Late Quaternary Arthropods From The Colorado Plateau, Arizona And Utah, Scott A. Elias, Jim I. Mead, Larry D. Agenbroad May 1992

Late Quaternary Arthropods From The Colorado Plateau, Arizona And Utah, Scott A. Elias, Jim I. Mead, Larry D. Agenbroad

Great Basin Naturalist

Late Quaternary-age arthropods were recovered from dry cave deposits and packrat middens located in the Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, and Glen Canyon region of the Colorado Plateau. This Quaternary data resource has not been analyzed before from the Colorado Plateau national parks. Radiocarbon dates on the various deposits containing arthropods range from 1510 to 30,660 yr B.P. The fossil assemblages yielded 57 identified taxa of insects, arachnids, and millipedes, including 15 taxa taken to the species level. The information from the fossil insect record of the Colorado Plateau is not yet sufficiently detailed to permit precise paleoenvironmental reconstructions. However, preliminary conclusions …

Dna Extraction From Preserved Trout Tissues, D. K. Shiozawa, J. Kudo, R. P. Evans, S. R. Woodward, R. N. Williams

Great Basin Naturalist

We have adapted techniques developed for the extraction of DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-imbedded human tissues for use on preserved fish tissues. DNA was successfully extracted and the d-loop region of mitochondrial DNA was amplified with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sequences of the amplified DNA from preserved and modern samples were identical. These techniques were also applied to fin tissue treated with a variety of preservatives. Extraction of DNA from ethyl alcohol and air-dried fin tissues gave yields equivalent to those from frozen tissues. Extraction of DNA from preserved museum specimens of rare or extinct taxa could significantly increase …

Proposed Agenda For A Spiritual Strategy In Personality And Psychotherapy, Allen E. Bergin, I. Reed Payne Apr 1992

Proposed Agenda For A Spiritual Strategy In Personality And Psychotherapy, Allen E. Bergin, I. Reed Payne

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This essay argues that spiritual approaches in personality and psychotherapy are currently not coherent and that a rational strategy is not being pursued to develop an authentic spiritual orientation that can take its place alongside the other major orientations to personality and psychotherapy. It is suggested that a systematic spiritual approach needs to be developed that contributes uniquely to (a) a conception of human nature, (b) a moral frame of reference, and (c) specific techniques of change. In addition, a spiritual approach, if it is to be a viable option in the mental health field needs to be (d) empirical, …

Switzerland's Dialogue With The New Europe, H. Dwight Page Feb 1992

Switzerland's Dialogue With The New Europe, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the midst of the extraordinary current political, economic and cultural changes transforming Europe, few nations find themselves in a greater dilemma than Great Britain and Switzerland. While they must participate to a degree in the process of European economic unification, both Britain and Switzerland risk in so doing jeopardizing their political and cultural identities to a greater extent than any other countries in Europe. No other European culture reveres political independence and sovereignty as much as these two. In addition, whereas the other nation states of Europe have been involved in larger supranational European empires until recent times, Britain …
