A Microsimulation Model For Assessing Urine Flows In Urban Wastewater Management, Irene Peters, Kai-H Brassel, Christian Sporria
A Microsimulation Model For Assessing Urine Flows In Urban Wastewater Management, Irene Peters, Kai-H Brassel, Christian Sporria
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We report on a microsimulation model under development whose purpose it is to construct scenarios for the assessment of a novel wastewater management technology: the separate collection, transport, and handling of human urine. Levelling the urine flow to the treatment plant or removing it from conventional treatment altogether has many benefits for wastewater management. For an effective technology implementation, it is useful to know the spatial and temporal distribution of urine generation. This can be achieved with microsimulation modelling which depicts the objects under study on a one-to-one basis and thus allows capturing the co-variation of different variables across these …

Application Of A Checklist For Quality Assistance In Environmental Modelling To An Energy Model, James Risbey, Jeroen Van Der Sluijs, Penny Kloprogge, Jerry Ravetz, Silvio Funtowicz, S.C. Quintana
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Large, complex energy models present considerable challenges to develop and test. Uncertainty assessments of such models provide only partial guidance on the quality of the results. We have developed a model quality assistance checklist to aid in this purpose. The checklist is applied to an energy model for the problem of assessing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Use of the checklist suggests that results on this issue are contingent on a number of assumptions that are highly value-laden. When these assumptions are held fixed, the model is deemed capable of producing moderately robust results of relevance to climate policy …

Within the framework of the Regional Air Quality Plan (PRQA) of the Lombardy Region (Italy) adatabase named INEMAR (AiR EMission INventory) was developed for the estimation and management ofthe atmospheric emissions. The INEMAR system considers emissions of different sources (point, area, biogenic, road transport), andorganizes all information needed for their estimation: activity indicators, emission factors, other statisticaldata necessary on spatial and temporal distribution of emissions. As the first Italian experience of an emission inventory source code made by a regional authority, INEMARis a multi-user database that contains all the data for the emission estimates, the procedures that carry out thealgorithms utilized for …
Modelling And Short Term Forecasting Of Photochemical Pollution By Soft Computing Techniques, G. Finzi, Giuseppe Nunnari, M. Volta
Modelling And Short Term Forecasting Of Photochemical Pollution By Soft Computing Techniques, G. Finzi, Giuseppe Nunnari, M. Volta
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper, two different approaches, namely of neuro-fuzzy and fuzzy types, are considered for modelling photochemical pollution in two different areas. One of the main aims of the considered approaches is the possibility to extract knowledge from historical time-series thus allowing a deeper understanding of the physical phenomena involved. The city of Brescia is located in the Po Valley in Northern Italy and is characterised by high industrial, urban and traffic emissions and continental climate. The Siracusa industrial area is located in the eastern coast of Sicily, with a climate typical of Southern Mediterranean areas.

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
More than 250 submerged archaeological sites were identified in the Lagoon of Venice, which account for an historic and artistic heritage of extraordinary value. These sites are endangered by several environmental and human factors: erosion, chemical pollution, organisms (mainly wood borers), motor-boat traffic, fishery activities, and robbers. A Decision Support System (DSS), named ArcheoRisk, was developed to include the safeguarding of archaeological sites within the environmental management of the Venice lagoon and to select most effective safeguarding/rehabilitation interventions, whenever needed. The DSS relies on a Geographical Information System platform (Arcview) and is composed of two modules: (1) assessment of archaeological …

Model Coupling And Integration Via Xml In Them3 Simulation, Andreas Hoheisel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Complex real-world systems are currently developing into a decisive instrument for IT-supported problem solving for a great number of problems posed by science, economy and society. Like in many environmental simulation systems the Man Model Measurement (M3) Simulation (http://mmm.first.fraunhofer.de) contains numerous single scientifically founded models coupled to each other to reflect the complexity of our world. The unpredictable human factor is considered by actively involving real people into the simulation by a Virtual Reality framework. The evolution and enhancement of the M3 system will be provided by an open software API. This paper will focus on the control and the …
Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti
Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models are invaluable tools for resource management. Models help resource managers develop a shared conceptual understanding of complex natural systems, allow testing of management scenarios, predict outcomes of high risk and high cost environmental manipulations, and set priorities. Catchment modelling is a specialist field, and different modelling approaches are specialist areas in themselves. There are a plethora of models available that apply to integrated catchment management, from micro to landscape scales, from deterministic models to broad-brush models. Different philosophies abound; with some experts advocating top-down systems approaches and others who dismiss these as being too uncertain and based on opinion …
Integrated Modelling For Nutrient Loading Of Polder Lakes, P.J.T.M. Van Puijenbroek, J. M. Knoop
Integrated Modelling For Nutrient Loading Of Polder Lakes, P.J.T.M. Van Puijenbroek, J. M. Knoop
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Many shallow lakes in the lower parts of the Netherlands are hypertrophic and dominated by algae blooms. The present ecological situation reflects the result of past and the present nutrient loading − a combination of point and diffuse loading from different sources. The difference in catchment and hydrology between lakes leads to a difference in nutrient loading and water residence time. Management options to reduce the trophic state have to be analysed. A model is presented that calculates the load of nutrients for 35 polder lakes in the Netherlands separated for different years and emission routes. Detailed hydrological information on …

