The Order Of Santo Stefano In The Levant: An Unpublished Account Of A Voyage In 1627, Ilona Klein, Christopher Kleinhenz

Faculty Publications

On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. After having engaged in two fierce skirmishes …

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson Jan 1990

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is about a small Mormon community, Coalville, Utah, during the time period 1859 to 1914. Coalville is located in the northeastern section of the state of Utah in Summit County on Interstate 80.
Although Coalville remained small in population, it is worthwhile to study its origins, the people who built its institutions, its social life and economy and how it developed from a mere camping spot on the road between Salt Lake to Wyoming into a stable community. Coalville's development was significant to the growth and culture of Utah.
The founders experienced the usual pioneer struggles to conquer …

Resort Motivations For Different Family Life Cycle Stages, Brian J. Hill, Cary Mcdonald, Muzaffer Uysal

Faculty Publications

Motivational differences for resort vacation travel among family life cycle stages have not been addressed in travel research. However, from a marketing standpoint, segmenting the resort market into family life cycle groups can be reasonably important. Linking an identified group of motivat􀁄ons with these stages is the purpose of this article. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and analysis of variance are used to evaluate the data. Twenty motivations are . reduced into five motivation factors that coincide with established travel motivations or needs. The importance of family relationship, health and social, and fun and entertainment motivations does differ among respondents single …

Healthy And Unhealthy Forms Of Religiousness Manifested By Psychotherapy Clients: An Empirical Investigation, P. Scott Richards, Steven A. Smith, Lanay F. Davis

Faculty Publications

This study investigated whether 49 Mormon psychotherapy clients and 51 Mormon nonclients differed on a number of religious and psychological variables. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance, controlling for social desirability, education level, and occupation status. Clients scored higher than nonclients on shame and lower on existential well-being. There were no significant differences between clients and nonclients on religious orientation, religious wellbeing, moral reasoning, and guilt. Females scored much higher on guilt, and female clients scored much higher on shame; there were no other gender differences. Subjects showed a preference for Stage 4 moral reasoning, and 92% were …

Searching For A Job In The United States, Paul Grossenbacher

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It was my brother's wedding day and, since I was best man in the wedding, I took a day off from work and went to Burgdorf. Ernst Josi said, "Paul, since you go through Bern, why don't you go to the American Embassy and apply for a visa to go to America?

Leaving The Farm, Paul Grossenbacher

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It was good to be back home again, but Verena enjoyed her first trip to Switzerland very much and she has made about five more trips since. She could learn where her ancestors came from. I was the owner of a farm then, and it was also the dairy which supplied New Glarus and later Monticello with milk. It was a good business, but we all really had to work too hard in those days. But we made a little money, and the day came when we could burn the mortgage.

Impact Of Cattle On Two Isolated Fish Populations In Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Frances R. Taylor, Leah A. Gillman, John W. Pedretti Oct 1989

Impact Of Cattle On Two Isolated Fish Populations In Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Frances R. Taylor, Leah A. Gillman, John W. Pedretti

Great Basin Naturalist

The presence of cattle at Brownie Spring and Ash Springs in Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, impacted fish populations by causing an increase in ammonia (NH3) and nitrite (NO2) levels, an increase in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrophila, and increased mortality and morbidity. One of the affected fishes, the White River springfish, is listed as endangered by the Department of the Interior. After removal of the cattle from Ash Springs, NH3 and NO2 levels decreased and fish populations increased. At Brownie Spring the NH3 and NO2 levels are chronically elevated, cattle are still …

Radio Transmitter Attachment For Chukars, Bartel T. Slaugh, Jerran T. Flinders, Jay A. Roberson, M. Ray Olson, N. Paul Johnston

