Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata Apr 2002

Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata

BYU Studies

With increased interest in family history research, there is a great need for improvement in procedures for generating genealogical information. One of the most time-consuming parts of the work is searching through records (such as civil records, church records, census records, immigration records, wills, deeds, and certificates, of births, marriages, and deaths) for information about an individual. When multiple records are searched, an individual may appear numerous times. Each of these occurrences may contain identical or unique information about the individual. More complete information (such as pedigree) can be constructed for an individual by combining or linking all the records …

The Paradoxical Nature Of Sin: Explorations On The Nature And Uses Of Falling Short In Life, John M. Rector Apr 2002

The Paradoxical Nature Of Sin: Explorations On The Nature And Uses Of Falling Short In Life, John M. Rector

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Sin is an inevitable reality of mortal experience and respresents a paradox: although sin should always be shunned, it nonetheless plays a necessary part in our spiritual growth and progress. This paper explores the nature of paradox, the relationship between good and evil, and the ways in which the reality of sin can ultimately be used for human learning, development, and evolution. Innocence and purity are virtues, but the humility and suffering which accompany sin can open the way, through the atonement of Christ, to far greater virtues: compassion, charity, tolerance, and understanding.

Three Naturally Occurring Penstemon Hybrids, Paul Wilson, Michael Valenzuela Feb 2002

Three Naturally Occurring Penstemon Hybrids, Paul Wilson, Michael Valenzuela

Western North American Naturalist

Three wild Penstemon hybrids are documented herein: Penstemon clevelandii × spectabilis, P. centranthifolius × spectabilis, and P. centranthifolius × eatonii. Each putative hybrid was compared to its respective parental species using manifold floral and vegetative characters for which the parents differed. For each hybrid hypothesis, characters were counted as being intermediate or not intermediate. There were significantly more intermediate characters in all 3 cases (one-sided sign tests, P < 0.05). These Penstemon species evidently do hybridize naturally, and for nearly all characters the hybrids are consistent with the view that the parents differ largely by additive genetic effects.

Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy Feb 2002

Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The writer Jean Cocteau once descriped the fiction that he produced as "des mensonges vrais." If we agree that his description is apt, that indeed all fiction consists of true lies, then historical fiction might be considered a special genre , since it tries to blend true lies with genuine truths. Attempting to present simultaneously both the historical truth and a fictional narrative that brings that truth to life is a less straightforward task than it might seem, because the novelist and the historian must write at cross-purposes: the former is concerned with the story of individual lives, the latter …

Spatial Correlation Between Radon (222rn) In Groundwater And Bedrock Uranium (238u): Gis And Geostatistical Analyses

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

This study describes approaches to create surface maps of radon in groundwater based on measurements of radon (222Rn) in drilled bedrock wells at unevenly distributed sites and uranium bedrock maps from the South East of Sweden, the Östergotland county (N 58°14’ – N 58°56’ and E 14°53’ – E 16°06’), see figure 1. Geostatistical techniques of inverse distance weighted (IDW), kriging and cokriging were compared in terms of their interpolation power and correlation between the produced radon in the water layer and the bedrock uranium layer. The goal of these analyses and calculations is to improve our understanding …

Determination Of The Protein Fraction And Presence Of Antibodies In The Seminal Fluid Of Llama (Lama Glama), Francisco Flores Lopes Jan 2002

Determination Of The Protein Fraction And Presence Of Antibodies In The Seminal Fluid Of Llama (Lama Glama), Francisco Flores Lopes

Theses and Dissertations

At an international level, Bolivia possesses the largest population of llamas followed by Peru. This makes our country a power, in this renewable resource, to create and generate economic development primarily for the quality of llama meat which has nutritional properties superior to other species of animals used for food. The development of the investigation of llamas in our country has not been very far-reaching. In other countries, advances have been made for quite some time, specifically in the area of reproduction, which presents problems in bringing about an intensive repopulation due to the unique characteristics of llama copulation and …

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson Jan 2002

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson

BYU Studies

Women composed a significant portion of the early converts who would follow Joseph Smith over hundreds of miles and through the fires of persecution. Lucy Mack Smith, Rebecca Williams, Phebe Peck, and Melissa Dodge represent well the dedication and testimony of such early Latter-day Saint women. Despite separation from loved ones and the dangers and difficulties they would face as Church members, religion was the guiding factor in their lives. These women testified of the value of their experiences and exhorted others to "give up all and follow your Lord" regardless of the trials that were required of them.

Interpreting Early Modern Woman Abuse: The Case Of Anne Dormer, Mary O'Connor Jan 2002

Interpreting Early Modern Woman Abuse: The Case Of Anne Dormer, Mary O'Connor

Quidditas

[T]hese hard laws I live under must keepe us from seeing one another.