Landholders, departmental agencies and other stakeholders have long been involved in knowledge building of the physical elements affecting land use. Often, however, this has been without any accompanying information on social and economic impacts, or systems for exploring catchment trade-off decisions. RIMIS is the concept of a regional management system designed for landscape managers. It has a web-compatible interface allowing multiple users to access distributed data sources (including spatial databases) and run distributed bio-physical and socio-economic models to explore catchment management problems i.e. ask ‘what if?’ questions. Its models bring together science, sociology and economics, to explore interactions and show …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The rehabilitation of contaminated sites is a complex process encompassing technological, environmental, socio-economic aspects. These aspects show close spatial and temporal inter-relations. Moreover, mega-sites (hundreds of hectares wide) require properly designed Decision Support Systems (DSS). In this work, a DEcision Support sYstem for the REqualification of contaminated sites (DESYRE) is proposed for the identification of the most effective rehabilitation interventions. The DSS is based on a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework and integrates environmental and technological databases, risk assessment models, and multi criteria procedures. It is composed of five modules: (1) characterisation, (2) risk, (3) socio-economical and (4) technological analysis, …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
It is expected that the structure of rural communities and the visual landscape of the Cudgewa Valley in northeastern Victoria, Australia, will change markedly within the next 20 years. We are creating a portable environment for landscape simulation, using geographic information systems and virtual reality technology. This will allow the community and stakeholders of this valley to propose alternative land cover configurations, move through realistic renderings of the consequent landscape, and review outcomes on a variety of environmental, economic and social scales. A detailed three dimensional visual model of the region will be rendered using OpenGL Performer. People will also …

Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (Ccs M) Integrated Remote Real-Time Supervision For An Old Coking-P Lant, Frédéric Portet, Konrad Szafnicki, Jacques Bourgois, Véronique Milon
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The purpose of the Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (CCSM) is to develop a real time management methodology for PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) contaminated aquifer resulting from coal activity. For full-scale experimentation, since June 2000 an old coking plant site has been instrumented (sensors, analysers, datalogger, programmable logic controller, etc….). Its follow-up currently continues with remote supervision, via telecom connection. The Contaminated Sites Monitoring is a necessity to control the evolution of pollution and therefore the risk to human health or environment. With aromatic hydrocarbons contamination, one is generally satisfied with selective investigation, in fact incomplete and non-representative of the reality. …
Simulation Of Pesticide Percolation In The Soil Based On Cellular Automata, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi
Simulation Of Pesticide Percolation In The Soil Based On Cellular Automata, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the last decades, the use of pesticides has increased exponentially agricultural production. However,it is a well known fact that excessive use of pesticides can be hazardous both for the environment andhuman health. It is thus essential to assess thoroughly the impact on the environment of a given pesticide beforeits application. When they are sprayed on crops, pesticides are absorbed by the soil. Then, when waterflows through the soil because of rain or floods, chemical substances can be released into it. The amount ofpesticide released into water mainly depends on the chemical properties of the pesticide itself and the physicaland …
A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel
A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
South Africa finds itself at a development cross road: optimism for "high road" development is bisected by a wasteland of poverty and overpopulation. Intervention policies are largely "faith-based", even in the face of rising uncertainties surrounding population growth, HIV/Aids and resource availability. Added to this are the complexities of disparate spatial development and social scenarios, mass urbanization and immigration. In order to confront these threats, decision makers need analytical tools that can be used to explore potential intervention policies for their efficacy, desirability and inadvertent consequences in nontarget sectors. Such tools should adequately address uneven spatial development across environmental, economic …

