The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
Quidditas
The Black Death of 1348 has fascinated readers and scholars for centuries. In this century it has been the subject of innumerable debates. Historians have argued back and forth about the demographic effects of the plague, about whether or not it instigated a period of economic depression, or even whether it represented a major event in history. Similarly, disagreement has raged, both inside and outside of the historical discipline, about the medical history and epidemiology of the plague. Fewer studies, however, have focused on the more immediate effects of the plague in localized areas. These scholars have attempted to uncover …
Nursing And Health Care Among Mormon Women: An Analysis Of The Relief Society Magazine, 1914-1930, Sarah Walker Barney
Nursing And Health Care Among Mormon Women: An Analysis Of The Relief Society Magazine, 1914-1930, Sarah Walker Barney
Theses and Dissertations
This descriptive study examined the nursing and health care activities of Mormon women in the pre-depression period of 1914 through 1930 through analysis of the official voice of the Relief Society, the Relief Society Magazine. Entries from the Relief Society Magazine that dealt with any nursing or health care topic were coded according to the themes they addressed. Five themes emerged: Nursing, faith, healing, women's health, children's health, and public health.
In each of the themes, the Relief Society Magazine showed that the members of the Relief Society recognized the health care problems of their communities and claimed responsibility …
Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth
Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the compulsory smallpox vaccination controversy in Utah, 1899-1901. It looks at the two smallpox epidemics during 1899-1901 and follows the boards of health attempts to eradicate smallpox primarily by compelling the vaccination of school children.
Dr. Theodore B. Beatty, secretary of the State Board of Health, championed the effort to vaccinate all Utahns; however, the opposition led by Charles W. Penrose, editor of the Deseret Evening News, produced anti-compulsion and vaccination information which influenced Utahns to generally oppose vaccination. Consequently, the legislature passed an anti-compulsory vaccination statute over the governor's veto to annul the courts decision …

German Refuse Disposal: Sharing The Waste Worldwide, Robert Mckay
German Refuse Disposal: Sharing The Waste Worldwide, Robert Mckay
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The German garbage industry is becoming more lucrative and illegal. With the new "green dot" program recycling program and sizable tolls for using state owned dumps, many firms are using other alternatives to dispose of their waste. Sadly, some companies are turning to black market garbage brokers that ship the sometimes toxic, but always harmful waste out of the country. From Venezuela to Singapore (Der Spiegel 1992, 48), everything from old carcinogenic chemical pesticides to traces of German yoghurt containers have been found laying around the country side in small village dumps. Since 1988 the German government has been investigating …

Employment And Happiness Among Mormon And Non-Mormon Mothers In Utah, Kimberly Grace Andersen
Employment And Happiness Among Mormon And Non-Mormon Mothers In Utah, Kimberly Grace Andersen
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of maternal employment status on the happiness and/or unhappiness of married Utah women with children were studied. The independent variables were employment status, age, and denomination. Covariates were health, husbands income, and number of children. Denominational differences were not found to impact happiness, but age and employment status were related to happiness, with non-employed and younger mothers being happier.

Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Theses and Dissertations
This project attempts to demonstrate the value of literary approaches to the Doctrine and Covenants, using a predominantly formalistic approach. To establish a foundation, the first chapter discusses the rich literary content of the Doctrine and Covenants, providing examples of the various literary genres represented in it, such as narrative, saga, parable, and poetry. The second chapter presents portions of Section 76 that contain features characteristic of Hebrew poetry, such as figures of speech and parallelism. The third chapter analyzes ways in which Section 76's poetic dimensions are illuminated by "The Vision," a 312-line poem attributed to Joseph Smith. The …

Terrestrial Vertebrates Of The Mono Lake Islands, California, Michael L. Morrison, William M. Block, Joseph R. Jehl Jr., Linnea S. Hall
Great Basin Naturalist
We compared vertebrate populations between the two major islands (Paoha and Negit) in Mono Lake, California, and the adjacent mainland to further elucidate the mechanisms underlying island colonization. Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and montane voles (Microtus montanus) were captured on Paoha, but only deer mice were captured on Negit. In contrast, eight species of rodents were captured on the mainland. Overall rodent abundance on Paoha and the mainland was similar, but on Negit it was about three times greater than on Paoha or the mainland. Adult deer mice from Paoha were significantly (P < .05) smaller in most external body characteristics than mainland mice. Coyotes (Canis latrans …

