Prevention And Health Economics, Harold H. Gardner
Prevention And Health Economics, Harold H. Gardner
Faculty Publications
The relationship between doctors and patients in the medical and health field is a topic of recurrent discussion today. The topic is of immense interest because of the questions raised about value received for services purchased and because of the large amount of economic resource consumed. The size of the stakes are such that the debate will grow in the near future until some solution is found to remedy the value and cost for service dilemma.
Migrating Mormon Crickets, Anabrus Simplex (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), As Food For Stream Fishes, Harold M. Tyus, W. L. Minckley
Migrating Mormon Crickets, Anabrus Simplex (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), As Food For Stream Fishes, Harold M. Tyus, W. L. Minckley
Great Basin Naturalist
Migrating bands of Mormon crickets (Ananbrus simplex) were observed crossing the Green and Yampa rivers in Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado and Utah, in 1986 and 1987. Swimming crickets were swept downstream and eaten by four endemic and seven introduced fish species. Included were two endangered fishes, Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus lucius) and humpback chub (Gila cypha). Direct and indirect effects to aquatic food webs associated with application of pesticides for Mormon cricket control may pose a threat to these fishes and to man.
A Review Of Flea Collection Records From Onychomys Leucogaster With Observations On The Role Of Grasshopper Mice In The Epizoology Of Wild Rodent Plaque, Rex E. Thomas
Great Basin Naturalist
Published records of fleas collected from the northern grasshopper mouse, Onychomys leucogaster, indicate that these mice have a great deal of intimate environmental contact with other rodents or their burrows. Fifty-seven species of fleas have been collected from the omnivorous grasshopper mouse. The range of this mouse overlaps much of the distribution of plague, Yersinia pestis, in the western United States; and nearly one-half of the flea species collected from O. leucogaster are known to be of importance in the epizoology of plague. This article discusses the importance of the association of fleas with a hospitable secondary host …
Since Cumorah, Hugh Nibley
Since Cumorah, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
A hundred years ago, the Book of Mormon was regarded by the scholarly world as an odd text that simply did not fit their understanding of the ancient world. Since that time, however, numerous ancient records have come to light, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts.
These discoveries have forced scholars to change their views of history, and they place the Book of Mormon in a new light as well.
That is why respected Latter-day Saint scholar Hugh Nibley wrote Since Cumorah, a brilliant literary, theological, and historical evaluation of the Book of Mormon as an …
The Elizabethan Diplomatic Service, F. Jeffrey Platt
The Elizabethan Diplomatic Service, F. Jeffrey Platt
Quidditas
The critical early years of Elizabeth's reign witnessed a watershed in European history. The 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, which ended the long Hapsburg-Valois conflict, resulted in a sudden shift in the focus of international politics from Italy to the uncomfortable proximity of the Low Countries. The arrival there, 30 miles from England's coast, in 1567, of thousands of seasoned Spanish troops presented a military and commercial threat the English queen could not ignore. Moreover, French control of Calais and their growing interest in supplanting the Spanish presence in the Netherlands represented n even greater menace to England's security. Combined with …
Dreams, Stress, And Interpretation In Chaucer And His Contemporaries, David G. Hale
Dreams, Stress, And Interpretation In Chaucer And His Contemporaries, David G. Hale
Quidditas
As is well known, dreams are important components of many works of medieval literature. one or more dreams can be the subject of most of a poem, as in the Roman de la Rose, Pearl, Piers Plowman, the Book of the Duchess, and the House of Fame. Or one or more dreams can be a relatively small yet important part of a work; Dante's Vita nuova and Purgatorio are familiar examples, as are Chaucer's Nun's Priest's Tale, Knight's Tale, and Troilus and Criseyde. In many cases the transitions into or out of these dreams …
Sodom And Gomorrah: The Use Of Mandeville's Travels In Cleanness, Liam O. Purdon
Sodom And Gomorrah: The Use Of Mandeville's Travels In Cleanness, Liam O. Purdon
Quidditas
The Pearl-Poet's late fourteenth-century appropriation in Cleanness of a mid-fourteenth century work, Mandeville's Travels, has been an established fact since the publication of Robert J. Menner's edition of the poem. The poet uses the Travels as a source for two important episodes: the description of Sodom and Gomorrah's cataclysmic destruction and the description of Belshazzar's brief and idolatrous reign in Babylon. While many points of connection between the Travels and Cleanness in the Sodom and Gomorrah episode have been identified, the poet's dependence on Mandeville in this scene raises two questions that have not yet been satisfactorily answered. …
A History Of The Men's Intramural Program At Brigham Young University, David A. Brown
A History Of The Men's Intramural Program At Brigham Young University, David A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compile and present an organized and complete history of the Men's Intramural Program at Brigham Young University.
The Brigham Young University Intramural Program had its beginning early in Brigham Young Academy history. The intramural program originated as an outgrowth of the physical education instructional program. Prior to 1954 the intramural program was part of the Physical Education Department and the Chairman of that department gave leadership to the intramural program by assigning part-time directors and student managers to organize sporting events. Since 1954 a full-time director has been employed as Intramural Director. The …
Couple Cohesion: Differences Between Clinical And Non-Clinical Mormon Couples, Colleen Margaret Peterson
Couple Cohesion: Differences Between Clinical And Non-Clinical Mormon Couples, Colleen Margaret Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined the differences between 30 clinical and 30 non-clinical Mormon married couples on the perceived and ideal cohesion scores on the FACES III family typology instrument. Two three-way analyses of variance were done to examine these differences. the results provided evidence that there were significant differences between cohesion scores in clinical and non-clinical couples Both the clinical and non-clinical ideal scores fell close to the enmeshed end of the cohesion dimension of the Circumplex Model. The mean perceived cohesion scores, however, showed a difference between the clinical and non-clinical couples. The clinical couple mean scores fell in the …