Great Basin Naturalist

Thirty-seven Chukars (Alectoris chukar), fitted with conventional poncho-type radio transmitters, were released on Antelope Island in Utah's Great Salt Lake. Twenty-seven removed their radios, averaging three days after release. The remaining 10 died from predation (average 15 days). Twenty-two Chukars with pleated and six with harness ponchos were then released. Five of the pleated ponchos were removed (average four days), and 17 resulted in mortality (average two days). All six harness poncho-equipped birds were dead the following day. A consequential laboratory study comparing various attachment methods (conventional, pleated, harness, and "irreversible" flange poncho vs. bellystrap and wingstrap backpack) …

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy Oct 1989

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Changes are noted in American society and culture in the last generation since the appetitional theory was first formulated. A current statement of the theory is reviewed, together with the concepts of motivation upon which it is based. A model of change is introduced, based upon central Christian concepts, especially as they are propounded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The change model and the appetitional theory are then applied to the area of human sexuality in an attempt to provide a framework for a program of positive change.
Address to AMCAP Convention March 31, 1989.

Edith Irvine: Her Life And Photography, Wilma Marie Plunkett Jun 1989

Edith Irvine: Her Life And Photography, Wilma Marie Plunkett

Theses and Dissertations

ln mid-1988, Brigham Young University received a high-quality collection of photographic glass plates made by Edith Irvine at the tum of the century. The plates, her camera and other photographic equipment, and miscellaneous publications were donated to BYU by her nephew, Jim Irvine.

When the plates arrived and the Archives Photolab had them proofed, we realized thal not only were the San Francisco earthquake/ fire and other areas of California history recorded, but we had, in fact, the work of an outstanding photographer. As we compared the proofs with the work of other photographers who handled similar subjects, we called …

Diatom Flora Of Mink Creek, Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, Samuel R. Rushforth Apr 1989

Diatom Flora Of Mink Creek, Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, Samuel R. Rushforth

Great Basin Naturalist

Diatoms were collected from an open-canopy and closed-canopy site on Mink Creek, Bannock County, Idaho, a third-order Rocky Mountain stream. Ninety diatom taxa were identified. Achnanthes minutissima Kuetz. and Navicula lanceolata (Ag. ) Kuetz. dominated the open-canopy site, whereas Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta (Ehr.) CI. comprised greater than 40% of the diatom assemblage at the closed-canopy site. Seven of the 10 most important diatoms were present at both sites. A high degree of similarity was evident between natural and artificial substrates at both sites. Although most taxa were present at both sites, it is apparent from this study that differences …

Winter Habitats And Foods Of Blue Grouse In The Sheeprock Mountains, Utah, Peter J. Perkins, Frederick G. Lindzey, Jay A. Roberson, Gregory Mcdaniel, Randy Berger Apr 1989

Winter Habitats And Foods Of Blue Grouse In The Sheeprock Mountains, Utah, Peter J. Perkins, Frederick G. Lindzey, Jay A. Roberson, Gregory Mcdaniel, Randy Berger

Great Basin Naturalist

Winter habitat use and food habits of Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were studied in an isolated Utah desert mountain range that contained little typical Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) winter habitat. Habitat use was concentrated in the Douglas-fir and pinyon (Pinus edulis)–juniper (Juniperus spp.) habitat. Douglas-fir and pinyon pine were the most consumed foods. Other foods that represented >15% of the composition of an individual fecal sample were limber pine (Pinus flexilis), mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifoliu), juniper, and an Anteunaria–Cirsium type. The breadth in winter diet indicates that Blue Grouse may …

Changes In Mule Deer Size In Utah, Dennis D. Austin, Robert A. Riggs, Philip J. Urness, David L. Turner, John F. Kimball Jan 1989

Changes In Mule Deer Size In Utah, Dennis D. Austin, Robert A. Riggs, Philip J. Urness, David L. Turner, John F. Kimball

Great Basin Naturalist

Trends in age-specific, eviscerated carcass weights were determined for hunter-harvested yearling and two-year-old buck mule deer. Carcass weights declined over an 11-year period from two areas of similar management, but with independenly collected data sets. Carcass weights also declined between the opening and second weekends of the hunt. Management implications are discussed.
