Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman
Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman
Faculty Publications
The burning of agricultural residues, particularly rice straw, has long been an issue of public concern in California's Sacramento Valley. Especially during days of autumn temperature inversions, the smoke in the atmosphere from burning is regarded by some as a serious health hazard and by nearly all residents as a public nuisance. Strong pressures have resulted in stringent regulations over agricultural burning, but a growing number of voices advocate a strict prohibition on burning. The prospect of a burning ban is worrisome to rice growers since burning is not only the most cost-effective way of disposing of the straw, but …

Developing Positive Attitudes And Approaches When Working With Persons With Disabilities, Romel W. Marckelprang
Developing Positive Attitudes And Approaches When Working With Persons With Disabilities, Romel W. Marckelprang
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
More than ten percent of the population of North America have disabilities or chronic illnesses. Persons who acquire disabilities have many issues to face. Psychosocial adjustment can be difficult as they reconcile losses and explore strengths. Societal attitudes and policies create barriers to full functioning. Latter-day Saints with disabilities many face the additional challenge of reconciling spiritual beliefs with physical reality. This paper addresses the implications of disability and chronic illnesses with special attention to issues unique to Mormonism. Suggestions for professional intervention are provided.
Moral Choices And Their Outcomes, William R. Swinyard, Thomas J. Delong
Moral Choices And Their Outcomes, William R. Swinyard, Thomas J. Delong
BYU Studies
This article examines types of moral decision making through surveying students at Brigham Young University (Christian) and at the National University of Singapore (Buddhist, Hindu, and Moslem). The authors present the moral decision making process in terms of rules with no thought of outcomes and rules that affect outcomes. Results show both cultures have basically the same moral decision-making processes; however, BYU students favored decisions that obeyed the rules or doing the "right" thing; and NUS students favored outcomes, or doing what will benefit the most people.
Joseph Smith's 1826 Trial: The Legal Setting, Gordon A. Madsen
Joseph Smith's 1826 Trial: The Legal Setting, Gordon A. Madsen
BYU Studies
In 1826 in Bainbridge, New York, Joseph Smith, later founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was charged with being a disorderly person. In this article lawyer Gordon A. Madsen puts the trial into the legal context of the day and examines the statutory, procedural, and case law in force in New York in 1826. He then reexamines the conclusions drawn by earlier writers.
The Current Revolution In Russia, Seweryn Bialer
The Current Revolution In Russia, Seweryn Bialer
BYU Studies
Serweryn Bialer writes of the Russian revolution of 1985 to 1991. He focuses his writings mainly towards the Soviet Union and relates those key events that affect Eastern Europe most. Bialer lays out some frameworks that might be applied to help us understand events: a brief discussion of the ideas presented by Gabriel Almond in his book Crisis, Choice, and Change; and a discussion of the social, political, and economic turmoil that led to the revolution.

The Lds Missionary Experience: Observations On Stress, Madison H. Thomas, Marian P. Thomas
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
The missionary experience may exceed the stress-hardiness level of some missionaries. Professional observations over the past six years have prompted a survey of factors involved. Six special areas considered are: (1) Comparative models of life sequences; (2) Selected factors in stress; (3) Diversity of mission administrative and priority patterns; (4) Women in mission relationships (5) End-of-mission and after-mission considerations; and, (6) Stress disorder parallels. Suggestions are made for some conceptual frameworks to help in further study of these areas, including a proposal to recognize as a clinical entity a mission-related stress disorder.

Editor's Introduction: By What Measure Shall We Mete?, Daniel C. Peterson
Editor's Introduction: By What Measure Shall We Mete?, Daniel C. Peterson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Peterson discusses the growth of the Mormon religion and scholarly indifference toward that growth. He discusses the power of presuppositions and the variance of opinions, using the Qur'an as a case study. The orignality, literary merit, and intrinsic merit of the Book of Mormon increase our appreciation for that book.

Religious Validity: The Sacrament Covenant in Third Nephi
Richard Lloyd Anderson
I have just nished another reading of the Book of Mormon, and what a wonderful rejuvenation this has been as vistas of doctrine open up. The spirit is a complex thing. It comes as it will, as Jesus said to Nicodemus (John 3:8). Sometimes you feel a burning and a warmth, and sometimes you feel a peace and clarity of thought. The latter is my experience in reading the Book of Mormon this time. In the rst reading I felt the warmth intensely. I can remember my impressions of …
Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell
Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell
Quidditas
Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron is one of the many works that have fallen prey to the contemporary fascination with indeterminacy and the poetics of failure. Increasingly, critics are writing of the "ambiguity" of the novella collection and the lack of narrative resolve that seems to characterize both the novellas and the discussions by the "devisants" that surround the novellas. My purpose in this essay is to contest this view. I intend to show that from a historical perspective, when the Heptaméron is seen in the light of the pervasive rhetorical concerns of late Renaissance writers, the prevailing critical view is …
A Landowner Chides Brigham Young For Not Speaking To Him At Buffalo Canyon, And Receives An Answer, Thomas A. Kuhlman
A Landowner Chides Brigham Young For Not Speaking To Him At Buffalo Canyon, And Receives An Answer, Thomas A. Kuhlman
BYU Studies
Thomas A. Kuhlman acquires a small piece of land he named Buffalo Canyon situated just outside of Florence, Nebraska, between Mill Creek Valley and Ponca Hills. He writes of the historical significance of the land, telling of the times he sat on the land reading histories of the fur traders, of Lewis and Clark's crossing the Missouri, of protection provided by soldiers at Fort Atkinson, and of Latter-day Saints on migration west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. He longs for a connection with the past, but his world of modern-day suffering seems too remote from the romantic past. Finally …

Sylvia Pio, A Danish-American Livewire, Kristian Hvidt, J. R. Christianson, Editor And Translator
The Bridge
This is the story of an unusual Danish-American woman, Sylvia Pio, who was born 1876 in Copenhagen, grew up in Chicago, and died 1932 in Hellerup, a suburb of her native city.
Her childhood in Chicago had a complicated background. Sylvia was the daughter of a famous figure in Danish political history, Louis Pio, who founded the Danish Socialist Party in Copenhagen in 1871. After serving in the army during the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1864, he had entered the Copenhagen postal service, where he is said to have constructed the first red Danish mailbox of the type still in use.