EGPE is an object-oriented model, which estimates the environmental distribution ofcontaminants within different environmental compartments and the specific risk associated with thesesdistributions and final concentrations. This model evaluates environmental impacts related to: a) the use ofsludge/manure as fertiliser, and b) direct discharges of slurry or effluents from treatment plants to waterstreams. The program takes into account the physico-chemical interaction processes occurring after thedischarge, estimating the downstream evolution of the following parameters: dissolved oxygen, organicnitrogen, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Within the estimations it is also included the environmental risk forthe aquatic communities related to quantified pollutants and the overall toxicity of …

Multi-Criteria Decision Support System And Data Warehouse For Designing And Monitoring Sustainable Industrial Strategies An Italian Case Study, C. Di Mauro, J. P. Nordvik, A. C. Lucia
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Decision-making processes for managing and defining policies related to social and environmental impacts from industry are becoming more and more complex. Raising public concerns on environmental issues requires public authorities to collect more accurate information related to impacts of industry. Overlaps between environmental, social and political interests, and rapid speed of change contribute even further to the complexity. Unfortunately, this multifaceted information is spread throughout multiple repositories. Thus, there is a need to integrate the available information within a structured network and to design a decision support system suitable for helping decision makers to define sustainable policies. This paper reports …
Predicting Ozone Peaks : A Combined Cbr And Cell Mapping Approach, David Pearson, Mireille Batton-Hubert, Gerardo Herrera Garcia
Predicting Ozone Peaks : A Combined Cbr And Cell Mapping Approach, David Pearson, Mireille Batton-Hubert, Gerardo Herrera Garcia
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper we present a new approach for predicting ozone peaks when monitoring atmospheric pollution. Our main idea is that atmospheric pollution is closely monitored and over the past 5 to 10 years we have built up fairly extensive databases concerning it. Thus, rather than looking for a physical model in the first instance, maybe we should look for patterns and repeatability in the historical data. The approach presented is a hybrid one based on case based reasoning and cell mapping. Essentially, we forget all about a model in the first instance and simply search historical data to see …

The Socioeconomic Importance Of Eco-Resort Management Practices, Christine Lim
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In recent years, ecotourism has become an increasingly important alternative form of sustainable tourism. Couran Cove Island Resort, which is located on South Stradbroke Island off the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, is an eco-resort on one of the world's few naturally occurring sand islands. As an ecotourism-based resort, Couran Cove is active in implementing a range of initiatives for sustainable management of its environment, which is particularly important as it is home to a wide variety of plant communities. Consequently, the resort has a niche market of ecotourists. This paper examines how Couran Cove Island Resort applies the principles …

Comparison Between Water Quality Models For Toxics, C. Gualtieri
Comparison Between Water Quality Models For Toxics, C. Gualtieri
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Water quality models have been applied increasingly to represent the interaction between pollutants and aquatic environment due to transport and transformation phenomena: These models can be used to better understand pollution phenomena and to choose between different, alternative management strategies. The paper compares the results of two different water quality models, which have been applied to a water column-sediments system of a lake with an inflow contaminant loading. In the former, the system is idealized as well-mixed surface-water underlain by a well-mixed active sediment layer, where the resulting concentrations are attained by direct analytical solutions at the steady-state and in …

Environmental Damage Assessment Applied To Process Analysis. A Decision Support Alternative, I. Herrera, L. Kulay, Laureano Jiménez, Marta Schuhmacher
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Nowadays the environmental studies are increasingly important in the process analysis and design. These studies not only can be used to quantify the environmental damage, but also, as optimisation criteria together with technical and economical evaluations. In the present study, we develop a methodology based on several techniques (Risk Assessment (RA), Design Support Framework (DSF), and Endpoints Indicators Applying). This methodology which links the main aspects of process analysis and environmental damage assessment, comprehends three main steps: the first one involves the accomplishment of an inventory of raw material and energetic streams, which may be predicted or computed depending on …
Modelling The Effect Of Information Feedback On The Spread Of The Ebola Virus, Bernadette O’Regan, Richard Moles
Modelling The Effect Of Information Feedback On The Spread Of The Ebola Virus, Bernadette O’Regan, Richard Moles
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes the application of the tools and techniques of the system dynamics method to the complex problem of understanding the spread of the Ebola virus. The main deliverable of this research is a computer simulation model in the system dynamics tradition. The essence of system dynamics is to act as a framework for formalising mental models of a problem. In this respect, the system dynamics simulation model presented here is a theory describing the structure of, and interrelationships between, the factors that impact an outbreak of the Ebola virus and the attempts to contain it. The model, comprising …