Lakeward And Downstream Movements Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling (Thymallus Arcticus) Originating Between A Lake And A Waterfall, Mark A. Deleray, Calvin M. Kaya
Great Basin Naturalist
Arctic grayling in Deer Lake, Montana spawn only in the 350-m segment of outlet stream between the lake and a waterfall. The purpose of this study was to examine consequences of and possible adaptations by this population to spawning above the falls, by determining the extent of loss over the falls of age-0 young, the daily and seasonal patterns of such losses, and the seasonal pattern of movement upstream into the lake by the remaining young. We measured fish movements during 1989 and 1990 with traps placed at the outlet and at the falls, from fry swimup in July until …

A Qualitative View Of The Educational Experiences Of Black African Students At Brigham Young University, Khumbulani Desmond Mdletshe
A Qualitative View Of The Educational Experiences Of Black African Students At Brigham Young University, Khumbulani Desmond Mdletshe
Student Works
Black African students first began enrolling at Brigham Young University (BYU) in the mid 1960's. Most were from Nigeria and Ghana, having been sent by their governments to receive a higher education. In the late 1970's, students from other Black African countries began enrolling at BYU. But in the 1980's, government support was not as strong. As one former BYU graduate student from Nigeria put it: "When I first came here in 1980 there were at least 30 Nigerian students. There were so many of them because the government was sponsoring them. Now the numbers have decreased because the government …

While the history books refer to hemophilia as the disease of kings because it was once common among European royalty, the disorder now makes headlines for a completely different reason. It is estimated that at least 70% of the hemophiliacs whoo received blood products between 1978 and 1985 have been infected with HIV.

Biochemical Differentiation In The Idaho Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Brunneus (Rodenta: Scuridae), Ayesha E. Gill, Eric Yensen
Biochemical Differentiation In The Idaho Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Brunneus (Rodenta: Scuridae), Ayesha E. Gill, Eric Yensen
Great Basin Naturalist
Spermophilus brunneus is restricted to a 90 × 125-km area of west central Idaho, with two distinct (northern and southern) groups of populations within this limited range. Morphological differences in pelage length and coloration, external and cranial measurements, and bacula suggest that these groups are either very distinct subspecies or species. We used starch-gel electrophoresis to estimate the amount of genetic differentiation accompanying these morphological differences by assaying genetic variation at 31 loci in the two geographic groups. Fifteen loci were polymorphic (13 in the northern group, 12 in the southern), and mean heterozygosity (H¯) was high (12.3% northern and …

Red Butte Canyon Research Natural Area: History, Flora, Geology, Climate, And Ecology, James R. Ehleringer, Lois A. Arnow, Ted Arnow, Irving B. Mcnulty, Norman C. Negus
Great Basin Naturalist
Red Butte Canyon is a protected, near pristine canyon entering Salt Lake Valley, Utah. It contains a well-developed riparian zone and a perennial stream; hillside vegetation ranges from grasslands on the lower limits to Douglas-fir and aspen stands at the upper elevations. In this paper we describe the history of human impact, natural history aspects of climate, geology, and ecology, and faunal and floral information for key species in the canyon. The role and importance of Research Natural Areas is discussed, particularly with respect to the need to protect Red Butte Canyon—one of the few remaining undisturbed riparian ecosystems in …
Economic Insights From The Book Of Mormon, Lindon J. Robison
Economic Insights From The Book Of Mormon, Lindon J. Robison
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Economic systems are distinguished by their emphasis on equity and efficiency. Market controls are justified because of the need for equity. Free markets are justified because of the need for private incentives and efficiency. Most countries of the world today have adopted a combination of controls and free-market incentives. The Book of Mormon teaches that only through caring can equity and efficiency be simultaneously achieved.
