Synthesis, Rna Binding And Antibacterial Studies Of 2-Dos Mimetics And Development Of Polymer Supported Nanoparticle Catalysts For Nitroarene And Azide Reduction, Venkata Reddy Udumula Jun 2015

Synthesis, Rna Binding And Antibacterial Studies Of 2-Dos Mimetics And Development Of Polymer Supported Nanoparticle Catalysts For Nitroarene And Azide Reduction, Venkata Reddy Udumula

Theses and Dissertations

Project I 2-Deoxystreptamine (2-DOS), the most conserved central scaffold of aminoglycosides, is known to specifically recognize the 5'-GU-'3 sequence step through highly conserved hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions within and without the context of aminoglycosides (Figure 1a). We proposed that a novel monomeric unnatural amino acid building block using 2-DOS as a template would allow us to develop RNA binding molecules with higher affinity and selectivity than those currently available. Conjugating two or more of the monomeric building blocks by an amide bond would introduce extra hydrogen bonding donors and acceptors that are absent in natural aminoglycosides and increase specificity …

On The Free Surface Skipping Characteristics Of Highly Deformable Elastic Spheres, Randy C. Hurd Jun 2015

On The Free Surface Skipping Characteristics Of Highly Deformable Elastic Spheres, Randy C. Hurd

Theses and Dissertations

When a highly deformable elastic sphere impacts a water surface at an oblique angle it can skip several times in a manner similar to a skipping stone. However, this sphere seems to skip more readily and with more ease than a traditional skipping stone. This thesis examines the improved skipping characteristics of highly deformable elastic spheres made from cured silicone rubber. The effect of impact velocity, impact angle, sphere diamter and material shear modulus on ricochet trajectory is experimentally examined using high speed photography and image processing techniques. Experimental evaluation shows that deformation is the primary contributor to an increased …

Identifying Knowledge And Understanding Of Learning Disabilities In High School Students Classified With Learning Disabilities, Kylie Ann Roth Jun 2015

Identifying Knowledge And Understanding Of Learning Disabilities In High School Students Classified With Learning Disabilities, Kylie Ann Roth

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that students with learning disabilities know little about their condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the depth and breadth of high school students' understanding of their learning disabilities. Using semi-structured individual interviews, the researcher collected, transcribed, and analyzed data to determine 12 participants' knowledge of learning disabilities, about how they learn, and about their potential to succeed in school and adult life. Results indicate varying levels of self-knowledge and varying perceptions of future success.

Octahedral Extensions And Proofs Of Two Conjectures Of Wong, Kevin Ronald Childers Jun 2015

Octahedral Extensions And Proofs Of Two Conjectures Of Wong, Kevin Ronald Childers

Theses and Dissertations

Consider a non-Galois cubic extension K/Q ramified at a single prime p > 3. We show that if K is a subfield of an S_4-extension L/Q ramified only at p, we can determine the Artin conductor of the projective representation associated to L/Q, which is based on whether or not K/Q is totally real. We also show that the number of S_4-extensions of this type with K as a subfield is of the form 2^n - 1 for some n >= 0. If K/Q is totally real, n > 1. This proves two conjectures of Siman Wong.

Who Benefits From Income Inequality? An International Examinationof The Relationship Between Income Inequalityand Student Achievement, Christina Ruth Edmunds Jun 2015

Who Benefits From Income Inequality? An International Examinationof The Relationship Between Income Inequalityand Student Achievement, Christina Ruth Edmunds

Theses and Dissertations

This study directly tests the relationship between income inequality and student mathematics achievement. Furthermore, I examine the degree to which the relationship between income inequality and student achievement is moderated by student SES. To test these relationships, I created a database of national wealth measures and linked it with student achievement data from the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The results of multilevel models indicated that income inequality is negatively related to student achievement scores. Additionally, this relationship is not moderated by student SES, indicating that the relationship between income inequality and student achievement is the same for …

A Study Of Allylic Aminations As Catalyzed By Heterobimetallic Pd-Ti Complexes, Diana Lauren Ellis Jun 2015

A Study Of Allylic Aminations As Catalyzed By Heterobimetallic Pd-Ti Complexes, Diana Lauren Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

