A Conceptual Approach To Multiple-Model Integration In Whole Site Risk Assessments, E. P. Albers, K. R. Dixon Jul 2002

A Conceptual Approach To Multiple-Model Integration In Whole Site Risk Assessments, E. P. Albers, K. R. Dixon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the past, models have focused on one environmental compartment, a single organism, or specific process. All of these topics are limited in scope and often fail to take into account the more complex interactions of the real world. We have endeavored to change this practice by combining environmental transport models with an animal movement model and a physiologically based toxicokinetics (PBTK) model that has an embedded effects model. The example we will depict consists of a hypothetical contaminant plume within a lake and the impacts on the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). We compared the PBTK output for the multiple-model …

A Neural Emission-Receptor Model For Ozone Reduction Planning, S. Barazzetta, G. Corani, Giorgio Guariso Jul 2002

A Neural Emission-Receptor Model For Ozone Reduction Planning, S. Barazzetta, G. Corani, Giorgio Guariso

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Ground level ozone pollution is a complex phenomenon heavily affecting industrialized and populated areas. Ozone is produced by a series of photochemical reactions, activated by the emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds and may reach maximum concentrations at kilometers of distance form the precursors sources, depending on the meteorological conditions. Models to compute ozone concentrations are equally complex and cannot be directly used to optimize emission reduction policies. For this reason, a neural network has been trained on the results of a photochemical model (CALGRID) to represent the emission-receptor relationships in critical conditions. Such a network in then …

A Bayesian Network For Investigating The Decline In Fish Catch In Switzerland, M. E. Borsuk, Patricia Burkhardt-Holm, Peter Reichert Jul 2002

A Bayesian Network For Investigating The Decline In Fish Catch In Switzerland, M. E. Borsuk, Patricia Burkhardt-Holm, Peter Reichert

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Catches of brown trout have decreased about 50% in many rivers and streams in Switzerland in the past 15 years. Additionally, the health status of numerous brown trout populations has been assessed to be impaired. In order to evaluate the causes for these phenomena, a nationwide interdisciplinary project named “Fischnetz” was launched in 1999. Twelve hypotheses for the fish population declines were proposed and laboratory and field research projects were initiated to investigate these suggested causes. To apply the results of these investigations to the task of discerning the relative causal importance of each of the hypotheses, a Bayesian probability …

A Metadata-Based System For Urban Transportation Data Provision And Analysis, Vivian Salim, Gerardo Trinidad, Nariida Smith, Leorey Marquez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Cities are presently faced with increasing pressure from population and activities leading tocongestion, pollution and degradation of the living environment. In order to assist decision-makers to assessthe changing state of important amenities in a city such as clean air, energy and transport, a metadata-basedsystem for automated data assembly along with a Web-based suite of applications is proposed. This wouldform the basis for identifying the most effective technology and practice requirements in line with changingneeds. Metadata can be defined as structured data, such as access and content details, about data sets.Metadata sets were designed to allow a more efficient use of …

Use Of Genetic Algorithms To Select Input Variables In Artificial Neural Network Models For The Prediction Of Benthic Macroinvertebrates, T. D’Heygere, Peter L. M. Goethals, N. De Pauw Jul 2002

Use Of Genetic Algorithms To Select Input Variables In Artificial Neural Network Models For The Prediction Of Benthic Macroinvertebrates, T. D’Heygere, Peter L. M. Goethals, N. De Pauw

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The first consideration in predictive ecological modelling is the selection of appropriate input variables. Numerous variables can however be involved and most of them cannot be omitted without a significant loss of information. The collection of field data on the other hand is both time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, rigorous methods are needed to detect which variables are essential and those which are not. Appropriate selection of input variables is not only important for modelling objectives as such, but also to ensure reliable decision-support in river management and policy-making. In this paper, the use of genetic algorithms is explored to automatically …

A Model For Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisationq, T. H. F. Wong, D. Fletcher, H. P. Duncan, J. R. Coleman, G. A. Jenkins Jul 2002

A Model For Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisationq, T. H. F. Wong, D. Fletcher, H. P. Duncan, J. R. Coleman, G. A. Jenkins

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Catchment urbanisation leads to increased hydraulic and pollutant loadings into receiving waterbodies. Issues concerning pollution that endangers the sustainable utilisation of water resources have focused government authorities towards integrated catchment management, where both causes and effects of pollution are addressed. Recent research has provided a platform for improving urban stormwater management. The CRC for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) has recently developed a Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSIC), which serves as a decision support system (DSS) that packages the results of many research activities undertaken at the CRCCH and other organisations into an easily used tool. MUSIC enables urban catchment …

A Young Girl With Missile Trauma Near The Eye, Renea L. Beckstrand, Ellen K. Sanders Jun 2002

A Young Girl With Missile Trauma Near The Eye, Renea L. Beckstrand, Ellen K. Sanders

