Temperature Responses And Habitat Sharing In Two Sympatric Species Of Okanagana (Homoptera: Cicadoidea), Allen F. Sanborn, Jessica H. Breitbarth, James E. Heath, Maxine S. Heath Oct 2002

Temperature Responses And Habitat Sharing In Two Sympatric Species Of Okanagana (Homoptera: Cicadoidea), Allen F. Sanborn, Jessica H. Breitbarth, James E. Heath, Maxine S. Heath

Western North American Naturalist

Okanagana striatipes and O. utahensis are species synchronous in location of activity and utilization of host plants. They possess similar acoustic behavior. Analysis of calling songs shows that calls overlap in frequency but differ in temporal pattern. Based on characteristics of the cicada auditory system and the species recognition mechanism, the potential for acoustic interference exists. Both species are ectothermic behavioral thermoregulators. Measurements of thermal preference and body temperature during singing show that although thermal preferences are similar, O. utahensis sings at a significantly higher body temperature. Differences in body temperature required to coordinate singing in the 2 species provide …

A Seed Chalcid (Eurytoma Squamosa Bugbee) Parasitizes Buckbrush (Ceanothus Fendleri Gray) Seeds In A Ponderosa Pine Forest Of Arizona, David W. Huffman Oct 2002

A Seed Chalcid (Eurytoma Squamosa Bugbee) Parasitizes Buckbrush (Ceanothus Fendleri Gray) Seeds In A Ponderosa Pine Forest Of Arizona, David W. Huffman

Western North American Naturalist

Predispersal seed parasitism rates were quantified for buckbrush (Ceanothus fendleri Gray) in 3 Arizona ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) forest units that had been thinned for ecological restoration objectives. The chalcidoid wasp Eurytoma squamosa Bugbee (Eurytomidae) was responsible for 35% of total seed loss in a single year. These findings represent an expansion of the known range and host list for E. squamosa and increase our understanding of factors that may constrain regeneration of C. fendleri in Southwest ponderosa pine forests.

Photographs Of Joseph F. Smith And The Laie Plantation, Hawaii, 1899, Brian William Sokolowsky

BYU Studies

On January 7, 1899, Joseph F. Smith, then a Counselor to Church President Lorenzo Snow, left Salt Lake City to visit the Church's plantation in Laie, Hawaii. The main purpose for this trip to Hawaii was to benefit the health of President Smith's wife Sarah Ellen Richards Smith, who had just passed through a "very severe illness." They were accompanied by two of his daughters, Minerva and Alice. President Smith's "loyal friend and former missionary companion" Albert W. Davis and Edna Davis, Albert Davis's daughter, were also on the trip. They first went by train to San Francisco and on …

The New Microfinance: An Essay On The Self-Help Group Movement In India, Kim Wilson Sep 2002

The New Microfinance: An Essay On The Self-Help Group Movement In India, Kim Wilson

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Indian NGOs have created at least one million self-help groups with 17,000,000 members since the self-help group concept was developed by MYRADA in the late 1980s. India is unique in that banks are permitted to lend directly to unregistered self-help groups and by May 2001, banks and cooperatives had financed 461,478 of these groups, with almost 200,000 new self-help groups financed between May 2000 and May 2001, indicating an accelerated process of expansion. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) trains banks and refinances their loans. The key to NABARD's success is decentralization. Responsibility for group development and …

Integrating Marriage Education Into Perinatal Education, Alan J. Hawkins, Tamara Gilliland, Glenda Christiaens, Jason S. Carroll Sep 2002

Integrating Marriage Education Into Perinatal Education, Alan J. Hawkins, Tamara Gilliland, Glenda Christiaens, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

Couples making the transition to parenthood experience challenges that can threaten the quality and stability of their relationships and the health of family members. Currently, the educational infrastructure to support the delivery of couple-relationship education during the transition to parenthood is limited. Because new-parent couples interact with the health care system at many points during this transition time, an opportunity exists for strengthening couple relationships within the system to improve the well-being of adults and children. in this article, we propose a productive collaboration between marriage/couple educators and health care systems to integrate couple-relationship education into the standard of perinatal …

Investigating The Mechanism Of Acoustically Activated Uptake Of Drugs From Pluronic Micelles, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Christopher M. Runyan, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Background

This paper examines the mechanism of ultrasonic enhanced drug delivery from Pluronic micelles. In previous publications by our group, fluorescently labeled Pluronic was shown to penetrate HL-60 cells with and without the action of ultrasound, while drug uptake was increased with the application of ultrasound.