Heterobimetallic complexes present a unique approach to catalyzing challenging reactions. By having two metals in close proximity to each other, the metals are able to interact and alter their electronics in a way that simple organic ligands (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur etc.) cannot. Our studies of heterobimetallic complexes focus on a Pd–Ti complex. The complex features a dative interaction between the palladium and the titanium held together by a phosphonamide scaffold. This interaction increases the electrophilicity of the palladium and makes it a very suitable catalyst for allylic amination reactions. We have conducted extensive studies of this catalyst in allylic aminations, …

State Of Love And Love Of State In Chaucer's Epic, Troilus And Criseyde, Robert Allen Fuller Jun 2015

State Of Love And Love Of State In Chaucer's Epic, Troilus And Criseyde, Robert Allen Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Chaucer scholars have long recognized the generic complexity of Troilus and Criseyde, but they have tended to read it primarily as a tragedy or romance or as a text whose genre is sui generis. The following essay attempts to read Troilus and Criseyde as an epic and to articulate how such a generic lens would reorient readings of the text. To do so, fresh definition is given to the term “epic,” and insights from genre theory are drawn upon. Ultimately, Troilus and Criseyde is an epic poem because it invests within the composite hero of two lovers the fact that …

English Learners' Participation In Mathematical Discourse, Lindsay Marie Merrill Jun 2015

English Learners' Participation In Mathematical Discourse, Lindsay Marie Merrill

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increasing diversity of mathematics classrooms today, teachers need guidance on how to support English Learners (ELs) in mathematics classes in a way that situates language learning within mathematical activity. Unfortunately, neither mathematics education research nor EL education research is sure how to navigate the complexity of teaching ELs mathematics while supporting both their language development and their mathematical development through their participation in mathematical activity. This study examined ELs' participation in mathematical Discourse, investigating both the mathematical purposes ELs accomplished by using multiple symbol systems, and the way ELs used non-English language (NEL) symbol systems to support …

Cultural Models Of Latino Immigrant Parent Knowledge Of Their Children's Specific Learning Disabilities, Harriet Faith Welling Jun 2015

Cultural Models Of Latino Immigrant Parent Knowledge Of Their Children's Specific Learning Disabilities, Harriet Faith Welling

Theses and Dissertations

The author investigated shared cultural models among nine Latino immigrant parents of children with specific learning disabilities aged 6-12 years old. Interview questions addressed what participants thought it meant to be educated, their descriptions of specific learning disabilities, and their reports of effective teaching methods for their children. Although many varying themes emerged from the interview data, three distinct cultural models surfaced from the data on education and disability. Implications include cultural beliefs informing IEP content, knowledge of cultural models enabling increasingly open communication between school and home, and culturally sensitive classroom instruction.

Dyad Reading Experiences Of Second-Grade English Learners With Fiction And Nonfiction Texts, Michelle Lynn Klvacek Jun 2015

Dyad Reading Experiences Of Second-Grade English Learners With Fiction And Nonfiction Texts, Michelle Lynn Klvacek

Theses and Dissertations

Dyad reading, a modified version of the Neurological Impress Method, does not seem to be widely used, although it appears to have the potential to support students at multiple levels of reading proficiency. Dyad reading was implemented in this study with two second-grade English Learners (ELs) paired with English-proficient partners using both fiction and nonfiction texts. This qualitative study employed an action research method, using the following data sources: video observations, student interviews, weekly dyad observations, anecdotal notes, and weekly written reflections.

This study reveals that implementing dyad reading is complex. Participants needed modeling and practice with dyad reading procedures, …

Investigations Into Non-Degenerate Quasihomogeneous Polynomials As Related To Fjrw Theory, Scott C. Mancuso Jun 2015

Investigations Into Non-Degenerate Quasihomogeneous Polynomials As Related To Fjrw Theory, Scott C. Mancuso

Theses and Dissertations

The motivation for this paper is a better understanding of the basic building blocks of FJRW theory. The basics of FJRW theory will be briefly outlined, but the majority of the paper will deal with certain multivariate polynomials which are the most fundamental building blocks in FJRW theory. We will first describe what is already known about these polynomials and then discuss several properties we proved as well as conjectures we disproved. We also introduce a new conjecture suggested by computer calculations performed as part of our investigation.