The Bridge
These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.
A Demographic Examination Of Household Heads In Salt Lake City, Utah, 1850-1870, Larry W. Draper
A Demographic Examination Of Household Heads In Salt Lake City, Utah, 1850-1870, Larry W. Draper
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the demographic characteristics of household heads in Salt Lake City, Utah at three points in its history: 1850, 1860, and 1870. Data was compiled on population growth, nativity, sex, age, occupation, wealth, and persistence from the United States Census for those years.
The data shows that between 1850 and 1870 the makeup of Salt Lake City household heads changed dramatically from predominately American-born to predominately foreign-born. This change in the nativity of household heads over time significantly influenced several demographic characteristics including the location of immigrant settlement, occupational tendencies, and a high level of stratification of real …
Cohesion In A Utah Sample Of Latter-Day Saint Couples, Joe Edgar Glenn
Cohesion In A Utah Sample Of Latter-Day Saint Couples, Joe Edgar Glenn
Theses and Dissertations
It was hypothesized by Olson and his colleagues (Olson, et al., 1983) that "Mormons" were more likely to be enmeshed than many other cultural/religious groups. The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) scored significantly more often in the enmeshed category of the cohesion dimension of the Circumplex Model, using FACES III data, than the norming sample for the FACES III instrument. The study also examined the level of satisfaction that the Mormon sample expressed for their level of cohesion. Data from 61 L.D.S. married couples living …
County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson
County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Utah County has the second largest county population in the State of Utah and ranks 16th out of 29 in total land area. Over 90% of the County's quarter of a million residents live in the area known as Utah Valley, a relatively narrow strip of land situated between the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake. In addition to a large population, most of which was realized during the 1970s, Utah Valley also contains the bulk of the County's important agricultural land. Not surprisingly, the expanding population in Utah Valley has created competition between agricultural and urban uses for limited land …
Observations On The Ecology And Trophic Status Of Lake Tahoe (Nevada And California, Usa) Based On The Algae From Three Independent Surveys (1965–1985), Sam L. Vanlandingham
Observations On The Ecology And Trophic Status Of Lake Tahoe (Nevada And California, Usa) Based On The Algae From Three Independent Surveys (1965–1985), Sam L. Vanlandingham
Great Basin Naturalist
Numerous physical, chemical, and biological criteria evidently confirm that Lake Tahoe is oligotrophic. However, detailed examination of the ecology and trophic status status of algae (mostly diatoms) from Lake Tahoe taken from three independent, long-term sampling programs aided in interpretation of plankton and periphyton algal communities by spectral analysis (supported by computerized data synthesis) and "ultra-oligotraphic" lakes over the world from which future studies may reveal algal communities that may be described as more mesotrophic and/or eutrophic than oligotrophic. Lake Tahoe probably is not as oligotrophic as is generally believed, and the indicator algae in it are not as accurate …
Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel
Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel
Great Basin Naturalist
Critical thermal maxima (CTM) and thermal preferenda of the common fishes of the Virgin River were examined. Differences in final temperature preferenda and CTM for species with low thermal lability (speckled dace, spinedace, roundtail chub) correspond well with differences in their distribution and abundance in the river. These species shifted their acute thermal preferences relatively little as acclimation temperature increased. For thermally labile species (woundfin, red shiner, desert sucker, and flannelmouth sucker), the final preferendum is a less precise indicator of probably distribution. The woundfin, an endangered fish, has a high CTM (39.5 C at 25 C acclimation) and a …