Anne Dormer

When Anne Dormer, of Rousham, Oxfordshire, wrote to her sister, Elizabeth Trumbull, in August 1686, she complained that she would not be able to greet her on her return from a tumultuous year in France. Elizabeth (sometimes called Katherine) was married to the special envoy William Trumbull and had just endured the events of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Anne’s husband, Robert Dormer, had certain “laws” under which his wife had to live, one of which prohibited her from going to London to …

A Biographical Study Of Elizabeth D. Kane, Darcee D. Barnes Jan 2002

A Biographical Study Of Elizabeth D. Kane, Darcee D. Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

This is a biographical study of Elizabeth D. Kane (1836-1909), travel writer and wife of Thomas L. Kane, non-Mormon friend of the nineteenth-century Mormons of Utah. Primary source materials are mainly Elizabeth's fourteen diaries (spanning the years 1853 to 1909), letters and narrative accounts. Elizabeth was greatly influenced by Thomas, while maintaining her independence. She was interested in religion and feminist issues, and those interests, combined with her marital relationship, shaped her life's direction. Thomas Kane's interest in the Mormons also influenced Elizabeth's religious and feminist views, and she initially struggled with accepting Thomas's work for them because of their …

Vibrato Rate Adjustment, Christopher Dromey, Neisha Carter, Arden Hopkin Jan 2002

Vibrato Rate Adjustment, Christopher Dromey, Neisha Carter, Arden Hopkin

Faculty Publications

Summary: The goal of the present study was to document the acoustic changes that occur as singers attempt to increase or decrease their vibrato rate to match target stimuli. Eight advanced singing students produced vowels with vibrato in three registers, both naturally and while attempting to match faster or slower rate stimuli. Slower rates were associated with lower intensity and less steady vibrato. Faster rates involved increased vibrato extent in the chest register and increased intensity in the head register. Singers whose spontaneous vibrato rates were naturally either slower or faster tended to also be relatively slower or faster when …

Turbulent Times: Epic Fantasy In Adolescent Literature, Karie Eliza Crawford Jan 2002

Turbulent Times: Epic Fantasy In Adolescent Literature, Karie Eliza Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a development of the theories presented by Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Bruno Bettelheim concerning archetypes, the anima/animus concept, the Hero Cycle, and identity development through fairy tales. I argue that there are vital rites of passage missing in Anglo-Saxon culture, and while bibliotherapy cannot replace them, it can help adolescents synthesize their experiences. The theories of Jung, Campbell, and Bettelheim demonstrate this concept by defining segments of the story and how they apply to the reader. Because of the applicability, readers, despite their age, can use the examples in the book to help reconcile their own …

A Spatio-Temporal Data Model For Zoning, Philip J. Uhl Jan 2002

A Spatio-Temporal Data Model For Zoning, Philip J. Uhl

Theses and Dissertations

Planning departments are besieged with temporal/historical information. While for many institutions historical information can be relegated to archives, planning departments have a constant need to access and query their historical information, particularly their historical spatial information such as zoning. This can be a cumbersome process fraught with inaccuracies due to the changing organizational methods and the extended historical legacies of most municipalities. Geographic Information Systems can be a tool to provide a solution to the difficulties in querying spatio-temporal planning data. Using a data model designed specifically to facilitate the querying of historical zoning information, queries can be performed to …

Determination Of Protein Profile And Presence Of Antibodies In Llama Seminal Plasma (Llama Glama), Francisco Flores Lópes

Theses and Dissertations

Internationally, Bolivia has the largest llama population followed by Peru. This makes our country a power in this renewable resource for working and generating economic development. This is mainly because of the quality of llama meat, which has nutritional properties superior to other animal species. The development and research in our country of llamas is not very significant. But in other countries advanced studies have been done for years, specifically in the area of reproduction, which represents problems for intensive repopulation because of singular characteristics of semen and copulation. The present research work was done at the UAC in Tiahuanacu …

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins Jan 2002

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes that human beings by virtue of living in each new present moment are motivated to develop strategies to secure the best possible outcome in their lived experience. A personal account of the phenomenological experience of time is presented and a brief history is given. The implications associated with being thrown into the present moment make apparent the weaknesses of the current assumptions that the slices of the present moment form a continuity of past and future and create a coherent synthesis of life. The assumption that human beings are intentional, goal-directed, and prone to seek meaning in …

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch Jan 2002

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of work-family fit has recently emerged in the work and family literature, comparable to work-family balance in that it represents interactions between work and family, and yet distinct from balance in its sense of universal ownership and responsibility. Using Barnett's (1998) model of the work-social system interface as a framework, this study explores the relationship between and predictive factors of work-family fit and work-family balance. Data are from a survey of Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management (MSM) graduate school alumni (n = 273). Findings indicate that fit and balance are indeed two separate constructs, with fit …