Using The Offset Panel Technique To Develop Innovative Origami-Based Applications, Michael Robert Morgan Jun 2015

Using The Offset Panel Technique To Develop Innovative Origami-Based Applications, Michael Robert Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

Origami, the art of folding paper, was once only an art form. In recent years, it has collided with the world of engineering and is acting as a source of inspiration for solutions to various engineering problems. Paper, the typical material used in the art form, is thin and works well for origami, but is not often suitable for use in engineering. Researchers have developed a handful of methods for accommodating thick/rigid materials in origami design. Most of these preserve only the kinematics of the model or its range of motion. Not only does the offset panel technique (OPT) preserve …

A Career Course Follow-Up: Does A Student Development Elective Make A Difference?, Jamie Marie Hansen Jun 2015

A Career Course Follow-Up: Does A Student Development Elective Make A Difference?, Jamie Marie Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Since its inception, work and career-related issues have been central to the aims and scope of counseling psychology as a discipline. One common career counseling intervention in the University setting is to offer elective, credit-bearing courses in career development and exploration to provide help and direction to college students as they decide on majors and prepare for careers. Much research has been conducted which suggests that the use of career courses in the university setting has strong, positive impact on students' career decision-making ability and other output variables. What is less established is the impact of these career courses on …

Evaluation And Refinement Of Generalized B-Splines, Ian Daniel Henriksen Jun 2015

Evaluation And Refinement Of Generalized B-Splines, Ian Daniel Henriksen

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis a method for direct evaluation of Generalized B-splines (GB-splines) via the representation of these curves as piecewise functions is presented. A local structure is introduced that makes the GB-spline curves more amenable to the integration used in constructing bases of higher degree. This basis is used to perform direct computation of piecewise representation of GB-spline bases and curves. Algorithms for refinement using these local structures are also developed.

Temperature Control In Friction Stir Welding Using Model Predictive Control, Brandon Scott Taysom Jun 2015

Temperature Control In Friction Stir Welding Using Model Predictive Control, Brandon Scott Taysom

Theses and Dissertations

Temperature is a very important process parameter in Friction Stir Welding (FSW), but until lately active control of temperature has not been practiced. Recently, temperature control via a PID controller has proven to be effective. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control method that holds promise, but has not been attempted in FSW before. Two different model forms are developed for MPC and are evaluated. The first is a simple first-order plus dead time (FOPDT) model. The second is the Hybrid Heat Source model and is more complex; it combines the heat source method and a 1D discretized thermal model …

Studies On The Roles Of Translationally Recoded Proteins From Cyclooxygenase-1 And Nucleobindin Genes In Autophagy, Jonathan J. Lee Jun 2015

Studies On The Roles Of Translationally Recoded Proteins From Cyclooxygenase-1 And Nucleobindin Genes In Autophagy, Jonathan J. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in next-generation sequencing and ribosomal profiling methods highlight that the proteome is likely orders of magnitude larger than previously thought. This expansion potentially occurs through translational recoding, a process that results in the expression of multiple variations of a protein from a single messenger RNA. Our laboratory demonstrated that cyclooxygenase-3/1b (COX-3/1b), a frameshifted, intron-1-retaining, alternative splice variant from the COX-1 gene, is multiply recoded, which results in the translation of at least seven different COX-3 proteins. Two of the recoded COX-3 proteins that we identified are active prostaglandin synthases and are inhibited by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Here we …

Baselines To Detect Population Stability Of Threatened Alpine Plant Packera Franciscana (Asteraceae), James F. Fowler, Carolyn Hull Sieg, Shaula Hedwall May 2015

Baselines To Detect Population Stability Of Threatened Alpine Plant Packera Franciscana (Asteraceae), James F. Fowler, Carolyn Hull Sieg, Shaula Hedwall

Western North American Naturalist

Population size and density estimates have traditionally been acceptable ways to track species’ response to changing environments; however, species’ population centroid elevation has recently been an equally important metric. Packera franciscana (Greene) W.A. Weber and Á. Löve (Asteraceae; San Francisco Peaks ragwort) is a single mountain endemic plant found only in upper treeline and alpine talus habitats of the San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona and is listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. We used 2 recreational trails, which pass through its elevational distribution in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness …

Bayesian Model For Antarctic Accumulation And Proposing Field Measurement, Philip White, Shane Reese May 2015

