In-Migration And Settlement Of Danes In Howard County, Nebraska, Rasmus B. Nielsen Jan 1991

In-Migration And Settlement Of Danes In Howard County, Nebraska, Rasmus B. Nielsen

The Bridge

What I write here is not historical but is simply experiences and memories after having lived in Howard County some 48 years. Last summer in Dannebrog we had an Old Settlers' Picnic, but there were not many of the old settlers left from 1871 and 1872 when the first Danes began to settle in this county. Mrs. Lerke Sorensen and Mrs. Lars Hannibal were the first white women to settle in Howard County, along with their husbands. Lars Hannibal and Lerke Sorenson were actually the founders of the colony which was organized in Wisconsin with the objective of going to …

From Campus To Campus: English University Life And The Renaissance Pastoral, Gary M. Bouchard Jan 1991

From Campus To Campus: English University Life And The Renaissance Pastoral, Gary M. Bouchard

Quidditas

Literary critics have relied increasingly upon what we know of the particular goings-on at the court of Queen Elizabeth to explain all things we call Elizabethan, including a vast corpus of poetry. Pastoral poetry in particular, long regarded as an allegorical embodiment of court politics, is seen now more than ever as a product of social and political power struggles. I argue instead that the pastoral poetry of Renaissance England has to do with the academic world as much as, if not more than, with the ancillary world of the court, it was born of the academy, where Edmund Spenser …

Hagiographical Parody In The Ysengrimus, Dennis J. Billy Jan 1991

Hagiographical Parody In The Ysengrimus, Dennis J. Billy

Quidditas

Considered the first great expression of medieval Latin beast epic, the Ysengrimus, a mid-twelfth-century poem of 6,574 verses, has been hailed as a masterpiece of lampooning monastic parody and wit. Composed by an anonymous author (probably a monk of St. Peter's, Blandigny) in the environs of the then burgeoning Flemish city of Ghent, the poem follows the exploits of Ysengrimus, a ravenous wolf-monk of dubious intelligence whose unruly gastric and sexual appetites make him more often the prey than predator in his sundry endeavors. Until now, one area that has successfully eluded the attention of most Ysengrimus scholars is …

Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn Jan 1991

Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn

Quidditas

Long dismissed as an immature play with no intrinsic merit, Sir Clyomon and Sir Clamydes (ca. 1570-1583) quite thoroughly debates issues of contemporary political interest. This essay seeks to restore Clyomon from its undistinguished position in Renaissance studies by showing how it dramatically supports Queen Elizabeth's use of chivalry as an ideology of power and order and criticizes military adventurism. By reading this play as a political text, in this essay I employ the methodologies of New Historicism, which identifies literature as only one of many cultural discourses taking part in the negotiation of power. "Representations of the world in …

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen Jan 1991

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen

The Bridge

If you mix cowboys, Indians, Danes and paint, you come up with two remarkable artists, Olaf Seltzer and Olaf Wieghorst. These two men came to America from Denmark and, after living and working here for numbers of years, produced art that is as American as American art can get. Their subject was the Old West. Although their trips were 27 years apart, both Seltzer and Wieghorst came to America in their teens. Both worked at other occupations until they had developed the skills necessary to survive as artists. Both chose the West as their subject matter; both were named Olaf; …

Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards Jan 1991

Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards

Faculty Publications

The relation between religious orientation and mental health was investigated. Measures of religious orientation and devoutness, depression, shame and guilt, existential well-being, and psychological separation from parents were administered to 268 undergraduate students. Four groups were formed. Results indicated that religiously devout intrinsic and proreligious Ss did not differ from less devout extrinsic and nontraditionally religious students in depression, shame, and existential well-being. Intrinsic and proreligious Ss scored higher on guilt proneness and religious well-being and lower on functional, attitudinal, and emotional separation from parents than did nontraditionally religious Ss. Ellis's (1980) religiosity-em otional-disturbance hypothesis was not supported. Some insight …

Family Stress And The Role Of The Mormon Bishop's Wife, Marguerite Irene Adams Jan 1991

Family Stress And The Role Of The Mormon Bishop's Wife, Marguerite Irene Adams

Theses and Dissertations

A national survey of bishops' wives was conducted to determine whether Reuben Hill's "Roller Coaster" model of family stress following a stressor event should be modified to include a honeymoon period when the precipitating event is viewed positively by the family. The honeymoon period was expected to be within the first year, and too few respondents were in their first year to give statistically significant evidence of such a pattern. Several measures did give non-significant evidence of a honeymoon phase, though.

Other factors found to have an important effect on the stressfulness of the position of bishop's wife were: age …

Utah Indians And The Indian Slave Trade: The Mormon Adoption Program And Its Effect On The Indian Slaves, Robert M. Muhlestein Jan 1991

Utah Indians And The Indian Slave Trade: The Mormon Adoption Program And Its Effect On The Indian Slaves, Robert M. Muhlestein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of the Mormon adoption program developed by the Mormons in response to the Indian slave trade in Utah, 1850-1880. It focuses on the Mormon justifications, as enumerated by Brigham Young, for the adoption policy and it links those justifications to expected results. Further this thesis compares the Mormon's expected results with the actual results of the adoption program through an analysis of historical accounts and Mormon ordinance records.

Home Range And Activity Patterns Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbits, Graham W. Smith Oct 1990

Home Range And Activity Patterns Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbits, Graham W. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Home range use and activity patterns of black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) in northern Utah were studied using telemetry. Home range sizes ranged from < 1 km2 to 3 km2 and did not differ between sexes or among seasons. Jackrabbits were inactive during daylight, became active at dusk, and remained active throughout the night. Animals often traversed their home ranges in a few hours. During the breeding season, males were more active than females. Jackrabbits were most active during well-lit nights, and high winds decreased jackrabbit activity.