Methods

In this study, the amount of uptake of two fluorescent probes, Lysosensor Green (a pH-sensitive probe) and Cell Tracker Orange CMTMR (a pH-independent probe), was measured in HL-60 and HeLa cells.

Results

The results of our experiments show that the increase in drug accumulation in the cells as a result of ultrasonication is …

Women In The Book Of Mormon, Camille Williams Jul 2002

Women In The Book Of Mormon, Camille Williams

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Feminist readers, particularly, have argued that biblical writing is sexist because the majority of the text was written by men who seem to place little significance on the role of women. This observation has become a serious concern among some because it calls into question the nature of God: does this supposedly perfect being love men and women equally? This study delves into the text of the Book of Mormon and its female characters to suggest that women were not considered lower than men in Book of Mormon times; likewise, women are not considered lower than men in the Church …

Llyfr Mormon: The Translation Of The Book Of Mormon Into Welsh, Ronald D. Dennis Jul 2002

Llyfr Mormon: The Translation Of The Book Of Mormon Into Welsh, Ronald D. Dennis

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In 1840, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints established its first branch in Wales. The branch had been organized and converts baptized without the help of Welsh translations of the Book of Mormon and other church materials. In this specific area in Wales, English was widely spoken; thus translating the Book of Mormon into Welsh had not been a priority. However, after being sent to a different area of Wales by Elder Lorenzo Snow of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, William Henshaw quickly realized that such a translation was imperative to the spreading of the gospel throughout …

Abundance And Condition Indices Of Coyotes On Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Oregon, Mike R. Dunbar, Mark R. Giordano Jul 2002

Abundance And Condition Indices Of Coyotes On Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Oregon, Mike R. Dunbar, Mark R. Giordano

Western North American Naturalist

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff at Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge (HMNAR), southeastern Oregon, documented high pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) fawn mortality, subsequent low fawn recruitment, and declining pronghorn numbers from 1996 to 1999. Coyote (Canis latrans) predation was the primary cause, accounting for 60–85% of fawn mortalities each year, and fawns were not physiologically predisposed to predation. Therefore, we investigated certain coyote population parameters (age structure, survival, density, physiology) to evaluate how or if these factors influence coyote predation rates on pronghorn fawns. We captured 11 coyotes (5 male and 6 female) in December 1998. …

Modeling The Effects Of Greenbelts At The Urban-Rural Fringe, Daniel G. Brown, S. E. Page, Rick L. Riolo, William Rand Jul 2002

Modeling The Effects Of Greenbelts At The Urban-Rural Fringe, Daniel G. Brown, S. E. Page, Rick L. Riolo, William Rand

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present and evaluate an agent based model (ABM) of land use change at the rural-urban fringe, comparing its performance to a mathematical model of the same process. Our simplified model was developed in Swarm using agents with heterogeneous preferences and a landscape with heterogeneous properties. The context of this work is a larger project that includes surveys of the preferences of residents and data on historical patterns of development. Our broader goal is to use the model to evaluate the ecological effects of alternative policies and designs. We begin by evaluating the influence of a greenbelt, which is located …

Environment Explorer: Spatial Support System For The Integrated Assessment Of Socio-Economic And Environmental Policies In The Netherlands, Guy Engelen, Inge Uljee, Roger White Jul 2002

Environment Explorer: Spatial Support System For The Integrated Assessment Of Socio-Economic And Environmental Policies In The Netherlands, Guy Engelen, Inge Uljee, Roger White

