J. Christian Bay And His Account Of Hans Christian Andersen's Visit To Chicago, Rolf Erickson Jan 1989

J. Christian Bay And His Account Of Hans Christian Andersen's Visit To Chicago, Rolf Erickson

The Bridge

The legendary Jens Christian Bay, librarian of the John Crerar Library of Chicago, and Danish-American writer, never met Hans Christian Andersen, of course, since he had been but three years old when Andersen died in 1875. And, Hans Christian Andersen never visited America though he had been offered countless invitations.

Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

German medieval literary scholarship has always been dominated by male-oriented views, since research in this field has been traditionally carried out by men. Because of this, the role of women in medieval literature has been of only marginal interest to most scholars. Recent publications, however, have changed this situation, since an increasing number of women scholars have not only acquired a profile in medieval literary research but have also focused particularly on the life and culture of women in the Middle Ages. Thus the image of the medieval woman is slowly emerging from the dark, although most of our knowledge …

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster Jan 1989

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of Mormonism into Great Britain was met with both success and resistence. The major form of British resistence to the Latter-day Saints was through the press. From the introduction of the Church into Great Britain in 1837 to 1860, numerous anti-Mormon pamphlets were published to discourage people from associating with what was considered to be a strange American sect.

The major themes of a number of these tracts have been analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of how the Mormons were perceived by the British. Some of the major themes included the evil character of Joseph …

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton

Theses and Dissertations

Beginning in 1847 and continuing to the turn of the century, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were encouraged to gather to Utah, where they formed communities seperated from the evils of the world around them. While Mormonism continues to be closely associated with Utah, in 1989 it is a world-wide church with nearly seven million members, most residing outside of Utah, and many of these in major urban areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been made of how the Church has developed outside of Utah.

When the Los Angeles Stake was organized in 1923, it …

The intent is to identify and analyze who the early converts were that first embraced Mormonism in England, in and around Preston, Lancashire. The study describes the extant records, the social and economic family lifestyle, and religiosity of the Mormon converts from 1837, upon the Church's arrival in Britain, to approximately 1851.

An Incentive-Based Wild Horse Management System On Public Rangeland, Ray G. Huffaker, James E. Wilen, B. Gardner Delworth Jan 1989

An Incentive-Based Wild Horse Management System On Public Rangeland, Ray G. Huffaker, James E. Wilen, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

This paper explores an incentive-based management system to induce federal grazing permittees to choose sustained cattle stocking strategies which accommodate government-set wild horse numbers and nongrazing uses. Particular attention is paid to constraints imposed by federal grazing statutes. The proposed system employs increased livestock grazing fees to induce permittees to provide increased vegetation for consumption by wild horses and nongrazing uses. The negative impact of increased fees on permittee wealth is counterbalanced with compensatory transfer payments. Taken together, grazing fees and compensation payments induce multiple-use compliance by permittee-stewards and keep their discounted livestock profits intact at some predetermined level.

A Letter Of Johann Grob Of St. Imier To His Parents, Written In Jersey City On June 10, 1866, Johann Grob

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Ms. Elisabeth Fowler of Oak Park, Illinois, found Johann Grob's letter among her family papers. "I have never heard how we got the copy over here," she wrote, "but we did have a cousin (in my father's generation or maybe a bit older) who used to go back and forth to Switzerland." Although it is not known who has translated the 3 document nor where the original might be, the letter sounds authentic and reports valuable details about Grob's ocean crossing and his first weeks in the United States.

Computer Analysis Of Cross Sections Of Leaves Of Chrysothamnus Taxa And Their Relation To Environmental Conditions, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, E. D. Mcarthur, S. E. Meyer, R. Seegmiller Jul 1988

Computer Analysis Of Cross Sections Of Leaves Of Chrysothamnus Taxa And Their Relation To Environmental Conditions, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, E. D. Mcarthur, S. E. Meyer, R. Seegmiller

Great Basin Naturalist

Thirty-eight accessions of 20 taxa (species and subspecies) of Chrysothamnus from a range of environments were grown in a uniform garden. During mid-June, terminal and lateral leaves were removed, fixed, and processed for light-microscopy studies. Area and perimeter measurements of ink tracings of midleaf vein cross sections were measured using computer-scan techniques. Leaf area and perimeter were compared with vein perimeter and area measurements. Area and perimeter of these Chrysothamnus leaves varied in response to the environment at the collection location. Plants native to hot, dry conditions had small, thick leaves, whereas plants native to cooler, more mesic conditions had …

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd, Ronald D. Bingham, Richard N. Williams Apr 1988

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd, Ronald D. Bingham, Richard N. Williams

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The present study evaluated the efficacy of a four-week seminar which emphasized the principles of Agentive Theory. This theory, compatible with theories of a phenomenological-existential perspective, was first developed by C. T. Warner. Agentive Theorists/Therapists emphasize that our negative emotions (depression, anger, etc.), are assertions or judgments we make and not feelings which happen to us, and thus call for control or expression. Forty-eight outpatients who sought help with personal/emotional problems from a department of behavioral medicine were assigned to either a Treatment or Waiting-list Control Group. Following a four-week treatment seminar, the Treatment Group made significantly greater improvement that …