Environmental Assessment Integrated With Process Simulation For Process Design, I. Herrera, Marta Schuhmacher, Laureano Jiménez, F. Castells
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The decisions within design and renovation of processes have traditionally been based only on technical and economic aspects. The impacts that waste emissions have on the environment have been taken in consideration after setting the basic lines of the project and even after having fixed the layout. A new approach, involving all these issues at the same time, has been developed in order to make better use of natural resources. The aim of this work is to integrate both process design and environmental tools in order to develop a methodology that involves, simultaneously, environmental analysis and process modelling. This methodology …
Multi Criteria Evaluation Of Low Carbon Energy Technologies, S. Mandera, C. Gough
Multi Criteria Evaluation Of Low Carbon Energy Technologies, S. Mandera, C. Gough
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Achieving a low carbon energy supply in a future society driven by the impacts of climate change will require huge technological changes. This paper compares the methodological implications of assessing two very different technological solutions – renewable energy and geological carbon sequestration. The UK has high renewable resources, in particular the highest wind resource in Europe. In contrast, atmospheric emissions from fossil fuels could be avoided by storing carbon dioxide in underground geological formations for which the UK has a huge potential capacity. These two technological approaches will have diverse and wide ranging impacts; both inspire views amongst stakeholders that …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Velfeem –Venice Lagoon Finite Element Ecological Model- To The Macro-Nutrient Input Regime, D. M. Canu, Cosimo Solidoro, Georg Umgiesser
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A sensitivity analysis of VELFEEM, the Finite Element Ecological Model for the lagoon of Venice, has been performed in order to test the responses of the model to changes in external input regimes. The model is obtained by internally coupling a hydrodynamic model, an energetic model, and an ecological model. The hydrodynamics are simulated using SHYFEM, a barotropic bi-dimensional model based on a finite element discretization of the spatial domain, which allows for a very good spatial resolution of the lagoon morphology while keeping at a low level the computational demand. Using a standard heat fluxes formulation, the energetic module …

A significant body of accounting and finance literature has witnessed an increase in the demandfor company’s environmental information over the past few decades. Using data of Australian companiesfrom 1998 to 2000, this study provides an analysis of environmental disclosure in companies’ annual reports. The evidence indicates that companies do respond to the increased demand for environmental disclosure byproviding more environmental-related information in their annual report. Although the requirement todisclose environmental information in annual reports has not kept pace with the legislative reform, there hasbeen a significant increase of these disclosures from 1998 to 2000. We also find that most of the …

M3 Simulation is a simulation approach that actively involves real human actors in a virtual reality environment based on multidisciplinary simulation models. This actor based concept aims at integrated simulation of complex processes belonging to heterogeneous levels of reality, paying specific attention to real human behavior. The entities of the real system under consideration are represented in a consistent object-oriented way by agents simulated by environmental models. This distributed network-capable implementation of the M3 system combines environmental modeling with the intuitive graphic representation, complex communication and interaction structures of virtual worlds in order to support the process of investigation of …
Evaluating Management Strategies In Paraguacu River Basin By Analytic Hierarchy Process, B. Srdjevic, Y. Medeiros, Z. Srdjevic, M. Schaer
Evaluating Management Strategies In Paraguacu River Basin By Analytic Hierarchy Process, B. Srdjevic, Y. Medeiros, Z. Srdjevic, M. Schaer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
An approach is proposed for evaluating water management strategies in river basins. Reasonably large sets of criterions and objectives are manipulated during a three-phase process by appropriate shrinking and enlarging related decision hierarchies. In the first phase an unrestricted set of management interests are grouped into (1) long-term, and (2) middle- and short-term decision context by creating decision hierarchies and evaluating them by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). After refining the hierarchies by deleting dominated elements, management plans are introduced at their fingertips and so enlarged hierarchies are repeatedly evaluated by AHP in the second phase. Only two bottom levels …

Spatial Correlation Analysis Of Nitrogen Dioxide Concentrations In The Area Of Milan, Italy, Grégoire Dubois, M. Saisana, A. Chaloulakou, N. Spyrellis
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Monitoring atmospheric pollution in urban areas frequently involves mapping techniques that assist the researcher and/or the decision-maker to describe and quantify the pollution at locations where no measurements are available. The preparation of these pollution maps is a complex task, which is only feasible if a spatial correlation of the variable of interest is identified. Furthermore, the spatial correlation may not only change in time and space, but also according to the pollution levels. To illustrate this point, this paper investigates the fractal dimension of the spatial correlation of different levels of annual nitrogen dioxide concentrations [NO2] in the greater …