Faculty Publications

A 15-year-old girl who came to the emergency department holding tissue to her right eye said that she had been shot. She had right eye pain and swelling below the eye, and she was bleeding. As the girl was getting off a school bus, a male occupant in a car that was driving past reached out of the passenger side window and shot multiple pellets at the school bus with a pellet gun. The shooter was unknown to the girl; the shooting seemed to be random. When the girl was shot she felt pain immediately in the area between her …

Flood Flows And Population Dynamics Of Arizona Sycamore (Platanus Wrightii), Juliet C. Stromberg May 2002

Flood Flows And Population Dynamics Of Arizona Sycamore (Platanus Wrightii), Juliet C. Stromberg

Western North American Naturalist

Platanus wrightii is a pioneer tree species of warm-temperate riparian deciduous forests in southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Dendrochronological analysis of populations in central and southern Arizona indicated that P. wrightii seedlings establish episodically. Long intervals (10–40 years) elapsed with no apparent establishment. Seedling establishment years were positively associated with winter flood size and annual flow rate, and weakly negatively associated with summer flood size. Large floods sometimes preceded multi-year establishment waves. During the past 2 decades an abundance of winter floods and very wet springs has allowed frequent establishment of P. wrightii. For example, plants established at many …

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone May 2002

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone

Faculty Publications

A common observation in the research literature is that children of drug-dependent parents are at significantly heightened risk of adolescent drug use, abuse, and dependence. Recent research indicates that several psychological and interpersonal factors may affect the association between parents’ psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) and drug use risks among adolescents, yet studies have failed to examine explicitly whether these factors moderate the association between PSUD and adolescent substance abuse. This paper explores these potential relationships using longitudinal data from a study that has followed three cohorts of adolescents and their families over a 7-year period. The cohorts are defined …

Taku Parai: Well, we've come to the part of the program where I guess a lot of questions and answers are going to be shared between us all, but I think we should start of on the right note, and that is that we'll have an opening song, which we'll ask Aunty Cissy to conduct. And we'll ask Hrother Pierce to give the opening invocation to this part of the program.

Mormonism And The Maori: A Look At Beginnings Apr 2002

Mormonism And The Maori: A Look At Beginnings

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a sustained mission to the New Zealand Maori beginning in the 1880s. Within a few short years thousands had been baptized. By the turn of the century, the church counted nearly a tenth of the total Maori population as members, with a significantly higher percentage in certain pas (settlements) along the east coast of the North Island from the southern Wairarapa to Poverty Bay and beyond.1 The reason Mormonism was so well accepted among a significant minority of Maori in the final decades of the nineteenth century and why it continues …

Lds Counselor Ratings Of Problems Occurring Among Lds Premarital And Remarital Couples, Travis R. Adams, Robert F. Stahmann

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

A fundamental purpose of this study was to furnish marriage preparation prviders (counselors, educators, and ecclesiastical leaders) with information about specific problem areas that might be encountered in LDS first marriages and remarriages. A structured questionnaire was sent to a national sample of LDS counselors, defined as members of the Association of Mormon Counselors & Psychotherapists (AMCAP). These LDS counslors rated 29 problem areas that couples might encounter in a first marriage or remarriage. Results were analyzed in an attempt to determine the most frequently occuring, most damaging, and most difficult problems to deal with in LDS first marriages and …

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley Apr 2002

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Therapy in the 21st century cannot be guided soley by attention to intra-psychic or intra-familial factors. As the surrounding social and cultural environment continues to become more unstable, threatening, and dangerous, fear and depression become increasingly common, reality-based responses. These reponses are not a surprise to those acquainted with ancient and modern scriptures, which predict times of unprecedented trouble with accompanying widespread terror and despair; and which also identifies an alternative, more healthful response to the context of our current social enviroment. Finally, it articulates what AMCAP and its individual members can do to ""public peace"" in these times of …

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance Interventions In Ghana And South Africa: A Synthesis Of Major Impacts And Lessons, Sam Afrane Apr 2002

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance Interventions In Ghana And South Africa: A Synthesis Of Major Impacts And Lessons, Sam Afrane

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

International trade liberalization often implies increased potentials for export production. In order to invest in increasing capacity in agriculture, farmers need to have credit access. However, farmers in Central Europe and East Africa, among other places, are credit constrained, due to collateral reasons. A model illustrates the additional producer gains from having access to credit; the gains are composed of a price effect, an investment effect, and a social-capital externality. The model and empirical findings suggest that improvements of agricultural credit can be achieved by relying on existing social structures, such as farmers' social capital. The paper concludes that such …

Microenterprise Development In The United States: Closing The Gap, William Burrus

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

A challenge to United States microenterprise development is scale. After years of experience and learning, most programs still serve relatively few clients on an annual basis. Given the barriers to increasing scale and sustainability, we need strategies to achieve growth. This paper identifies strategies for growth in the field and identifies three areas of focus that are essential to increased scale and sustainability.