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environment Explorer is a system developed to support spatial scientists, planners and decision makers at the regional and national level in the Netherlands to analyse a wide range of social, economic and environmental policies and their associated spatial patterns. The core of this system consists of linked dynamic spatial models operating at both the micro- and the macro-geographical scales. At the macro scale, the modeling framework integrates several component sub-models, representing the natural, social, and economic sub-systems. At the micro level, cellular automata based models determine the faith of individual parcels of land based on institutional, physical and environmental factors …

Evaluating Agricultural Systems For Environmental Sustainability Using An Impact Matrix Approach, James C. Ascough Ii, D.L. Hoag, Alejandra Engler-Palma Jul 2002

Evaluating Agricultural Systems For Environmental Sustainability Using An Impact Matrix Approach, James C. Ascough Ii, D.L. Hoag, Alejandra Engler-Palma

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Sustainable agriculture is a complex problem that demands consideration of many interrelated factors, processes, and institutions. Unfortunately, current definitions of sustainability are expansive, and use as a guide for strategic planning or decision making is clouded by ambiguity and a plethora of definitions. Regardless of how sustainability is defined, agricultural producers are interested in developing and evaluating agricultural management systems that are both environmentally sound and economically profitable. There has been a proliferation of decision analysis and economic indicator tools developed to aid producers; however, the tools rarely are used due to excessive complexity or a failure to capture important …

The Boondall Wetlands Reserve, which is located fifteen kilometres north-east of Brisbane, Queensland, are one of Australia's largest remaining habitats for conservation and environmental education. They areinternationally recognized as an important feeding and resting habitat for migratory wading birds from Alaska,China, Japan, Mongolia and Siberia. In 1996, the Boondall Wetlands Visitor Centre was opened in order to: (i)promote environmental awareness within the local and regional communities; (ii) provide community education andinformation about wetlands systems within the local, regional and global context; (iii) offer nature-based recreation, tourism and eco-tourism services; and (iv) demonstrate how wetlands can be used to diversify the tourism industry. This …

Generic Integration In Environmental Information And Decision Support Systems, Ralf Denzer Jul 2002

Generic Integration In Environmental Information And Decision Support Systems, Ralf Denzer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental Information Systems (EIS) and Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS) are major building blocks in environmental management and science today. They are used at all levels of public bodies (community, state, national and international level), in science, in management and as information platforms towards the public. EIS and EDSS are usually said to have certain characteristics, which distinguish them from standard information systems, e.g. information complexity in time and space or uncompleteness or fuzzyness of data items. By the very nature of the complex tasks involved, different methodologies can be an option while developing a new system, for instance modelling, …

An Integrated Assessment Framework For Combining General Systems And Organizational Levels, Roman Lenz Jul 2002

An Integrated Assessment Framework For Combining General Systems And Organizational Levels, Roman Lenz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

It is stated, that ecological theories like the one of organizational levels in living systems, ifcombined with a general systems approach, can be useful also for understanding and manipulating socialsystems and its “hidden socio-cybernetic processes”.Especially in relation to trans-level phenomena affecting different organisational levels, different researchapproaches have to be introduced, showing that descriptive-observational (which also means more holistic)and quantitative-experimental (which also means more reductionistic) approaches are complementary. Therefore, to include all relevant information in delineation and description of systems at any integrationlevel, a ”staircase” or ”scaling” of research steps appears to be the most useful approach. This combinescomparative and quantitative research …

Integrative Environmental Prediction Using Bayesian Networks: A Synthesis Of Models Describing Estuarine Eutrophication, M. E. Borsuk, C.A. Stow, K. H. Reckhow Jul 2002

Integrative Environmental Prediction Using Bayesian Networks: A Synthesis Of Models Describing Estuarine Eutrophication, M. E. Borsuk, C.A. Stow, K. H. Reckhow

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The symptoms of coastal and estuarine eutrophication are the result of a number of interacting processes operating at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Thus, models developed to appropriately represent each of these processes are not easily combined into a single predictive model. We suggest that Bayesian networks provide a possible solution to this problem. The graphical structure explicitly represents cause-and-effect assumptions between system variables that may be obscured under other approaches. These assumptions allow the complex causal chain linking management actions to ecological consequences to be factored into an articulated sequence of conditional relationships. Each of these relationships can then …