Bayesian Model For Antarctic Accumulation And Proposing Field Measurement, Philip White, Shane Reese

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Antarctica’s significance to the global climate is due to the vast amounts of water stored in its ice sheet. Indeed, its ice sheet stores enough water to increase the global sea level by about 200 feet if it were to melt. Even though radical climate change could not melt the entire Antarctic ice sheet for thousands of years, smaller, more realistic changes would still make a significant impact in the global climate, sea level, and growing seasons. For this reason, climatologists and geologists model water accumulation and loss over the Antarctic ice sheet. Accumulation, as defined here, is the net …

Religious Principles And The Stakeholder Perspective: A Natural Union, Jordan Nielsen, Brad Agle May 2015

Religious Principles And The Stakeholder Perspective: A Natural Union, Jordan Nielsen, Brad Agle

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this research is to provide moral (normative) underpinnings for a stakeholder perspective of business management through the consideration of commonly-followed Christian religious principles. Religious principles are a rich and pervasive source of normative values, but in the corporate world moral values have long been ignored or subordinated—leading to what scholars have called the “divided life”, embracing moral imperatives outside the workplace while ignoring them within (Naughton & Alford, 2012). Ghoshal (2006) criticized this mindset, blaming it’s propagation on a view of management inspired by “amoral theories…[thus freeing individuals] from any sense of moral responsibility” (p.76). The traditional …

Look Sharp! How Eye Tracking And Memory Explain Susceptibility To Phishing, Ian Jones, Anthony Vance May 2015

Look Sharp! How Eye Tracking And Memory Explain Susceptibility To Phishing, Ian Jones, Anthony Vance

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Warning messages are one of the last lines of defense in computer security and are fundamental to users’ security interactions with technology. Consequently, researchers have actively sought to understand how users interact with security warnings and why warnings are so pervasively ignored. A key contributor to the disregard of security warnings is habituation—i.e., the diminishing of attention because of frequent exposure to warning. Although habituation has been inferred as a factor in many security-warning studies, little research has examined habituation in the context of security directly because habituation as a mental state is difficult to observe using conventional methods. …

Exploring How Dual-Task Interference Influences End-User Secure Behavior, K Shane Reeves, Jeffrey Jenkins May 2015

Exploring How Dual-Task Interference Influences End-User Secure Behavior, K Shane Reeves, Jeffrey Jenkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Finding ways to help people behave securely is of great value and importance to companies worldwide. Policies are often created to help enforce secure behavior; however, policies are not always followed, even if they seem simple and clear.

Dual Species Magneto-Optical Trap, Daniel Woodbury, Scott Bergeson May 2015

Dual Species Magneto-Optical Trap, Daniel Woodbury, Scott Bergeson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the last several decades, laser cooling has become the primary tool for atomic research and, in our lab, has facilitated the study of ultracold plasma. Using a novel laser cooling setup, we created a vacuum chamber and related hardware for a dual species magneto-optical trap (MOT). The design of the MOT will allow us to improve trapping efficiency and atom density in our plasma, better understand laser cooling and trapping of calcium and ytterbium, and probe their interactions in ultracold hetero-nuclear plasma.

A Collaborative Conceptual Aircraft Design Environment For The Design Of Small-Scale Uavs In A Multi-University Setting, Joseph Samuel Becar

Theses and Dissertations

In today's competitive global market, there is an ever-increasing demand for highly skilled engineers equipped to perform in teams dispersed over several time-zones by geography. Aerospace Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering (AerosPACE) is a senior design capstone program co-developed by academia and industry to help students develop the necessary skills to excel in the aerospace industry by challenging them to design, build, and fly an unique unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Students with little to no experience designing UAVs are put together in teams with their peers from geographically dispersed universities. This presents a significant challenge for the students …

Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox May 2015

Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox

Theses and Dissertations

In this work I explore the geometry found both in the narrative structures and the internal shapes proposed in Jorge Luis Borges’ short stories and seek to arrive at new interpretations of those works by mapping out—in graphical form—the shapes found therein. I move from basic two-dimensional shapes (lines, triangles, quadrilaterals) to those involving the element of temporality and atemporality (circles, interruptive loops, chiasmus) to shapes dealing with repetition—both geometric and temporal—and eternity (labyrinths, fractals, and Alephs). In each case and for each short story analyzed, either an existent interpretation is favored or a new interpretation is set forth.