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd
Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd
Theses and Dissertations
The present study evaluated the efficacy of a four-week seminar which emphasized the principles of Agentive Theory. This theory, which is compatible with theories of a phenomenological/ existential perspective, was first developed by C. T. Warner, an American philosopher. Agentive Theorists/Therapists emphasize that our negative emotions, ie., depression, anger, etc. , are assertions or judgments we make and not merely feelings we are responsible for controlling or expressing. Forty-eight outpatients who sought help with personal/emotional problems from a department of behavioral medicine were assigned to either a treatment or waiting-list control Group. Following a four-week treatment phase, the treatment group …

Distribution Of Vertebrates Of The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert, Craig Patterson, Alan J. Redder, David Duvall
Great Basin Naturalist
During a survey of the vertebrates in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, 46 mammal, 210 bird, 9 reptile, 5 amphibian, and 28 fish species were found. Habitat structure and moisture were two environmental variables associated with species numbers across this 1,820-ha area. Eight distinct habitats were evaluated. In coniferous forests, 27% of the birds and 54% of the mammals were observed. Sagebrush/grasslands and upland shrublands were very arid and had relatively few vertebrates. Five introduced game birds occurred in sagebrush habitat. Riparian and wetland habitats had the largest number of unique vertebrates, 38 and 77 respectively. The establishment of …

Parasites Of The Bowhead Whale, Balaena Mysticetus, Richard A. Heckmann, Lauritz A. Jensen, Robert G. Warnock, Bruce Coleman
Great Basin Naturalist
Blood, tissue, and organ samples from five bowhead whales were examined for ecto- and endoparasites. Two species of protozoans, four genera of diatoms, one species of trematoda, two species of nematoda, and one species of amphipoda "louse" were found. No blood parasites were recovered. The larval anisakid nematode, found in the submucosa of the forestomach of one whale, generated a prominent inflammatory response. Protozoans found in contents of the colon included a flagellate and a sarcodinan. The sarcodinan, which was common in the colon contents of one whale, belongs to the genus Entamoeba and probably represents an undescribed species. Ogomogaster …

Effects Of Logging On Habitat Quality And Feeding Patterns Of Abert Squirrels, Jordan C. Pederson, R. C. Farentinos, Victoria M. Littlefield
Effects Of Logging On Habitat Quality And Feeding Patterns Of Abert Squirrels, Jordan C. Pederson, R. C. Farentinos, Victoria M. Littlefield
Great Basin Naturalist
In 1973 a timber harvest of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) was conducted in an area southeast of Monticello, Utah, that is inhabited by Abert squirrels (Sciurus aberti). Abert squirrel dietary habits, foraging patterns, and population densities were compared in the timber harvest area and in an adjacent nonharvested area. Squirrel feeding patterns and preferences were visually determined by physical evidence of past feeding. Live-trapping and field-marking of animals were used to determine population density and trends in the two areas. Squirrels fed in only 26.3% of sampled plots on the timber harvest areas, while 42.7% of …
Burrows Of The Sagebrush Vole (Lemmiscus Curtatus) In Southeastern Idaho, Tim R. Mullican, Barry L. Keller
Burrows Of The Sagebrush Vole (Lemmiscus Curtatus) In Southeastern Idaho, Tim R. Mullican, Barry L. Keller
Great Basin Naturalist
Burrows of the sagebrush vole (Lemmiscus curtatus) were analyzed by injecting them with expanding polyurethane foam. Average mean depth ± 1 SE of four burrows was 12.5 ± 2.6 cm. Tunnels were wider than high and flat on the bottom. Three of four burrows were nearly linear, with an average of five entrances. Burrows usually contained one nest made of Artemisia tridentata bark. No middens or communal nests were found. The burrow structure in sagebrush habitat suggests that sagebrush voles occur singly or in pairs rather than in colonies.
Field Clinic Procedures For Diagnosing Echinococcus Granulosus In Dogs, Ferron L. Andersen, M. John Ramsay
Field Clinic Procedures For Diagnosing Echinococcus Granulosus In Dogs, Ferron L. Andersen, M. John Ramsay
Great Basin Naturalist
Echinococcus granulosus is the causative parasite of hydatid disease in humans and represents a significant public health problem within endemic foci in all major continents of the world. This report gives a detailed set of instructions whereby four trained individuals can examine 15–20 dogs per hour for the presence of this organism. The procedure permits the baseline determination of the prevalence of this parasite within any specific population of dogs and also allows the periodic examination of the same animals to determine if recommended preventive and control measures for hydatid disease are being followed by sheep and dog owners in …
