states of the atmosphere can be …

Forest Biomass Sustainable Use For Energy Production: A Dynamic Optimization Problem, F. Frombo, R. Minciardi, M. Robba, F. Rosso, Roberto Sacile

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The use of forest biomass for energy production requires a careful attention to the sustainable silvicultural practices that can guarantee the satisfaction of the environmental constraints, the control of the forest growth, the carbon stock, and the CO2 emissions. This is a complex task because of the different environmental and economic issues (related to the characteristics of the territory, the energy demand, the forest biomass potential production, and the techniques for forest utilization) to be taken into account. Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS) are considered as valuable tools for the planning and management of renewable resources use for energy production. …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Recent uneven land use dynamics in urban areas resulting from demographic change, economic pressure and the cities’ mutual competition in a globalising world challenge both scientists and practitioners, among them social scientists, modellers and spatial planners. Processes of growth and decline specifically affect the urban environment, the requirements of the residents on social and natural resources. Social and environmental research is interested in a better understanding and ways of explaining the interactions between society and landscape in urban areas. And it is also needed for making life in cities attractive, secure and affordable within or despite of uneven dynamics. The …

Data Mining Using K-Means Clustering And Classification And Regression Trees (Cart) As Post-Processing Methods: Identifying Management And Environmental Factors For Explaining Sugarcane Yield In Northern Argentina (1971-2005), D. O. Ferraro Jul 2008

Data Mining Using K-Means Clustering And Classification And Regression Trees (Cart) As Post-Processing Methods: Identifying Management And Environmental Factors For Explaining Sugarcane Yield In Northern Argentina (1971-2005), D. O. Ferraro

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Final crop yield in an agroecosystem is determined by agronomic management andenvironmental factors interactions. Gains in understanding the magnitude and nature ofthese interactions are keys for the design of efficient and productive systems. Traditionally, this knowledge is acquired for a particular area indirectly, by means of simulation growthmodels (Lisson, et al., 2005). These models deliberately reduce the system complexity foridentifying the key aspects as well as to reduce the dataset required for parameterization.Alternatively, direct information of crop production can be stored in databases, whichdocument what has actually happened in the farming systems, capturing large scaleinformation on a wide range of variables …

Openmi Compliant Import Of Initial And Boundary Data Into A Numerical 3d Model, Peter Schade, G. Lang, J. Jürges Jul 2008

Openmi Compliant Import Of Initial And Boundary Data Into A Numerical 3d Model, Peter Schade, G. Lang, J. Jürges

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Two- or three dimensional hydronumerical models require complex initial and boundary data. Water level elevation data along an open ocean boundary varies in space as well as in time and is typically applied to an estuarine model. Reading model specific files is the classic method for importing the data. If several independent models are used in par-allel, each one will require its own file format or programmable interface. Although these multimodel forecasts may deliver more reliable results, the additional effort raises the threshold for accomplishing the work in a reasonable amount of time. The OpenMI compli-ant approach provides a standardized …