Analysis Of Undergraduate Grade Trends At Brigham Young University Across A 20-Year Period, Kirsten Rose Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Grades awarded to undergraduate students at Brigham Young University over a 20-year period were analyzed to determine to what extent the mean GPA may have increased. Study variables included enrolled freshman mean ACT, enrolled freshman mean AP credits, faculty research productivity, student evaluations of teaching (SET), and a university policy change regarding course withdrawal dates and calculating students' mean GPA. Other study variables included the overall grading philosophy of the college or school (normative, mastery, or other) and the course level (upper division, lower division). The study employed a regression model with splines for the residual, or yearly trend. Upper …

Ligament Model Fidelity In Finite Element Analysis Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Mitchell Scott Hortin May 2015

Ligament Model Fidelity In Finite Element Analysis Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Mitchell Scott Hortin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project is to quantify the effects of increasing spinal ligament fidelity on the mechanics of the human lumbar spine using finite element analysis (FEA). In support of this goal, a material characterization study was completed to provide anisotropic, nonlinear material parameters for the human anterior longitudinal ligament. (ALL). Cadaveric samples of the human ALL were tested using a punch test technique. Multi- axial force-deformation data were gathered and fit to a commonly used transversely isotropic material model using an FEA system identification routine. The resulting material parameters produced a curve that correlated well with the experimental …

Globally Consistent Map Generation In Gps-Degraded Environments, Paul William Nyholm May 2015

Globally Consistent Map Generation In Gps-Degraded Environments, Paul William Nyholm

Theses and Dissertations

Heavy reliance on GPS is preventing unmanned air systems (UAS) from being fully inte- grated for many of their numerous applications. In the absence of GPS, GPS-reliant UAS have difficulty estimating vehicle states resulting in vehicle failures. Additionally, naively using erro- neous measurements when GPS is available can result in significant state inaccuracies. We present a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) solution to GPS-degraded navigation that al- lows vehicle state estimation and control independent of global information. Optionally, a global map can be constructed from odometry measurements and can be updated with GPS measurements while maintaining robustness against outliers. We detail …

Concurrent Engineering Through Parallelization Of The Design-Analysis Process, Eric Joseph Wardell May 2015

Concurrent Engineering Through Parallelization Of The Design-Analysis Process, Eric Joseph Wardell

Theses and Dissertations

The disconnect between the way CAD and analysis applications handle model geometry has long been a hindrance to engineering design. Current industry practices often utilize outdated forms of geometry transfer between these different engineering software applications such as neutral file formats and direct translations. Not only to these current practices slow the engineering design process but they also hinder the integration of design and analysis programs. This thesis proposes a new, multi-user, integrated design-analysis architecture which allows auxiliary functions such as analysis and computer-aided manufacturing to be better connected with the computer-aided design. It is hypothesized that this new architecture will …

The Effects Of Open Educational Resource Adoption On Measures Of Post-Secondary Student Success, Thomas J. Robinson May 2015

The Effects Of Open Educational Resource Adoption On Measures Of Post-Secondary Student Success, Thomas J. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the adoption of Open Educational Resources had a significant effect on student learning outcomes in seven courses taught at seven post-secondary institutions. The use of open educational resources (OER) is increasing in the United States. Initiatives focusing on expanding the use of OER as a replacement for traditional textbooks at the post-secondary level include OpenStax, Project Kaleidoscope, Open Course Library, and others. While researchers have begun to explore OER, few have sought to evaluate the quality of OER as a function of student academic success. In this dissertation, I examined measures …

Gaseous Particulate Interaction In A 3-Phase Granular Simulation, Kevin W. Munns May 2015

Gaseous Particulate Interaction In A 3-Phase Granular Simulation, Kevin W. Munns

Theses and Dissertations

As computer generated special effects play an increasingly integral role in the development of films and other media, simulating granular material continues to be a challenging and resource intensive process. Solutions tend to be pieced together in order to address the complex and different behaviors of granular flow. As such, these solutions tend to be brittle, overly specific, and unnatural. With the introduction of a holistic 3-phase granular simulation, we can now create a reliable and adaptable granular simulation. Our solution improves upon this hybrid solution by addressing the issue of particle flow and correcting interpenetration amongst particles while maintaining the …
